This issue of Tidbits is not just about nosey neighbors or co-workers (but they will be mentioned…shhh! Don’t tell them!), but also about noses that are superior in sensing aromas. • There have been a number of television shows and movies that have featured nosey neighbors. Whether putting a glass against the wall to listen to voices in the next room or peeping through a keyhole, there are times when curiosity gets the best of a person and they just want to know what is going on! Examples of these “snoopy” tricks can be found in videos of I Love Lucy, Friends, Bewitched. • One of the main characters of the show, Bewitched, was Gladys Kravitz. She was constantly spying on her interesting neighbor, Samantha, who happened to be a witch. When the show was on television in the 1960s and had quite a following, many would refer to their nosey neighbors as having the “Gladys Kravitz syndrome!”

• In case you are wondering, nosey can be spelled with or without the “e,” according to thefreedictionary.com. It is an adjective meaning: “offensively curious or inquisitive.” While people can be nosey in the inquisitive way, many animals have superior smelling abilities. turn the page for more!

NOSEY (continued): • One such beast with an extraordinary sense of smell is the bear. A bear’s brain is only about a third of the size of a human brain but his nose is approximately five times larger; the nasal mucous membrane in a bear’s head is 100 times larger than the membrane in a human! Their nostrils have folds that house thousands of smell receptors making their sense of smell better than bloodhounds and possibly the best of any land animal. Bears use their sense of smell to find mates, identify their cubs, find food, and detect and avoid dangerous situations involving other bears or humans. • In California, a black bear was seen traveling upwind in a straight line for three miles to find a dead deer. Some studies have shown that a bear’s sense of smell is actually seven times better than a bloodhound’s.

• Speaking of bloodhounds; they are possibly the best detectives known! Their sense of smell is so good that they beat the best man-made odor detecting machines. Even after several days of a person’s trail going through streets, shops and more, a bloodhound can still follow the scent. Some dogs have been trained to detect types of cancer with greater accuracy than very expensive screening equipment.

• Detecting scents underwater is what a shark’s brain does well. Approximately two-thirds of a shark’s brain is focused on smell. They can detect a tiny drop of blood from more than a mile (1.6 km) away. They can even detect nervousness in other fish, which helps them find and destroy prey very easily.

• In many instances humans have better recall of smells than visual recall. One study found a 65% accuracy for smell after a year, while visual recall of photos was below 50% after only three months. • Rats can be trained, like dogs, to use their extraordinary sense of smell to help humans in lifesaving ways, one of which is to detect land mines. Rats can smell in stereo, with each of their nostrils working independently! • The advantage to using rats instead of dogs for this type of defense work is not just because of dogs’ reputation as “man’s best friend” and the close relationships handlers form with dogs but also because they are cheaper to keep and train. • Giant African pouched rats are used for mine detection by APOPO, an acronym from the Dutch language which means Anti=Persoonsmijnen Ontmijnende Product Ontwikkeling. In case you don’t speak Dutch, it is translated Anti-Personnel Landmines Detection Product Development. Easter/Spring Plants That Are Highly Toxic To Cats!

The coming of Spring and the first flowers can bring joy and beauty of a new growing season. Easter starts the growing season with many beautiful but poisonous plants. The Tiger Lily and Easter Lily are very toxic. Many domestic felines have lost their natural sense of which plants are toxic and which are not. The most likely explanations are the loss of their natural diet, living in human housing and being exposed many unnatural surroundings and products (plastics, lawns, gardens, houses, cars, chemicals, drugs, electricity, sounds, smells, lights, TV, etc., etc.). Highly Toxic Plants to Cats: • Kalanchoe (Devil’s backbone, Mexican hat plant) – all parts of the plant/flowers • Oleander – all parts especially dry/dead leaves • Foxglove – all parts especially flowers, fruit and young leaves • Lily of the Valley – all parts, especially the roots • Taxus genus (Yews) – all parts are toxic • Prunus genus – primarily the seeds of Apples, Apricots, Cherries, Peaches, Plums • Solanaceae (Nightshade) – all parts, especially berries and unripe fruit • Ranunculaceae (Buttercup) – fresh leaves and stems • Araceae (Peace Lily, Ivy, Philodendron, Dieffenbachia, Dumbcane) – all parts, stems • Lilies (all types – Easter Lilies, Tiger Lilies, etc.) – all parts, even pollen • Castor Bean – all parts, especially the beans • Cycad Palms – all parts, especially the seeds • Autumn Crocuses – all parts, especially flowers, corm, and seeds • Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow – all parts are toxic • Rhododendron – all parts are toxic Many house or garden plants have the potential to be toxic year round and some have seasonal toxicities. It is best not to have plants around domestic cats unless you have done your research to see if those plants are safe. If you are unsure if your plants are safe – research on-line, talk with your garden center or contact the National Animal Poison Control Center – a 24 hour emergency service with phones answered by licensed veterinarians and toxicologists – there is a $60 consultation fee for each call – 1-888-426-4435. There are hundreds of plants that are mildly toxic, moderately toxic and very toxic to cats, dogs and humans so beware of the beauty around us and learn which plants can harm.

