CRACKS SOME EGGS! by Patricia L. Cook

Eggs are a big seller all year long as one of the most popular breakfast foods, an essential ingredient for baking and more. But at Easter, they are at the top of the grocery list, the star of the show! • Eggs are rich in nutrients, containing almost every vitamin and mineral needed by humans. The protein of eggs is the standard by which other protein sources are compared. Large eggs contain approximately 6 grams of protein and 4.5 grams of fat, with about half of the fat being the healthier mono-unsaturated variety. Eggs only contain about 70 calories each. • While once vilified as being unhealthy and the cause of heart attacks because of their high cholesterol, the egg’s reputation has recently been redeemed. More doctors and nutritionists are backing away from the idea that eggs should be avoided. Eggs have so many good health benefits that studies now say most people are fine eating an egg a day. 8900 S BROMPTON WAY PARKER CO 80134 303-841-4910 Mon-Fri: 8 AM to 5:30 PM Saturday: 9 AM to 3 PM

• To be sure, medical professionals are not recommending a three-egg omelet with sausage or bacon every day. If cholesterol is a concern, egg whites are fine since the yolk contains all of the cholesterol in an egg. The American Heart Association amended its egg-eating guidelines recently to say there is, “no longer a specific recommendation on the number of egg yolks a person may consume in a week.” turn the page for more!

CRACKS SOME EGGS (continued): • Not only does the yolk contain cholesterol, it also contains the vitamins and minerals that make it a nutritional powerhouse. Egg yolks are one of the few foods with naturally occurring vitamin D. Hard-boiled eggs, like those decorated, hidden and hunted at Easter, provide about 17 grams of protein. Egg whites are an excellent source of low-fat protein. • Eggs are also a good source of choline, which has been shown to help preserve memory, as well as lutein and zeaxanthin, which may help prevent vision loss. Nutritionists say that eggs can help with weight management, eye health, muscle strength, brain functions and are valuable for healthy pregnancies. • Easter eggs and the Easter bunny are considered symbols of new life and rebirth. Ancient cultures like the Persians, Hindus and Egyptians believed the world started as a large egg. • The new life symbolism was probably the association that made way for the Easter Bunny. Rabbits, like eggs, have always been associated with birth and fertility.

• The legend of the Easter Bunny had its start in Germany. The story goes that a poor woman living in Germany decorated eggs to hide and be hunted as entertainment for her children. As soon as the eggs were found by the children, a large bunny rabbit was seen hopping away! Many stories have been written about the bunny ever since, and children in many places around the world look forward to egg hunts and egg and bunny-shaped candies around Easter. • Many egg hunts now use plastic eggs, often filled with candy or toys. Real eggs, if they are used for hunts, need to be handled carefully. • The Egg Safety Center recommends that, “Hard-cooked eggs should be refrigerated within two hours of cooking and used within one week.” Another food authority, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), says Easter eggs are safe to eat after a hunt if you follow some basic guidelines: “Use food-safe coloring to dye the eggs and refrigerate them within two hours of boiling them.” • Since most Easter egg hunts take more than two hours from hiding to finding to eating, it is usually best to use the plastic variety. • Other information from the USDA says that boiling an egg removes a naturally occurring protective coating on egg shells that then leaves the shells vulnerable to bacteria. If any eggs are cracked, they are very susceptible to bacteria as well and should be discarded. Continued on page 7

Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc

Why/d? – A New Diet (Y/d) for Hyperthyroidism Sometimes it appears that the urge to put out a new product is motivated more by the marketing department that the researchers. A new diet to treat hyperthyroidism has been released with only a few small studies over a very limited time. No long term studies have been done to date and the number of patients followed has been few.

