• What makes a creature an insect? In order to be classified as an insect, it must have three body parts (the head, thorax, and abdomen), six jointed legs, two antennae, and an outside skeleton. That counts out spiders and centipedes! There are 1,017,018 known species of insects in the world, but experts feel there might be another nine million that haven’t yet been discovered. Ninety-five percent of all the animal species on Earth are insects.

• Insects are divided into 32 orders, with beetles as the largest order. There are 125 different families of beetles, and half a million different species. Did you know that one out of every four animals on Earth is a beetle? In fact the world’s largest insect is a beetle found in South America, the longhorn beetle measuring 9.85 inches (25 cm). The world’s heaviest insect is also a beetle, the African Goliath beetle, which can weigh up to 3.4 oz. (96 grams). … turn the page for more!

CREEPY CRAWLIES (continued):
• There’s a difference between an insect and a bug. A bug is actually an insect with characteristics other insects don’t have, such as a stylet mouth (one that is shaped like a straw) that is used to suck plant juices. True bugs have thickened front wings, which are colored close to the body, but clearer and thinner at the wing’s hind end. Cicadas, aphids, and stink bugs are truly bugs, but ticks, beetles, and flies are not. • Perhaps one of the most unpopular crawlies is the cockroach. It is one of the most adaptable creatures on Earth, which makes getting rid of them very difficult. There are more than 4,000 species of this pest worldwide. They are coldblooded and can live without food for a month. They can even survive for a week without a head. Because they breathe through little holes in each body segment, they don’t need a mouth or head to breathe. After a week of being unable to drink water, they die of thirst. A cockroach is able to hold its breath for 40 minutes, and can survive being under water for 30 minutes. No wonder they are so hard to get rid of! It doesn’t take long for a cockroach to spread bacteria throughout a home – they can run 3 miles per hour (4.8 kg/hr). Although the average cockroach is ½” to 2” long (1.3 to 5 cm), one South American species is 6” long (15.2 cm) and has a 12” (30.5 cm) wingspan. • In the British Isles, the ladybug is called the ladybird. The ladybug is a type of beetle that can be red, yellow, black, grey, or brown, depending on the species, and might have spots, stripes, or no markings at all. Red and orange ladybugs have seven spots, three on each side and one in the middle. The number of spots has nothing to do with this beetle’s age. The number and placement of spots are determined by its species and are fixed well before the ladybug is born. • Many countries, including Russia, Turkey, and Italy consider the ladybug a sign of good luck and those folks will make a wish when one is sighted. Ladybugs are very useful creatures, as they feed on aphids and other garden pests. • Termites cause nearly $5 billion in damage every year. These wood-destroying insects can destroy a home from the inside out before a homeowner even notices. Add up the weight of all the humans on Earth, and it will be less than the total weight of all the world’s termites! About 10% of the world’s animals are termites. Damp wood is an ideal nesting place for termites. So avoid infestation by dealing with leaking plumbing issues immediately. Be sure water drains away from the house, don’t stack any wood next to your home, and keep an 18” (45 cm) gap between soil and your foundation. Although termites can be extremely destructive, they can be ecologically beneficial. They break down dead and decaying trees in the forest into rich new soil. • Another 10% of the world’s animals are ants, with at least 1.5 million ants for every human being on the planet. There are more than 12,000 species of ants, and they can be found on every continent except Antarctica. One acre of Amazon rainforest is home to up to 3.5 million ants. Ants are hardy creatures, able to survive 24 hours underwater, with many varieties able to swim. They are the longest living of all insects, with a life span of up to 30 years. When seeking food, the colony sends out a scout Continued ant, who wanders on page 5

Cats are truly unique. This comes as no shock to you, the cat owner, but their uniqueness goes beyond adorable mannerisms, and all the way down to the molecules and enzymes in their bodies. Cats metabolize medications and drugs VERY differently than any other species. As a carnivore, cats are designed to eat a meat-based diet and their entire digestive tract is tailored to that scheme. Compared to omnivorous/herbivorous species, cats have more acidic saliva with fewer digestive enzymes, a singlechambered stomach that maintains a low pH even in the presence of food, and a relatively shorter intestinal tract. These carnivorous adaptations will effect how cats absorb and metabolize orally administered medications. Cats also have less ability to detoxify and excrete substances through a pathway in the liver known as “glucuronidation.” This deficiency makes them very sensitive to particular drugs, because instead of metabolizing them, a toxic form of the drug stays in their system for extended periods of time at high levels. This is exactly what happens in Tylenol® (acetaminophen) toxicity in cats. When any oral medication is given, it is absorbed from the intestines into the bloodstream and then taken to the liver. In most animals, glucuronidation in the liver helps to exrete substances, including Tylenol®. However, in cats, with minimal ability to glucuronidate Tylenol®, they essentially get an overdose of the drug because so much stays in their body. Feline veterinary pharmacy has grown in leaps and bounds, from an almost non-existent field to one of increasing variety and specificity. Your veterinarian is your cat’s best pharmacist for either non-prescription or prescription medications. Realize that veterinarians are trained in pharmacology, but human pharmacists are rarely trained in the details of feline drug metabolism. So always ask your vet, and never give over the counter medications without guidance! Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. Diamond is a stone that excels in brilliance and displays a striking play of prismatic colors. It is the preferred gem in engagement and wedding rings, which are worn every day. It is also the hardest natural material known, where hardness is defined as resistance to scratching. Their hardness makes them quite useful in industry as cutting and grinding tools. Diamonds are used to polish, cut, or wear away any material, including other diamonds. There are diamond-tipped drill bits and saws, and diamond powder is used as an abrasive. Less expensive industrial-grade diamonds, known as bort, are used for such purposes. Diamonds were probably first mind in India over 3,000 years ago. Roughly 49% of diamonds originate from central and southern Africa, although significant sources have been discovered in Canada, India, Russia, Brazil, and Australia. Today experts in the field of gemology grade diamonds and other gemstones based on the characteristics most important to their value as a gem. Four characteristics, known informally as the four Cs, are now commonly used as the basic descriptors of diamonds: these are carat, cut, color, and clarity.

