“WE’VE GOT THE BLUES” by Kathy Wolfe
No, we’re not sad or downhearted – Tidbits is just bringing you some quick facts about the color blue, everything from royal and powder to indigo, cerulean, azure and cobalt. • Whether or not we realize it, color can affect our emotions, mood and well-being. Blue is the color of calmness, tranquility and relaxation. It’s believed by many that just seeing the color causes the brain to secrete calming hormones. For this reason, many doctors and dentists have their offices painted blue. • Back in 1903, Crayola offered one blue crayon, simply called blue. Cornflower and periwinkle were made available in 1949, aquamarine in 1957 and midnight blue in 1958. According to Crayola, seven out of the top 10 of America’s favorite colors are in the blue family. That plain old blue is number one, with cerulean in the number two spot, midnight at number four, aquamarine at five, followed by periwinkle in slot seven, denim at eight and blizzard blue at 10.

THE BLUES (continued): • The entertainment industry’s Blue Man Group has been performing together since 1987. These anonymous “mute” artists dress in black clothing and wear blue grease paint over latex caps. Their percussive instruments include the electric zither, hammered dulcimer, the “drum wall” (a two-story structure with seven percussion stations) and a mixture of varied PVC pipes. It is their habit not to speak with members of the audience, and if you ask for an autograph, expect a smear of blue paint. • According to folklore, if you dream of the color blue, you will be free from worry or will receive help from an outside source. • The word “blue” has found its way into many terms in the English language. Of course, if you’re feeling blue, you’re unhappy or downcast. Yet, conversely, if blue skies are coming your way, it means that happy times are imminent. If you use blue language, it is characterized by profanity or cursing. Were you born into the nobility or aristocracy? You might be described as a blue-blood. Has something hit you out of the blue? It seemingly came from nowhere at an unexpected time. Someone who’s done a blue-ribbon job has put in a top-notch, first-place performance. If an event is considered rare, it comes along “once in a blue moon.” A true-blue friend has proven himself to be loyal and faithful.

• There are about 700 different species of flowering plants in the Indigofera genus, which are plants that produce indigo dye. The ancients in Tibet and India used this color to make their prayer shawls, as they believed the color strengthened their concentration and spirituality. Most indigo dye used today in the coloring of denim is synthetic. • If you’re eating a Lactarius indigo, you’re munching on an unusual blue-colored mushroom, commonly known as the indigo milk cap. Grown along the U.S. Gulf Coast and in Mexico, it’s an edible mushroom (although there are a very few poisonous varieties) with a cap between 2 and 6 inches (5 and 15 cm) across. Its blue hue disappears as soon as it is cooked, and the mushroom turns a gray color. • The musical form “the blues” had its beginnings in the deep South in African-American communities at the end of the 1800s. The genre originated from spirituals, field songs, shouts, chants and rhythmic dance tunes and followed a specific chord progression, most commonly the “twelve-bar blues” progression. Lyrics typically tell of bad luck, troubles and sorrow. • At the close of World War II, to keep the public interested in Naval Aviation, Chief of Naval Operations Chester Nimitz called for the development of a flight demonstration team. The team performed its Continued on page 7

Mosquitoes Bring Heartworm Season –
Prevention is Key!
Star Rogers Hughes
Cats and dogs can be infected with heartworm disease by the bite from a carrier mosquito. The coyote has become the ‘natural’ reservoir for the disease. Dogs are the primary host for the disease, but cats and other animals can become infected, and the consequences are serious. Indoor cats are just as susceptible as outdoor cats!

The good news is that this disease can be prevented. There is no effective treatment once your cat is infected, so prevention is the key. A safe, monthly topical medication is the best way to protect your cat(s). If you have questions please call our hospital.