Hyperthyroidism in cats is usually caused by a benign tumor that over secretes thyroid hormones. The tumor grows slowly and secretes more and more thyroid hormone. The ‘gold standard’ treatment in all species is radio-iodine (I-131) which usually cures the disease. Surgery to remove the tumor(s) can cure 80% of hyperthyroid patients but involves risks of anesthesia and 20% of the patients need radio-iodine to finish the job. Medical treatment and the new diet (Y/d) are ‘bandaid’ treatments that do nothing to treat the tumor – they affect the hormone or the hormone production. For a long term treatment these treatments are useful in only a small number of patients. The cost for these ‘bandaid’ treatments mounts up and can easily pay for radio-iodine 4 to 5 times over time. So, how does Y/d work? Y/d has an extremely low level of iodine (the thyroid glands use the iodine to product thyroid hormones) so the product creates a lower production due to a deficiency of iodine. Historically, when a deficiency of iodine occurs in any species this causes goiter. Too little or too much iodine has been shown to cause thyroid cancer in some patients. Getting cats to eat only this diet may be the hardest challenge for this method of treatment. If the cat eats any other food, treats or supplements the value of the diet is void. The conclusion that most veterinary specialists have come to: it is too early to assess whether this new diet will ever be effective. Again, with a cure for hyperthyroidism -- Why/d? Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. Scott McQueen Topaz is known as an apocalyptic stone because it will be used to form the foundations of the twelve gates to the New Jerusalem, the Holy City of God, heaven itself! (See Revelation 21:20) The Romans dedicated the topaz to Jupiter. This tells us that topaz has been known for well over 2,000 years and is a symbol of beauty and splendor. Mystics believe it can dispel sadness, anger, and nighttime fears. “Believers” think it will warn them of poisions and protect them from sudden death. It is reputed to make men handsome and intelligent, and sterile women fertile and happy. But don’t rely too much on those myths because one of them says that if you throw a topaz into a pot of boiling water that you can dip your hand into it and pull it out unharmed. Topaz is a beautiful stone, but I’m not going to try that!

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Locating Source of Toilet Leak Q: The other day I noticed a small puddle of water at the base of the toilet. I wiped it up, only to notice the next day that the puddle was back. It’s clean water so I think it’s a leak from the tank, but I can’t find any visible drips. The tank itself tends to sweat a bit, so I can’t pinpoint where the water is coming from. Should I call in a plumber? -- Christine H., Toledo, Ohio A: Try a few more things to try and pinpoint the source of the problem. Visually check the tank and the bowl for cracks -- most toilets are pretty sturdy, so it’s unusual for them to crack for no reason, but do check. The tank is more likely to crack, and if so, it needs to be completely replaced. At least it’s easier than replacing the bowl. If you don’t find a crack, check the shutoff valve (usually what looks like a faucet handle jutting from the wall below and behind the toilet) and its attached inlet tube for leaks. Flush the toilet so that the tank begins filling, and observe the inlet components. You may also need to run your hand along the valve, inlet tube and the inlet connection at the bottom of the tank, checking if any water is leaking and running down the inlet tube or the back of the toilet, out of sight. Next, test for a silent leak to confirm whether the leak is happening in the tank or not. Take the tank top off. Flush the toilet and let the tank refill completely. Then, take a crayon or wax pencil and mark the high-water point with a small line. Walk away for 10 minutes, come back and see if the water is still at that point or has gone down. If it has fallen below the line, mark the new water point and leave it for another 10 minutes. Check again to see if the water level continues to fall. If the tank is leaking, check some possible sources of the leak. First, make sure the flapper valve at the bottom of the tank is completely closed. This is one of the biggest causes of a slow leak from a tank -- although it doesn’t explain the water on the floor, as the water leaks through the flapper valve into the toilet bowl. Next, check the seal at the base of the flush assembly, and any other visible seal, for deterioration. Finally, consider that small amount of condensation on the tank. Could it be the cause of the puddle? Try insulating the interior of the tank, or sliding a tank cover over the outside (both available at home improvement stores) to reduce the condensation. Once you’ve eliminated all the smaller reasons for the puddle of water on the floor, it’s time to look at a more serious possibility: that the seal between the base of the toilet and the floor has begun to fail. It’s not a particularly difficult or time-consuming repair, but the toilet will have to be lifted off the base in order for the wax ring, which acts as the main sealant, to be replaced. If you don’t have much experience with toilet repairs, this is where a plumber would come in. HOME TIP: To keep the seals and other parts of a flush assembly in top shape for years, avoid placing a bleach-based toilet cleaner cake in the tank. Bleach can corrode the assembly components. Send your questions or tips to ask@thisisahammer.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

