TIDBITS® INVITES YOU TO
EAT BREAKFAST! by Patricia L. Cook
This Tidbits examines breakfast around the world. Many studies say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but when it comes to what people think should be on the breakfast table, there are quite a few differences. • The word breakfast means “to break the fast,” meaning to eat again after hours of sleep and no food. Numerous nutritional studies have shown that people who skip breakfast are more likely to have problems with metabolism, weight and concentration. • The first use of the word “breakfast” was in the 15th century when it was likely that porridge or bread was eaten. The first appearance in print that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” was not from a medical professional or scientist; it was in the book “Metamorphosis” by German writer Franz Kafka in 1915. • The typical full breakfast in the United States and Canada is based on the “full English breakfast,” although in many households this type of breakfast is now more likely to be reserved for weekends and holidays. When more people lived on farms and got up early for manual labor, a large breakfast was common. Now, it is not unusual to start the day with simply cereal or toast along with milk, juice and/or coffee. turn the page for more!

BREAKFAST (continued): • So, what does a “full English breakfast” include, and when did this custom start? • In the 19th century, when men started to work regular hours in offices, two-course breakfasts became popular. They would start with porridge and then have bacon, eggs, tea and more later. This became known as the “full English breakfast” during the time of World War I when lighter, quicker breakfasts became popular. • A customary “full English breakfast” has bacon and eggs as the star of the plate. They might be accompanied by sausage, fish, toast and marmalade, grilled tomatoes and muffins or other breads. Typically, the British would start with orange juice, cereals, stewed or fresh fruit and tea. • A full breakfast for the English may also have included oddities such as baked beans and black pudding. Black pudding is generally made by mixing pig’s blood with pork fat and oatmeal or barley. It is so popular in northern England that a festival is dedicated to it: the World Black Pudding Throwing Championships! • The Irish also love a full breakfast like the British, including black pudding. They are likely to include white pudding and soda bread on the table as well. White pudding is similar to black except it doesn’t contain blood. Both of these “puddings” are formed into sausages.

• Large Scottish breakfasts also include dishes similar to those of the English, but they may add potato scones, haggis and oatcakes. Haggis is another odd sausage, made from chopped lamb’s heart, lungs and liver mixed with suet, oats, onions and seasonings and usually boiled. (Hungry yet?) • If you are wondering when boxed cereals became popular for breakfast, this occurred in the late 1880s and was prompted by a backlash against large breakfasts. Many thought these large morning meals were leading to health problems. Cereal pioneers like W.K. Kellogg, Henry Perky and C.W. Post developed products that became extremely popular. Cereals were very important when eggs and bacon were rationed during World War II. • There are many places in the world where the morning meal is not much different from other meals. • In Mexico, it is not unusual to have beans and cheese served with tortillas. Just as for other meals, spicy food is welcomed at breakfast. • In Thailand, you’ll find a spicy fish dish with mint and pork and served with rice offered by street vendors in the morning. Other dishes are available as well, dishes very similar to those served at midday and evening meals. Continued on page 7

Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” -Ben Franklin The success of veterinary medicine in the last 50 years has doubled the life span of cats. A better quality of life, reduction in disease and the ability to treat chronic disease all have improved the health of felines. The four most important reasons for this improvement are: 1. Vaccinations -- decreasing or almost eliminating feline distemper, feline upper respiratory disease, feline leukemia and rabies which caused a mortality of 30% a year. 2. Eliminating Internal and External Parasites – effective deworming and external parasite control have saved many lives. 3. Indoor Life Style – indoor living is safer than the outdoor life style. 4. Better Nutrition – feline nutritional advances have helped cats live longer and healthier.
The number one progressive disease is obesity and it has a fix – a balanced reducing diet. In the last 4 years, a study showed that 90% of cats were obese. Our feeding practice of “free feeding” dry diets causes fat cats. That means adding pounds which will stress the heart, kidneys and liver, decrease mobility and make your cat less social. Then add on arthritis and there is increased pain on moving around. Add on high blood pressure and your cat may lose his sight, his kidneys will be stressed and the heart’s output is decreased. Add on diabetes and your cat’s life expectancy maybe only 3 more years.
The number three progressive disease is boredom/ inactivity and it has a quick fix – start playing with your cat. Great cat toys and cat games exist that most cats love.

