• Early red dye was a very expensive commodity. It came from the female cochineal, a little beetle found in Mexican cacti. When the Spaniards arrived in Mexico in the 16th century, they scraped the beetles off the plants and dried them, then shipped them to Europe. About one million beetles were required to produce a pound of water-soluble extract. • Symbolism associated with the color red is full of opposites. We think of it as the color of love — red roses, Valentine’s Day and Cupid — but it is also the color of danger, hate and the devil. Red can be used as a symbol of guilt, sin and anger, as in the Biblical statement, “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow.” Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1850 novel “The Scarlet Letter” tells the story of a woman in sin forced to sew a red letter “A” onto her clothing. turn the page for more!

SEEING RED (continued): • According to psychological research, people of both genders find those of the opposite sex more attractive if they’re wearing red. Men wearing red appear more powerful to women, as well as higher in status and more likely to succeed. In a University of Rochester study, men were shown identical photos of the same woman. In one, she’s in a blue dress, and in the other, the dress is digitally altered to red. Consistently, men chose the photo of her in the red dress as more attractive. • Other research indicates that red can keep us from doing our best on important tests. During experiments, those who saw a flash of red before the test were impaired in their performance, perhaps because they associated the color with mistakes and failures, as errors have been traditionally marked in red on school papers. Studies also show that red elicits the strongest reaction of all colors and can actually stimulate energy and increase blood pressure, respiration, heartbeat and pulse rate. • Most Americans have probably seen the U.S. flag countless times without knowing what its colors mean. The red stripes symbolize “courage, hardiness and blood shed from the brave men and women who fought for America,” while the white stripes stand for purity and equality. The blue field represents justice, perseverance and vigilance. • Before the days of synthetic dyes, the shade of red known as crimson was produced by using the dried bodies of the kermes insect. This bug is found in the Kermes oak tree, which grows in Mediterranean countries. Crimson is not only the official color of Harvard University’s athletic team, it is also the name of the team itself. Likewise, the University of Alabama’s 19 varsity sports teams adopted the name Crimson Tide in the early 20th century. • A poem entitled “Warning” inspired the formation of The Red Hat society, a social group founded for the purpose of “fun, friendship, freedom, fulfillment and fitness” for women over 50. The lines “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple, with a red hat that doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me” gave the original group of 18 their signature hat idea. Within seven years, there were 40,000 chapters of the group worldwide. The Society has an online store, a magazine and more than 70,000 registered members who believe “silliness is the comedy relief of life.” The first red hat, which had been a birthday gift to one of the charter members, has been donated to the Smithsonian Museum of American History. • An abundant amount of iron oxide on the surface of Mars gives the planet its red color, hence its nickname, the Red Planet. The fourth planet from the sun, Mars is the only planet whose surface can be seen in detail from Earth. Continued on page 7

