There are certain records that you may be familiar with. The fastest 100-meter dash, the top speed for a land vehicle and the first breaking of the sound barrier are just three common examples. We may not all know who holds these records, but at least we know these records are out there. Then, of course, there are other records that sit happily outside of the norm. Not only will almost no one know the names of these “famous” record holders, very few people will even be aware that these records exist. Here are a few examples of unusual bests from around the globe.

Three thousand, one hundred piercings were performed in just over six hours, topping the previous best of 1,015 by a couple in the United Kingdom. OFF THE RECORD (continued) • The record for “Most People Inside of a Bubble” is held by Fan and Deni Yang. The two wowed an audience with their outlandish talent for creating bubbles. As part of this year’s BubbleFest in Santa Ana, California, at the city’s Discovery Science Center, they created a soap bubble so large that they were able to fit 118 people inside it, setting the current world record. The BubbleFest, now in its 16th year, celebrates the science and math principles of bubbles. • For Takuo Toda, chairman of the Japan Origami Airplane Association, breaking the “Longest Paper Airplane Flight” record with his time of 27.9 seconds was the culmination of an 11-year scientific effort. In April of 2009, Toda finally reached his goal when he turned a sheet of light sugarcane into a 10-cm craft that stayed aloft for almost 30 seconds. Toda’s model bore a striking resemblance to a NASA space shuttle that he recalled watching three decades before, yet Toda claims that his design actually preceded NASA’s by three or four years. In 1980, he began lobbying for a proposal to launch paper darts from the International Space Station, and in 2008, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency announced a three-year, 90 million yen (over 1.1 million U.S. dollars) study of that very thing. Though it may sound frivolous on its surface, the research could yield valuable information on how future spacecraft may be lighter and more aerodynamic. The next time your co-worker teases you for making paper airplanes, tell him you’re doing it for science! • American Ashrita Furman presently holds 113 places of distinction within the “Guinness Book of World Records.” Nicknamed “Mr. Versatility,” Furman has set more than 340 records since 1979 in 35 countries on each of the world’s continents. In 2010, he sprinted his way into history with the aid of something generally reserved for the water — a pair of black and blue swim fins. He ran a mile (in fins) in 7 minutes, 56 seconds. In addition to breaking the “eight minute land swim fin mile” (a phrase that we are hoping to popularize), Furman’s accomplishment made him the current record holder for holding current records (the aforementioned 113). • Breaking the “World’s Fastest Furniture” record, a lounge chair created by a design group from the United Kingdom was clocked at 87 miles per hour, well over the speed limit on nearly every highway in the world. Couch potatoes with a need for speed need look no further than the “Casual Lofa” (as its creators Cummfy Banana have deemed it), which has an actual vehicle license with the British Ministry of Transportation. Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc A Conundrum, Wrapped in an Enigma, Wrapped in a Conundrum – FIP Noxious, horrible, deadly, frustrating, heartless, nasty, not right . . . are terms used to describe this disease. Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) has a ~100% mortality rate and no treatment has proven effective to date. “The mean survival time after definitive diagnosis was 16 days.” If the affected cat is healthy and has a good immune system he will die much quicker. If the affected cat is sick or immune compromised the disease does not spread quickly and the disease lingers. The disease mimics many of the common and uncommon diseases that cats acquire. The disease is caused by a corona virus. There are 4 common corona viruses that are contagious among cats and they live in the gastrointestinal tract usually causing a self-limiting diarrhea. FIP is a deadly mutation of any of the four common corona viruses. Most cats have the common corona viruses and only a select few cause the virus to change into the killing form. The FIP virus once acquired does not spread readily amongst other cats in a group unless there is over-crowding, excessive stress or a particularly ‘hot’ strain. FIP has a chameleon nature . . . if you think it should act one way it will act another. There are two forms: a wet form that primary surfaces with fluid loss into organs and body cavities due to the destruction of the blood vessel walls and the dry form which can linger for months to years showing a variety of clinical signs – none that are definitive. Veterinary science has yet to develop a simple, reliable test for FIP. A definitive diagnosis antemortem can be extremely challenging. Having a virus that mimics so many other diseases and syndromes makes attempts at diagnosis and treatment very difficult. The diagnostic gold standard is biopsy with histopathology/ Immunhistochemistry. Getting the right diagnostic samples usually requires exploratory surgery or a postmortem examination. New research by Dr. Gary Whittaker at Cornell University may lead to a reliable diagnostic test in the future. The research involves getting the genomes of the 4 non-disease forming corona viruses and comparing them with the mutated FIP virus forms. Locating the differences may help in developing a very sensitive, simple diagnostic test. If a weakness in the virus can be found then new treatments can be developed. The bottomline: FIP sucks and cats die! Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. The name sapphire is derived from the Greek meaning “blue”. The sapphire does have a deep rich blue that can vary all the way to a pale blue. It can also be found in almost every color in the spectrum including brown, orange, yellow, green indigo, violet, or mauve. Blue, however, is the most popular. So, when choosing a suitable sapphire, keep in mind the color you want. Which one you choose may depend on your skin tones, the type of jewelry you are wearing, and the particular fashion statement you wish to make. Also look at the quality of the stone. Examine it from all angles and ensure the color is even throughout the stone. Choose what YOU want, but most people choose blue. Why? Because sapphire blue symbolizes loyalty as in the term “true blue”. The blue can also give expression to love and longing as found in George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”. And do you remember the name of the first computer that succeeded in defeating a world chess champion? It was “Deep Blue”. The price of a sapphire can also make you blue as top quality sapphires are extremely rare. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. SUNSET HARDWOOD FLOORS Custom Refinish & Installation Adam Gale 720-495-2254 Locally Owned & Operated for 15 years THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Is Basement Moisture a Leak, or Humidity? Q: My basement stays fairly dry, but in the spring and during other really rainy periods I can see the concrete walls are wet. Is it condensation or water leaking inside? I haven’t seen any puddles of water on the floor, but it is really humid at these times. -- Bill in upstate New York A: There’s an easy way to test whether the moisture on the basement walls is seepage (water leaking inside) or condensation. Get a few large squares of aluminum foil and tape them to random spots on the basement walls and floor. Use water-resistant tape and completely cover all four edges of the foil so that no air can get underneath it. Leave them there for a couple of days, and then carefully peel away the tape and check both sides of the foil. If the side facing the wall (the inner side) is wet, then seepage is your issue. If the outer side is wet, condensation is the problem. If both sides are wet, seepage is the most likely issue, with condensation possibly a result of the seepage. To reduce seepage, check all of your gutters and downspouts to make sure they aren’t damaged and that rainwater is being directed well away from the foundation. The drain trough under the downspout also should be checked; make sure water isn’t pooling there. Next, check the foundation and basement walls for small cracks, holes or gaps. Repair these with the appropriate type of cement. Finally, paint the interior basement walls with a waterproofing paint specifically formulated for this task, which adheres well to concrete or masonry. To reduce condensation issues, install a dehumidifier in the basement, or install a fan that will pull air outside and help the basement air circulate. Wrap insulation around cold-water pipes so condensation is less likely to occur in the basement space. Outside, try and increase the amount of air and sunlight that reach the basement by trimming back plants and hedges, especially around basement windows. HOME TIP: Debris and leaf dams in your gutters can damage them and lead to other problems around your home’s exterior. Clean your roof gutters twice a year. Send your questions or tips to ask@thisisahammer.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Is actually pretty grimm. In 2005, Denvers Mayor John Hickenlooper launched the city’s sustainable development initiative, Greenprint Denver to identify opportunities for the city to lead by example, and to partner with community individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations and cultural institutions to help affect positive change in the community. What does it all mean? It means the City of Denver realizes there is a problem in Colorado that needs to be corrected. In 2004, Coloradoans disposed of a whopping 9 pounds of waste per person, per day, one of the highest volumes in the nation. In 2009, the Douglas County Household Chemical Roundup Program reported that it collected 168,937 pounds of waste. 132,875 pounds was reported to be “paint products”. That’s over 3.6 times the total cumulative amount of all other “household materials” collected. What can you do? Next time you have latex paint to dispose of, recycle it with a Colorado based recycler. GreenSheen will not only recycle the paint directly but also the containers it comes in with local companies thereby keeping all of the economic and environmental benefits local to Colorado. They are like 3 recycling Companies rolled into one nice little package. What else can you do? Next time you buy paint, buy GreenSheen. It is made locally from recycled materials that are gathered locally. It is high quality, professional grade paint that is available to you for as low as $8 per gallon. It’s a win…..win…..win for your pocketbook and the environment! Please see our ad on page 12 of Tidbits! GreenSheen 303-514-3955

