Many people suffer from the blues during the winter months because of a lack of sunshine, but spring will bring us all warmth and sunny days soon! This Tidbits explores the gigantic star that our planet revolves around. • The sun is a huge star that is the center of our solar system. Earth is tiny compared to the sun. Our entire planet could fit inside the sun 109 times if it was a hollow ball! Of course, it’s not hollow; it is filled with hot gasses. How hot? The surface of the sun is about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5,500 degrees Celsius). The core, or center of the sun, is estimated to be more than 28 million degrees Fahrenheit (15.5 million C). • The sun is 864,000 miles (1.4 million km) in diameter, almost 35 times larger than the diameter of the earth and is about 330,000 times the mass of earth. • On a mountain summit on a hot summer day, it appears that the sun is really close to earth. However, it is nearly 93 million miles (150 million km) away. It takes sunlight about eight minutes to reach us. Even with that distance, the light and heat keep our planet warm, allowing plants to grow and even giving us a sunburn if we are not careful. Without the sun, earth would be frozen and dark all the time and could not support life as we know it. turn the page for more!

• Barrow, Alaska, doesn’t have any sunshine in December and January, but when summer rolls around, June through August, they are blessed with continual sunshine 24 hours a day. • Today, much attention is focused on our need for vitamin D, known as the sunshine vitamin. Being in the sun is the best way to satisfy your body’s need for vitamin D; it is produced in your skin when your skin is exposed to sunlight. • A lack of vitamin D can put you at increased risk for the bone disease osteoporosis. Low vitamin D can also cause poor metabolism, a weakened heart and cause your body to heal slowly from broken bones and cuts. • Even though Florida is nicknamed the “Sunshine State,” there are five other states that actually have more sunshine. According to the National Weather Service, Arizona, California, Texas, Nevada and New Mexico catch more rays. • The sunniest place in the United States where you can absorb some natural vitamin D is Yuma, Arizona. The next four places are: Redding, California; Flagstaff and Phoenix, Arizona; and Las Vegas, Nevada. • Juneau, Alaska, is the cloudiest city in the United States with only 30 percent of the annual possible sunshine. Other areas that lack sunshine, where vitamin D supplements may be needed, are Quillayute, Washington; Elkins, West Virginia; Hilo, Hawaii; and Anchorage, Alaska. • If you search the internet for businesses, towns, clubs and other organizations that use the word sunshine in their name, you will probably be amazed. It seems that everyone loves sunshine! The word seems to imply happiness. However, there are a few places borrowing the name that haven’t turned out so sunny. How about ghost towns? • Sunshine, Tennessee, is also known as Kinsel Springs, after S.J. Kinsel who established the town in the early 1900s. Located in what is now the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, at one time it had a large resort hotel, and people rode the train from Knoxville to enjoy swimming in the Little River and walking across the swinging bridge. After the hotel burned in the 1950s, and the railroad’s demand for the local lumber dried up, the company was discontinued and the town died. The swinging bridge has been renovated, but not much else is there today. • Mr. Kinsel, known for his wealth, was also known Continued on page 7

Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc
Look What the Humans Dragged In! We live in a world full of microbes, pollens, parasites, insects, environmental poisons and whatever lurks outside your house. Even totally indoor pets are exposed to the outdoors by people bringing things home on their shoes, cloths and body. Knowing that your pets are constantly exposed these outdoor villains, it is wise to take precautions to prevent giving your pets diseases. The first example is potting soil and plants added to the great indoors. Contaminated soil with intestinal parasites has been reported in 20-25% of soil samples examined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Cats playing in plant soil are exposed to roundworms, microbes, decaying plant material and toxic elements. Many plants can be toxic to humans and cats so know which plants can be poisonous. Walking in grass, crossing paths with a sneezing cat, stepping in dog or cat feces, picking up a flea or tick are just a few things that can happen throughout the day that you can bring home. If it often said by pet owners, my cat stays indoors and he does not need vaccinations, deworming, or other preventive medications – Wrong! Your cat can sometimes be at greater risk because it is assumed that there are no risks at all. Indoor cats don’t need vaccinations! Isolated humans and animals appear to be more susceptible to outbreaks of seasonal diseases because they are not exposed to small amounts of microbes every day in the environment. When high risk viruses become epidemic (flu/colds with humans or upper respiratory disease/feline distemper with cats) spreading to indoor populations can be a huge threat. Examples: Primates in zoos (apes, monkeys, lemurs, chimps, etc.) are isolated in cages or behind glass but when a human flu or cold epidemic strikes an area the zoo primates often get the diseases. People who cross paths with sick cats or where sick cats have been can bring that virus home on their shoes to give it to their indoor cat. Have you ever been checked out by your cat when you arrive home – the cat sniffing you coat, shoes and briefcase or purse. Wham – they are exposed! If you have concerns it is best to talk with our nurses at Cat Specialist to setup a good preventive health program for your cat(s). “An ounce of prevention is worth an pound of cure.” – Ben Franklin Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. Scott McQueen If you like a variety of colors available in a gemstone you will really like spinel. There are red, violet, pink, blue, orange, and black spinels. Finding your favorite color could take you on a tour of the world. The best red, pink and orange spinels originate from the rich gem gravels of Burma’s Mogok Stone Tract. The best blue and violet spinels are found in Sri Lanka. Gem spinel is also found in Vietnam, the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, and in Tanzania and Madagascar in Africa. Black spinel is mined in Thailand. Throughout history, spinel has been confused with ruby because red spinel is a rich, intense red similar to that of a red traffic signal. Frequently expensive rubies are substituted for by spinel in much the same way a diamond is substituted by cubic zirconia. Not to commit a fraud or theft but to prevent one. Spinel may take the place of a ruby that would have been displayed in public by an owner who is insecure about the rubies safety. Better to lose a $100,000 dollar spinel than a $1 million dollar ruby, don’t you agree? Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