SHOULD YOUR INVESTMENTS.
Cats and dogs can be infected with heartworm disease by the bite from a carrier mosquito. The coyote has become the ‘natural’ reservoir for the disease. Dogs are the primary host for the disease, but cats and other animals can become infected, and the consequences are serious. Indoor cats are just as susceptible as outdoor cats! The good news is that this disease can be prevented. There is no effective treatment once your cat is infected, so prevention is the key. A safe, monthly topical medication is the best way to protect your cat(s). If you have questions please call our hospital.

Chronic disease is another story. These diseases are slowly progressive with age, are multiple and there is usually no quick fix but good control.
The number two progressive disease is dental disease and it has a fix – dental prophies when needed (every 6-12 months is routine for many cats). Dental disease is painful and most cats won’t let you know until many teeth cannot be saved.

Scott McQueen This very common mineral consisting of iron oxide has a great array of colors from steel gray to almost black, brown to reddish brown, or red. The variety known as rainbow hematite exhibits colors similar to oil patches on water. The name hematite is derived from the Greek word haimatites for blood. Hematite also occurs everywhere on the planet Mars where it is responsible for the planet's distinctive red color. It is mined in Australia, Brazil (rainbow variety), England, Mexico, the United States and Canada. It is the state mineral of Alabama, where approximately 375 million tons were mined between l840 and 1975. When cut into thin plates, hematite is red and transparent; when polished it is very shiny. It is commonly used for ring stones and bead-necklaces. In ancient times people believed that large deposits of hematite formed on battlegrounds where injured soldiers bled and died. It was also believed to have healing properties, and had the ability to give strength to the body while lessening life’s stresses. It was also thought to increase optimism and courage and reduce negativity. Sounds like everyone should be carrying a hematite stone in their pocket, don’t you think?

Mold Is Hazardous to Home and Health
MAKING YOUR HOUSE A HOME
Q: For a few months now, I’ve noticed a mildewy odor in the downstairs bathroom. I keep the bathroom clean, and I even pour a cup of vinegar down the drains once a month, but the odor comes back. For now, I’m using an air freshener to mask the smell, but how can I locate and get rid of it? -- Gaia M., Baton Rouge, La. A: That mildew smell is most likely from mold growth. If you can’t visually locate a patch of mildew or mold in the bathroom, such as in lower corners of the wall or the shower, contact a plumber. It’s very likely that a water leak somewhere behind the wall is causing the mold problem. Even a small amount of mold in a home can trigger allergies or breathing problems in many people. It’s also a warning signal that water is damaging important parts of your home -- not just the drywall but the wood framing, sheathing, foundation and more. A leaky supply or drainpipe can mean water is dripping behind the walls. A plumber can inspect these pipes without causing damage to the rest of the bathroom. The plumber will then recommend the best action to take to stop the moisture damage and remove the mold. If mold is affecting carpet or wallpaper in the area, you’ll need to replace those items as well. If dampness is a constant problem in the bathroom, make sure the room is getting adequate airflow, even if the original problem is repaired. An exhaust fan is fairly inexpensive and quickly removes humidity from the bathroom -- for example, after a hot shower. In many states a fan is required by building codes, and the plumber likely will recommend you install one if there isn’t one already. HOME TIP: Clean up mold with a mild detergent rather than bleach, which can irritate your lungs. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@ thisisahammer.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

THE 1970’s (continued): • China is a very large country with a diverse population representing many cultures, so there are multiple variations in breakfast foods. Probably the most common breakfast dish nationwide is rice porridge with pickled vegetables. Some people include hard-boiled eggs and steamed bread as well. In the north, many enjoy hot soy milk and fried dough sticks that are like unsweetened doughnuts. On the streets in China you can find a wide variety of steamed breads, noodles and dumplings, some with meat or veggie fillings. Until recently, cow’s milk was not a part of Chinese diets. Now consumption of cow’s mike is encouraged, as is eating Western-style bread, as the Chinese have begun to follow the Western way of making children big and strong.

• In Russia, oladi are a popular breakfast food. Similar to pancakes, oladi are fried, soft inside and have a crispy edge. They’re usually eaten with sour cream, jam, honey or fresh berries. • Another country with a popular pancake offering is Sweden. Pannkakor is a thin, flat cake, fried on both sides, similar to a crepe. It is usually served with a fruity filling.

