In winter most areas of North America are dealing with cold weather. Some people love it; some hate it. In this Tidbits we will look at ice fishing and icebergs, as well as how you can be left “out in the cold,” and that has nothing to do with the weather! • Cold is defined as “having a relatively low temperature; having little or no warmth.” Also, in regards to behavior or personality it can be: “lacking in passion, emotion, enthusiasm” or “not affectionate, cordial, or friendly.” • If you’ve ever been in a situation where you were ignored, neglected or forgotten, you probably felt like you were “left out in the cold.” In this situation, the term is used as an idiom. This idiom originated in the 1800s in reference to someone who was left outdoors without shelter. Hopefully this doesn’t happen often!

ice fishing: not as many anglers trying to get your spot, fewer insects “bugging” you, and you’re not likely to perspire! • Because Canada has long winters, it is no wonder that they have a lot of people who like to ice fish. It is home to the greatest number of participants in the sport. In the year 2000, Canadian anglers spent a combined total of 4,489,296 days ice fishing! • A small fishing village on the south shore of Nova Scotia, West Pubnico, was named for the native Mi’kmaq word, Pombcoup, which means: “a hole that has been cut in the ice for fishing.” • More than 60% of the fish Canadians catch beneath the ice are caught and released. They eat less than one third of their catch. They practice CPR: “catch, photograph, release!” • Minnesota is nicknamed the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” There are actually 11,842 lakes in the state that are 10 acres or larger (4 ha). With so many lakes and cold winters it is no wonder that ice fishing is a popular sport.

• Minnesota is known for its abundance of ice shelters set up on the state’s lakes. If you’ve ever flown into or out of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport you have probably noticed all of the dots on the lakes! Each year it is estimated that around 150,000 ice fishing shelters are set up. The state’s Department of Natural Resources estimates that about 30% of the fish caught in the state are caught when the lakes are frozen.

Ice fishing is a risky sport and the depth of the ice is something to be taken very seriously. In 2009, over 100 people were stranded on the Great Lakes. They became stranded when ice broke away where they were fishing. The Coast Guard rescued all, however, one died in route to the hospital due to hypothermia. This life threatening condition occurs when body temperature falls below 95° F (35° C). • It is imperative when ice fishing to get expert advice. Knowing the area and the ice conditions can make the sport fun; not knowing can lead to disaster. It is recommended that ice thickness for someone fishing alone (not really advisable) be almost four inches (10 cm). For groups, where more are standing on the ice, the ice should be about 7.5 inches (18 cm). When vehicles are taken on the ice, which does happen in some cold climates, the ice should be 11-12 inches (28 cm). • Icebergs are much thicker than the ice that freezes over lakes in the winter. Icebergs are chunks of ice that developed on land, then break off and float in a lake or ocean. The word “iceberg” originates from the Dutch “ijsberg”, which means ice mountain. Continued on page 7

Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc
Question: What is the most common disease found in all animals (humans included)? Answer: Dental Disease. The mouth is a source of yummy food for bacteria and viruses to thrive on. These micro-organisms commonly attack teeth causing decay & tooth reabsorption, gum infection (gingivitis), and disrupt supporting structures & bone (periodontal disease). Plaque and tartar are a mixture of food, saliva and microorganisms that promote dental disease and tooth loss. Regular dry cat food with its very high carbohydrate contributes to dental disease. Brushing, flossing, and regular preventive dental care are the answers to a healthy mouth in humans. Some dogs may allow daily brushing with a pet dental tooth product. This helps to decrease mouth bacteria, decrease tartar buildup and periodontal disease in the process. Cats are the masters at hiding dental disease and most owners don’t know their cat has a problem. Dental exams are part of a yearly health check-up and senior cats commonly need dental exams twice a year. 99% of cats won’t allow brushing. What can be done if you cannot actively brush your cat’s teeth? Adding water disinfecting products to your cat’s water can help decrease the number of bacteria in the mouth, decrease tartar buildup, and decrease periodontal disease. Having your cat eat dental diets may be the biggest help in preventive dental care because dental diets actually scrub the teeth surfaces with fiber. Regular dry cat foods do not clean teeth and they are actually like eating a candy bar because most dry foods are 25-50% carbohydrate. Even with all the preventive measures, routine professional dental care is necessary to help your cat stay healthy. Dental disease is a major source of many internal infections that are spread from the mouth through the bloodstream to the heart, kidneys/bladder, liver, etc.. Thorough dental cleaning requires a short anesthetic because infected gums and teeth are very painful. The cleaning process requires a quiet patient and if extractions and gum surgery are necessary anesthesia is needed.
Make your financial future a priority.
Your cat’s dental health is one of the most important aspects of long term cat care! February is Pet Dental Health Month so if you have been putting off your cat’s dental care this is an ideal time to get those teeth and gums healthy. Cat Specialist has dental specials during the month of February.

