“We’ve got you covered”

by Kathy Wolfe

• Renowned Austrian psychiatrist Alfred Adler was a pioneer in the area of birth order in the early 1900s, and was one of the first to present theories that family placement affects personality and how individuals deal with life’s issues. He believed that parents tend to treat children differently based on the order of birth. • Adler’s theory maintained that first-born children receive an abundance of attention, but only until the second child is born. When a new baby arrives, the firstborn may feel unloved, believing he or she has lost the mother’s love to the new baby. Adler called this being “dethroned,” and claimed it had a lasting effect on the individual. The loss of attention might cause the first child to become fearful, high-achieving, anxious, or competitive. He might have a need to retain praise from parents and become prone to perfectionism, making him vulnerable to stress. …turn the page for more

BIRTH ORDER (continued): • The accomplishments of the first-born, such as walking and talking, are monumental in the eyes of parents and the child is pushed to achieve at a faster pace. First-time parents worry if the child isn’t advancing as they expect and might pressure for success. Parents might push the child to carry out the dreams they had for themselves, and are often harder on first-borns. • Because first-borns often feel the need to be perfect in everything they do, they are usually well-organized, goal-oriented, and respectful of rules. First-borns tend to become people pleasers, ambitious, and aggressive.

• First-borns dominate the list of Nobel Prize winners, National Merit scholars, and astronauts. A few famous first-borns are Winston Churchill, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and Harry Truman.

• When a second child arrives, the first-born often becomes the “helper.” This results in a desire to protect and lead, and they become nurturers and caretakers.

720-254-8148

• The behavior of a middle child is often the result of the fact that they have never been “in the spotlight.” Their older sibling seems to be forging ahead with achievements while the younger one is the “entertainer” of the family, making the middleborn feel upstaged, left out, and insecure. The middle child often tries hard to be different from the older sibling. Because they sometimes feel ignored, they branch out on their own, becoming mentally tough and independent. They develop good social skills as a result, and often turn to their peer group rather than family for support. • Adler believed that middle children are more cooperative because they’ve grown up sharing attention. This also makes them more flexible and diplomatic, skills that allow them to thrive in business. The middles are also frequently good at peacemaking and negotiating – they’re good at seeing both sides of an issue! Fifty-two percent of U.S. presidents were middle children. • Because parents start to relax by the second child and become less demanding, middle children tend to have a more relaxed attitude toward life than their older sibling. Some famous middles include David Letterman, Richard Nixon, Madonna, and Princess Diana. • A recent study indicates that first-born children receive about 3,000 hours more time with parents between age 4 and 13 than their younger siblings. Perhaps this is why first-borns are more pressured to succeed, as parents “loosen up” as more children arrive. Parents also spend less time with each arriving child because they get more proficient at child-rearing tasks.

• The baby of the family is often more pampered than his older siblings. Adler believed this was one of the worst actions of a parent, leading to dependence, selfishness, and irresponsibility. He theorized that babied children easily become manipulative and temperamental. The youngest child often gets more attention because the older children have grown to different developmental stages and are somewhat independent. • The baby of the family is often the entertainer or the charmer and likes being in the limelight. He is more carefree and affectionate, and has a good sense of humor, but usually seems to be more rebellious than his older siblings. • The baby tends to be less responsible and more adventurous, taking part in risky activities and Continued on page 5

Heartworm disease has become a mainstream disease in Colorado’s dogs and cats. Dogs that have heartworm disease are the reservoir that mosquitoes bite for blood meal and then spread the disease to other dogs and cats. A new twist to the heartworm reservoir is the coyote. All coyotes to date have been tested positive with heartworm disease. So, heartworm disease is everywhere. Dogs can be accurately tested for the disease and treated effectively if they are diagnosed with it. Good preventive medications are available and when they are given every 30 days year round the disease is stopped. Cats are different. Heartworm disease in felines is a secondary host disease and difficult to diagnose. Testing if positive is a diagnosis of heartworm disease. If cats are tested negative they still can have the disease. There is no effective heartworm treatment in cats and up to 50% of infected cats die within 2 years. New treatment protocols are improving survival rates but cats still are at risk. Prevention of the disease is the only sure way to protect your cat.

Travel to Australia to find the worlds finest opals where 95% of them are found in the arid, remote outback deserts. The ancient Australian aborigine lore taught that the Creator came down to earth on a rainbow and the very spot where his foot touched the ground the stones started gleaming in all the colors of the rainbow and the opal was born. There are a variety of opals but all share one characteristic: they shine and sparkle in a constantly varying play of colors described by gemologists as “opalising”. This color play makes the opal attractive, fascinating and valuable. In 1960s a team of Australian scientists analyzed opals with an electron microscope and discovered that small spheres from silica gel causes interference and the refraction of light resulting in “opalising”. Pliny, the famous Roman author, called opal a gemstone which combines the best possible characteristics of the most beautiful of gemstones: the fine sparkle of Almandine, the shining purple of Amethyst, the golden yellow of Topaz, and the deep blue of Sapphire, ”so that all colors shine and sparkle together in a beautiful combination“.

• More families are opting to have only one child now than ever before. In 1970, 33% of families had only one child. That percentage is about 43% today. Perhaps part of the reason is the amount of money it requires to rear a child to his 18th birthday. That figure is close to $300,000, which does not include saving for college.

The American Sociological Association says that the more siblings you have, the better your chance of a long and happy marriage, since you’ve developed skills in conflict negotiation and personality clashes. They also tend to be very close to their parents.

Flowers The first step in creating a do-it-yourself bouquet is picking your flowers. Keep in mind that every flower carries a different meaning, so be sure to choose wisely. Some of the most popular Mother’s Day blossoms include: 1. Roses. Elegant, vibrant, and classic – you simply can’t go wrong with roses! These Mother’s Day favorites look terrific on their own or in a mixed bouquet. Consider blending colors for a bit of pizzazz. Yellow roses symbolize friendship and joy, while pink roses represent elegance and grace. Both are terrific choices for your Mother’s Day bouquet. 2. Peonies. If you want a real show stopper, then look no further than peonies. Embodying happiness and prosperity, these colorful flowers bloom largely and dramatically, making a beautiful statement in any bouquet. 3. Tulips. Tulips symbolize spring and rebirth, making them a popular go-to for Mother’s Day bouquets. Again, a mix of colors can make a more impressive statement than a solid bouquet. 4. Carnations. Pink and white carnations are a simple yet stunning addition to any bouquet. They also symbolize admiration – perfect for mom! 5. Lilies. Although lilies are traditionally associated with Easter, adding one to your Mother’s Day ensemble can enhance the look of your bouquet in a major way. Design The next important component to consider for your DIY Mother’s Day project is design. We suggest going with a cluster design, which requires a very full arrangement secured tightly at the stems. This effect creates a flower “cluster” at the top of the bouquet. Another technique that many florists use is segmentation. Segmented bouquets feature several different flowers separated by type and/or color, rather than placed sporadically within the arrangement.

Presentation And, last but not least, presentation. While your bouquet presentation possibilities are truly endless, here are a few of the most popular suggestions: 1. Vase. Gifting flowers in a glass vase provides your mom with an additional keepsake. Both tall and short vase models are available, so you’ll be able to completely customize the look and feel of your bouquet. 2. Craft Paper. For an eye-catching vintage look, consider wrapping your flowers in brown craft paper tied with string. Beautiful and classic! 3. Cellophane. Cellophane is easy to use and looks great. Complete the look with a bright ribbon around the middle of your packaging. No matter which flowers or design you choose, a handcrafted floral arrangement is a meaningful gift that is sure to impress your mom this year.