• The French are known for the pastries they enjoy for breakfast — or anytime with a cup of strong
coffee. The croissant is one of the famous pastries for which the French have been given credit, and they do serve them beautifully, but it was actually adapted from an Austrian pastry in that originated in the mid-1800s. • The Austrian “kipferl” or “kipfel” was brought to Paris by Austrian August Zang when he opened a Viennese bakery in 1838 or 1839. French bakers loved the pastry and started imitating Zang’s “kipferl.” Their pastries became the “croissant,” which is French for crescent. • Many places like the croissant now, including Portugal and Spain. Stuffed croissants and plenty of coffee are very popular at breakfast time. Another quick Spanish specialty is Pan a la Tomate, which is simple but delicious. It consists of bread rubbed with garlic and tomato and then topped with olive oil and salt. • In Iceland, a hot and hearty breakfast is needed to fight off the dark, icy cold mornings. Hafragrautur, or oatmeal, is served with raisins, nuts and brown sugar. • Whether you want a hot bowl of cooked cereal, cold cereal or a full English breakfast with eggs, bacon and more, we hope reading this Tidbits will encourage you to try something new. Enjoy the “most important meal of the day!”

Fighting Cavities with ‘Sugar’ ?? Q. Can we really fight tooth decay with ‘sugar’? A. Yes! An important way to fight cavities is with the sugar substitute sweetener Xylitol. Xylitol is a natural sugar that not only helps fight cavities, but can actually prevent them. Q. What is Xylitol? A. Xylitol is a naturally-occuring sugar alcohol found in the fibers of fruits and vegetables and other plants. It is found in berries, oats, mushrooms, corn husks, sugar cane, trees, and many other plants. It is practically as sweet as table sugar, and is used as a sweetener in certain brands of chewing gum, mints, toothpastes, mouth rinses, candy, lemonade mixes, and all-purpose sweeteners. (Be sure to check the label!) Q. How does ‘sugar’ (Xylitol) fight tooth decay? A. Xylitol fights cavities in several ways: (1) It attracts and then inhibits, or starves out, the specific bacteria that cause tooth decay. (2) Unlike ordinary table sugar, Xylitol does not break Cindy Rose down, or ferment, into harmful acids that de-mineralize tooth enamel and cause a cavity. (3) Xylitol creates just the right chemistry in the saliva to re-mineralize the Calcium and Phosphate minerals back into damaged tooth structure and “heal” the early cavity.

Q. Is Xylitol safe? A. Xylitol is safe for humans; it is deadly for dogs. Xylitol has no known toxicity in humans. However, “man’s best friend” does not tolerate Xylitol, even in small amounts. Therefore, since many dogs have a “sweet tooth”, they can easily snoop around and find their master’s stash of gum, mints, or candy. Be sure to keep xylitol-containing products out of your dog’s reach. If you suspect your dog has consumed any Xylitol, get him/her to the Vet immediately! Q. How much Xylitol do I need? A. Research suggests one should consume six to ten grams per day. A stick of Xylitol gum or mint typically has about one gram of Xylitol. For optimum effect in fighting cavities, it’s important to consume Xylitol throughout the day; so it will continually fight those “bad bugs” that cause cavities, and aid in remineralizing. KEEP YOUR TEETH AND GUMS HEALTHY FOR A LIFETIME

pleased if we could someday attain “millionaire” status. While there are no perfect formulas or guarantees, here are some steps to consider when working toward any investment goal:
Put time on your side. The earlier you begin saving and investing, the better your chances of reaching your financial goal. You can’t expect to “strike it rich” immediately with any single investment, but by investing year in and year out, and by choosing quality investment vehicles, you have the opportunity to achieve growth over time.

Pay yourself first. If you wait until you “have a little extra money lying around” before you invest, you may well never invest. Instead, try to “pay yourself first.” Each month, move some money automatically from a checking or savings account into an investment. When you’re first starting out in the working world, you might not be able to afford much, but as you advance in your career, you can increase your contributions. Control your debts. It’s easier said than done, but if you can keep a lid on your debt payments, you’ll have more money with which to invest.
Take advantage of tax deferral. When you invest in tax-deferred vehicles, such as a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) Misc and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, your money has the opportunity to grow faster than it would if placed in IT S worth the look! mymonavie.com/3496338 an investment on which you paid taxes each year. As an investor, one of the best things you can do to build your wealth is to increase the number of shares you own in your investments. So, look for buying opportunities, such as when prices are low. Also, consider reinvesting any dividends or distributions you may receive from your investments.

