If you look at the labels on the clothes you are wearing, at least some of your apparel is probably made from cotton. You may not realize the versatility of this plant. It is not only used as a fiber but also in food products, fertilizer, fuel and more. This week, Tidbits looks at this remarkable plant. • Cotton is a natural fiber whose history goes back thousands of years. Civilizations in India, China and Egypt grew cotton as well as the Mayans in Guatemala, Yucatan and other parts of Mexico. The oldest archaeological evidence of clothing made from cotton comes from the Indus Valley of today’s Pakistan. Cotton “bolls” that start in a field are used to produce much of the fabric in the world. • The first cotton grown in the United States was in Virginia and Florida in the early 17th century. By the end of the 18th century, cotton had become the biggest industry in the United States. This was helped by Eli Whitney’s cotton gin invention in 1793. • Whitney’s machine provided a faster way to separate cotton from its seeds. It could clean the cotton about 10 times faster than doing it by hand. turn the page for more!

COTTON (continued): • When we think of cotton, most of us think of comfortable blue jeans, flannel shirts, underwear or the 800-thread-count soft sheets that we sleep on at night. Cotton provides all of that and a whole lot more. • Cotton is used more than any fiber, natural or manmade, in the world. It is a daily part of our lives and is still today one of the leading cash crops for farmers in the United States. Every part of a cotton plant is useful. • The most important part of the cotton plant is the fiber, or lint, which is used to make cloth. The fiber has to be separated from the seeds, which are quite sticky. This is why the cotton gin was so important. When the fiber and seeds had to be separated by hand, it took many laborious hours. • “Linters,” the short fuzz remaining on the seeds after separation of the lint, provide cellulose for making explosives, plastics and other products. They are also incorporated into high quality paper products and processed into batting for the padding used in mattresses and cushions for furniture and automobile seats.

• The cottonseeds are a valuable byproduct as well. They are crushed and separated into three products: oil, hulls and meal. Cottonseed oil is used for salad dressing, cooking oil and shortening. Cottonseed oil has no cholesterol has little or no trans-fats, making it a good option for healthy cooking. • The meal and hulls are used for livestock, poultry and fish feed and also fertilizer. After all of these parts are taken away, the remaining leaves and stalks of the cotton plant are plowed under to enrich the soil. • For years, the “Cotton Row” district of Memphis, Tennessee, was the center of the worldwide cotton trade market. The Cotton Museum at the Cotton Exchange opened in 2006 in the building that was once the place where cotton was inspected, bought and sold, and shipped around the world. The museum has artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of cotton, its history and its impact on the region and the world. • Another museum dedicated to cotton is The Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum in Greenville, Texas. This museum is dedicated to preserving the history of America’s cotton industry. The museum includes the oldest house in Greenville and an actual cotton patch. • The states where cotton grows are sometimes referred to as the “Cotton Belt.” These states are all across the southern edge of the United States. They are Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Continued on page 7

Mosquitoes Bring Heartworm Season –
Prevention is Key!
FIRE MITIGATION
Cats and dogs can be infected with heartworm disease by the bite from a carrier mosquito. The coyote has become the ‘natural’ reservoir for the disease. Dogs are the primary host for the disease, but cats and other animals can become infected, and the consequences are serious. Indoor cats are just as susceptible as outdoor cats!

The good news is that this disease can be prevented. There is no effective treatment once your cat is infected, so prevention is the key. A safe, monthly topical medication is the best way to protect your cat(s). If you have questions please call our hospital.

