IRRIGATION by Patricia L. Cook

Flying over land, whether foreign or domestic, is quite an adventure. Observing the checkerboard designs, circles, curves, lines and the greens, browns, blues and other color variations from above tells a lot about the land and water below. Irrigation causes many of the variations. • Irrigation is defined as “artificial application of water to land to assist in the production of crops.” Some of the oldest civilizations on earth relied on irrigation to keep their populations alive.

• Flooding occurs along the Nile River in Egypt and the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in Mesopotamia annually from July through December. Early farmers learned to divert the water to fields for 40-60 days and then drain it back into the river at just the right time in the growing season. Turn the page for more!

• In many climates there is sufficient rainfall to grow crops, however in dry climates farmers must work out a way to get needed water to their fields. Irrigation has been a significant technology underlying the major developments of the world. Early uses of irrigation can be traced back to 6000 BC in Egypt and Mesopotamia (present day Iraq and Iran).

IRRIGATION (continued): • A Nilometer was most likely the first device used for measuring a river’s rise and fall. It consisted of a water chamber with a graduated pillar to measure the depth of the river’s water and predict when floods would occur. One of the oldest structures in Cairo, Egypt is a unique historical Nilometer on Roda (Rawda) Island. While it has been rebuilt and restored numerous times, the basics of the structure date back to 715 AD. • Many Nilometers were used in ancient times along the Nile and several others have also been preserved but the Roda Island building is one of the most picturesque. The use of Nilometers subsided when the first major irrigation project was undertaken around 3100 BC. This project included dams and canals to make the water accessible to the people. • Other old methods of getting water where it was needed were used as well. An irrigation shaduf is a device used by early Egyptians. It was a container made of clay or animal skins that was attached to a lever and counterbalanced by stones. The container was dipped into the river and then usually dumped into a canal that flowed to where it could be used. • Egyptians also used water wheels with clay pots or buckets (called Noria) attached along the circumference. The river’s current turned the wheel. As the buckets or pots were filled they turned around the wheel until they were emptied by gravity into an aqueduct that took the water where it needed to go. • Noria were the first non-human operated lifting devices. While Egyptians developed Noria water wheels there is a lot of historical evidence that the Chinese were using similar methods to move water in their country as well. • There were other ancient devices that were used to help get water where it was needed for consumption as well as irrigation for crops. Windmills and canals played a great part in the early years. Canals and dams on rivers are the most important “big” introductions to irrigation from the ancient days that are still used today. • In the year 1800 AD there were 19.76 million acres (7,996,588 ha) worldwide that were irrigated. Today that has risen to an estimated 600 million acres (242,811,385 ha). • Irrigation is mostly used in areas with annual rainfall of less than 20 inches (51 cm). • There are also regions that “overwater” using irrigation in order to grow crops that need lots of water. The two crops that use the most water are cotton and rice; two of the most essential crops for many lesser developed countries. In southern China, over 70% of the acres (hectares) being cultivated are for rice. Continued on page 7

The success of veterinary medicine in the last 50 years has doubled the life span of cats. A better quality of life, reduction in disease and the ability to treat chronic disease all have improved the health of felines. The four most important reasons for this improvement are: 1. Vaccinations -- decreasing or almost eliminating feline distemper, feline upper respiratory disease, feline leukemia and rabies which caused a mortality of 30% a year. 2. Eliminating Internal and External Parasites – effective deworming and external parasite control have saved many lives. 3. Indoor Life Style – indoor living is safer than the outdoor life style. 4. Better Nutrition – feline nutritional advances have helped cats live longer and healthier.

ALMAR FARMS 303-805-9469

The number one progressive disease is obesity and it has a fix – a balanced reducing diet. In the last 4 years, a study showed that 90% of cats were obese. Our feeding practice of “free feeding” dry diets causes fat cats. That means adding pounds which will stress the heart, kidneys and liver, decrease mobility and make your cat less social. Then add on arthritis and there is increased pain on moving around. Add on high blood pressure and your cat may lose his sight, his kidneys will be stressed and the heart’s output is decreased. Add on diabetes and your cat’s life expectancy maybe only 3 more years. The number two progressive disease is dental disease and it has a fix – dental prophies when needed (every 6-12 months is routine for many cats). Dental disease is painful and most cats won’t let you know until many teeth cannot be saved. The number three progressive disease is boredom/inactivity and it has a quick fix – start playing with your cat. Great cat toys and cat games exist that most cats love. Work on the top three chronic diseases that have a solution and your cat will be healthier. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. Emerald

