• The moon at night shining in the dark is not actually a light source since it does not produce its own light. The moon is visible because of the sun’s light that bounces off of it back to earth. When we see different phases (or sizes) of the moon it is because the earth revolves around the sun and the moon orbits the earth. The part of the moon that is reflecting depends on the angles or relative positions of the earth, moon and sun. • The earth’s orbit also changes our view of the stars at night even though the stars are in fixed patterns. Astronomers who named many of the stars and constellations (named patterns of stars) years ago gave them Greek and Roman names that are still used today. • The most well-known constellations are the “Big Dipper” and “Little Dipper.” The “dippers” are part of Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, which mean Greater Bear and Smaller Bear.

• Many children the world over hear a song about the night sky long before they learn to talk. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star was published by Jane Taylor and her sister, Ann, in England in 1806. Their second book of children’s poems, Rhymes for the Nursery, includes the poem, The Star, written with five verses. Only the first verse is widely sung, with an occasional addition of verse two. • The tune for Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star is actually older than the poem. It originated in France, first seen in print in Paris in 1761. The tune was first associated with a French song, Ah! Vous diraije, Maman, which is translated Ah! Will I tell you Mommy. It is still popular with French children. • Another “tune” that came from Paris was the quiet buzz of neon lights. Georges Claude, a chemist, engineer, and inventor was a pioneer in the development of neon lighting. • Neon gas was first discovered in 1898. The word neon was chosen for the gas from the Greek word “neos” which means “new gas.” • Two predecessors to neon lights were the Geissler Moore tubes that used pressurized gas in tubes with electric volts to make colorful lights. When neon was discovered it proved to be a more lasting gas for tube lights. Neon was in short supply until Georges Claude’s company, “Air Liquide,” began producing large quantities. Claude made his first neon light in 1902 and first displayed his invention at the Paris Motor Show in December, 1910, with two 39 foot long (12 m) bright red tubes of neon light.

• Claude received his first patent for neon lighting in Paris in 1911 and another in the United States in 1915. • (There is some historical evidence that Perley G. Nutting, a physicist who started the Optical Society of America, displayed the first neon light at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904.) • The first commercial neon sign was sold to a barber shop in Paris in 1912, by Jaques Fonseque, an associate of Claude.

May 31, 2013

• When red and blue tubes of neon lights were installed decorating the Paris Opera House in 1919, the colors became known as “Opera Colors.” • Claude sold the first neon sign in America, actually two, to a Packard Car dealership in Los Angeles in 1923. The price: $24,000! Neon quickly caught on in the advertising world.

May 31, 2013

• The “liquid fire” signs began dominating outdoor advertising displays in American cities from Times Square in New York to Los Angeles. Las Vegas quickly became a city filled with neon on the borders of signs and buildings, architectural accents Continued on page 8

Do You Take Vitamins? Why? I have asked many friends, colleagues, and clients if they take vitamins and why? Most people have told me that do and for many good reasons. Vitamins and supplements appear to correct deficiencies in the body and enhance people’s well being. Next I began to look over feline diets and most diets were labeled balanced and complete for all life stages. The ingredients varied but most had a large percentage of carbohydrates as a food source. Cats in the wild eat very little carbohydrates – cats are meat eaters. The metabolism of felines differs dramatically from canines – cats are true carnivores and dogs are omnivores like humans.

In clinical medicine we see many ‘mild’ deficiency syndromes improve when diets are changed or supplements are added. It is apparent that most diets other than mice and birds are deficient in many ways. Reviewing thousands of cat’s body scores and their diets we found most had some deficiencies. The old adage – “You are what you eat.” is more true for cats than for humans. There are many ‘new’ feline diseases that have come to the forefront in the last 30 years that appear to have some dietary basis: diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, urinary tract disease, cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, etc.. Deficiency diseases are becoming one of the biggest areas of research.