Is actually pretty grimm. In 2005, Denvers Mayor John Hickenlooper launched the city’s sustainable development initiative, Greenprint Denver to identify opportunities for the city to lead by example, and to partner with community individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations and cultural institutions to help affect positive change in the community. What does it all mean? It means the City of Denver realizes there is a problem in Colorado that needs to be corrected. In 2004, Coloradoans disposed of a whopping 9 pounds of waste per person, per day, one of the highest volumes in the nation. In 2009, the Douglas County Household Chemical Roundup Program reported that it collected 168,937 pounds of waste. 132,875 pounds was reported to be “paint products”. That’s over 3.6 times the total cumulative amount of all other “household materials” collected. What can you do? Next time you have latex paint to dispose of, recycle it with a Colorado based recycler. GreenSheen will not only recycle the paint directly but also the containers it comes in with local companies thereby keeping all of the economic and environmental benefits local to Colorado. They are like 3 recycling Companies rolled into one nice little package. What else can you do? Next time you buy paint, buy GreenSheen. It is made locally from recycled materials that are gathered locally. It is high quality, professional grade paint that is available to you for as low as $8 per gallon. It’s a win…..win…..win for your pocketbook and the environment! Please see our ad on page 12 of Tidbits! GreenSheen 303-514-3955

Q: Regarding your recent column on pipe insulation and freezing: You blew it this time. As a chemical engineer who has worked with construction and operation of various facilities, I can categorically tell you that pipe insulation will not prevent pipes from freezing -- particularly where power and heat are not available. Pipe insulation will slow the transfer of heat and cold into or out of piping. However, if heat is not available for a sufficient time, the water in the pipe will freeze if the surrounding air temperature is below 32 F. It might take awhile, but it will freeze. The simplest method for preventing damage to piping systems is to drain the piping as fully as possible, thereby keeping any remaining water from damaging the pipes when it freezes. The freezing water will simply expand into the voids and not split or break the piping. When heat is again available, the warming will melt the frozen water. Adding water back into the piping will permit it to operate as usual, eventually. I had this experience in my house back in the ‘80s during a massive and long power outage. I drained the water and heating lines as best I could. When power came back I started the boiler, after pressuring that system, and waited. Slowly, the three heating zones came back into operation -- except for about 20 feet of heating pipe in the uninsulated space in the attic. That took days and the sun’s heat to return to normal operation. However, in a heated garage with pipe insulation, leaving the garage door open (accidentally) in 15 F weather did not protect the piping. Luckily only a split in a 2-foot length of pipe needed replacement. I worry that your column will give a false sense of security to homeowners who are not engineers or tradespeople and will find frozen and split lines after an outage. -- Ralph M., via email A: You told them, Ralph, and I thank you! While pipe insulation slows heat or cold transfer -- keeping hot water inside the pipes from cooling more quickly as it travels through unheated spaces -- it should not be relied upon to prevent pipes from freezing during prolonged cold spells. Always check the entire run, including insulated sections, when monitoring for frozen pipes.