CRACK SOME EGGS (continued): • The President and First Lady host the White House Easter Egg Roll every year on the Monday after Easter. The Easter Egg Roll activities were started in the mid-1800s and were originally held at the U.S. Capitol grounds. After years of wear and tear to the lawn, Congress passed a law in 1876 forbidding the Capitol grounds from being used as a children’s playground.

• In 1878, when President Rutherford B. Hayes heard of the law, he issued an official order that any children who showed up at the Capitol grounds for an egg roll should be sent to the White House. Since that time, successive Presidents have continued the tradition, with the event held on the south lawn of the White House. It has only been cancelled a few times because of bad weather and during World Wars I and II. During the war years, egg rollers still congregated, some at the Washington Monument, the National Zoo and even at the Capitol grounds. (Remember, that was forbidden by law!) • Pysanky are Ukrainian Easter eggs (Pysanky is plural; the singular is pysanka). Pysanky folk art, where eggs are decorated using beeswax in a wax resist method, is a practice that has been around for thousands of years in Ukraine. Over 10,000 pysanky are displayed in the egg-shaped Pysanka Museum that opened in September 2000 in Kolomyia, Ukraine. • Canada, specifically Vegreville, Alberta, is home to the world’s largest pysanka. The area has many Ukrainian immigrants, and the pysanka was chosen as a symbol to honor the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in their centennial year of 1975.

A: Porcelain veneers are thin, durable shells designed to cover the front of the tooth. They are often used to lighten stains, close gaps, and even alter crooked or malformed Cindy Rose teeth. You can change the shape, color, and length of your teeth using veneers. They are made of porcelain, and are durable, stainresistant, natural-looking, and easy to maintain. Veneers are custom-fitted to your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel and bonding the veneer to your teeth using a safe, high tech polymer resin.

Q:

SEE THE CRIMINALS BEFORE THEY SEE YOU!

Will I need a shot?

A: Porcelain Veneers require little or no shots, and are painless. Q: What’s the difference between Porcelain Veneers and Crowns? A: Porcelain Veneers cover the front of the tooth. Crowns cover the entire tooth’s front and back. Veneers provide a much more conservative approach to changing a tooth’s color, size, or shape.