In addition to its performance-driving chair, the company has also built a bed on wheels called the “Street Sleeper” that can go 69 miles per hour and a zooming tub (the “Bog Standard”) that can go 71. They even offer a motorized office suite for the more business-minded racing aficionado. • For even the least fit or scientifically inclined among us, there is one record potentially within our reach, “Most T-Shirts Worn At Once.” On May 22, 2010, Croatia’s Krunoslav Budiseli bested a former Swedish record holder by wearing 245 T-shirts at the same time. The feat took a little less than two hours to complete and ended with the Croatian wearing about 150 pounds (68 kg) worth of T-shirts. Budiseli said things started to become difficult around the 120th shirt, yet he somehow summoned the strength and force of will to don 125 more. Will May 22 live on forever in the annals of Croatian T-shirt achievement? Only time will tell. • In the annals of “records least likely to exist,” the “Most Nights Spent In A Room Full of Scorpions” record would’ve been pretty close to the top, yet Kanchana Ketkaew of Thailand actually managed it. Ketkaew spent 33 days in the company of 5,320 live scorpions. The room, which was made of glass, was not much larger than a normal office room — about 10 feet wide by 12 feet long. Despite sharing cramped quarters with a swarm of unfriendly crawling roommates, Ketkaew emerged relatively unscathed, getting stung only about 13 times.

Unroll dough from tube. Flatten it out a little with your hands or a rolling pin. It should be a large rectangle. Spread pizza sauce on top. Sprinkle with half the cheese, then top with spinach leaves and Canadian bacon slices. Roll up, starting with the short end. Slice into 8 round pinwheel pieces, then lay pieces flat on a pizza pan or greased pie tin. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and bake 22-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Get creative: Since children are more likely to eat food that they helped prepare, use this recipe to try some new veggies or flavors. Try Alfredo sauce with grilled chicken and broccoli florets, or come up with your own unique combination. Get rid of clutter. You probably don’t have to look too far around your home to find things that are broken or simply Cindy Rose no longer useful to you. If you poke around your portfolio, you might make similar discoveries: an investment that has chronically underperformed, duplicates another investment or met your needs in the past but is less relevant to your current situation and goals. Once you identify these types of investments, you may decide to sell them and use the proceeds to take advantage of opportunities that may prove more valuable to you. Consolidate. Over the years, you may have accumulated multiple versions of common household items — brooms, mops, hammers — which pop up mysteriously in various parts of your home. You might find it more efficient, and even less expensive, if you consolidated all these things in one centralized location. As an investor, you also might find that consolidation can offer you some benefits. Do you have one Individual Retirement Account (IRA) with one financial services provider and a second IRA with another? Do you have a couple of old 401(k) accounts with former employers? And have you scattered investments here, there and everywhere? By consolidating all these accounts in one place, you can cut down on paperwork, reduce fees and, most importantly, unite your investment dollars so that it’s easier for you to see what you have and then follow a single, coherent investment strategy. Prepare for turbulent weather. As you know, springtime can bring heavy rains, hail, strong winds and other threats to your home. As part of your overall spring cleaning, you may want to check the condition of your roof, clear branches away from your house, clean your gutters and downspouts, and take other steps to protect your property from the ravages of Mother Nature. And just as you need to safeguard your home, you’ll want to protect the lifestyles of those who live in that home — namely, your family. You can help accomplish this by reviewing your life and disability insurance to make sure it’s still sufficient for your needs. Get professional help. You may find that you can’t do all your spring cleaning by yourself. For example, if your carpets and rugs are heavily soiled, you may need to call in a professional cleaner. Or if your tree branches have grown out of control, you might need to bring in a tree trimmer. Similarly, when you decide to “tidy up” your portfolio, you’ll need some assistance from a financial professional — someone who can study your current mix of investments and recommend changes, as needed, to help ensure your holdings are suitable for your risk tolerance, time horizon and short- and long-term goals. Spring cleaning can reinvigorate your home and your overall outlook. And by tidying up your investment portfolio, you can help gain some of that same optimism — for your future. Q: Does Gum Disease Cause Heart Attacks? A: Yes…….and strokes, low birth weight babies. Recent research proves a definite link between gum disease, heart disease, stroke, and pre-term low birth weight babies. Good oral health is more than just having an attractive smile; it can have a definite relationship to your overall health, lifestyle, and longevity. The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) reports that more than 90 percent of all systemic diseases can be manifest in abnormal oral health. Q: How do I know if I have Gum Disease? A: Warning signs of gum disease include: • Stinky breath • Puffy, red, sore gums that may bleed when brushing or flossing • Loose teeth • Changes in the way the bite fits or feels • Receding gums exposing the root surfaces Q: Is gum disease contagious? A: Yes! The bad bugs (“bacteria”) that cause gum disease are readily passed from one person to another. (Be sure to “think before you kiss”!)