• By 3 years of age, 80% of cats need or have had dental cleaning. • The new ‘balanced diets’ give cats nutrition that addresses deficiencies in: joint health, teeth, haircoat, digestion/gi, urinary/kidney and heart. • By 10 years of age, 90% show radiographic signs of arthritis. • Life stages: Youth/Adolesence = 1-3 years; Adult = 3-7 years; Young Senior = 8-14 years; Mature Senior = 15-36+. • The top 3 reasons why cat’s lifespans have doubled in the last 30 years: vaccinations against killing diseases, parasite control/ deworming and a move to an indoor lifestyle. Nutrition is number 4. • The number 1 infectious disease in cats is dental disease. • Cats are genetically predisposed to heart disease. 10-20% of cats have cardiac disease but don’t show clinical signs until late in the disease process. Heart disease can affect any age of cat – kitten to senior. • By 10 years of age, 35% of cats are beginning to show signs of chronic kidney disease that blood and urine tests can pick up. • Chronic gi disease is seen in cats – young to senior. • Liver disease is divided into 2 groups: young cats likely show infectious disease and older cats have chronic immune mediated disease. • Skin disease in Colorado occurs in 35% of cats. • Heartworm disease in Colorado is seen in 1-5% of cats depending on where you live and whether mosquitoes and coyotes are prevalent in your area. • Nutritional deficiencies (mild to severe) occur in about 70% of all cats. Modern science is only beginning to understand the needs of the feline. • The ideal diet for a domestic feline – the mouse: 55% protein, 37% fat, 5% carbohydrate, and 3% fiber. • Higher % carbohydrate dry diets may increase the potential for chronic dehydration and diabetes. • Cats are very prone to poisoning because their liver has limited metabolic pathways to inactivate toxins. Cats usually avoid ingesting most poisons. • The number 1 toxic plant to cats = Lilies (Easter/Tiger). The number 1 common household poison to cats? = Tylenol.

New Cat Painkiller! Have you ever wondered what your pet is thinking or whether the pet is in pain or not? Our feline friends are one of the best at hiding pain. Thus, there is exciting news for everyone, but cats especially! The FDA has recently approved a first of its kind painkiller for our furry friends that controls postoperative pain and inflammation that is associated with orthopedic surgery, ovariohysterectomy (spay) and castration (neuter). Up until now there has been no easy solution for postoperative pain in cats receiving these procedures. Novartis Animal Claudette Health Inc. has Anderson come out with Onsior Tablets that, at this time, is approved for cats weighing as least 5.5 lbs and at least 6 months of age., . Novartis, the maker of Onsior Tablets is still working on the marketing and packaging for this product so it will not be available until later in the year. It has been used in Europe since 2009 as relief for chronic and acute pain. We are very excited for our feline friends and their owners and plan to have this item available as soon as Novartis gets it on the market. For more information please see Novartis Animal health website: http://www.ah.novartis.com. A Mobile Veterinarian Steven Pereira DVM 303-646-5567

EXECUTIVES REALTY, LLC
Scott McQueen The cat's-eye chrysoberyl reminds many of the eye of a panther with its distinct band of light that crosses its face from top to bottom or side to side. This mysterious looking gemstone is a cousin of the color-changing alexandrite. Chrysoberyl colors range from a honey brown to an apple green with the rich gold colors deemed the most valuable. The principal value factor is the strength and sharpness of the eye. Fine cat’s-eye chrysoberyl often shows a “milk and honey” effect. When a bright light is directed at the side of the stone, one side of the eye will be milky white while the other will glow a honey gold. If you rotate the stone, the colors switch. Perhaps the changing aspect of this stone is why men love cat’s-eye chrysoberyl in their jewelry. And then there’s the myth that a cat’s eye can point fortune in the direction of the one wearing it – just another reason to own this enigmatic gemstone. If you want to find a cat’s-eye for yourself you’ll have to travel to Sri Lanka, Brazil or China and while you’re hunting, don’t confuse the real chrysoberyl cat’s eye with quartz cat’s eyes. Or just drop in to Pinetree Jewelers and we’ll help you find the perfect cat’s eye for you. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The climate and soil conditions of these areas provide a great cotton-growing environment. • Are you curious as to what can be made from one bale of cotton? How about 4,321 socks, 3,085 diapers (yes, the old fashioned cotton kind!), 1,256 pillowcases, 690 bath towels, 409 skirts or 250 pairs of pants! • Most people have heard of “hand-me-downs” and probably have worn them. Blue jeans are especially known for this because of their durability. Handme-down blue jeans were taken to a new level in 2006 when Cotton Incorporated created a marketing initiative to recycle denim for insulation for housing. • The “Cotton. From Blue to Green. ®” denim drive was a student-run campaign on several college campuses to educate students on the renewable and recyclable attributes of denim. Blue jeans were donated and then given a “new life” as housing insulation for houses. In the spring of 2007, 30 homes were built for families by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge (Louisiana) who lost their homes as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Twelve of those homes were insulated with UltraTouch™ Denim Insulation.
Artistic Iron designs and manufactures a wide range of custom steel and iron products. For more than three decades, Artistic Iron has provided unique solutions to enhance the appearance and security of homes and businesses throughout the Denver area.
• Steel Storm & Security Doors • Railings • Fences & Gates
• A campaign by National Geographic Kids Magazine in 2009 asked readers to donate their old jeans with the goal being to set a Guinness World Record™ for the “most items of clothing collected for recycling.” The record was announced in Washington, D.C. on August 12, 2009, with 33,088 pieces of denim donated. These jeans were given to the “Cotton. From Blue to Green.®” campaign for more housing insulation projects. What a terrific way to help people, recycle and keep blue jeans out of our landfills! • Cotton has been an important part of our lives for many years and will likely continue to be. As the advertisements say, it is the “fabric of our lives.” Cotton is now grown in 70 countries, with China producing the most at about 25 percent and the Unites States producing almost 20 percent. China and India are the largest producers of cotton, while the United States is the world’s largest exporter of cotton. OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