New canine cancer therapy could be mimicked in humans Part 2 of 2
To test their new therapy, the researchers extracted T-cells – a type of white blood cell needed for immune response – from blood samples taken from each dog. They were then able to recreate and grow many more T-cells outside of the dogs’ bodies as they underwent chemotherapy. This allowed the synthetically generated T-cells to remain unharmed. “The problem with chemotherapy is that it doesn’t just wipe out the tumor, but it also wipes out the immune system, just as it would in humans,” Cooper said. “Chemotherapy kills replicating cells, and one of the facets of your body that replicates often is your immune system.”
CAN’T GET ENOUGH...
If a cancer cell isn’t killed by chemotherapy, it is instead transformed into what is known as an immunogenic cell. Immunogenic cells release antigens that basically act as red flags that help the immune system locate and destroy the remaining cancer cells. But since chemotherapy typically kills most of a person’s T-cells, this process usually doesn’t take place and relapse inevitably occurs. To counteract this problem, Cooper and his team reinserted the healthy T-cells into the dogs after they had received their chemotherapy treatments. Just as the team had expected, the healthy T-cells were able to hunt down the remaining cancer cells and essentially eradicated the cancer. Cooper said that the next step is to move this process from the canine patient to the human patient. “We have several clinical trials based on this ‘add back’ of T-cells in clients,” Cooper said. “Those trials have been reviewed by the FDA, and we have our first patients lined up to go.” Another success of their research, according to Cooper, is the creation of a new type of animal model that could prove more effective than any other type of animal model that has come before. “What’s so compelling is this system that’s been set up has paved the way for canine therapy to be used as a model for human therapy,” Cooper said. “It’s a safer method in that we have to be careful because these are people’s precious pets. We treated the canine patient at the same level as if they were a human patient. We manufactured the cells at the same level of integrity as if they were being used for human application.” Cooper added, “The dog is a man’s best friend, and now a dog with cancer is a human with cancer’s best friend. They’re so alike and so similar, that each helps one another.” The team’s research was published this week in the journal Scientific Reports. Recycled Content Paint??? Is this stuff good??? That’s probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Recycled Content Paint. At Green Sheen that’s the most common question. The answer is a definitive YES! It is not only good it’s often times better than virgin content paints and available at a fraction of the cost. Have you ever painted a room and found that the paint you are using just doesn’t cover without several coats? For the most part, paints are made from the same raw materials. The quality, and quantity, of those raw materials is what sets a good gallon of paint apart from a bad gallon of paint. If you take a gallon of medium quality paint and look at the raw materials that make up that paint, you will often find that it is low in some ingredients and high in others. If you mix several gallons from several different manufacturers together, the end product is often times better quality than the sum of its parts. The ones that are high in ingredient “a” can make up for the ones that are low in ingredient “a” and so on. Because Recycled Content Paints can capitalize on each products higher qualities, they often cover better and touch up better than many top quality virgin content paints available at 3 to 4 times the cost. What can you do? Next time you buy paint, buy Green Sheen. Next time you hire a Painter, demand that he use Green Sheen. The environmental impact is substantial and the cost savings are immediate and measurable. There is no down side! Even on small jobs, the savings add up. Please see our ad on page 12 of Tidbits! Q: I have a gas heater in my home that works very well, but my friend told me I need to maintain it and get it serviced every year. One reason I chose a gas heater was that it didn’t need as much maintenance as the oil-fueled heater in my old home. Do I really need to spend the money to bring in a heater repairman every year? -- Gladys J., Grand Junction, Colo. A: Ideally, you should have a professional check your heating system once a year to make sure everything is working properly. The reason is that, like any machinery, gas furnaces have moving parts, inlet valves and other things that can and will break down eventually. Dirt can build up in the furnace system, and moisture from various sources also can cause problems. A heating professional will be able to check systems like the blower motor and exhaust stack, electrical connections and other areas that are not safe or practical for many homeowners to tackle themselves. There are some maintenance tasks you can do yourself that will help keep the professional’s visit cost-effective. The single most important thing you can do is change the filter every month that the furnace is in operation. This minimizes the amount of dust that enters the furnace itself and keeps it from gunking up the works and reducing heating efficiency (or shutting it down entirely). Keeping the room that the furnace is in free of clutter and dust is another way to maintain the unit. You also can inspect parts of the heating system yourself. Check to make sure the pilot light is burning properly and at the right height. (Your manufacturer’s manual should specify this, but if it doesn’t, most pilot lights burn at about an inch in height, with a bright-blue hue at the top of the flame.) You also might be able to inspect the burners, which when operating also should have clear flames with a bright blue hue. When they are off, visually check the burners for any buildup of soot or grease. Inspect the furnace and all visible ductwork for signs of damage or corrosion twice a year. If you see any issues with the furnace, the burners or the pilot light, or if other problems occur, such as the furnace tripping the circuit breaker, contact a heating professional right away to fix the issue. As a final note, remember to get a written estimate from the heating professional before allowing any maintenance or repair work to take place. HOME TIP: Be safe. Never store combustible materials near a furnace or heater, and make sure the furnace area is well-ventilated. Send your questions or tips to ask@thisisahammer.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

