The history of America is rife with rugged men and women who have explored and tested landscapes all over the world. Here are some of their stories. • Climber Cory Richards was the first American to scale an over-26,000-foot (8,000-m) mountain in winter. Along with partners from Italy and Kazakhstan, Richards climbed the Gasherbrum II in Pakistan. • Richards and his two partners faced hurricane-force winds and temperatures 50 degrees below zero. They performed this amazing feat without guides or supplemental oxygen. • The three men were aware of the perils they faced before beginning the journey. They were told that snow conditions would be unstable, but they couldn’t have foreseen the Class 4 avalanche that nearly killed them. • It was Simone Moro, the veteran climber from Italy, who first freed himself, then helped the other two men dig out of the massive wall of ice. • Richards documented much of the incident with a small, high-definition camera. Immediately after being freed, he documented his own reaction, a combination of relief and terror. turn the page for more!

Americans’ Adventures (continued): • The footage that Richards took was used in a nature documentary called “Cold.” The film chronicles their journey, the first successful attempt to climb the Pakistani peak during winter by anyone. The film played at a number of film festivals in 2011 and is being distributed by Forge Motion Pictures. • Many runners have attempted to beat the time record for completing the entire Appalachian Trail. Observers were surprised to discover that the record had been broken by a female, Pharr Davis. • Davis bested a record held by men for more than 40 years. Davis isn’t, by her own description, even a runner. She has always trained as a longdistance hiker, and her training to beat the record was the same. • Davis completed the trail’s 2,181 miles more than 26 hours faster than the former record holder. The popular assumption before her attempt was that only a faster runner could beat the record, but Davis bucked the conventional wisdom. She began each day before 5 a.m., hiking for 16 hours a day and sleeping directly on the trail.

• Davis was accompanied by her husband, Ben, who served as her support crew. She reached the trail’s southern end in Springer Mountain, Georgia, a little over 46 days after she began. • “We were exploring what people thought was possible, for what was possible on the Appalachian Trail, and what was possible for a woman and a hiker,” Davis told National Geographic magazine afterward. “Records are made to be broken…The method and the approach are what matters more at the end of the day.” • Nick Waggoner was an unknown film graduate from Colorado College when he began filming “Solitaire,” a documentary about his grueling ski odyssey through South America.

• Waggoner filmed over the course of two years with his three co-producers. The four men explored in far-flung locations such as the jungles along the Amazon River, the Cordillera Blanca, the Altiplano and windy Patagonia. • Waggoner filmed on foot, on skis, on boats, on horseback and even while soaring through the sky on a paraglider. He faced tough weather conditions throughout without any of the comforts of normal travel. He and his group lived out of tents in driving rain and snow, occasionally for weeks at a time. • The motley crew often hiked thousands of miles in darkness before dawn to capture sunrise in these unspoiled vistas. They scaled broken glaciers in search of breathtaking vistas and climbed Continued on page 7

When choosing a feline companion(s) think about the lifelong commitment you are making. Adoption tips that a new owner needs to consider: 1. Consider adopting two cats. Cats need companionship, mental stimulation and play, and they need exercise. Two cats entertain each other. 2. Look for a cat personality that matches yours. A personality generalization: cats with long hair and round heads/bodies are more easygoing than lean cats with narrow heads, shorthair. Talk with an adoption counselor for advice on which cat/kitten might be best for you. 3. Schedule a veterinary visit soon after adoption. Bring all the adoption records to the first visit so your veterinarian can see what has been done with preventive care and what needs to be done in the future. This is the first step in a long healthy life. 4. Make sure your house and family are ready for a new cat(s). Let everyone in the family meet the new cat/kitten before adopting. Consider what measures will be needed to introduce the newcomer into your household. An only cat or adding to existing cats have different problems to consider. 5. Establish a short-term and long-term budget for feline health care. Consider feline health insurance for routine health care and/or major health care for big illness coverage. There are many good plans in the marketplace – ask your veterinarian about them. 6. Get all the supplies ready before your new cat/ kitten comes home. Get at least 2 litterboxes, food and water bowls, toys and scratching posts, a bed, brush/combs and nail clippers. 7. Cat-proof your house. Cats are curious and playful. Put poisons/household cleaners into cabinets, hide electrical cords, pickup up yarn, string, paperclips, etc, and put people food away. 8. Establish a ‘safe haven’ for your cat/kitten to be when new friends and family stress the newcomer. A place to relax and sleep. 9. Include your new cat/kitten in your family’s emergency plan. Add phone numbers to your veterinarian, a 24 hour emergency clinic and local shelters (lost and found) and have extra food and medicine on hand. Microchip your new cat/kitten! 10. Think twice about giving a cat as a gift. A companionship bond is very personal and the person getting the new cat/kitten may not have the same commitment as the giving person. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. FIELD MOWING
Mosquitoes Bring Heartworm Season –
Prevention is Key! Cats and dogs can be infected with heartworm disease by the bite from a carrier mosquito. The coyote has become the ‘natural’ reservoir for the disease. Dogs are the primary host for the disease, but cats and other animals can become infected, and the consequences are serious. Indoor cats are just as susceptible as outdoor cats! The good news is that this disease can be prevented. There is no effective treatment once your cat is infected, so prevention is the key. A safe, monthly topical medication is the best way to protect your cat(s). If you have questions please call our hospital.

