• An idiom is “a set expression of two or more words that means something other than the literal meanings of its individual words.” The idioms we’ll explore in this Tidbits are those that deal with animals.

• While little children may be cute as a bug’s ear (the smaller they come, the cuter they are), some are bullheaded (stubborn) and make a beeline (go toward) to trouble. After all, when the cat’s away, the mice will play (people misbehaving without supervision).

• A bullheaded (obstinate) person may try to butt heads (to argue fiercely) with a sheepish (embarrassed) friend only to find that she will pull the wool over his eyes ( fool him).

• It is easy to get fleeced (swindled) if you don’t pay attention to what is happening to you and just ignore obvious problems. If you make yourself a sitting duck (easy target) you may end up in a harebrained scheme (foolish plan).

• It is much better to have all your ducks in a row (be organized), than to go down a rabbit hole (enter a fantasy world) when you need to make decisions.

• Hold on if you think we are barking up the wrong tree (have the wrong idea), fantasy worlds can be fun and engaging. Just remember that it’s a dog-eat-dog world (there is a lot of competition in life) out there and you need to be careful not to be constantly chasing your own tail (working hard but not getting anything done)!

• If organizing gives you a burr under your saddle (causes you to be irritated), remember that the early bird gets the worm (start early so that you have the best chance for success).

• Seeing an opportunity to improve your life or your situation, sometimes requires walking on eggshells (being careful not to offend others) or a somewhat opposite situation; taking the bull by the horns (tackling the problem).

Edge Your Beds. Check the edges of your beds – that all important separation between your grass and your landscape beds. A fresh edge adds distinction and character to your landscape. It also keeps the grass clippings out of your beds.

Set Your Mower Height. Set the height of your lawn mower to 3â€?. Longer grass will grow thicker, healthier and result in a more established root system. Note: before you ďŹ re up the mower, make sure to sharpen the blades, replace spark plugs and check the oil and air ďŹ lters.

Check Hoses and Sprinkler Heads. To conserve the most water possible, make sure you don’t have any leaky hoses or rotors, and that they’re spraying only where you want them to. No sense giving the driveway a bath.

Create a Compost Pile. Pick a spot away from your house and pile your grass clippings, dead leaves and even kitchen scraps. Give it a turn or two every weekend and you’ll soon have a nutrient-rich mixture to spread on your garden.

Get Organized. You’ll save yourself tons of time if your garage or garden shed is in proper order. Take everything out, sweep the oor and put things back in a logical and orderly way. Return tools back to their proper places. Anything you don’t need, give to charity or sell.

• On April 7, 1776, Navy Capt. John Barry, commander of the American warship Lexington, makes the first American naval capture of a British vessel when he takes command of the British warship HMS Edward off the coast of Virginia.

• On April 12, 1914, the Mark Strand Theater opens to the public in New York City. The Strand was the first of the “dream palaces.” It seated 3,000 people and boasted a second-floor balcony.

• On April 9, 1939, Easter Sunday, more than 75,000 people come to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., to hear black contralto Marian Anderson give a free concert. Anderson had been scheduled to sing at Washington’s Constitution Hall, but the Daughters of the American Revolution denied her the right to perform because of her race.

• On April 11, 1951, President Harry Truman relieves Gen. Douglas MacArthur of command of the U.S. forces in Korea. The firing set off an uproar among the American public, but Truman remained committed to keeping the conflict in Korea limited. Eventually the American people understood that MacArthur’s policies might have led to a massively expanded war in Asia.

• On April 10, 1963, the USS Thresher, an atomic submarine, sinks in the Atlantic Ocean, killing the entire crew when it unexpectedly plunged to the sea floor 300 miles off the coast of New England. A subsequent investigation revealed that a leak in a silver-brazed joint in the engine room had caused a short circuit.

• On April 13, 1970, disaster strikes 200,000 miles from Earth when oxygen tank No. 2 blows up on Apollo 13, the third manned lunar landing mission. The crippled spacecraft continued to the moon, circled it, and began a long journey back to Earth, parachuting safely into the Pacific Ocean on April 17.