about until it finds a food source. After eating some of the food, the ant heads back to the nest in a straight line, leaving a trail of secreted pheromones, a scent that the other ants will be able to follow back to the food. • Massive communities of ants called supercolonies have been discovered stretching for thousands of miles, with the largest ever found over 3,750 miles (6,000 km) wide. Ants are capable of carrying 5 times their body weight with their mandibles. • The 40,000 different species of spiders are arachnids, not insects, since they have eight legs and only two body segments and have no antennae. While birds and bats eat a significant amount of insects, spiders eat more than those combined. • The largest species of tarantulas have a leg span of nearly 10 inches (25.4 cm) and have been known to kill mice, lizards, and birds. When tarantulas feel threatened, they defend themselves by throwing needly, barbed hairs at their attackers. Being hit by one of these causes an irritating rash and sometimes an allergic reaction, but very rarely does it result in death. Tarantulas molt continually, replacing their exoskeletons as they grow. This gives them the ability to even regenerate legs that have been lost. They are very fragile creatures, and a fall from a short height can easily kill them. The female tarantula can live 20 years in captivity and 30 years or longer in the wild. However, males have an average lifespan of between five and ten years.

Follow these five tips to make your landscape look the best ever this season. Tip #1 - Freshen the mulch! Great looking landscapes have that “manicured” look and adding fresh mulch makes the landscape look neat and clean. Fresh mulch covers up ugly weeds, roots and levels soil. More importantly, it protects the roots of plants from temperature extremes, prevents weeds from germinating, prevents erosion and improves the look of beds. Tip # 2 - Install seasonal color! Well placed seasonal color beds will add a bright spot to the landscape. Areas around your mailbox, driveway, front door and garage entry are great locations for seasonal color. By adding an area as small as 6 foot by 3 foot in two or three locations, you can transform the look of your landscape. Tip # 3 - Prune your shrubs! Each spring shrubs grow quickly. The new growth can cover windows, walkways or disrupt views throughout your property. As flowers complete blooming on Russian sage, potentilla, and spirea it is a great time to cut back plants hard. Pruned shrubbery helps create that manicured look. Tip # 4 - Fertilize your lawn, shrubs and trees! Healthy plants, lawns and trees can add as much as 20% to the value of your home and property. One of the safest investments today is to improve your landscaping. In some cases, basic maintenance chores like fertilizing, mowing, edging, weeding and pruning can dramatically improve the look of your property.Steady, scheduled predictable lawn maintenance services can make your property shine all season long. Tip #5 -Enhance your landscaping! Consider adding a backyard brick paver patio with a built in BBQ. Think of this as adding an “outdoor room” to your home. Consider adding a garden pond to expand your gardening hobby. Nothing relaxes like the gentle sounds of water as it splashes over a waterfall. Install an irrigation system in your lawn to help keep watering an easy part of lawn maintenance. Think about building a wildlife area or butterfly garden. Or simply plant trees that add beauty and shade to the home’s exterior.

Are fruits and vegetables really healthy?
Let’s look at how our food is grown. Most with chemicals, some without as many, and some without any. The large commercial factory farms produce most of the “fresh” food that is available today in the U.S. Their concern is quantity and looks not nutritional value. Factory farms use chemicals thought the process of growing our “fresh” foods. I call it a “process” because it is not natural. First they spray chemicals on the ground to kill all living organisms so they don’t have to deal with weeds and things. Then they plant seeds or starter plants that have been genetically modified so herbicides will not affect them. This includes most of what we eat. Corn, beans, soy beans, peas, squash, cucumbers, etc…… even cotton. The term for these crops is “ Round-Up Ready”. In the growth cycle of the crop Round-Up can be sprayed onto the crops and it will kill weeds and pest plants but the round-up will not affect the “Food” crop because the chemical is already in the plant. When the chemicals are sprayed on the food crops they still absorb the chemical and hang onto it so we can eat it. YUM,,,,, let’s go out to the garage , grab our bottle of Round-Up and take a big drink. In reallality that’s what we are doing. The purpose for this type of farming is to get a bigger harvest with less time and expense invested into producing the “food” and the big factory farms have a higher profit margins at our expense. Monsanto, the producer of Round-up says ingesting the chemical has limited health risks. It doesn’t kill everyone that consumes it , just a few. And which part of this equation are you in? Let’s just throw a little logic in the whole scheme of things….does consuming chemicals on a daily basis make body healthy and strong like the advertising companies tell us. NOT……Daily consumption of these chemicals builds up in our bodies and is one of h the main reason why the health of Americans is deWay, Suiteclining 103 so rapidly. And our President and the Federal 029 Government is all in favor of chemical farming and has passed special laws protecting Monsanto so they can continue to poison the American public. h Way, SuiteMore 103 next time on some better ways to grow our foods. 029 Thanks C ya Mike