Dental Health Month National Pet Dental Health Month is observed every year in February. This time is devoted to help promote the importance of dental and oral health of pets. Periodontal (gum) disease is the most prevalent disease threatening the health of dogs and cats. Regular cleanings control and prevent bad breath. Did you know that bacteria in the gums and surrounding the roots can enter the blood stream and spread elsewhere in the body? Studies have shown that dental disease if untreated can lead to pain, and contribute to systemic disease such as cardiac, kidney and liver disease. Regular cleanings help control bad breath, improve the quality of life, and potentially extend the life of our companion animals.

Scott McQueen Diamond is a stone that excels in brilliance and displays a striking play of prismatic colors. It is the preferred gem in engagement and wedding rings, which are worn every day. It is also the hardest natural material known, where hardness is defined as resistance to scratching. Their hardness makes them quite useful in industry as cutting and grinding tools. Diamonds are used to polish, cut, or wear away any material, including other diamonds. There are diamond-tipped drill bits and saws, and diamond powder is used as an abrasive. Less expensive industrial-grade diamonds, known as bort, are used for such purposes. Diamonds were probably first mind in India over 3,000 years ago. Roughly 49% of diamonds originate from central and southern Africa, although significant sources have been discovered in Canada, India, Russia, Brazil, and Australia. Today experts in the field of gemology grade diamonds and other gemstones based on the characteristics most important to their value as a gem. Four characteristics, known informally as the four Cs, are now commonly used as the basic descriptors of diamonds: these are carat, cut, color, and clarity.

Dinnertime is more than sitting down for a quiet meal with your family. Once the cooking and dining is finished, you still have to pre-rinse, load, wash and sometimes rewash your dishes. Why not make your dishwasher work for you and give yourself a relationship with your family, not your dishwasher? “Most people make dishwashing into a much larger job than it should be,” said Doug Rogers, President of Mr. Appliance® Corp. “The dishwasher should make your life easier, if you use it correctly.”

Breaking Up With Your Dishwasher
Lap of Luxury Limousine Service
Follow these easy tips from Mr. Appliance to keep that sparkle in your dishes:
•
Eliminate a step from your cleaning processno more pre-rinse! Dishwasher detergent is dependent on food particles to do its job. By having no food to attack, it usually moves to glassware, leaving your dishes cloudy with permanent etching damage.
•
To get cleaner dishes, purge your water in the sink before running the dishwasher to make sure it’s hot from the beginning of the wash cycle. The hot water will help break down stuckon food particles and prevent clogs. Make sure your hot water heater is set between 120 and 125 degrees.
•
Choose the correct cycle. Use short cycles and save the normal cycles for your dirtiest dishes. Avoid using the “rinse hold” setting, since it uses three to seven gallons of hot water for each use.
•
It’s better to use granular soap than gel soap – and more is not merrier. Overloading on soap won’t get your dishes any cleaner, and it will cause buildup inside the unit that can damage it over time. Use the right detergent and use it the right way.
•
Once a month run the dishwasher empty with a cup of white vinegar to leave your dishwasher smelling clean and to eliminate food residue buildup, which can cause clogs and strain, or one of the specially designed cleaners available at your local store.
•
If you are still having issues with your dishwasher not cleaning properly get in touch with your local Mr. Appliance and request a free phone consultation from an experienced technician they will help you identify problems and if necessary schedule a service appointment to help you resolve any issues you may have with your dishwasher or other appliances.