For thousands of years the ruby has been considered the undisputed ruler in the world of gems with many hailing it the “King of Gemstones”! It has beautiful color, exceptional hardness, and a brilliance fit for a king’s crown making it one of the most valuable gemstones on earth, able to bring as much or more than a diamond of comparable size. The most important feature of a ruby is its color with its transparency being of secondary importance. Inclusions, the solid, liquid, or gaseous foreign bodies enclosed within in a ruby, will not prejudice the quality of a ruby unless they diminish its transparency or are located right in the center of its table. Inclusions can even increase the value of a ruby because it is considered a fingerprint of the stone providing evidence of individuality and giving proof that it is of natural origin. The most important ruby deposits in the world are found in the small town of Mong Hsu in the North-East of Myanmar (Southeast Asia). Deposits are also found in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Tanzania with minor deposits in other places around the world including Montana and North Carolina. Beware of many imitations on the market, especially glass imitations and doublets (counterfeit gems made of two pieces, either of smaller gemstones, inferior stones, or glass). If you find the perfect ruby, may I suggest you buy it! It will cost you a small fortune but will bring you great pleasure, and will be an investment well worth keeping.

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta

Pruning Tips Q: I haven’t pruned many of my hedges and trees in several years, and some of them have grown wild and ragged-looking. If they’re past the blooming stage, is it safe to trim them? Also, any tips to make this task easier? -- Carol in Oklahoma A: Trying to tackle all of the shrubbery and trees in your yard can be daunting, even when it hasn’t been several years since their last pruning. The best thing to do is take an initial tour of your yard with notebook in hand. Mentally split the yard into several sections, and then note what needs to be done in each: trimming, pruning or even removal of foliage. Next, tackle each section one at a time. Depending on your schedule, you may need to do one section each day. A particularly foliage-heavy section may take an entire weekend. You might need help from friends or relatives to take care of large or excessively high hedges, meaning you’ll need to plan a time for them to come over. And if a tree needs complex trimming -- for example, its branches are encroaching on the roof or on power lines -- you’ll need to arrange for a professional tree trimmer to inspect it, provide an estimate and do the work. Pruning on your own takes a little practice, but don’t worry too much about mistakes, as they will eventually grow out. Plants that have already bloomed can be pruned without a problem, and plants or trees that are still blooming are, by this time of year, safe to trim. As you’ll likely be piling up a lot of branches and limbs, check with your local government about proper disposal of yard waste. Most have programs in place, such as scheduled pickup dates during the growing season, and guidelines for containers or bags that the trimmed branches should be placed in. If you hire a tree trimmer, be sure to ask how branches will be disposed of, and if that cost is included in the estimate. HOME TIP: Keep hedge and tree-trimming equipment sharp, clean and lightly oiled so that they cut branches cleanly and efficiently.