• The owner of the plantation in the 1930s, Mrs. Cammie Henry, was a promoter of the arts and encouraged artists to visit her home to write and paint. One of her frequent visitors was painter Alberta Kinsey, from New Orleans. She was there when a dear friend of Mrs. Henry’s, Mrs. Blythe White Rand, came for one of her many visits. Rand was an avid gardener and brought a bouquet of zinnias for her hostess. • On that day, in 1939, Kinsey started an oil painting of the zinnias in an old, hammered copper pitcher. Hunter saw her at work and commented that she might be able to paint. Kinsey stopped her work and gave Hunter the pitcher, flowers and some partially used tubes of oil paint and told her to give it a try.

·Ask for copies of the company’s bond and insurance certificates. ·Never allow a contractor to do a job without a permit. This makes sure the job is properly inspected. ·Don’t pay up front. Typically, you would pay 50% when the materials are delivered, 40% when the work is completed and the final 10% after the final inspection. ·Don’t sign over an insurance-settlement check or let them file your claim. Once the roofer has inspected your home, call your insurance agent. They can discuss your deductible, the effect on your policy, and the next steps to take. If the storm does severe damage to your roof and the roof is leaking, take the necessary steps to mitigate the damage. Call a roofer and have them get a tarp covering holes/spots where it is leaking until the insurance adjuster can get to your home.