IN THE COLD! (continued): • Icebergs are found in all shapes and sizes, from very small pieces to ice islands that can be the size of a small country. The term “iceberg” actually refers to ice larger than 16 feet (5 m) in diameter. Smaller icebergs are known as growlers and bergy bits. Even though they are smaller, they are harder to spot and therefore very dangerous for ships. • Even though most icebergs are found floating in oceans of salt water they are made of pure fresh water. Most of the icebergs on earth are found in the frigid waters surrounding Antarctica and in the northern Atlantic Ocean. Most icebergs originate near the west coast of Greenland. • “Iceberg Alley” is the name given to an area from Baffin Bay, off the west coast of Greenland where many massive icebergs break into the water, to the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador on the east coast of Canada. The Newfoundland and Labrador area is known as the Iceberg Capital of the World. IN THE COLD! (continued): • Approximately 90% of the icebergs that are in the waters near Newfoundland and Labrador originated from the glaciers of western Greenland. They are among the fastest moving icebergs in the world. Even so, by most standards, the four miles (7 km) per year that they tend to move seems slow. It takes an estimated two to three years for the massive icebergs to cover the 1600 nautical miles (2963 km) and reach the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. If icebergs reach the Atlantic Ocean before melting, they melt rather quickly in the warm waters. • After the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, near Newfoundland, the United States, Canada, and eleven other countries formed the International Ice Patrol. The patrol uses airplanes and radar to track icebergs that make their way into the major shipping lanes. The U.S. National Ice Center monitors icebergs larger than 5,400 square feet (500 sq/m) near Antarctica using satellite data. Icebergs are not just studied and watched to protect ships, scientists use them as tools for studying ocean processes and climate. • A way that some inventive Canadians have chosen to use the abundance of icebergs floating in their waters is in creating vodka and other alcoholic spirits. The Iceberg Vodka Corporation, based in St. John’s Newfoundland, produces spirits “made from naturally pure 12,000-year-old icebergs harvested off the coast of Newfoundland.” They use Ontariogrown sweet corn in making their beverages as well. They also make Iceberg Rum and Iceberg Gin. • The largest iceberg ever recorded was found near Baffin Island in 1882. Eight miles long and three miles wide (13 km long/6 km wide), its height above water was 65 feet (20 m).

Making an offer on a home before getting prequalified. Not only does prequalification help you figure out what you can afford and what your payments will be, it’s also a powerful tool to convince the seller that you’re serious about buying their home. If they receive more than one offer on their home, they may choose you even if your offer Is less, just because you are prequalified. 2. Skipping the home inspection. Even if you have bought and sold many houses, it’s still possible to overlook flaws and problems in the property you’re considering. A qualified home inspector will run through a detailed checklist to be sure any major flaws are caught so you’re not caught unaware. 3. Searching for home listings only on your own. Searching the Internet or ads is great-but often the listings aren’t up-to-date, and you may actually be getting excited about a home that’s already under contract or sold. The best way to find a home is through a licensed real estate broker. The seller will be paying their commission so take advantage of their knowledge and expertise. 4. Too strict on your wants and don’t wants. You might have a picture in your mind of the ideal house-butt that isn’t usually the way home-buying works. Don’t pass up a home because it doesn’t exactly match your ideal home vision. Learn to be a little flexible. You might just stumble on a home that you like better than your ideal. And, you can always make changes by small renovations of removing a wall or adding a window etc. If it’s in the right neighborhood at the right price, you might just have found a real gem. 5. Deciding against a home warranty. If the home you buy does not offer an extended home warranty, you can ask the seller for one. That is where a good realtor comes into helping you. Their cost is low and the benefits are great. If this Is not part of your negotiations, you can always buy one yourself for your new home. It covers unexpected problems that you or the seller were unaware of at the time of your purchase.

