A typical 70-year-old human will have walked a distance equivalent to going around the circumference of the earth four times. • High heels prevent the ankles from absorbing their normal share of the force of walking, shunting it instead to the toes. A three-inch heel puts more than seven times the pressure on the forefoot than a flat shoe. This promotes many foot ailments such as bunions, hammer toes, and neuroma, which is a painful thickening of the nerve that connects the toes. A study of 3,000 surgeries performed on the forefoot found that 87% of the bunion surgeries, 81% of hammer toe surgeries, and 89% of the neuroma surgeries were done on women’s feet. • High heels also affect the knees. A study published in the British medical journal The Lancet showed that high heels cause strain and pressure on the joint that joins the kneecap and the underlying thigh bone. The rotational forces on the inner part of the knee joint were 23 percent higher when women participating in the study walked in heels than when they walked barefoot. • Surprisingly, the big toe has only two bones, while the rest of the toes have three. Although nearly every bone in the body has an official name, one exception is the toe bones. They are known only as “metatarsal digits #1-5.” A fourthyear medical student at Yale decided to undo the injustice by bestowing names on the toes. He called them porcellus fori, porcellus domi, porcellus carnivorus, porcellus nonvoratus, and porcellus plorans domun. In Latin, these names translate as little pig at market, baby pig at home, meat-eating piglet, small pig that has not eaten, and piggy crying all the way home. Some orthopedic surgeons have picked up his names, but doctors have not yet gone hog wild over the idea. • The measuring device in shoe shops is called a Brannock Device, after the inventor who designed it in the 1920s. The firm is still going strong. Turn the page for more! • Not surprisingly, the place on the body where the skin is thickest is the heel of the foot, where it’s about 1/16th of an inch thick. Compare that to the thinnest skin on the body— the eyelids— at 2/1000 of an inch. Although the heel is the area on the body that is least sensitive to pain, it’s also the sweatiest area. The 125,000 sweat glands in a single foot can excrete as much as half a pint of sweat per day. Research done at the University of Miami centered on foot odor. How does a research team study foot odor? First you get a bunch of volunteers to sit with their feet in plastic bags. Then you have the laboratory staff sniff the feet. They discovered that people with foot odor had large numbers of a certain bacteria on their bodies— the same type of bacteria found in Limburger cheese. Early in kittenhood purring becomes a mysterious part of your cat. About two days of age kittens purr in the presence of their mother and nursing. Early purring is a signal to mom that ‘things are good’ and kneading with the front paws stimulates milk let down. Mature kittens continue to purr around humans and this may be a transfer of a mother figure emotion to surrogate humans. Finally, the three related behaviors of purring, kneading and drooling show a link to nursing and feline contentment. Purring is communication, emotion and meditation all wrapped in one. Cats purr when they are comfortable and content, when they are anxious and fearful, when they are anxious or are in pain and when they are sick or injured. It appears that purring puts the domestic feline in a meditative state that can vibrate into his human friends. Petting cats and the resultant purr has been proven to bring down human blood pressure and reduce stress. Add laughter and play to the domestic feline equation and humans and cats have a win, win situation. How do cats purr? The sound comes from the larynx where the vocal folds vibrate at constant frequencies. Turbulent air flow during respiration is called “tonal buzz” by scientists but we know it as purring! Humans become more productive in the presence of cats. When college students were allowed feline roommates at five major universities, these students studied longer, had less stress and got a grade point higher than students who did not have a feline study buddy. Cats have also been shown to help autistic children focus on studies and living a more productive life. The ‘sacred bond’ between a purring cat and humans has spanned the years from the early Egyptians to the present.