Completion will also entitle the reader to a 7-inch cheese pizza and 16-ounce fountain drink from Mama Lisa’s Little Italy Pizzeria in Castle Pines. Reading logs must be returned to the library on or before March 28. Prizes are not guaranteed and are only available while supplies last. Douglas County Libraries offers multiple youth reading programs every year in support of its mission to advocate literacy and lifelong learning. Preparing for retirement — With advances in health care and a greater awareness of healthy living practices, many of us can expect to live two or three decades in an active retirement. To pay for all those years, you’ll need to save and invest early and often. So, while you’re working, take full advantage of your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, as well as contribute to a traditional or Roth IRA. After understanding your desired retirement lifestyle, your financial advisor can help you determine how, and how much, to save to provide for your income in retirement. Planning for the unexpected — You can’t see into the future, so you’ll need to prepare for anything that comes your way. By building an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, you can possibly avoid dipping into your long-term investments to pay for things such as a new furnace or a major car repair. And planning for the unexpected also means having sufficient life insurance to provide for your family in case anything happens to you. Educating your children — College is already expensive — and college expenses have been rising faster than the overall rate of inflation. If you want to help your children, or grandchildren, pay for school, you may want to invest in a college savings vehicle, such as the 529 plan. You can contribute large amounts to a 529 plan, and earnings have the opportunity to grow tax-free, provided withdrawals are used for higher education. (Withdrawals not used for education are subject to income taxes and a 10 percent penalty.) Living in retirement — Once you reach retirement, your investment emphasis will shift somewhat, from accumulating resources to making them last. By working with a financial advisor, you can develop a withdrawal strategy that can help make sure you don’t outlive the income you receive from your 401(k), IRA and other sources. At the same time, given the possible length of your retirement, you can’t ignore the need to invest for growth, so you may need to consider some growth-oriented vehicles in your portfolio to help your income keep pace with inflation. Transferring your wealth — When you’ve worked hard your whole life, you want to be able to leave a legacy — one that allows you to provide financial resources to the next generation and to those charitable organizations you may wish to support. So, when it’s time to think about transferring your wealth, you’ll want to consult with your financial and legal advisors to create an estate plan that’s appropriate for your needs. And because these plans can take significant time to create, you won’t want to wait too long to start. So, there you have them: five key financial areas on which to focus as you travel through life. By doing your homework, planning ahead and getting the help you need, you can make the journey a pleasant and productive one. On March 25, 1911, at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York’s Lower East Side, a fire quickly engulfs the factory and claims 146 lives, mostly young women. Because management had locked the exit doors, many of the garment workers either expired from asphyxiation or leapt from windows -- a fatal, 10-story fall. The factory’s owners were eventually found guilty on charges of manslaughter. On March 20, 1920, Bugatti delivers its first 16-valve car to a customer in Switzerland. The Bugatti was a symbol of wealth and status, and its cars were equipped with massive racing engines. The renowned American dancer Isadora Duncan was riding in a Bugatti when her trademark long scarf caught in a rear wheel of the vehicle, and she was instantly strangled to death. On March 22, 1947, President Harry Truman issues an executive decree establishing a sweeping loyalty investigation of federal employees in every department and agency. The program uncovered only a few employees whose loyalty could be “reasonably” doubted. On March 19, 1952, the one-millionth Jeep is produced. The name “Jeep” is reportedly derived from the Army’s 1941 request that car manufacturers develop a “General Purpose” vehicle. “G.P.” turned to “Jeep” somewhere along the battle lines. On March 21, 1971, “The Andromeda Strain,” the first movie to use computer animation, opens. The sci-fi thriller, featuring scientists racing against time and an alien virus, was the first of many films to be made from a Michael Crichton book. On March 24, 1989, the worst oil spill in U.S. territory begins when the supertanker Exxon Valdez runs aground on a reef in Prince William Sound in Alaska. An estimated 11 million gallons of oil eventually spilled into the water, polluting more than 700 miles of coastline.

Making medications that fit our patients... Health, Fitness & Wellness Expo This week’s column is going to be different from other columns you’ve read. I still have many things to cover in upcoming columns (topics including supplements-what, when, why and how; more talk on nutrition, and some helpful cardio tips). This week I want to talk about the importance of balance in our lives. In order to find and maintain complete health and wellness, we not only need to take care of our bodies through exercise and healthy eating habits, but we also need to make sure we take care of our minds and our souls. If one of these areas is out of balance, or isn’t being cared for, it can be detrimental to the balance we’re trying to achieve. I’ll be making a presentation which will include the following topics: weight training, heart health, nutrition, as well as mind/body/soul at the Jenny Lewis HEALTH, FITNESS & WELLNESS EXPO, March 31st, 10am-2pm at the Parker Pace Center. Please come see me and my Straight Up Fitness team, corporate sponsors and our 30 Health & Fitness vendors. We’ll have activities for adults and children, and tons of free stuff! Vendors will provide free goodies to all of our guests! You can also enter our raffle for a chance to win other awesome prizes!

ENTIRE ROOM
This took place in Charlotte , North Carolina . A lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against, among other things, fire.
for $12
Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars, the lawyer filed a claim against the insurance company.
WE’RE LOCAL! VISIT US AT 31 E. Panama Drive, Unit I, Centennial, CO 80121
In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost 'in a series of small fires' ... The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued and WON! (Stay with me.)

Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the 24 cigars that perished in the 'fires'.

She reaches for a baseball bat and starts hitting the blanket as hard as she can. Once she’s done, she goes to the kitchen to have a drink. As she enters, she sees her husband there, reading a magazine. “Hi Darling”, he says, “Your parents have come to visit us, so I let them stay in our bedroom. Did you say ‘hello’?”

With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine.

Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company, in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacceptable 'fire' and was obligated to pay the claim.
