TIDBITS® SAYS HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO
APRIL BABIES by Kathy Wolfe
Happy birthday wishes from Tidbits to those born during the month of April, including these familiar folks. • “Mr. Las Vegas” Wayne Newton hit Sin City when he was a junior in high school. He was already somewhat of a star, having had a daily radio show at age six and even performing for President Truman while in the first grade. His first Vegas gig was scheduled for two weeks, but turned into 46 weeks of six shows a day, six days a week. It’s been said, “Las Vegas without Wayne Newton is like Disneyland without Mickey Mouse.” Newton plays 13 different musical instruments that he incorporates into his shows. Long-time fans will remember his hits “Red Roses for a Blue Lady” and “Danke Schoen.” • James Douglas Muir Leno has hosted “The Tonight Show” since 1992. Leno’s fifth-grade teacher made the comment, “If Jay spent as much time studying as he does trying to be a comedian, he’d be a big star.” His high school guidance counselor recommended that the dyslexic Leno drop out of school, but instead, Leno went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in speech therapy. He doesn’t drink, smoke or gamble; rather he spends his spare time working on one of the 200 vehicles in his private car collection. He also writes a column for Popular Mechanics. turn the page for more!

APRIL BABIES continued: • Chan Kong-sang was born in April of 1954 in Hong Kong, where his parents worked at the French Embassy, his father as a cook, and his mother as a housekeeper. When his parents moved to Australia to work at an American Embassy there, at age six, Chan Kong-sang was sent to the China Drama Academy, a boarding school with an extensive martial arts and acrobatics curriculum. Upon his graduation 10 years later, he had difficulty finding any job besides unskilled labor because he had never been taught how to read or write at the Academy. During a brief stint as a construction worker, his mentor was a man named Jack, who called Kongsang “Little Jack,” then Jackie. Jackie Chan took a job as a movie stuntman and has since appeared in more than 100 films. He performs most of his own stunts and has broken his sternum, neck, cheekbones, hips, ribs, fingers, toes, and nose, as well as fractured his skull in a fall from a tree. • The United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth will turn 85 this April. Her 58-year reign began in 1952 upon the death of her father King George VI. When Elizabeth was born, she was third in the line of succession to the throne behind her uncle and father. George became king when his older brother abdicated to marry a divorced socialite. Elizabeth met her future husband Philip, a prince of Greece and Denmark, when she was just 13. The pair is third cousins. According to Forbes magazine, the queen’s net worth is in the $450 million range. • Speaking of royalty, Denmark’s newest princess made her appearance in April of 2007. Princess Isabella is the first girl born into Denmark’s royal family since 1946. She is third in line to the throne, after her father and big brother. • Fame and success haven’t come easy to actor Al Pacino. Born in East Harlem in April 1940, his early ambition was to become a baseball player. Pacino started smoking when he was nine and was drinking and smoking pot at 13. His poor performance in school led him to drop out at 17 and work jobs such as messenger boy, busboy and janitor to finance acting lessons. Two of his best friends died at a young age as a result of drug abuse. While getting his start in theater, he was often homeless, sleeping on the streets or in theaters. Landing a role in 1972’s “The Godfather” changed his future, earning him the first of his seven Oscar nominations. Entertainment Weekly has voted Pacino the 41st greatest movie star of all time.

Prevention is Key! Cats and dogs can be infected with heartworm disease by the bite from a carrier mosquito. The coyote has become the ‘natural’ reservoir for the disease. Dogs are the primary host for the disease, but cats and other animals can become infected, and the consequences are serious. Indoor cats are just as susceptible as outdoor cats! The good news is that this disease can be prevented. There is no effective treatment once your cat is infected, so prevention is the key. A safe, monthly topical medication is the best way to protect your cat(s). If you have questions please call our hospital.

Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc
Tylenol Can Kill Your Cat! ®
Tylenol® (acetaminophen) may be used safely by humans but it is a deadly poison when given to cats. Well intentioned owners are unaware of how toxic this drug is to their cat. Ingestion of 20mg/# of acetaminophen is fatal to most cats – this is the equivalent to one regular-strength tablet to the average 9-11# cat. Tylenol’s® toxic effects in cats are due to the development of methemoglobinemia and Heinz-body hemolytic anemia. The oxygen carrying capacity of the red blood cells is impaired and the cat dies of metabolic asphyxiation. Getting the ingested Tylenol® out of your cat’s system by inducing vomiting and rapid medical treatment to reverse the methemoglobinemia is essential. Even with intense medical therapy many cats die. The early signs of acetaminophen poisoning are decreased appetite, vomiting, and drooling. The appearance of blue gums or brown-colored mucous membranes appear a few hours after ingestion and is caused by methemoglobinemia. Swelling of the face and paws is also commonly seen with this type of poisoning. With more time the destruction of the red blood cells starts and a hemolytic anemia develops. A grave prognosis is seen when methemoglobinemia and Heinz-body anemia are severe and non-responsive to appropriate treatment. Cats that recover have no long term effects. Never give anti-inflammatory medications to your cat unless they have been prescribed by your veterinarian. If your cat gets into human medications immediately call your veterinarian, emergency hospital or Pet Poison Helpline 800.213.6680 (a consultation fee is charged). Rapid treatment gives your cat its best chance of survival. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. A MOBILE VETERINARIAN At your last veterinary appointment was it recommended that your pet needs a 'dental' exam? Did the veterinarian justify this recommendation? If not read on. The recommendation goes beyond your pet having the million dollar smile or good breath. Actually one research grouped deemed a dental prophylaxis 'the one best thing you can do for your pet beyond vaccinations'. Dental disease, as it turns out, is not limited to just the mouth. Upon the disease progressing to one of the four grades of periodontal disease, the bacteria can now be found in the blood Claudette stream where it is Anderson filtered out by the liver and kidneys. When this process occurs the pet subsequently develops disease in either or both organs and thus shortening their lives. One long university study actually determined that you may add up to five years of life to any cat or dog just by keeping the mouths healthy. Please do not get us wrong, we didn't get our pets teeth cleaned 15-20 years ago either. This is relatively new research that is still in the process of being accepted by the general public. The next time your veterinarian recommends a dental procedure you now hopefully have enough information to make an appropriate decision for your pet. Scott McQueen Color change gems are special but this exotic and rare stone’s color changing characteristics are mesmerizing. Zultanite displays a wide range of hues from kiwi greens in sunlight to raspberry purplishpinks in candlelight. It is different from other color change gems such as Alexandrite because Zultanite’s color change is not limited to two basic colors. It can display greens, pinks, yellows, champagnes, and gingers in different light sources. Like all color change gemstones, the larger the Zultanite, the more visible the color change. Zultanite is very popular with savvy jewelry connoisseurs because of its natural sparkling beauty, color changing qualities, but also because of its exclusivity. It is so rare there is only one source in the world for it: a remote mountain area in Anatolia, Turkey. It was named by Murat Adgun in honor of the 36 sultans who ruled the Ottoman Empire in Anatolia in the late 13th century. Zultanite is a true Turkish delight.