Early IRA Funding Can Pay Off Over Time

You’ve got until April 17 to contribute to your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) for the 2011 tax year. That’s not a lot of time, but if you have some money available, and you haven’t completely funded your IRA for 2011, consider doing so before the deadline. And once you’ve “maxed out” on your IRA for last year, why not get a jump on 2012? Actually, you could have started contributing to your 2012 IRA as early as Jan. 2. In fact, if you can get into the Cindy Rose habit of fully funding your IRA each January, you’ll give your money 15 extra months of growth potential, as opposed to waiting until mid-April of the following year. If you factor in all the years you’ll be contributing to your IRA before you retire, those extra months of growth opportunities, repeated over decades, could end up providing you with a fair amount of extra cash when you start tapping into your IRA at retirement. Of course, you may not find it all that easy to come up with the full IRA contribution amount at one time. (In 2012, you can put up to $5,000 into a Roth or traditional IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older.) But if you look at your entire financial picture, you may be able to think of some resources. Here are a few suggestions: Put your tax refund to work. In 2011, the average tax refund was about $3,000, according to the IRS. If you received that amount in 2012, and you applied it toward your IRA, you would already have met half the contribution limit (if you are 50 or older) or more than half (if you’re younger than 50). Take advantage of interest payments or dividends. If you own income-producing investments, you may find that they can help you fund your IRA early. For example, if you own dividendpaying stocks, and you don’t typically reinvest the dividends, consider putting some of these funds into your IRA. (Keep in mind, though, that stocks can reduce or discontinue dividends at any time). And you can do the same thing with any interest payments you receive from bonds. Put other “windfalls” into your IRA. If you receive a windfall, such as a bonus from your employer or a gift of cash, think about putting it into your IRA. If none of these options present themselves, and you can’t afford to write out a big check to fund your IRA very early in the year, do the best you can to reach the contribution limit as soon as possible. To make this happen, consider setting up a monthly automatic transfer from your checking or savings account into your IRA. Even if you were to divide these transfers into 15 equal payments totaling $5,000 (or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older), you would still be funding your IRA more quickly than if you would have scrambled to contribute in the last few months before the tax filing deadline. No matter when you do it, fully funding your IRA is a great way to help build resources for retirement. But the earlier, the better — so do whatever you can to beat that tax deadline each year. INTERESTING FACTS In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are 'limbs,' therefore painting them would cost the buyer more.. Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.' (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint) As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October) Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term 'big wig.' Today we often use the term 'here comes the Big Wig' because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy. In the late 1700's, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The 'head of the household' always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor. Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the 'chair man.' Today in business, we use the expression or title 'Chairman' or 'Chairman of the Board.' Personal hygiene left much room for improvement. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, 'mind your own bee's wax.' Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term 'crack a smile'. In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt . . . Therefore, the expression 'losing face.'

Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the 'Ace of Spades.' To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't 'playing with a full deck.' Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since

303-501-6470 ProvidentMediaGroup.com there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were told to 'go sip some ale' and listen to people's conversations and political concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. 'You go sip here' and 'You go sip there.' The two words 'go sip' were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term 'gossip.' At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in 'pints' and who was drinking in 'quarts,' hence the term 'minding your'P's and Q's ' In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen.. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem...how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a 'Monkey' with 16 round indentations. However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make 'Brass Monkeys.' Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey.. Thus, it was quite literally, 'Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.' (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you.)

On April 20, 1841, Edgar Allen Poe’s short story, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” first appears in Graham’s Lady’s and Gentleman’s Magazine. It is generally considered to be the first detective story. Like the later Sherlock Holmes stories, the tale is narrated by the detective’s roommate. On April 22, 1889, at precisely high noon, thousands of would-be settlers make a mad dash into the newly opened Oklahoma Territory to claim cheap land. All told, from 50,000 to 60,000 settlers entered the territory that day. Towns like Norman, Oklahoma City, Kingfisher and Guthrie sprang into being almost overnight. On April 21, 1918, in the skies over France, Manfred von Richthofen, the notorious German flying ace known as “The Red Baron” with 80 victories under his belt, is killed by Allied fire. He was 25 years old.

On April 17, 1937, Daffy Duck makes his debut in the Warner Bros. short “Porky’s Duck Hunt.” In the 1920s, movie houses had started showing a short cartoon before feature presentations, but the form became more popular after sound was introduced in 1928. On April 16, 1947, in Texas City’s port on Galveston Bay, a fire aboard the French freighter Grandcamp ignites ammonium nitrate, causing a massive blast that destroys much of the city and takes nearly 600 lives. The fire department tried to douse the flames, but the ship was so hot that the water from their fire hoses was instantly vaporized. On April 19, 1957, the Brattle Theater in Cambridge, Mass., presents its first showing of “Casablanca,” introducing a new generation to Humphrey Bogart, who had died months earlier. Bogart had been wounded aboard a Navy ship during World War 1. His upper lip was scarred and partially paralyzed, giving him the tough-guy poker face and slight lisp that characterized his acting. On April 18, 1983, Joan Benoit wins her second Boston Marathon in the women?s division with a time of 2:22:43. The inaugural Boston Marathon was run on Apr. 19, 1897, and was a men-only event until 1972, when women were officially allowed to compete.