NOSEY (continued): poses.” It is a company registered in Belgium with headquarters in Tanzania. Their rats are called HeroRATs. • Three countries that have been helped with mine detection rats are Tanzania, Mozambique and Thailand. When the land is cleared of landmines, not only does it make an area safer for those living nearby but it also makes the land accessible for use and many times opens up water sources nearby as well. • HeroRATs are also trained for tubercolsis detection. Read about these super smellers at: http://apopo.org/home.php?lang=en. • On to a prettier animal – moths can sniff out a future mate in flight 6-7 miles (9-11 km) away. The feathery antennae allow this fine searching ability. • Snakes use their tongues in a flicking action not just to scare humans and animals, but to smell with. Snakes do have nostrils and nasal cavities but don’t use them to smell. • Most birds have keen eyesight but their sense of smell is lacking. The albatross is an exception. This large bird hovers above the water, usually an ocean, looking for its next meal. An albatross has an extra-large nose on top of its beak. The oversized honker helps an albatross detect food even in the dark. • People with oversized noses tend to have many critics. Some celebrities have actually become famous in part because of their noses. Many refer to their noses as a proboscis, a facetious use of the word that is defined as a trunk of an elephant or a long flexible snout, usually referring to animals. • Jimmy Durante was a very popular entertainer known for his jokes about his nose and a silly song he called Inka Dinka Do he recorded in 1934. A great piano player, jazz musician, band leader and one of the early stars of television, his nickname was Schnozzola, a name he coined himself for his large nose.

CAN’T GET ENOUGH...

• Bing Crosby called his friend and fellow comedian, Bob Hope, “Old Ski Nose.” Hope’s nose wasn’t especially big but was long and thin and had a bit of a curve up. Many caricatures were drawn of the comic’s nose. Hope joked about his nose saying that “my nose came on screen 10 minutes before the rest of my face.” • Another large-nosed entertainer was Danny Thomas. He was the star of Make Room for Daddy, a popular television comedy from 195364. He left an honorable legacy by founding the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee in 1962.

8 Ask The Dentist Ask the Dentist

by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S. Q. What can I do about my sensitive teeth? A.

Tooth hypersensitivity may respond to a desensitizing

toothpaste. Last week I mentioned avoiding Tarter Control Toothpaste, which can cause sensitivity with prolonged use. In addition, avoid frequent use of soft drinks, which typically have high sugar and high acid contents. Citrus juices and many sports drinks are highly acidic. What does a desensitizing toothpaste do? A desensitizing agent in the tooth-paste works to close open microscopic pores on the surface of the tooth and block the fluid movement within the small tubes in the dentin that triggers pain inside the tooth.

Be patient.

It may take a month or so for significant improvement. Don’t “over do it”, since long-term use of a desensitizing toothpaste can actually aggravate sensitivty. Q. Does the type toothbrush I use matter? A. Yes! Using a hard brush or brushing too hard with any kind of brush can wear into the tooth’s surface and trigger sensitivity. How do I know if I’m brushing too hard? Check your toothbrush. If the bristles are pointing every which way, you’re either brushing too hard, or you’ve been using it too long – or both. It’s time for a new one. Change your brush at least every three months. When is it time to see a dentist? If a tooth is sensitive for more than two or three days and reacts to hot and cold temperatures, it’s time to see the dentist.

YOUR WEEKLY

KICK IN THE PANTS! By Ron Ross

“Stop whining - most of your life is up to you.” Ron Ross Friends: This is the first of seven consecutive columns on relationships.

to his porch and introduced myself. He was quite happy to have found a new friend in this big town he had just moved to.

Seven Reasons We MIGHT Open The Doors of Our Lives to Others. Here’s an experiment in human relations you can do: Walk down the street and as you pass people, smile at them and attempt to engage their eyes without a greeting. Very few people will actually look at you and acknowledge that you are on the same planet let alone within an arm’s length of each other.

As children we actually ache for friendship, so are quite good at welcoming strangers into our lives. We want playmates. We ask our mother if we can go over to our friend’s house to play or if they can come and spend the night with us. As we grow, we let others into our lives to play when we join a club, play team sports, or develop personal friendships based on hobbies or other leisure pursuits.