Conch Pearl
Scott McQueen The conch pearl is a gemstone you’ve probably never heard of because they are so very rare. Why are they rare? Because it takes about 10,000 Queen Conchs to find one conch pearl and only 1 in 100 of those are of gem quality. And guess what? They are also very expensive. If you are lucky enough to find a matched set for earrings, they will cost you even more. If you find a conch pearl look for the distinctive “flame structure” – it is the only gem on earth to show this effect. You will not find these pearls in most local jewelry stores, and many jewelers won’t even know what you are talking about should you ask to see one. There are only a few places on earth conch pearls can be found: Key West Florida (also known as the Conch Republic), and the Caribbean. If you ask about conch pearls in either of these places you might want to practice using the proper pronunciation so you don’t sound like a two-dollar tourist: “Conch” is pronounced “conk”. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. A: I’m not sure how old your window-unit air conditioner is, but refrigerant (R-22 freon) doesn’t typically need to be replaced in the first couple of years of the unit’s life. Additionally, purchasing and handling of freon is now regulated, so you would need to contact a refrigeration professional to check and charge the unit. Before laying out money for that repair, there are other ways to improve your air conditioner’s cooling capability: --Make sure the unit is mounted properly in the window and isn’t tilting downward or upward. --Check to see if siding, bricks, leaves or other debris are blocking the louvers on the outside of the unit. --Keep curtains and furniture away from the unit while it’s operating, to ensure good airflow into the room. --Make sure the air-conditioning unit is clean, including the coils and the intake filter on the front of the unit. --Start the air conditioner at a medium or low fan setting and a moderate temperature, even on hot days. After 20 minutes, lower the temperature to the setting you want. --Note the time of day that the room feels hottest, and note the position of the sun. Closing the curtains on windows that don’t have an air-conditioning unit can reduce the amount of sun-generated heat in the room. --If you have a ceiling fan, even in another room of the house, use it to your advantage. Reverse the direction of the fan blades (the switch is located on the metal housing for the fan blades) so that air is pulled up by the fan rather than pushed down. Cool air normally sinks, so the fan will stir that air and make the whole house more comfortable. AMERICAN’S ADVENTURES (continued): mountains in excess of 17,000 feet.
Protect your home or business
• When Waggoner arrived in South America to start production on the film, he was greeted with terrible news. His close friend and intended star of the documentary, extreme skier Arne Backstrom, had fallen and died while attempting to scale the 18,897-foot Nevado Pisco. • “Solitaire” is Waggoner’s third project with his company, Sweetgrass Productions. He recently spent a season in Hokkaido, Japan, filming another upcoming nature documentary. His acclaimed work in just three years has already won him awards, most recently at the International Freeski Film Festival in Montreal, Canada. • For Willie and Damian Benegas, seeking adventure is a family affair. This past year the two brothers collected samples of the highest living plant life on Earth. Samples were gathered from the flanks of Mt. Everest, over 22,000 feet in the air. • Willie and Damian delivered the collected vegetation to the U.S. Geological Survey, as well as to researchers at Montana State University. These samples will be used to help scientists investigate how climate change might affect our food production in the future. The brothers also brought back samples of rock near the summit of Everest for microbial study. It is hoped that these samples may provide insight into the effects of high levels of UV radiation on life at the microscopic level. • 65-year-old writer and Arctic explorer John Turk joined 26-year-old pro kayaker Erik Boomer in a 1,485-mile circumnavigation of Ellesmear Island in Canada. This was the last great adventure for Turk, but it was only one of many in a lifetime dedicated to rugged outdoor exploration.

by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S. Master, Academy of General Dentistry The Problem with Wisdom Teeth Q.
How did “Wisdom Teeth” get their name?
A. Wisdom Teeth (Third Molars) develop behind the first and second
permanent molars in each quadrant of the jaw or mouth (Upper Right, Lower Right, Upper Left, Lower Left) areas. The third molars’ common nickname is age-related. They usually try to erupt into the mouth between the ages of 17 and 21, when people become “wiser”. Thus they earned the name “wisdom teeth”. Q. What is an “impacted” wisdom tooth? Q. “Impacted” refers to a tooth that has not fully erupted into a functional relationship with the other teeth in the jaws. An impacted tooth can be either partially or completely covered by bone and gum tissues. Sometimes the wisdom teeth develop at odd angles within the jaw bone, and may even butt up tightly to the next molar forward. For the wisdom tooth area to be healthy, it should be fully erupted and have enough room for the gum around it to be firm and tight around the tooth.