It was noted American science fiction author Philip K. Dick who made the following sage observation: “Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.”

You might be surprised to learn that the given name of iconic Apache leader Geronimo, Goyathlay, translates as “one who yawns.” And the very name Apache isn’t what the tribe originally called itself; it’s word from the Zuni Indian language, and it means “enemy.” In a scant 100 years, from 1500 to 1600, the population of the city of London quadrupled in size. Singer and songwriter Roger Miller, best known for his hit song “King of the Road,” had a passion for music early, even though his family was poor. When he was in grade school, he spent his weekends picking cotton so he could save up enough money to buy a guitar. After eighth grade he quit school and went to work herding cattle and riding in rodeos. Interestingly, the word “pudding” came into the English language from the German word “puddek,” which means “sausage.” *** Thought for the Day: “We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.” -- John F. Kennedy (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Gum disease (Periodontal Disease) is an infection in the gums and bone supporting the teeth, caused by specific bacteria. These bacteria organize into a sticky, creamy, stinky substance (paque) that sticks tenaciously around the teeth and gums. Gum disease can advance for years without detection or pain. Damage to the supporting bone is irreversible. The best cure is prevention before it happens or stopping gum disease in its tracks before major damage and tooth loss occur, and before you pass it to your “significant other”. See your dentist and dental hygienist and be sure to ask those important questions above – or call our office for a FREE Periodontal checkup and exam. If you any dental questions, please give Dr. Burgner a call at 720-870-9500, or consult the website: www. ParkerLumineers.com Dr Burgner has served on the Fellowship Examination Committee of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), and received national recognition awards from that 30,000 member organizaation. DON’T MESS WITH SENIORS

Being Seniors, after almost eleven hours on the road, they were too tired to continue, and decided to take a room. But, they only planned to sleep for four hours and then get back on the road. When they checked out four hours later, the desk clerk handed them a bill for $350.00.

"But we didn't go to any of those shows," the husband said. "Well, we have them, and you could have," the Manager replied. No matter what amenity the Manager mentioned, the husband replied, But we didn't use it!" The Manager is unmoved, and eventually the husband gave up and agreed to pay. As he didn't have the check book, he asked his wife to write the check. She did and gave it to the Manager. The Manager is surprised when he looks at the check. "But ma'am, this is only made out for $50.00." ''That's correct. I charged you $300.00 for sleeping with me," she replied. "But I didn't!" exclaims the Manager.. "Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have." Moral: Don't mess with senior citizens. They didn't get there by being stupid!

The man explodes and demands to know why the charge is so high. He told the clerk although it's a nice hotel; the rooms certainly aren't worth $350.00 for four hours. Then the clerk tells him that $350.00 is the 'standard rate'. He insisted on speaking to the Manager. The Manager appears, listens to him, and then explains that the hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center that were available for them to use. "But we didn't use them," the husband said. ''Well, they are here, and you could have," explained the Manager. The Manager went on to explain that the couple could also have taken in one of the shows for which the hotel is famous. "We have the best entertainers from New York , Hollywood , and Las Vegas perform here", the Manager says.

"A woman went to a pet shop & immediately spotted a large, beautiful parrot.. There was a sign on the cage that said $50.00. "Why so little," she asked the pet store owner. The owner looked at her and said, "Look, I should tell you first that this bird used to live in a Brothel and sometimes it says some pretty vulgar stuff." The woman thought about this, but decided she had to have the bird any way. She took it home and hung the bird's cage up in her living room and waited for it to say something.. The bird looked around the room, then at her, and said, "New house, new madam." The woman was a bit shocked at the implication, but then thought "that's really not so bad." When her 2 teenage daughters returned from school the bird saw and said, "New house, new madam, new girls." The girls and the woman were a bit offended but then began to laugh about the situation considering how and where the parrot had been raised. Moments later, the woman's husband Keith came home from work. The bird looked at him and said, "Hello, Keith!"