Don’t be overly cautious. For your money to grow, you need to put a portion of your investment dollars in growth-oriented vehicles, such as stocks. It is certainly true that stock prices will always fluctuate, sometimes quite sharply, and you may receive more or less than your original investment when sold. But if you avoid stocks entirely in favor of more stable vehicles, you run the risk of earning returns that may not keep you ahead of inflation. As you approach retirement, and even during retirement, your portfolio will probably still need some growth potential. Work with your financial advisor to determine the appropriate approach for you. Think long term. By creating a long-term investment strategy and sticking to it, you’ll be less likely to take a “timeout” from investing in response to perceived negative news, such as market downturns and political crises. Following these suggestions may someday allow you to reach the point when your financial goals become a reality for you.

My littlest guy is in kindergarten and one of his “specials” is Technology. Like his brother, he loves doing anything on the computer. We impose limits on screen time in our home, but we also believe that getting comfortable with a computer at a young age will benefit him now and in the future. Here are some of our favorite educational websites that help kids get familiar with the keyboard and enhance their learning at the same time: •
• •
• • •
Starfall.com seems to be a favorite “first” website among parents, with games that teach letter sounds and the alphabet, online books that can help pre-readers and early readers, and online movies that reinforce these skills. PBSKids.org focuses on early literacy. Children choose their favorite shows and play games associated with them. NickJr.com also links games with favorite shows. The games and activities are primarily for preschoolers. Many teach early math skills. TuxPaint.org is a drawing program for ages 3-12. CoolMath4Kids.com teaches everything from simple addition to pre-algebra. FunBrain.com has a Math Arcade, Comic Book Reading, and a Playground -- kids won’t even realize it’s educational!

Question: What is bounce on a golf club and why do I need it. Bounce:The bottomof the wedge is more important than the face, so consider the bounce angle instead of the loft when choosing the correct club. Bounce refers to how the trailing edge hangs below the leading edge which helps the sole work through the sand. In fluffy sand a 56 degree wedge with 12 to 14 degrees of bounceis better than a 60 degree with 8 degrees of bounce. Packed sand go with the 60. On long bunker shots don't try to pick the ball with your sand wedge from 25 or 30 yards out. Make your standard explosion swing with a gap or pithing wedge. Much easier.

A new scam targeting older men:
20+ Strains, fresh edibles, tinctures, tonics, earwax, peanut butter, candy and much much more!
(some young ones too) Women often receive warnings about protecting themselves at the mall and in dark parking lots, etc. This is the first warning I have seen for men. I wanted to pass it on in case you haven't heard about it yet.
(719)487-0901
626 Hwy 105 Palmer Lake, CO 80133 www.milehigholistics.com
Here's how the scam works:
You agree and they climb into your vehicle. On the way, they start undressing. Then, one of them starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet. I had my wallet stolen Nov. 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, again on the 17th, 20th, 24th, and the 29th. Also, Dec. 1st, 4th, 7th, twice on the 8th, five times in January already, and very likely again this upcoming weekend. So, tell your friends to be careful. What a horrible way to take advantage of us older men. Warn your friends to be vigilant.
An Apology Letter Hi Sweetheart, I am sorry about getting into an argument about putting up the Christmas lights. I guess that sometimes I feel like you are pushing me too hard when you want something. I realize that I was wrong and I am apologizing for being such a hard-headed guy. All I want is for you to be happy and be able to enjoy the holiday season. Nothing brightens the Christmas spirit like Christmas lights! I took the time to hang the lights for you today and now I will be off to the hockey rink. Again, I am very sorry for the way I acted yesterday. I'll be home later. Love you……;

Her response Hi Honey, Thank you for that heart-felt apology. I don't often get an apology from you, and I truly appreciate it. I, too, felt bad about the argument and wanted to apologize. I realize that I can sometimes be a little pushy. I will try to respect your feelings from now on. Thank you for taking the time to hang the Christmas lights for me. It really means a lot. In the spirit of giving, I washed your truck for you and now I am off to the mall. I love you too!

Two nice looking, college-age girls will come over to your car or truck as you are packing your purchases into your vehicle. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their skimpy T-shirts. (It's impossible not to look.) When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say 'No,' but, instead, ask for a ride to McDonald's.

A 'heads up' for those men who are regular customers at Lowe's, Home Depot, Costco, or even Wal-Mart. This one caught me totally by surprise. Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your friends.