Scott McQueen

Emeralds are famous for their intense, radiant green color that many believe conveys harmony, love of nature, and the joy of life itself. Innumerable stories are told about this magnificent gem. The Incas and Aztecs of South America long regarded the emerald as a holy gemstone. The Vedas, the holy scriptures of India, say that emeralds promise good luck and enhance well-being. The pharaohs of Egypt exploited mines near the Red Sea in Egypt between 3000 and 2500 BC. The “Cleopatra Mines” of Egypt are now of historical interest only. The emeralds from Zimbabwe are among the oldest gemstones anywhere in the world where they were already growing 2600 million years ago. Today emeralds are mined in Colombia, Brazil, South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, India, Pakistan, Australia, and in the US. Many famous emeralds can be seen in museums and collections. The New York Museum of Natural History exhibits a cup made of pure emerald which belonged to the Emperor Jehangir of the Mughal Empire (Indian subcontinent) in the 1700s. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. Q: I heard somewhere that I can deduct my homeimprovement costs from my taxes. Is this true? -- Overtaxed in Wisconsin A: The cost of certain home improvements can be deducted on your tax returns, but not all of them. And the rules for such deductions can change, so the deduction you are eligible for one year may not be available the next. Some of the more compelling deductions are energy tax credits. For example, if you install solar panels or a solar water heater, geothermal heat pumps, a small wind turbine or fuel cells in your existing or new home, you may be able to get a one-time, 30 percent tax credit on the cost of such systems (including labor and installation costs). If you install energy-efficient windows and doors, you may be able to take a one-time credit of 10 percent. Installing new insulation or putting on a new roof also can qualify you for the credit, if the materials meet specific energy-efficiency guidelines. These are detailed by the Internal Revenue Service, and you can visit its website or talk with a tax preparer to learn more. If you make home improvements for medical reasons -- such as installing wheelchair ramps and handrails, lowering cabinets, etc. -- you may be able to deduct those improvements as medical expenses. Be careful about what you claim, however. “(M)aking a residence wheelchair accessible qualifies, but adding a sculpture garden does not,” says a TurboTax guide. Other deductions may be available, but read the tax guidelines carefully and fill out forms properly. Tax software or a professional tax preparer can help you figure out which credits or deductions you can take. HOME TIP: Interested in installing an energy-efficient system such as solar panels? Get an installation estimate from a certified, licensed installer and ask about tax credits. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. My new e-book, “101 Best Home Tips,” is available to download on Amazon Kindle! Pick it up it today for just 99 cents.

IRRIGATION (continued): • In the arid western U.S., where dry weather is persistent, water rights and water regulations are big issues for landowners and anyone involved in growing crops. The first water regulations date back to King Hammurabi of Babylon in 1792 BC. The regulations then and now include: 1) distribution of water proportional to acres (or hectares) farmed; 2) the farmer’s responsibilities in maintaining canals that cut through his property; and 3) the administrative responsibility of the canal for all users in its path.

7

April 30, 2013

• Many patents related to sprinklers for residential watering were issued starting in the late 1800s. As more homeowners, farmers and ranchers moved west and the need for irrigation of lawns, gardens and fields grew, more needs were seen and more inventors got busy. April 30, 2013

• Most sprinkling and irrigation is used for agriculture. In fact, 70% of all water use is for agriculture; land with irrigation grows 40% of the world’s food. • Aquifers are the main source for water for irrigation in North America. An aquifer is “an underground bed or layer of permeable rock, sediment or soil that yields water.” The High Plains aquifer is one of the largest aquifers in the world. It is under approximately 175,000 square miles (453248 km²) of eight states: Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. The area, considered the High Plains region, uses this important resource for irrigation and supplies about onefourth of the agricultural production for the nation. • A recent discovery (2012) in Namibia, the driest country in Africa, may prove to be the most significant discovery in that country’s history. The Ohangwena II aquifer flows under the boundary Namibia shares with Angola. The aquifer’s area under Namibia covers approximately 43 miles by 25 miles (70 km x 40 km). If the water from the aquifer is managed properly, the country should see a huge increase in sustainable agriculture to help the residents survive. Researchers from Germany and other European countries are helping to set up proper well usage for the locals. • When you hear the “click, click, click” or the swishing noises of modern center pivot irrigation systems or see the canals opened and fields “flood irrigated,” be thankful that people have studied and invented these items to have sufficient food to eat and crops that help to provide us with many other products we use daily. REASONS TO HAVE A BUYER'S AGENT WHEN BUYING A HOME 1) Representation - The buyer needs an advocate, someone to represent and protect the buyer's interest and someone who has a fiduciary duty to act in the best interest of the buyer.

SunMarke Professional Building Small Individual Office & Executive Suites

2) Documents and Disclosures - Submitting an offer which may become a legally binding contract, understanding the issues of disclosures and working with the inspector, appraiser and title company is not a process a buyer wants to do alone. 3) Avoid Lawsuits - Some of the most common causes of lawsuits in real estate are fraud, failure to disclose material facts, breach of contract, quiet title, etc. Working with a buyer's agent who understands the process can help avoid lawsuits.