For thousands of years the ruby has been considered the undisputed ruler in the world of gems with many hailing it the “King of Gemstones”! It has beautiful color, exceptional hardness, and a brilliance fit for a king’s crown making it one of the most valuable gemstones on earth, able to bring as much or more than a diamond of comparable size. The most important feature of a ruby is its color with its transparency being of secondary importance. Inclusions, the solid, liquid, or gaseous foreign bodies enclosed within in a ruby, will not prejudice the quality of a ruby unless they diminish its transparency or are located right in the center of its table. Inclusions can even increase the value of a ruby because it is considered a fingerprint of the stone providing evidence of individuality and giving proof that it is of natural origin. The most important ruby deposits in the world are found in the small town of Mong Hsu in the North-East of Myanmar (Southeast Asia). Deposits are also found in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Tanzania with minor deposits in other places around the world including Montana and North Carolina. Beware of many imitations on the market, especially glass imitations and doublets (counterfeit gems made of two pieces, either of smaller gemstones, inferior stones, or glass). If you find the perfect ruby, may I suggest you buy it! It will cost you a small fortune but will bring you great pleasure, and will be an investment well worth keeping.

SEEING RED (continued):
• In China, red is the symbol of good luck and fortune, and a bride traditionally wears red and walks down a red carpet to her groom, who lifts her red veil. When the couple’s children are born, well-wishers gift them with red eggs. During Chinese New Year, homes are decorated with red, red clothing is worn, and unmarried children are given red envelopes filled with “luck money.” Feng shui is an ancient Chinese method of organizing our spaces to achieve balance, harmony and good fortune. Devotees of feng shui recommend painting your home’s front door red to invite prosperity. • Surveys reveal that those who drive red cars have dynamic personalities, are high-energy, speedy and sexy.
• The word red has found its way into many terms and phrases in the English language. When you’re really angry, you’re seeing red. And lots of things can cause you to see red: going through a lot of red tape (having to endure excessive paperwork or requirements to complete a process), or having your checkbook in the red, meaning it is below balance. Taking the red eye? You’re on an overnight flight. There’s not much recourse if you’ve been caught red-handed, because you’re clearly guilty. That might cause you to become red in the face or extremely embarrassed. Has someone given you poor advice? Guidance with no value isn’t worth a red cent. Now and then, we’ve all received the red carpet treatment, when we’ve been made to feel special, and we’ve all had red-letter days, which were important, memorable or joyful. After such days, many folks like to paint the town red, meaning they go out to celebrate!

Why is Brushing With Toothpaste Important? Brushing with toothpaste is important for several reasons. First and foremost, a toothpaste and a correct brushing action work to remove plaque, a sticky, harmful film of bacteria that grows on your teeth that causes cavities, gum disease and eventual tooth loss if not controlled. Second, toothpaste contains fluoride, which makes the entire tooth structure more resistant to decay and promotes r e m i n e -r a l i z a t i o n , which aids in repairing early decay before the damage can even be seen. Third, Dr Burgner special ingredients in toothpaste help to clean and polish the teeth and remove stains over time. Fourth, toothpastes help freshen breath and leave your mouth with a clean feeling.

Is brushing with toothpaste enough to fight cavities and gum disease? No. Although brushing thoroughly after each meal helps, flossing your teeth every day to remove plaque and food particles between teeth and at the gumline is just as important. Studies show that plaque will regrow on teeth that are completely clean within three to four hours of brushing. Please see our ad on page 2 of Tidbits