For Advertising Call Tim (303)994-9683 Tidbits Information Tidbits® of Douglas County 7 APRIL BABIES (continued): Eight years later, he resigned as president of Buick and was one of the richest men in America. Bored with his early retirement, he signed on with WillysOverland, a company $50 million in debt, for a salary of $1 million a year, a staggering amount at that time. He left after two years, having reduced the debt to $18 million. It was then on to the Maxwell Motor Company, which became the Chrysler Corporation in 1925. He acquired Dodge Brothers, Inc. in 1928, as well as adding Plymouths and DeSotos to his production line. • Back in 1991, Rodney King became famous overnight as a victim of police brutality at the hands of the Los Angeles Police Department. He was pulled over for driving at speeds close to 120 mph on the freeway and up to 80 mph in a residential area. Officers delivered 56 baton blows and six kicks to the unarmed King. Four officers were acquitted of charges in the state courts, resulting in the 1992 Los Angeles riots, during which 53 people were killed and 2,383 injured. There were upwards of 7,000 fires and damages to 3,100 business, tallying $1 billion in financial losses. King later filed a civil suit, from which he was awarded $3.8 million. After years of struggling with alcoholism, King checked into the Pasadena Recovery Center and appeared on the reality show “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew,” followed by “Sober House.” In late 2010, he became engaged to one of the jurors from his civil suit. This April baby currently works with two non-profit organizations in Los Angeles. • Baby boomers will probably remember the eccentric ukulele-playing singer Tiny Tim. Born Herbert Khaury in April of 1932, he tried several stage names, such as Larry Love, Darry Dover and Judas K. Foxglove, before settling on the name of a Charles Dickens character. His big break came when he was booked on the television variety show “Laugh-In,” where he sang “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” in a high falsetto voice, a song that would become his trademark. At the height of his popularity in the 1960s, he earned $50,000 a week. He marked his 17-year-old girlfriend Victoria “Miss Vicki” Budinger on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show” in 1969; the union endured eight years and produced a daughter, appropriately named Tulip. OVERCOMING THE ODDS:
CARON BUTLER
The 6’7”, 228-pound Caron Butler has done a lot of living in his 30 years. He has traveled from juvenile delinquent to forward for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, and this week, Tidbits goes down the road to see what has made him such a success. • As a child in Racine, Wisconsin, Caron Butler lived with his single mom and a younger brother. His mother worked two jobs to make ends meet, and the adolescent Butler was earning money raking leaves, shoveling snow and working a newspaper route. However, with two drug-dealing uncles, he was lured into the world of hustling and made his first drug deal at age 11. By the time he was 15, he had already been arrested 15 times. • As a young teen, Butler heard Jameel Ghuari, the executive director of the local neighborhood center, give a “Say No to Drugs” speech at his junior high school. Ghuari was starting up an inner-city basketball league and travel team and had heard of Butler’s athletic ability. Before he could enlist him as a team member, Butler, at 14, had been sent to the Racine Correctional Institution. • Butler’s incarceration was the result of police finding cocaine and a pistol in this young freshman’s school locker. To this day, Butler maintains that he had given his locker combination to a friend, and to

There he remained for more than a year, surrounded by murderers, burglars and drug dealers. • Yet something good came from Butler’s time at the detention center. He discovered he loved the game of basketball. Upon his release, he joined up with Ghuari’s team and began competing in tournaments. • Butler’s rough road wasn’t over just yet. At 15, he became a young father, and went to work at the Racine Burger King, doing everything from janitorial tasks to cash register duties. • It was Ghuari who helped get Butler on the right road, arranging for a scholarship to a Maine college
preparatory school. From there it was on to the University of Connecticut, where he led the Huskies to NCAA championships. At age 22, he was drafted by NBA’s Miami Heat, for whom he played from 2002 to 2004, moving on to the L.A. Lakers. It was on the anniversary of his sentencing for the drug and weapons charges that Butler signed a five-year, $50 million contract with the Washington Wizards. He was an NBA All-Star for two of his seasons with the team, before transferring to the Dallas Mavericks in 2010. • Today, Butler owns six Burger King restaurants, maintaining that it was there that he learned responsibility and professionalism. He says it’s been “one of the best business decisions he’s made.” In addition, he reaches out to young people, speaking at detention centers, urging them to “walk a straight line, no matter what it takes.” He is also noted for his many charitable contributions.

Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Consider These "Tax-smart" Investment Moves
Cindy Rose
April 18 was the deadline for filing your individual tax return. But that wasn’t the only event that occurred this tax season. Although you might not have been aware of it, Tax Freedom Day fell on April 12.
Tax Freedom Day, calculated annually by the Tax Foundation, is the day on which Americans have earned enough money to pay this year’s federal, state and local taxes. Of course, Tax Freedom Day is something of a fiction, because most people pay their taxes throughout the year, via their paychecks. Furthermore, when you pay taxes, you help fund public education, the police, the fire department, highways, college scholarships and many other important elements of society. Nonetheless, you may want to use the concept of Tax Freedom Day to look for ways to reduce the taxes associated with your investments. Here are a few suggestions: Fully fund your IRA. For 2011, you generally can contribute up to $5,000 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. When you invest in a traditional IRA, your contributions may be tax deductible, depending on your income level, and your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. With a Roth IRA, your contributions are not deductible, but your earnings can grow tax free, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59-1/2. Increase your 401(k) contributions. When you contribute to a 401(k), you can receive two main types of tax benefits. First, you typically put in pre-tax dollars to your 401(k), so the more you contribute, the lower your taxable income. And second, your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. For 2011, you generally can contribute up to $16,500 to your 401(k), or $22,000 if you’re 50 or over. (The same contribution limits apply to 457(b) plans, for state or local government employees, or 403(b) plans, for employees of schools or other tax-exempt organizations.) So, whenever your salary goes up, you many want to consider boosting your contributions to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Invest in a 529 plan. If you have children or grandchildren whom you’d like to help through college, you may want to invest in a 529 plan. Your earnings grow tax-free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses, and your contributions may be deductible from your state taxes, depending on your state of residence and the plan in which you choose to participate. Be a “buy-and-hold” investor. By holding investments at least one year before selling them, gains on your investment will generally be taxed at a rate of 15 percent. If you sell an appreciated investment you’ve held less than one year, the tax rate will be the same as your individual tax rate, which could be as high as 35 percent. Look for dividends. You can potentially increase your cash flow by purchasing investments that pay dividends. For 2011 and 2012, individual investors also benefit from a maximum tax rate of 15 percent on qualified dividends. If you don’t need the extra cash, you can reinvest the dividends and increase your ownership shares — which is a key to building wealth. (Keep in mind, though, that companies can decrease or eliminate dividends at any time.) As mentioned above, Tax Freedom Day is more of an idea than a reality. But by following these tax-smart investment tips, you can potentially gain some benefits for years to come.

Resurrection Day vs. Easter:
Sunday Services 9:00 am & 5:00 pm
Which is correct? On Sunday April 24, 2011 the Christian world celebrated THE most significant event in human history, the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. As Paul said, in 1 Corinthians 15:13-14 “But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: 14And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.” But glory to God, we know that this is not the case. In fact Paul goes on to say, 1 Corinthians 15:20 “But now is Christ risen from the dead…, Praise God! For everyone that believes, that means you are now translated out of the kingdom of darkness and into the kingdom of light and life! And our time here on this earth is no more than the training ground for our future as we are destined to rule and reign with Him in the not too distant future! But this day is not without controversy between those that say that the word and celebration of Easter is a pagan holiday and therefore should not be referred to in those terms. While others say that regardless of its origin, Easter now represents a Christian holiday and we should not have to make apologies for using that term. So which side is correct? Well, from my studies and from what I have read there is evidence for both sides of the argument. And if we would let him, the enemy would like to take this thing and use it as a source of contention and as a source of division. To get our eyes off what really matters and focused on items that reduce our effectiveness in bringing others to salvation. So what I would say to you is simply this, let’s not argue about what is and what is not, especially when we have no definitive Biblical directive, but let’s focus on the real meaning and significance of this day, the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jesus went to hell for us so we would not have to, He led captivity captive, and He now sits on the right hand of the Father, ever making intercession for you and for me. That means anytime the enemy comes in and tries to accuse you of something, tries to show you that you are not worthy, that you are not righteous, you have a lawyer, an advocate, standing before the Father declaring that you are NOT guilty! Praise God saints, it does not get any better than that! Jesus said in the gospel of John, John 10:10 (King James Version) The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Resurrection Sunday, Easter Sunday represents that abundant life that we now can have, simply by receiving Christ into our hearts and making Him, Lord and Savior of our lives. Have you done that yet? If not, what are you waiting for, Jesus has paid the price for sin and He has risen from the dead so we do not have to die. Happy Easter and Happy Resurrection Day!
