• Callaway Gardens opened to the public in 1952. There are two areas that are bursting with azaleas. The original “Overlook Azalea Garden,” planted under the guidance of the founders, Cason and Virginia Callaway, has more than 700 varieties of cultivated azaleas that were planted many years ago. What a terrible fate for a sweet senior cat! At Cast Specialist, we just can’t let something like that happen, so we asked the family to give her to us so that we could find her a new home, and they agreed. Columbine is 18 years young, and needs to have more quality years! Columbine looks like an active 14 year old and is very sweet. The search is on for a mature owner that needs a nice cat to love! Pruning Tips Q: I haven’t pruned many of my hedges and trees in several years, and some of them have grown wild and ragged-looking. If they’re past the blooming stage, is it safe to trim them? Also, any tips to make this task easier? -- Carol in Oklahoma A: Trying to tackle all of the shrubbery and trees in your yard can be daunting, even when it hasn’t been several years since their last pruning. The best thing to do is take an initial tour of your yard with notebook in hand. Mentally split the yard into several sections, and then note what needs to be done in each: trimming, pruning or even removal of foliage. Next, tackle each section one at a time. Depending on your schedule, you may need to do one section each day. A particularly foliage-heavy section may take an entire weekend. You might need help from friends or relatives to take care of large or excessively high hedges, meaning you’ll need to plan a time for them to come over. And if a tree needs complex trimming -- for example, its branches are encroaching on the roof or on power lines -- you’ll need to arrange for a professional tree trimmer to inspect it, provide an estimate and do the work. Pruning on your own takes a little practice, but don’t worry too much about mistakes, as they will eventually grow out. Plants that have already bloomed can be pruned without a problem, and plants or trees that are still blooming are, by this time of year, safe to trim. As you’ll likely be piling up a lot of branches and limbs, check with your local government about proper disposal of yard waste. Most have programs in place, such as scheduled pickup dates during the growing season, and guidelines for containers or bags that the trimmed branches should be placed in. If you hire a tree trimmer, be sure to ask how branches will be disposed of, and if that cost is included in the estimate. To live up to its tagline, “Where flowers meet the sea,” five varieties of native azaleas are cared for in Azalea Park, considered the “crown jewel” of Brookings City Parks. • Another flower that blooms brightly and keeps Brookings, Oregon, “on the map” with flower lovers is the Easter lily. The flower is native to Japan, but Louis Houghton, a World War I soldier, is credited with bringing bulbs of this flower to the United States. By 1945, there were about 1,200 growers on the Pacific coast from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Long Beach, California. Today almost all of the bulbs for the potted Easter lily market are grown by 10 farms in a small coastal area along the California-Oregon border. Appropriately, this region is called the Easter Lily Capital of the World. • According to the National Geographic book, “The 10 Best of Everything,” the best garden in the world is at the Château De Versailles in Versailles, France. The garden was the desire of King Louis XIV and was designed by French landscape designer, André Le Nôtre in the 17th century. by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S. Q. What can I do about my sensitive teeth? A. Tooth hypersensitivity may respond to a desensitizing toothpaste. Last week I mentioned avoiding Tarter Control Toothpaste, which can cause sensitivity with prolonged use. In addition, avoid frequent use of soft drinks, which typically have high sugar and high acid contents. Citrus juices and many sports drinks are highly acidic. What does a desensitizing toothpaste do? A desensitizing agent in the tooth-paste works to close open microscopic pores on the surface of the tooth and block the fluid movement within the small tubes in the dentin that triggers pain inside the tooth.

Be patient. It may take a month or so for significant

improvement. Don’t “over do it”, since long-term use of a desensitizing toothpaste can actually aggravate sensitivty. Q. Does the type toothbrush I use matter? A.

But today, workers can expect to hold several different jobs in their lifetime, and to a great extent, pensions have been replaced by 401(k) plans, which place much of the funding responsibility on employees. So, assuming you will change jobs at some point, and you do have a 401(k), what should you do with it?

Here are your basic choices: Cash out your plan. If you cash out your plan, your company will likely pay you 80% of your account value, withholding the rest for federal taxes. And if you’re younger than age 59½, you may well be slapped with a 10% IRS tax penalty. Even worse, you’ll have lost a key source of your retirement income. Still, if you are leaving your employer involuntarily, and you need the money, cashing out your 401(k) is an option you may need to consider. Keep the money in your company’s plan. When you leave a company, your employer may allow you to keep your money in your existing 401(k). You may want to choose this route if you like the investment choices available in your plan. However, you might be caught by surprise if the company decides to change investment options. Furthermore, some employers may charge former employees fees to maintain their 401(k) plans. Move the money into your new employer’s plan. If your new employer has a 401(k) and allows transfers, you could roll the money from your old plan into the new one. This might be an attractive option if you like the investment options in your new employer’s plan. Roll the money over to an IRA. You may find several advantages to rolling your 401(k) over to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). First, your money will still have the potential to grow on a tax-deferred basis. Second, you can invest your funds in virtually any investment you choose — stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs), etc. Third, if you own more than one 401(k) account, you could find it advantageous to consolidate them into a single IRA, thereby making it easier to allocate and monitor your retirement assets. And fourth, IRAs may give you greater flexibility if you plan to pass money to your children. In fact, if your child inherits your IRA, he or she has the option of stretching withdrawals over the child’s entire lifetime, rather than taking the money as a lump sum. (If you do transfer funds from your old 401(k) to an IRA, be sure to use a “direct rollover” to avoid the possibility of triggering unwanted taxes.) Before making any moves with your 401(k), consult with your tax and financial advisors. By looking closely at your options, and by getting professional guidance, you can make the choice that’s right for you. On May 19, 1715, the colony of New York passes a law making it illegal to “gather, rake, take up, or bring to the market, any oysters whatsoever” during May, June, July and August. This regulation was only one of many that were passed in the early days of America to help preserve certain species. On May 17, 1792, a group of 24 traders gather under a buttonwood tree at 68 Wall Street in lower Manhattan to work out the regulations of the speculative market. The result was the Buttonwood Agreement, a two-sentence contract that gave birth to the New York Stock Exchange. On May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss secures the necessary patents for canvas pants with copper rivets to reinforce the stress points. Unable to sell a large supply of canvas in the California mining camps, Strauss had hit on the idea of using the durable material to make work pants for miners. On May 18, 1917, six weeks after the United states formally enters the First World War, the U.S. Congress passes the Selective Service Act, giving the president the power to draft soldiers. By the end of World War I in November 1918, some 24 million men had registered.