Look Past "Fog of Uncertainty" When Investing In Europe, the financial
crisis drags on. China’s economic growth has slowed from “wow” to “ho-hum.” Here at home, we’ve seen heated political debates over taxes, spending and deficit reduction. Taken together, these factors have created a “fog of uncertainty” that has left many investors in the dark about their next moves. But is this “fog” really impenetrable — or can you, as an individual investor, see through it to a place of clarity?
Cindy Rose
To do so, you first need to realize that while the events mentioned above are certainly not insignificant, they also aren’t the key determinants of investors’ success. While these types of stories dominate the headlines, they also tend to obscure some of the factors that frequently do play a bigger role in the investment world. And right now, these factors are actually somewhat encouraging. Consider the following: The economy continues to grow. The economy isn’t going “gangbusters,” but it is growing. And thanks to historically low interest rates, consumer debt payments have dropped significantly, leaving people with more money to spend elsewhere. Typically, this higher spending tends to contribute to future economic growth. Corporate earnings remain solid. Many companies have shown strong earnings over the past couple of years — and earnings tend to be a key driver of stock prices. When their earnings are strong, companies may use some of the profits to repurchase shares of their own stock, thereby reducing the number of shares held by the public — which means that even if profits remain the same, the earnings per share should increase. Stocks are still attractively priced. As measured by the price-toearnings ratio (P/E), stocks are still priced relatively well. While no one can predict stock market performance, this may be a good buying opportunity. Of course, all these indicators of today’s investment environment can change over time; at some point, they may well be not so positive. But if you truly want to see through the fog of uncertainty that always develops with unsettling political or economic news, you’ll want to follow these basic, “all-weather” guidelines: Stay diversified. A diversified portfolio can help protect you from the harshest effects of market volatility. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification, can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss.) Rebalance your portfolio. Over time, your investment mix can shift, even without your intent. For example, some of your holdings can appreciate so much in value that they take on a greater percentage of your portfolio than you had intended. That’s why it’s important to periodically rebalance your portfolio so that it fits your investment objectives and risk tolerance. Stay focused on the long term. When confronted with short-term market fluctuations or scary headlines, many people overreact and make ill-advised investment decisions. You can avoid these behaviors by staying focused on the long term. Invest in companies that are charting their own course. When investing for the equity portion of your portfolio, look for companies with the ability to prosper in all economic environments. With patience and perseverance, and by focusing on the key factors outlined above, you can navigate the fog of uncertainty and concentrate on your long-term investment goals. So don’t be afraid to “set sail.” This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S. Master, Academy of General Dentistry Why Does My Tooth Hurt Only When I Chew? Q. Sometimes when I’m chewing, there’s a sharp pain. It goes away quickly, and may not come back for weeks. Nothing else bothers the tooth. When it happens, it’s like hitting my “funny bone”. Should I be concerned? A. Yes! You may have a condition known as “Cracked Tooth Syndrome”, which can be very painful and cause you to avoid chewing on that entire side of your mouth. Q. Why does my tooth hurt when I bite “just right”, but not all the time? A. If the crack extends into the pulp (nerve), or into sensitive dentin, chewing with just the right amount of force, or in just the right spot can cause microscopic movement of the tooth structure at the crack. The pulp becomes irritated, causing a sharp, shooting pain. The pain usually is gone in an instant, until you bite “just right” once again. Q. What caused the crack in my tooth? A. Cracks are small fractures that typically develop as a result of excessive biting pressure. Some people like to chomp on ice, nuts, jaw breakers, pencils, and other hard things. Bruxism (clenching or grinding habit) is a major cause of Cracked Tooth Syndrome. Untreated decay and large fillings weaken the tooth structure and make the tooth more susceptible to fracture. Silver/ mercury (amalgam) fillings can expand and crack the tooth. Trauma or sudden impact to the tooth may crack the tooth – from sports injuries or biting on a hidden hard object in food. Q. Can Cracked Tooth Syndrome get worse? Q. Yes! Cracked Tooth Pain can cause the tooth to be sensitive to cold, and in time, bacteria can spread down the crack and infect the pulp. If the crack splits down into the root, the tooth usually cannot be restored, requiring extraction. Please see our ad on page 1 of Tidbits 720-870-9500 10470 S Progress Way #100 Parker, CO 80134

WHAT CAUSES ARTHRITIS? A drunk man who smelled of beer sat down on a subway next to a priest. The man's tie was stained, his face was plastered with red lipstick, and a half-empty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began reading.

The priest replies, "My Son, it's caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, contempt for your fellow man, sleeping around with prostitutes and lack of a bath." The drunk muttered in response, "Well, I'll be darned”, Then returned to his paper. The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologized. "I'm very sorry.
