• There were probably two different men considered to be St. Valentine, and both were supposedly beheaded on February 14. The more commonly accepted legend identifies St. Valentine as a priest in early Rome around the year 260. The Roman emperor at that time forbade his soldiers to marry because he believed that single men made better soldiers. In the name of love and in defiance of the emperor’s edict, Valentine secretly married soldiers and their ladies and paid the price with his execution. • Tradition places the first Valentine letter around 1415. This was when a Frenchman, the Duke of Orléans, was captured in battle and imprisoned in the Tower of London. From there, he composed rhymed love letters to his wife.

VALENTINE’S DAY (continued): • In the 18th-century, some unmarried women pinned five bay leaves to the center and four corners of their pillows on February 13. According to tradition, that night they would dream of their future husband. Some recited a verse before sleep: “Good Valentine, be kind to me, in dreams let me my true love see.” Perhaps this is where we derive the expression “the man of my dreams”!

• Another old Valentine custom had men write women’s names on bits of paper and place them in a jar. Each man drew a paper, and that woman was the man’s Valentine. He spent the day paying special attention to her and bestowing small gifts, often a pair of gloves. Some of the men pinned the lady’s name to their shirtsleeve and wore it for several days, literally “wearing their hearts on their sleeves.”

• In Victorian days, young women used their fans to convey secret messages to their beaus. Drawing her fan across the cheek meant “I love you,” while twirling it in her right hand gave the warning, “We are being watched.” • Esther A. Howland was the first person to commercially manufacture Valentines, beginning in 1847. Considered the “Mother of the Valentine,” her original creations featured real lace and colorful ribbons. She eventually expanded her business into sales of $100,000 annually.

• In the late 1850s came the “penny dreadfuls,” Valentines with insulting and derogatory verses. They were printed on cheap paper and designed to make the recipient feel dreadful, hence their name. They were also known as “vinegar Valentines,” due to their sour or acidic messages. • According to a French tradition, a young woman lets her admirer know whether his affections are welcome by what she feeds him on Valentine’s Day. If she feeds him an egg dish, the answer is definitely “No,” while something with apple or pear signifies “Yes.”

• Those colorful little candy conversation hearts have been around since 1866, when they were first manufactured by the New England Confectionery Company, or NECCO, as the company is more commonly known. Originally called “motto hearts,” they contained messages such as “Be Good,” “Be True” and “Kiss Me.” NECCO began updating their phrases in recent years, adding “Call Me,” “Fax Me,” “Email Me” and starting in 2011, one in 80 hearts reads “Tweet Me.” NECCO makes eight billion Sweethearts every year, selling about 100,000 pounds of them every day between January 1 and February 14. • If you plan to give your Valentine a bottle of Continued on page 7

Markets Change.

February is Dental Month for Cats & Dogs Companion cats and dogs commonly have dental problems. Processed foods whether canned or dry have increased levels of carbohydrates which encourage the growth of bacteria and the formation of plaque. The next step is the deposition of tartar onto the teeth and under the gums. Bacteria and tartar alter the mouth’s pH and then combine with food to cause gingivitis and periodontal disease. Having regular dental care is the only way to prevent tooth loss, pain and you will have a healthy companion pet. The number one cause of infections in the body is from dental infections releasing bacteria into the bloodstream. Dental care is very important in all species.

When you stop and look back at what’s happened in the markets, it’s easy to realize how quickly things can change. That’s why we should schedule some time to discuss how the market can impact your financial goals. We can also conduct a free portfolio review to help you decide if you should make changes to your investments and whether you’re on track to reach your goals. • Dental diets help cats clean their teeth and dogs also benefit from dental diets. Not all dental diets work, so choose a quality product.

HayCo L.L.C.

• Canned diets usually have lower amounts of carbohydrates so feeding them will help decrease tartar buildup. Dry diets have flour binders to form a dry kibble which is starch. Starch is sugar and tends to form more tartar.

Eating More and Losing Weight? My older cat recently has had a ravenous appetite, begs for food, and he is still losing weight. “Herbie” is very active, plays like a kitten and he has begun to caterwaul at night. What is wrong with “Herbie”? The most common disease problem affecting older cats with these clinical signs is hyperthyroidism. A blood panel with thyroid tests (T4, and fT4ED) is needed for diagnosis. The best news is that this endocrine disease can be CURED! The Cat Specialist doctors have advanced training in nuclear medicine, using 131I to destroy the tumor cells that cause this disease. One treatment cures >96% of affected cats. If your cat is having these problems call our hospital.