Ask the Dentist Q: Does Gum Disease Cause Heart Attacks? A: Yes…….and strokes, low birth weight babies. Recent research proves a definite link between gum disease, heart disease, stroke, and pre-term low birth weight babies. Good oral health is more than just having an attractive smile; it can have a definite relationship to your overall health, lifestyle, and longevity. The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) reports that more than 90 percent of all systemic diseases can be manifest in abnormal oral health. Q: How do I know if I have Gum Disease? A: Warning signs of gum disease include: • Stinky breath • Puffy, red, sore gums that may bleed when brushing or flossing • Loose teeth • Changes in the way the bite fits or feels • Receding gums exposing the root surfaces Q: Is gum disease contagious? A: Yes! The bad bugs (“bacteria”) that cause gum disease are readily passed from one person to another. (Be sure to “think before you kiss”!) Gum disease (Periodontal Disease) is an infection in the gums and bone supporting the teeth, caused by specific bacteria. These bacteria organize into a sticky, creamy, stinky substance (paque) that sticks tenaciously around the teeth and gums. Gum disease can advance for years without detection or pain. Damage to the supporting bone is irreversible. The best cure is prevention before it happens or stopping gum disease in its tracks before major damage and tooth loss occur, and before you pass it to your “significant other”. See your dentist and dental hygienist and be sure to ask those important questions above – or call our office for a FREE Periodontal check-up and exam. Life is full of ups and downs — and the financial markets are no different. As an investor, you’re no doubt happy to see the “ups” — but the “downs” can seem like a real downer. Isn’t there any way to help smooth out the volatility in your investment portfolio? First of all, to cope with volatility, it’s helpful to know what causes it — and there can be many causes. Computers that make trades in milliseconds, based on mathematical models, are sometimes blamed for intraday volatility, but large price swings can also occur following the release of government economic reports, such as those dealing with unemployment and housing starts. Global events, such as the European economic malaise, can also send the financial markets into a tizzy.

By being aware of the impact of these events, you can see that the workings of the markets — especially their volatility — may not be as mysterious as you thought. Still, while knowing the causes of volatility can help you prepare for market swings, it won’t blunt their impact on your portfolio. To do that, you need to create a diversified mix of investments because your portfolio can be more susceptible to negative price movements if you only own one type of asset. To illustrate: If you owned mostly bonds, and interest rates rose sharply, the value of your bonds would likely drop, and your portfolio could take a big hit. But if you owned stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other investment vehicles, the rise in interest rates would probably affect your portfolio less significantly. Unfortunately, many investors think that if they own a few stocks and a bond, they’re diversified. But you can actually extend your diversification through many levels — and you should. For the equity portion of your portfolio, try to own stocks representing many market sectors and industries. Also, consider international stocks. And rather than just owning U.S. Treasury bonds, consider corporate bonds and municipal bonds, and diversify your fixed-income holdings further by purchasing short-term, intermediate-term and long-term bonds. Work with your financial advisor to determine the mix of asset classes and investments that are appropriate for your financial goals and objectives. How you ultimately diversify your portfolio depends on your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals — there’s no one “correct” asset mix for everyone. And over time, your diversification needs may change. To cite one example, as you enter your retirement years, you may need to increase your percentage of income-producing investments while possibly reducing the amount of growth investments you own. These growth-oriented investments tend to be more volatile, and you may want less volatility during your retirement. However, even during retirement, you will need to own a certain percentage of growth investments to provide you with the growth potential you’ll need to stay ahead of inflation. Keep in mind that diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Nonetheless, building a diversified portfolio may help take some of the volatility out of investing — so look for diversification opportunities whenever possible. Debt Collection Basics for the Small Business Part One: Getting Customers to Pay Every small business runs on cash, and cash comes in when you collect the money that is due. Finding ways to ensure prompt payment of the cash earned is an ongoing issue for businesses. For prompt payment, it is important to set up a solid process for managing your accounts receivable, billing, and collection. Monitoring accounts receivable is crucial to maintain consistent cash flow. Customers should know when and how they will receive a billing invoice. The best way to ensure collection of your accounts receivable is to contact the customer a few days after submitting an invoice. This is to be certain the invoice was received and find out when the bill will be paid. If you have exhausted all resources to collect from your customers, the next step might be to go to court. A reputable debt collection law firm can help collect your overdue accounts, leaving you to focus on developing other areas of your business. Start now to collect the money your customers owe you. Next week, Part Two: Navigating the Legal Maze of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Debt collection is an important aspect of business law. Businesses that are not paid for their products or services are not in business for very long. That’s why it’s important to have a legal resource for persuading customers to pay their bills. At Fourth Street Law, LLC, we provide these services to many types of businesses. Whatever business you are in, we welcome your inquiries about collecting what is due to you. How can we help?