We tend to lock the doors of our lives for the same reason we lock the doors to our homes, to keep us safe from unwanted, unknown intruders. Even though most of us don’t look like axe murderers, the strangers we pass by everyday seldom acknowledge us nor do we acknowledge them. We feel safer when we move at a quick pace with our arms crossed about our chest and our eyes cast downward. It’s the natural thing to do, I suppose, to protect our selves. And who’s to criticize, what with all the nightly news reports of kidnappings, murders, and bizarre incidents. I’m not talking about the acute fear of strangers referred to as Xenophobia; I’m talking about the normal, everyday experience of protecting ourselves from those we don’t know or don’t want to know. Socially healthy people willingly open a door or two of their hearts from time to time. I’ve identified seven reasons socially healthy people open their private heart doors to others. They are: to play, to abate loneliness, to calm fears, to work, to solve problems, to grow, and to love. I will discuss one area each week for the next six weeks. Here’s the first… The First Time We Open Our Lives to Others is To Play. It was a hot day in August, 1956 in Council Bluffs, Iowa when I saw a moving truck at the big white house across our back yard and on the other side of the street. After the truck left I noticed a kid about my age sitting on the front porch steps. He looked terribly lonely there all by himself. I could almost feel him calling me to invite him over. Bravely, I walked through the vacant lot and up

And it’s good for us. When we play we learn about life. We learn to share, to win, to lose, to fight, to make peace, and to compromise. We discover that people are different and that some are nice and some are not. We discover appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Through play and friendship we discern the unwritten laws of the relational universe. We find outlets for our aggression, we develop problem solving skills, we find relief from stress, we learn about our own likes and dislikes. As we age, we become more cautious. As we “grew up” and as we played with others we learned that some people ridicule us, exclude us, ignore us, gossip about us, or find our tender spot and go out of their way to hurt us. So when outside of our comfort zone of trusted friends and loved ones, we fold our arms across our chest, cast our eyes downward, and pick up our pace. Only if we could, like innocent children, interact and enjoy each other’s company without suspicion about intentions, uncertainty about the prudence of the connection, or fear of being hurt. Wouldn’t it be grand if we could regain our innocent, childlike interest in others? Our lives would be better and the world would be a better place to live, don’t you think? On May 19, 1715, the colony of New York passes a law making it illegal to “gather, rake, take up, or bring to the market, any oysters whatsoever” during May, June, July and August. This regulation was only one of many that were passed in the early days of America to help preserve certain species. On May 17, 1792, a group of 24 traders gather under a buttonwood tree at 68 Wall Street in lower Manhattan to work out the regulations of the speculative market. The result was the Buttonwood Agreement, a two-sentence contract that gave birth to the New York Stock Exchange. On May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss secures the necessary patents for canvas pants with copper rivets to reinforce the stress points. Unable to sell a large supply of canvas in the California mining camps, Strauss had hit on the idea of using the durable material to make work pants for miners. On May 18, 1917, six weeks after the United states formally enters the First World War, the U.S. Congress passes the Selective Service Act, giving the president the power to draft soldiers. By the end of World War I in November 1918, some 24 million men had registered. On May 16, 1929, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hands out its first awards. The Academy officially began using the nickname Oscar for its awards in 1939. The name possibly arose when Academy executive director Margaret Herrick remarked that the statuette looked like her Uncle Oscar. On May 14, 1944, “Star Wars” filmmaker George Lucas was born in Modesto, Calif. Lucas was the first director to hold out for ancillary rights, and in the 20 years following the release of “Star Wars,” he sold more than $3 billion in moviebased merchandise. On May 15, 1982, “Ebony and Ivory,” a duet by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, takes the top spot in the Billboard Hot 100. This continued the pop music trend of pairing successful duos, such as Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond, and Diana Ross and Lionel Richie.

CAR KEYS

720-837-6687

Several days ago as I left a meeting at a hotel; I desperately gave myself a personal TSA pat down. I was looking for my keys. They were not in my pockets. A quick search in the meeting room revealed nothing. Suddenly I realized I must have left them in the car. Frantically, I headed for the parking lot.

SELLING DOUGLAS & ELBERT COUNTIES

My husband has scolded me many times for leaving the keys in the ignition. My theory is the ignition is the best place not to lose them. His theory is that the car will be stolen. As I burst through the door, I came to a terrifying conclusion. His theory was right. The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen.

The Bible Lesson A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car. His father said he'd make a deal with his son: 'You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car.' The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd settle for the offer, and they agreed on it.