I am twenty-two years old and still have all my wisdom teeth. My dentist wants to take them out, but they don’t bother me. Should I go ahead and have them out? You will be very lucky to never have any problems with an impacted wisdom tooth. Having wisdom teeth removed before they get infected is often the best preventive treatment. Your dentist can evaluate with a special x-ray that shows all the jaw and teeth position and structure, and then discuss with the benefits versus the risks of removing the wisdom teeth.

Q.
Why does the gum around my wisdom tooth become swollen and painful? A. The crypt where the tooth is located practically always has a loose gap or flabby pocket in the gum that lets food particles to get stuck and bacteria from the mouth accumulate under the gum. The tiniest food particle becomes a huge feast for a nasty bacteria bug. It’s a perfect place for a Roman Bacteria Orgy banquet: It’s warm, dark, and moist. The tiny morsel is so big he needs help, and calls in his friends. The party is on – they eat, they drink, and they “multiply”. Pretty soon the bugs all need to go to the bathroom, and they “poop” and “pee” right there in the dining room. Graphic? Yes, but essentially, that’s what happens. Q. Q.
What happens next? Infection! As more banquet “by products” accumulate, the dining room becomes a stinky open sewer. Pus develops in the surrounding bone and gum. The gum and cheek swell up and get really sore - Pain and Misery! The dentist will then have to call in the Swat Team (antibiotics) and sometimes “drain” or clean up the mess. Don’t wait that long. The best approach is to get them checked BEFORE the party begins.
Q.
When should I get my wisdom teeth out?
A.
Typically before the roots of the teeth complete their development, and do “curly cues” in the bone. Root development normally finishes up during the late teen age years. Removal of the wisdom teeth is usually simpler and less complicated when the roots aren’t completely developed. They can be removed at any age, but a “young” body usually heals faster than an “older” body. See your dentist for timing recommendations.

In seeking to accomplish your key objectives, you may be asking yourself a variety of questions, including the following:
Should I contribute as much as possible to my IRA and 401(k)? In a word, yes. Your earnings on a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and a 401(k) grow on a taxdeferred basis, so your money can accumulate faster than it would if placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. Plus, since you typically make 401(k) contributions with pretax dollars, the more you contribute, the lower your taxable income. And your traditional IRA contributions may be tax-deductible, depending on your income. If you meet income guidelines, you can contribute to a Roth IRA, which provides tax-free earnings, provided you meet certain conditions. Should I put away money for my kids’ college education? It’s not easy to fund your retirement accounts plus save money for your children’s college education. Still, college is expensive, so if you feel strongly about helping to pay for the high costs of higher education, you may want to explore college funding vehicles, such as a 529 plan, which offers tax advantages. Should I pay down my mortgage or invest those funds? Most of us dream of freeing ourselves from a mortgage someday. So, as your career advances and your income rises, you may wonder if you should make bigger mortgage payments. On one hand, there’s no denying the psychological benefits you’d receive from paying off your mortgage. However, you may want to consider putting any extra money into your investment portfolio to help as you work toward your retirement goals. Work with your financial advisor to determine what may be most appropriate for your portfolio. Do I have enough insurance in place to protect my family? You may hear that you need seven or eight times your annual income in life insurance, but there’s really no “right” figure for everyone. You may want to consult with a financial advisor to determine how much life insurance is appropriate for your needs. Am I familiar with my parents’ financial situation and estate considerations? Now is the time to communicate with your parents about a variety of issues related to their financial situation and estate plans. The more you know, the better positioned you’ll be to provide assistance and support if and when it’s needed. Just to name one example, you should inquire of your parents if they’ve designated a durable power of attorney to make financial decisions for them in case they’re ever incapacitated. By answering these questions, you can get a handle on all the financial issues you face at your stage of life. It may seem challenging, but taking the time now can help you better position yourself to reach your financial goals. Skips Tips:Question: What is the moment of truth in my
Skips Tips:
golf swing? The moment of truth is when you have everything in your swing return to the address position. This excludes your hips which should have cleared.Your shoulders are square to the target line, my left side has cleared, and the shaft and hands are slightly in front of the ball, creating a slightly descending blow with irons and fairway woods and a slightly ascending blow with my driver. At this point, its important to be awareof your hands. They should be moving passively, not flicking or opening. The ingredients of a full finish include your right shoulder pointint at the target and nearly all your weight on your left side. To double-check that you are finishing correctly hold your position for five seconds. It'll help balance your swing too!