Q: My next-door neighbor told me that the small dirt clumps and holes I’m seeing around my backyard are probably moles or some other burrowing rodent. He says they’re not good for my garden. How can I stop them from making themselves at home? -- Larry R., Indiana A: You’ll probably get tons of advice on how to get rid of moles that dig into and ruin your lawn or garden, but not all of it is good. Moles can be difficult to chase off, and many remedies, like treating the lawn with lime, or using rodent bait to trap the moles, don’t work, according to Purdue University’s Plant & Pest Diagnostic Laboratory. A mole’s favorite food is earthworms. It will eat grubs, but not often, and it doesn’t eat grain or seeds like mice or squirrels do. That means that baits, poisons and traps labeled for rodents won’t work for moles. Baits that are labeled as being for rodents and moles also probably won’t work well. Instead, look specifically for bait and/or traps for moles and no other pest. There are two effective ways to get rid of moles: poison them, using a bait that attracts them and is laced with a specific poison; or trap and remove them, using traps specifically created for moles and the tunnels they burrow. Now, if you’re opposed to killing small creatures -- whether on principle, or due to the ick factor -- you can trap and remove the mole to a remote location away from other people’s lawns. If the problem is not too bad -- you have a couple of dirt mounds in the yard or in an inconspicuous place like the edge of the garden -- you can consider not doing anything, since moles do help aerate the soil. But if the problem is pretty bad, you do need to take action, one way or another. HOME TIP: To discourage moles from taking up residence in your lawn or garden, try spreading castor oil granules around tunnel entrances, or spray a solution of castor oil and cayenne pepper into mole tunnels. FEET (continued): the number of bacteria, and thus improve the smell of feet. Why some people carry large amounts of this bacteria and others don’t is still unknown, but is under investigation. It could be differences in a person’s sweat or pH balance. Since it’s not a good idea to take antibiotics to reduce odor, this valiant research team is now trying to find ways to keep bacteria from sticking to the skin, to prevent bacteria from getting a “foothold.” Around 80 million Americans suffer from smelly feet. • One company called Sweet Feet combated foot odor with scented socks. Impregnated with various scents such as powder, citrus, strawberry, and peach, the footsie socks threw off a long-lasting fragrance. The odor remained even through many launderings and the socks cost about $20 per pair. • Many people do not wear the correct shoe size for their feet. Often this is because people stick to the size they were measured for when young and fail to realize that their feet change shape. • The only thing worse for feet than high heels was the Chinese practice of foot-binding. A young girl’s feet were wrapped with a bandage ten feet long, strapped in a figure eight around the foot and ankle. It was tightened daily and pulled so taut that the four smallest toes were forced under the foot, breaking the bones. The bones in the arch of the foot would also break, forcing the arch into a sharp inverted “V” shape. Every two weeks the girl was given a pair of shoes two tenths of an inch smaller than the previous pair. Infection often resulted, sometimes followed by gangrene, amputation of toes, and even death. After two years, the ideally deformed foot fit a shoe only four inches long, and would proudly be called “lotus feet” or “lily feet.” Because women with lily feet could only put weight on their heels and couldn’t walk without pain, they hobbled with a mincing step which men considered charming. No one knows why the custom became habit, though it’s conjectured that the practice was popular because it prevented unhappy wives from running away. The practice began with the higher classes in order to prove that the family was so rich that the daughters didn’t need to work. However, a majority of low-class girls had their feet bound anyway in the hopes that they would find a high-class marriage. Only the most poverty-stricken families, whose daughters needed to work in the fields, failed to follow the practice. Beauty in the feet was considered more important that beauty in the face. Foot-binding was the norm in China for a thousand years, until being outlawed in the Revolution of Sun Yat-Sen in 1911. A 1997 study of elderly women in Beijing who had suffered from foot binding in their youth found they tended to fall easily, were often unable to rise from a chair without help, could not squat, and had higher rates of osteoporosis.

What Does Dow 15,000 Mean to You? This month, the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a milestone, when, for the first time, it closed above 15,000. Of course, 15,000 is a nice, round number, and it sounds pretty big — but what does it mean to you, as an individual investor? Is it cause for celebration — or is it more of a “caution” flag?

There’s no one simple answer to these questions. Since March 2009 — the low point of the market following the 2008 financial crisis — the “Dow” has risen about 130 percent. And while the Dow is just one index, it’s nonetheless an important measure of the market’s performance — which means that you were likely glad to see the 15,000 mark eclipsed and you’d be happy if the numbers just kept rising. However, as you’re no doubt aware, the market does not move in just one direction. Typically, declines of 10% or more — or “corrections” — occur about once a year. Unfortunately, they're not predictable. Sooner or later, the markets will indeed change course, at least for the short term. When this happens, don’t panic — corrections are a normal part of the market cycle. Still, you might feel like you should do something to cope with the downturn. But what? Here are a few suggestions: • Keep investing — Too many people, when faced with a market drop, decide to “cut their losses” and take a “time out” from investing. But that can be a costly mistake — had these investors bailed out of the market in 2009, and only recently returned, they would have missed a substantial part of that 130 percent run-up in the Dow. And when you invest in a down market, your dollars may actually go farther if the market rebounds, because you would have bought more shares at the lower prices. • Review your portfolio — It’s usually a good idea to review your portfolio at least once a year, and it may be especially important during those times when the market changes directions. Over time, a portfolio can become unbalanced — for example, following a long period of rising prices, some of your growth-oriented investments may have gained so much value that they now take up a larger percentage of your holdings than you had intended, possibly subjecting you to a greater level of risk than you desire. If this happens, you may need to scale back on these investments and reallocate the money elsewhere. • Diversify — Always look for ways to spread your dollars among a range of vehicles — stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other investments. Even within these classes, look for ways to diversify further, such as owning different types of stocks, bonds of varying maturities, and so on. Diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against a loss, but it can help reduce the impact of volatility that can occur in a downturn. The Dow at 15,000 is certainly no minor event. And since stocks don't appear too expensive compared to their earnings, don't be surprised if higher milestones follow. But record highs can be quickly forgotten when the market falls. By being prepared for that day, too, you can help yourself continue to work toward your goals — even when the major market indices have, for the moment, taken a wrong turn. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel ¥ On June 10, 1692, in Salem Village in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Bridget Bishop, the first colonist to be tried in the Salem witch trials, is hanged after being found guilty of the practice of witchcraft. In October, on order of the governor, the Salem witch trials, which resulted in the executions of 19 innocent women and men, effectively ended. ¥ On June 14, 1777, during the American Revolution, the Continental Congress adopts a resolution describing the design of the national flag. It became known as the “Stars and Stripes.” ¥ On June 13, 1905, pitcher Christy Matthewson of the New York Giants throws the second no-hitter of his career. Matthewson won 31 games and lost only nine, and ended the 1905 season with an earned run average of just 1.28, more than a run and a half lower than the league average.

The “John Wayne” name was created during his first starring role “in The Big Trail” in 1930. The director didn’t think Marion was a good name for an actor playing a tough Western hero.