So, the bottom line with virtually all feline diets . . . they need to be supplemented with quality vitamins, minerals, and other essential fatty acids and proteins. The problem with most vitamin and supplement products is that they are not well formulated for cats and the quality is subpar. We have researched and searched for quality products and there appear to be only 3 to 4 out of thousands that meet balanced nutritional standards. Feeding quality supplements really does help your cat versus feeding ‘empty’ treats loaded with calories. Ask your veterinarian which supplements to add to your cat’s nutrition. Dr. James K. Scott McQueen Emeralds, aquamarines, and the charming pink of morganite have left gemstone-lovers spellbound for years. They are famous for their variety of color, sparkling brilliance, and suitability for jewelry. What many don’t realize is that they belong to a single family - they are all beryls. The rare red beryl, the golden beryl, the yellowish-green heliodor, the pink, or the colorless goshenite beryl are all different but have similar chemical and physical properties, making them related. Beryl is found in the gemstone deposits of South America and those of Central and West Africa. However, they also occur on Madagascar, in Russia and the Ukraine, and in Goshen, Massachusetts where goshenite berly is mined. The skilled hands of gemstone cutters turn them into a multitude of many-faceted shapes. In particular, beryls are well suited to rectangular or square step cuts, since it takes a clear design to bring out to the full the transparent beauty of this colorful gemstone family. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. Q: The house I just bought has a wooden deck in the back that has turned gray over the years. It’s otherwise structurally sound. My question is, should I seal the deck against further water damage, or just stain it to the color I want and not worry about sealing it? -- Judy H., Waycross, Ga. A: It’s really up to you. Just staining the deck will give you the color you want, although in high-traffic areas the stain could wear away quickly. Many deck companies recommend using a combination stain/sealer product, which is basically a sealer with pigment added. The advantage of this, they say, is the sealer provides additional protection against water and weather damage, while the stain helps reduce fading from UV rays. Sealers should last at least a year, with some lasting up to three years. You have a choice of either water-based or oil-based sealer; many professionals recommend oil-based products, which last longer. Since you’ve just purchased the house and might not know when the deck was last maintained, consider having a professional deck contractor inspect it. Find out if there are any hidden issues, whether the deck needs maintenance prior to staining or sealing it. The deck will likely need to be cleaned and may need to be sanded and pressure-washed prior to sealing or staining. Once you’ve inspected and cleaned the deck, you can apply a stain or sealer (or both). If you decide to stain, pick a few sample colors that are a few shades darker or lighter than the shade you want. This is because different types or different conditions of deck wood can cause the color of the stain to appear different from the swatch color. Test each sample in an inconspicuous place and pick the best color for your wood. Apply the stain or sealer on a dry day when the temperature is above 50 degrees F. Don’t apply it in direct sunlight. Ideally, two dry days will help the stain or sealer dry completely and evenly, so check the weather forecast and plan accordingly. Stir the sealer (don’t shake it -- bubbles will form in it) or stain and apply a thin coat to a couple of boards at a time using a long-handled paint roller. Don’t overapply -- the finish will not dry correctly and will feel tacky for days, at least. If the finish puddles up, use another roller or a broom to spread out the puddles. To stain or seal corners, use a paintbrush. If you feel a second coat is needed, apply it in the same way, very thinly. Let the finish dry for at least 24 hours. A note about cleanup: Any rags or cloths used to clean up spills or excess should not be piled up together. The evaporating finish can ignite and cause a fire. Wash rags by hand -- if you applied a water-based finish, use soapy water; if you applied an oil-based finish, use mineral spirits or paint thinner, then rinse -- and hang them outdoors to dry, spaced well apart. HOME TIP: Every few months, check to make sure your deck is still sealed by pouring a small amount of water on the wood. If it beads up, the deck is fine. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. My new e-book, “101 Best Home Tips,” is available to download on Amazon Kindle! Pick it up it today for just 99 cents. Decks Time to Repair or Replace With summer & BBQ’s coming up we all want to get out & enjoy our decks. As always the bane of us enjoying our yards in the summer is the yard work that comes with it. Our decks are no different – wooden structures are especially susceptible to deterioration weakening over time due to age & weather. Every summer your deck should be inspected for loose planks, railings & stairs, these are the most common issues that cause injury. All which can easily be avoided by a simple inspection. Many simply need sealed & maybe put a few screws into a decking plank that has become loose, while others have aged to the point where they are no longer safe. The difference between needing some TLC & a demolition crew can be hard to discern. If you have this question, do yourself a favor & call a professional contractor for an evaluation & estimate. Most contractors will not charge for this service & a little investment of your time is worth the peace of mind. At QCI Structural Solutions we pride ourselves on delivering the best product & experience possible to our clients & would be more than happy to help you with all of your construction & home refurbish needs whether it be a deck, kitchen, bathroom, new windows & doors, siding, painting or even a man-cave. NIGHT LIGHTS (continued): and even neon animations. • Today, many of the first neon signs and displays in Las Vegas have become part of the Neon Museum. The Museum has three components: the Downtown Gallery, the Neon Boneyard, and the Las Vegas Signs project. • By the way, Georges Claude was imprisoned from 1945-1949 by the French government for collaborating with the Germans in World War II. • Claude’s patents were good but they did not stop others from “taking off” from his work. Charles J. Wamser created his sign company with neon technology that was slightly different from Claude’s patents. • Wamser’s company, Sheet Metal Products, Inc., was started in a rented garage in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and started mass producing signs in the late 1920s. His company, now named Everbrite, is still a worldwide leader in the lighting and branding of companies. • Many of the “neon” signs that dotted the landscapes in North America were not all neon. People use the name “neon” for lights of all colors but actually neon lights are red. Other gases used with neon produce different colors. Argon is most widely used, along with mercury and phosphor. There are now over 150 colors that can be produced. • Neon signs were most popular in the 1950s. By the 1960s neon lights were being replaced with cheaper lighting. • As in fashion, many things of old come back to be popular again. In 1999, the Route 66 Corridor Restoration Act, helped to put neon signs of old back in the public eye. Many of the monuments to the past, including the neon signs that dotted Route 66 were restored and reinstalled.