Got paint? Seems everybody does – and it’s not just on their walls. You probably have paint cans in your closet, on your basement shelves and in the garage. You’re not alone. In 2003, the EPA estimated that in the U.S. alone, there were nearly one million gallons of leftover paint every day. That’s more than 3.6 billion pounds of leftover paint polluting your environment and seeping into your ground water every year. What can you do? The County holds “round-ups” where they’ll dispose of it. They charge a lot and don’t fix the problem! Even though they charge an up front fee or “donation” at the time you drop it off, it still costs taxpayers $100’$ of thou$and$ and the paint still isn’t gone! The majority goes straight into a landfill here in Colorado! What should you do? Recycle it. Take your leftover latex paint to Green Sheen. They will properly dispose of it through recycling. Plus, for a limited time, they will give you a credit toward the purchase of any new (recycled) paint from their large inventory. What else should you do? Demand recycled paint! Next time you paint, buy recycled paint. Next time you hire a painter, demand that he use recycled paint! Green Sheen hand selects its colors and blends latex paint in designer shades just like the original manufactures. The difference? Theirs saves up to 75% off retail and is environmentally friendly. Even on small jobs, the savings add up!

Q: I just have a patio garden for my city apartment, but this fall I was able to start saving kitchen compost, which I transfer weekly to a large plastic laundry tub on the patio. The large tub is the problem -- water is seeping up around the dirt, and of course the water has an odor. A friend of mine said the pH balance is off. How can I stop this from occurring? -- Jane in New Jersey

apartment managers frown on compost water stains on their patios) you should loosely cover the tub with a tarp so that air gets in but water does not. From here forward, monitor your compost regularly and turn it every week. Also keep an eye on what you’re putting into the kitchen compost. Under no circumstances should you put in meat scraps; this will attract flies and result in maggots. Keep a roughly 50/50 ratio of carbon-rich to nitrogen-rich ingredients. Carbon-rich ingredients include anything “brown,” such as sawdust, dead leaves, paper or straw; nitrogen-rich ingredients include anything “green” such as greens and vegetables. You can also add crumbled eggshells (calcium) and occasionally sprinkle wood ashes from the fireplace into the pile. When the danger of hard frost is past, add a handful of live earthworms to the freshly turned pile. They’ll help aerate and break down the pile into rich compost. If you want to learn more about composting, primalseeds.org has published detailed instructions on building a keeping a healthy compost pile.

The compost in the tub has compacted, so instead of actually composting (breaking down solids) it’s putrefying. Turning the compost will reintroduce air into the pile and help restart the process. Alexandrite

Scott McQueen The Russian Czar Alexander II (1818-1881) has the distinction of having his name on this rare gemstone. The very first crystals were discovered in April 1834 in the emerald mines near the Tokovaya River in the Ural Mountains. The discovery was made on the same day the future Czar of Russia came of age. Because the stone shows both read and green, the principal colors of old Imperial Russia, it became the national stone of Czarist Russia. George Frederick Kunz (1856-1932), master gemologist for Tiffany’s, produced some beautiful series of rings and platinum ensembles at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. This lovely stone was also used in Victorian jewelry produced in England during the Victorian era. The distinctive feature about this stone is its ability to change color. In daylight Alexandrite appears green or bluish-green but when brought into incandescent light it will turn to a soft shade of red, purplish-red or raspberry red. Because of its ability to change colors Alexandrite is one of the most valuable gemstones of all! Scarcity is another reason for its high value. Its formation required specific geological conditions and millions of years to form.

Dental Check Ups Include Oral Cancer Screenings When you go for your regular dental check up, your dentist and hygienist are also screening you for any signs of oral cancer. Every hour of every day, someone dies of oral cancer in the United States. This serious dental disease which pertains to the mouth, lips or throat is often highly curable if diagnosed and treated in the early stages. Visiting your dentist for regular check ups and avoiding tobacco are the key factors in preventing oral cancer.

Gum (Periodontal) Disease Affects Your Overall Dr Burgner Health Gum disease is one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults and has also been linked to heart disease and strokes. If diagnosed in the early stage, gingivitis can be treated and reversed. If treatment is not received, a more serious and advanced stage of gum disease, called Periodontitis, which includes bone loss, may follow. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and getting regular dental check ups and cleanings are the best prevention against gum disease.

Dental Cleanings and Check Ups are Extremely Important Going to the dentist for regular check ups & cleanings is one of the most important factors in maintaining good oral health. Regular check ups can prevent cavities, root canals, gum disease, oral cancer, and other dental conditions. Don’t wait until you have a problem before you see your dentist, help prevent problems before they happen.