We've used Rick O'Brien for years. He was recommended to us by our contractor in 2002, and we couldn't have been more pleased with the quality and the thoroughness of his work. We used him for a bathroom remodel in 2005 and again in 2010 when we added on to our house. Rick walked us through the process, asking questions along the way that ensured that the job was done right the first time. Pendants and chandeliers, puck lights and cans, heated tile systems and outdoor outlets - Rick has done it all! He even changed out our 1980's electrical box when we realized it had been recalled! Over the years we have learned the value of subcontractors you can count on, and O'Brien Electric is as reliable as can be. Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Are You an "Environmentally Conscious" Investor? On April 22, the 41st anniversary of Earth Day will be celebrated by millions of people around the world. As a global citizen, you may wish to commemorate this event by thinking of ways you can help Cindy Rose the environment, such as boosting your recycling efforts and cutting back on your energy consumption. But you can also contribute to a “greener” world through your investment activities. Specifically, you can take action in two related areas: reducing your paperwork and consolidating your accounts. Let’s take a look at both of these possibilities. First, if you want to decrease your investment-related paperwork, you need to take advantage of all the paperless options that have probably been made available to you by those financial services companies with which you work. So, for example, you may want to choose to receive online statements, rather than paper ones. And when you make transactions, you may also be able to receive online confirmations. Not only will online documents help save paper, but it can also help protect you from identity theft. The more paper statements, confirmations and similar items lying around, the greater the possibility of their being exposed to prying eyes. (In fact, if you do still receive paper documents, you may want to shred them soon after you’ve reviewed the information.) If you think you may need to produce this investmentrelated information, possibly to give to your tax advisor, you can always go back to your financial service provider’s web site, access the documents you need, and print them. Most companies make this information readily accessible to their clients for months, or even years, after it is initially generated. Now, let’s move to another environmentally conscious aspect of investing: consolidating your accounts. Start by listing all your financial assets, such as your bank accounts, investments, IRAs and employer-sponsored retirement plans, such as a 401(k), if you worked for a private employer, a 457(b), if you worked for a state or local government, or a 403(b), if you worked for a school or other tax-exempt organization. By consolidating as many of these accounts as possible with one financial services provider, you can significantly reduce the number of statements you receive and the paperwork you generate. But the reduction of paperwork is only one benefit you’ll receive from consolidating accounts. You might also be able to lower the amount of fees you pay. And even more importantly, by placing all your financial assets with one financial-services provider, you will be better able to follow a single, unified investment strategy. If you work with a financial advisor, he or she will find it much easier to identify your strengths and weaknesses and help you allocate your investment dollars in a way that’s appropriate for your retirement goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Earth Day only happens once a year. So take this opportunity to think about how you can do your part, through a few simple actions tied to your investments, to help improve the environment we all share.

JESUS IS ALIVE! The Bible tells us in Matthew 28:6 (NLT) He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. This week marks THE greatest week in the history of the world. The death and resurrection of Jesus is by far, the most significant event in the history of all mankind, there will never be another day such as that. And because of that day, you can have hope, you can have courage, you can have expectancy in your heart of better things to come! This Sunday we celebrate Resurrection Sunday, the day our Lord Jesus by the power of God, was raised from the dead, and now He is Lord and King of the universe. He is now seated at the right hand of the Father and the Bible tells us He is ever making intercession for you and for me. In other words you have a lawyer in heaven, that pleads your case before the judge, and when the judge sees you, you are declared not guilty because of the shed blood of the Lamb. Jesus had paid the ultimate price for you and for me. We have been redeemed, we have been bought back, our redemption has been paid for in full. The prophet Isaiah declared it long before it happened, Isaiah 1:18 (NLT) “Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool. Praise God for Jesus, He has once and for all, paid the price for your sin and for my sin. There is nothing on this earth that you can do to make yourself holy and in right standing with him. The Bible tells us that our works are as filthy rags, in others words, totally worthless. We have all sinned, we have all fallen short, there is nothing we can do on our own that can justify our coming in to the presences of the Father. But oh the blood of Jesus, oh the blood of the spotless Lamb that was slain before the foundation of the world. Because of the finished work of the cross, because Jesus has risen from the dead, the Bible tells us that all who call upon him will be saved. And how does that work? It is easy, you simply confess your sins before Him, ask Him to forgive you, and the blood then begins to go to work on your behalf. Romans 10:6-10 (NLT) And that message is the very message about faith that we preach: 9 If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. Join us this Sunday at 10:30 as we celebrate this wonderful event and give glory to God!

The Wrong Address! This one is priceless...A lesson to be learned from typing the wrong email address!!!!
Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the email.

In a trial, a southern small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know me?” She responded, “Why, yes I do know you, Mr. Williams. I’ve known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you’ve been a disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you’re a big shot when you haven’t the brains to realize you’ll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.” The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do he pointed across the room and asked, “do you know the defense attorney?” Mrs. Jones replied, “Why, yes I do. I’ve known Mr. Bradley since he was a boy too. He’s lazy, bigoted and he has a drinking problem. He can’t build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with 3 different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him.” The defense attorney nearly died. The Judge then asked both counsellors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice said, “if either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I’ll send you both to the electric chair.