Before opening the Brewery, Tom was working for Douglas County. When asked why he decided to make the switch he responded, “I wanted a job I love to do.” Tom enjoys the business of making beer very much. He has been brewing for over twenty years and has taken home two gold medals in national competitions. The name Elk Mountain comes from the mountain he has had luck hunting on and many of the elk horns adorning the brewery are a testament to his luck. The brewery features eight varieties of handcrafted beers made on site. Including Ghost Town Brown, Summer Blonde, Puma IPA and Oatmeal Stout just to name a few. Summer isn’t here yet, but it’s getting close. And for many people, the arrival of summer means it’s time for swimming at the local pool or lake. If you’re just a casual swimmer, you probably don’t have to adjust your diet before jumping in. But that’s not the case with competitive swimmers, who must constantly watch what they eat and drink, particularly in the days and hours preceding their races. While you may not ever have to concern yourself with your 400-meter individual medley “splits,” you can learn a lot from swimmers’ consumption patterns — particularly if you’re an investor. For starters, to sustain energy and stamina for a relatively long period of time, competitive swimmers need to eat easy-to-digest carbohydrates such as whole wheat, whole grains, apples and bananas. When you invest, you want to build a portfolio that is capable of “going the distance.” Consequently, you need investments that provide carbohydrate-type benefits — in other words, investments with the potential to fuel a long-term investment strategy. Such a strategy usually involves owning a mix of high-quality stocks, bonds, government securities and certificates of deposit (CDs). By owning these vehicles, in proportions appropriate for your risk tolerance and time horizon, you can help yourself make progress toward your financial goals — and lessen the risk of running out of energy “mid-stream.”

Cindy Rose

Of course, competitive swimmers have to be diligent not just in what they do eat but also in what they don’t. That’s why they avoid sweets, such as sodas and desserts, when it’s close to race time. These items do not provide lasting energy — in fact, they actually sap energy once the sugar wears off. As an investor, you, too, need to avoid the temptation of “sweets” in the form of high-yield or “hot” investment vehicles. You may find some of these investments to be alluring, but you will need to carefully weigh the extra risks involved. For many people, these types of investments may not provide the long-term stability needed to help maintain a healthy, productive investment portfolio.

While what swimmers eat, or don’t eat, is important to them, their drinking habits are also crucial. The competitive environment — warm pool water, warm air temperatures and high humidity — can quickly lead to dehydration, so swimmers need to drink sizable amounts of water and sports drinks before and during practice. And you, as an investor, need your own type of liquidity, for at least two reasons. First, you need enough cash or cash equivalents to take advantage of new investment opportunities as they arise; without the ability to add new investments, your portfolio could start to “dehydrate.” Second, you need enough liquid investments — specifically, low-risk vehicles that offer preservation of principal — to create an emergency fund, ideally containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses. Without such a fund, you may be forced to dip into long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a major car repair, a new furnace or a large bill from the dentist. So the next time you see competitive swimmers churning through their lanes, give a thought as to the type of diet that is helping propel them along — and think of the similarities to the type of “fueling” you’ll need to keep your investment strategy moving forward. Debt Collection Basics for the Small Business Part Two: Navigating the Legal Maze of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) was enacted to protect consumers from harassment by debt collectors. The FDCPA applies only to consumer debts. A consumer debt is any obligation to pay money for a transaction that was primarily for personal, family, or household purposes. Business debts are not covered under the law. The FDCPA also does not apply to original creditors or lenders collecting their own debts. There is an exception. If an original creditor uses an assumed name or pretends to be a debt collector to collect their own debt, they have to comply with the FDCPA. The FDCPA contains some fairly complicated rules governing collection of consumer debt. A debt collector cannot threaten to take any action that is illegal or which the collector does not actually intend to take. A debt collector cannot attempt to collect any amount not authorized by agreement or not otherwise allowed under the law. The FDCPA also limits communications that a debt collector may have regarding the debt. This article is a brief overview of the provisions of the FDCPA. The law is complex and there may be specific sections that apply to your business. Please consult with your attorney before attempting to contact customers for collection purposes. For more information about the FDCPA please attend our free collections seminar on April 24, 2013 at 5:30 pm. Seating is limited so please RSVP to rsvp@fourthstreetlaw.com. Debt collection is an important aspect of business law. Businesses that are not paid for their products or services are not in business for very long. That’s why it’s important to have a legal resource for persuading customers to pay their bills. At Fourth Street Law, LLC, we provide these services to many types of businesses. Whatever business you are in, we welcome your inquiries about collecting what is due to you. How can we help? For more information, please call (303) 388-2787 or e-mail Stephen@ fourthstreetlaw.com. Bankruptcy

Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool , Ralph suddenly Jumped into the deep end.

(303) 525-9531 www.coloradobklawyer.com email: nomoredebt@qwest.net

He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there. Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam ...to the bottom and pulled him out. When the Nursing Director became aware of Edna's heroic act, she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally stable. When she went to tell Edna the news, she said, 'Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged, since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of the person you love... I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness. The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but he's dead.' Edna replied, 'He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry.. How soon can I go home??'