Here's How to Insure a Great Valentine's Day Valentine’s Day is almost upon us. To celebrate, you may want to present your loved ones with chocolates, flowers or any number of other traditional gifts. But if your valentine also happens to be your spouse or Cindy Rose your life partner, you also might want to show your love in another way — by making sure you have adequate insurance. Just consider some of the things that life insurance can do for you and your family: Pay off your mortgage — With sufficient life insurance, your family can remain in their home should anything happen to you. Educate your children — College is expensive, and it seems to get more costly every year. If you were to die prematurely, your life insurance proceeds could help pay for your children’s education. Help fund retirement — Term insurance consists of just a death benefit. But “permanent” insurance policies, such as whole life or universal life, a tax-advantaged savings component that could help pay for your retirement and help keep you financially independent — which means you won’t have to worry about being a “burden” to your grown children. Furthermore, proceeds from your life insurance policy could help your surviving spouse retire more comfortably. Help protect your business — If you’re involved in a family-owned business enterprise, you can structure a life insurance policy to help preserve the business or transfer it to the next generation. Pay for estate taxes — If your estate is sizable, it could generate estate taxes. Life insurance proceeds can help your heirs pay these taxes. Clearly, life insurance offers a variety of benefits. But how much do you need? And what type do you need? You might hear that your coverage should be worth around seven or eight times your annual salary. But there’s really no onesize-fits-all formula. In determining how much life insurance you require, you should consider your age, your income, the size of your family, the amount of your mortgage, whether your spouse has a retirement account, your financial goals and other factors. Your financial advisor can help you assess these variables to determine the appropriate level of coverage. One final word on life insurance: Don’t wait too long before purchasing a policy or upgrading your existing one. Your life insurance premium is based, in part, on your age, so the sooner you act, the better. Also, the time to buy life insurance is while you are healthy, because poor health could prevent you from obtaining coverage. As important as it is, life insurance isn’t the only protection you and your loved ones may need. During your working years, you are actually more likely to become temporarily disabled, due to injury or illness, than you are to die. If you weren’t able to work for a while, you could help your family maintain its lifestyle if you had an adequate disability income insurance policy. Your employer might offer you some coverage as a benefit, but it might not be sufficient, either in terms of income or the length of the disability covered. Consequently, you may want to explore an individual disability insurance policy. When you think of romantic Valentine’s Day presents, “insurance” probably doesn’t pop up right away. Yet, by making sure you’ve got all the coverage you need, you may actually be giving your loved ones the greatest gift they’ll ever receive.

Do It Yourself

A Little Help From Your Friends At Stroke Of Genius Painting Part 2 of 2 With all of that said, let’s get started! Let’s assume that your project is to paint a standard furnished bedroom; walls only. We will take you through the steps that a professional painter uses to complete this project.  Remove all artwork and wall hangings from the room.  Remove all small items and furniture.  Position all large furniture (beds, dressers, desks, etc.) to the center of the room.  Remove all switch plates and receptacle covers.  Using drop cloths, cover any existing furniture and exposed flooring.  Cover all switches and fixtures with masking paper and white tape.  Wipe down all case and base trim with a warm, damp painter’s rag.  Using white masking tape, adhere on the ceiling where wall meets ceiling and adhere to trim where trim meets wall.  Apply a small bead of caulk over the tape where ceiling meets wall and where trim meets wall. Glide over it with your finger or a damp cloth to smooth the surface.  Apply primer if walls are stained or the new color is significantly lighter that the existing wall color.  Apply paint 3-4 inches around the parameter of the taped area using a 3 ½” – 4 ½” nylon tapered brush.  Go back to where you first started trimming your paint and remove the tape. Leave tape on the base trim for now.  Using the empty five-gallon bucket, put a few gallons of paint in the bucket with a roller screen and start rolling the walls.  Upon completion, apply a second coat starting from the same point as the first coat.  Remove remaining tape from trim, as well as the masking paper from any switches and fixtures.  Allow project to cure for about 20 minutes.  Return unused paint to its original container and immediately clean brushes and rollers with warm water.  Reinstall switch plates and receptacle covers.  Recover all drop cloths.  Replace artwork and furniture.  Enjoy a job well done! Our goal at Stroke of Genius Painting is to give you helpful tips for making your house a home. If you do find that a project is much larger and more time consuming than you had originally anticipated, please give us a call at 303-956-5022 and we will schedule a time to provide you with a free estimate. Also feel free to call us with your ‘do it yourself’ projects, so that you can pay contractor pricing for all of your painting supplies.