Put Power of Tax Deferral to Work As an investor, you may sometimes feel frustrated. After all, your portfolio seems to be at the mercy of the financial markets, whose volatility is beyond anyone’s control. Yet you can control the quality of the investCindy Rose ments you own and the diversification of those investments to improve your chances of attaining your long-term financial goals. One way in which to do so is to put as much as you can afford, year after year, into tax-deferred investments. When you contribute to a tax-deferred account, your money has the potential to grow faster than it would if you placed it in a fully taxable investment — that is, an investment on which you paid taxes every year. Over time, this accelerated growth can add up to a big difference in your accumulated savings. For example, if you put $200 each month into a taxable investment that earned a hypothetical 7 percent a year, you’d end up with about $325,000 after 40 years, assuming you were in the 25 percent federal tax bracket. If you put that same $200 per month into a tax-deferred investment that earned the same hypothetical 7 percent a year, you’d accumulate about $515,000 — or nearly $200,000 more than you’d have with the taxable investment.* Of course, you will eventually have to pay taxes on the tax-deferred investment, but by the time you’re retired, you might be in a lower tax bracket. Furthermore, depending on how much you choose to withdraw each year from your tax-deferred account, you can have some control over the amount of taxes you’ll pay. Clearly, tax deferral can be a smart choice, but what sort of tax-deferred vehicles are available? One of your most attractive choices will be your employersponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k). Your earnings have the potential to grow on a tax-deferred basis, and since you typically fund your plan with pre-tax dollars, the more you put in, the lower your annual taxable income. If you’re lucky, your employer will even match some of your contributions. Consequently, it’s almost always a good idea to put in as much as you can afford into your 401(k), up to the contribution limits, and to boost your contributions every time your salary increases. In 2012, you can contribute up to $17,000 to your 401(k), plus an additional $5,500 if you’re 50 or older. Even if you participate in a 401(k) plan, you can probably also contribute to a traditional IRA. Your earnings have the potential to grow tax-deferred and your contributions may be tax deductible, depending on your income level. In 2012, you can put in up to $5,000 to a traditional IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. (If you meet certain income guidelines, you might be eligible to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free earnings, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59-1/2 and you’ve had your account at least five years.) Finally, if you’ve “maxed out” on both your 401(k) and your IRA, you may want to consider a fixed annuity. Your earnings grow tax-deferred, contribution limits are high, and you can structure your annuity to provide you with an income stream you can’t outlive. The more years in which you invest in tax-deferred vehicles, the better. So start putting the power of tax deferral to work soon.

Tidbits of Douglas County STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver
It was English philosopher Francis Bacon who made the following sage observation: “The root of all superstition is that men observe when a thing hits, but not when it misses.” I’m sure you’ve seen photos of those picturesque covered bridges. It seems that they would have provided a welcome haven for people driving buggies caught out in the rain. You may be surprised to learn, though, that the bridges weren’t designed with a roof for the comfort of travelers. Being made of wood in an era before protective sealants, the bridges themselves needed to be protected from the elements. Most frogs lay their eggs in the water; that way, when the tadpoles hatch they are already in their element. The red-eyed tree frog, however, protects its eggs from aquatic predators by attaching its eggs to the underside of leaves that hang out over a body of water. Once the eggs hatch, the tadpoles fall into the water. The next time you travel to the United Kingdom, if you visit the university towns of Cambridge or Oxford, you should keep off the grass. Professors are the only ones allowed to walk on most of the green swards in those towns. In ancient Rome, it was widely believed that holding in gas could cause a person to catch a disease or become poisoned. This was such a concern to public health that Emperor Claudius went so far as to pass a law making it legal to fart at banquets. Have you ever known someone who keeps making the same error over and over again despite being corrected? The next time you run into this person, you’ll know what to call him or her: a mumpsimus. *** Thought for Today: “I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.” -- Albert Einstein (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

On March 10, 1902, in the case of Edison v. American Mutoscope Company, the U.S. Court of Appeals rules that despite his claims, Thomas Edison did not invent the movie camera. The court did, however, admit that Edison invented the sprocket system that moved perforated film through the movie camera. On March 9, 1913, English author Virginia Woolf delivers the manuscript of her first novel, “The Voyage Out,” to her publisher. In 1941, fearful for her own mental state and afraid of the coming world war, she filled her pockets with rocks and drowned herself.
On March 11, 1970, author Erle Stanley Gardner, creator of Perry Mason, dies. The crime-solving attorney Perry Mason appeared in numerous novels and became the star of a top-rated TV show starting in 1957. The show starred Raymond Burr as the titular hero and ran for nine years.

DRIVING Two elderly women were out driving in a large car - both could barely see over the dashboard. As they were cruising along, they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they just went on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself 'I must be losing it. I could have sworn we just went through a red light.' After a few more minutes, they came to another intersection and the light was red. Again, they went right through. The woman in the passenger seat was almost sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it. She was getting nervous. At the next intersection, sure enough, the light was red and they went on through. So she turned to the other woman and said, 'Mildred, did you know that we just ran through three red lights in a row? You could have killed us both!' Mildred turned to her and said, 'Oh, crap, am I driving?'