The Gem Advisor Garnets
Scott McQueen Red is the color most often connected to this gemstone that is often found in antique jewelry. However, the world of garnets is far more colorful than that just red Spectacular finds, especially in Africa, have enhance the traditional image of the garnet with a number of lovely hues including shades of green, a variety of yellows, a blazing orange and some very nice earth-colored shades. The only color never found in a garnet is blue. This number of garnet hues has enabled this gemstone to continue to be trendy and stylish. While fairly common, the garnets have some rare stones such as star garnets whose color changes depending on whether displayed in artificial or natural light. Garnets are found in several African countries, India, Russia and Central and South America. Skilled hand of cutters all over the world over cut garnets into both classical and designer shapes. If your jewelry features a garnet stone you can be confident that it will last a long time and the brilliance given to it by Nature will never dim. For Advertising Call Tim (303)994-9683 Tidbits Information Tidbits® of Douglas County 7 THE BLUES (continued): first demonstration in June 1946 in Jacksonville, Florida. As they planned an upcoming show in New York City that year, one of the pilots saw a magazine ad for the Blue Angel nightclub there, and from then on the team became the Blue Angels. About 15 million people watch the squadron every year at various air shows, where they reach speeds of up to 700 miles per hour (1,126 km/ hr). Since 1946, more than 460 million spectators have witnessed their performances. The average age of a Blue Angel pilot is 33. • The lyrics of the official song of the U.S. Air Force begin, “Off we go into the wild blue yonder.” Although the music and lyrics were composed in 1939, it didn’t become the official song until 1979. • Blue is the color of mourning in Hong Kong, Mexico and Iran. In China, it’s associated with immortality. To the Jewish people, blue is the symbol of holiness. The United Nations uses a light shade of blue to symbolize peace. The Cherokee Indians of old considered blue the color of failure or disappointment. Their prayers were for the enemy to become blue and “walk in a blue path.” While blue is connected to baby boys in the Western Hemisphere, in China, blue is for baby girls. • National Public Radio has included the 1956 hit “Blue Suede Shoes” in its list of the 100 most important American musical works. Composed by Carl Perkins, it’s been called the first true rock and roll hit. While playing a gig in December 1955, Perkins overheard one of the dancers beg his girlfriend, “Don’t step on my suedes!” Perkins noticed the shoes were blue, and one already had a scuff mark. He ran home and jotted down lyrics on an empty potato bag. Two months later it was No. 1 on the charts. • The very dark shade of navy blue took its name from the uniform worn by British Royal Navy officers beginning in 1748. Prior to 1840, the color was referred to as “marine blue,” and the first recorded use of “navy blue” was that year. • In the world of politics, U.S. states that favor Democratic candidates are called “blue states,” with red as the color for Republican states. A group of conservative Democrats in the U.S. Congress is known as the Blue Dog Coalition. • Mosquitoes are attracted to the color blue twice as much as any other. Similarly, honeybees like blue flowers the best. OVERCOMING THE ODDS:
VINCE PAPALE
Young boys dream of playing pro football in the NFL, but the odds are pretty slim for most. If you’ve seen the 2006 film “Invincible,” starring Mark Wahlberg, you’re familiar with the story of Vince Papale and how he achieved an amazing dream. Let’s see how this young man rose to football fame after overcoming odds that have been described as “one in a gazillion.” • When Vince Papale earned an athletic scholarship to Philadelphia’s St. Joseph’s College, it was for track and field, not football. The college didn’t even have a football team! League, a league that folded in 1975. In 1976, Papale was teaching accounting, business and economics at his old high school, coaching the school’s junior varsity football team, and working a second part-time job as a bartender, all the while attending classes to earn his master’s degree. • At a 1976 press conference, the Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach Dick Vermeil invited locals to open workouts and tryouts for the team. The memory of a quote from his high school coach and mentor, “Happy are those who dream dreams and are willing to pay the price to make those dreams come true,” along with the urging of friends, convinced Papale, a long-time Eagles fan, to give it a shot. It was a decision that would change his life. • At the workout, Papale ran the 40-yard dash in world-class time, which earned the attention of the head coach. He was offered a tryout and a chance to work out with the team. Hours of hard work paid off when Papale was awarded a place on the Eagles and, at age 30, became the oldest rookie in the history of the NFL (excluding kickers) to play without ever having played a minute of college football. • Papale became a team captain of the Eagles, a position he held for all four years of his professional career. In 1978, as the result of his many charitable activities, he was voted “Man of the Year” by his teammates.

Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Investing Beyond Shortterm CDs Many people depend on certificates of deposit (CDs) to provide extra income. Yet CD rates have been fairly low for a while. In recent months, in fact, one-year CDs were Cindy Rose paying about 0.5%, two-year CDs topped out at around 1%, and fiveyear CDs paid in the 2% to 2. 3% range. Those rates are scanty enough, but they can seem even lower in an economic environment marked by rising food and gas prices. Before you consider alternatives, keep in mind that CDs still offer a key advantage: safety of principal. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) typically insures CDs up to $250,000. And since CDs are relatively short-term in nature, you don’t have to worry about locking away that money for long periods of time. So there can be a place for CDs in the fixed-income portion of your portfolio. However, during times such as these, you might consider looking at additional options, keeping in mind that, when seeking greater income, you’ll likely be taking on more risk. Let’s consider a few alternatives: Fixed annuities — Many people buy fixed annuities to supplement their retirement income. But most annuities also allow you to take up to 10% of your account value each year without penalty. Plus, the interest rate you receive on a fixed annuity may be more competitive than that currently paid by a CD. Keep in mind, though, that annuities are not backed by FDIC insurance, and any guarantees are backed solely by the paying ability of the insurance company. Additionally, early or excessive withdrawals may be subject to penalties. If you believe a fixed annuity might be appropriate for your situation, speak with your financial advisor. Bond ladders — If appropriate for your situation, you can potentially gain extra income through a strategy known as a bond “ladder.” To build a ladder, you buy several bonds with varying maturities — short-, intermediate- and longterm. Once you’ve constructed your ladder, you could gain some advantage in various interest rate environments. When market rates are low, you’ll still have your longer-term bonds earning higher interest rates. And when market rates rise, you can reinvest your maturing shortterm bonds at the higher rates. But if you need income in addition to your regular interest payments, you can get it from the maturing bonds. Unlike CDs, however, bonds are not covered by FDIC insurance and are subject to credit risks. Bonds are also subject to interest rate risk: When interest rates rise, bond prices generally fall, and you may lose some or all of your principal if you sell your bond prior to maturity. But by holding your bonds until maturity, you can avoid loss of principal, assuming the issuer doesn’t default. Dividend-paying stocks — Some companies have paid — and increased — their stock dividends for many years now. If you don’t need the dividends to boost your cash flow, you can reinvest them to help boost your ownership stake. However, companies can reduce or discontinue their dividends at any time, and since stock prices fluctuate, you risk losing some or all of your principal. By exploring alternatives to short-term CDs, you may find other appropriate investments that may better position you to reach your financial goals — so look around to see what’s available in the financial marketplace.

Victim or Victor? 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (NJK) We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed—Do you have to get down just because something happens to you and you have no idea what or why this thing happened? The devil prays on darkness, he prays on ignorance and he will come to you and say, well why did this happen, or why did that happen? And we are quick to say, “Well, I don’t know?” And he will say yeah that’s right you don’t know, and what about this and what about that, until he gets you to the place that you begin to question everything that happens to you. This is one of the devils favorite phrases! And he wants you to get caught up in it for your own life, where you question everything that happens. He wants you in that arena where you begin to question and doubt everything, no strength, no faith, no endurance, and you just give up. This is what the devil tried to do with Jesus, remember when Jesus over turned the money tables and chased all the merchants out of the temple they came to him and said, “By what authority are you doing all these things?” And the devil wanted to make Him start to doubt, but Jesus didn’t play along with his game, what did He do? He said to the devil, Let me ask you a question. And you can do the same thing, when he comes to you with doubt and begins to put questions in your mind, just turn it around and put the questions back in his lap. Let me ask you a question Mr. Devil, what about the baptism of John? Immediately all the eyes of the people shifted from Jesus to the religious leaders, Yeah what about that? Just like that the whole thing shifted and they could feel the pressure of the people around them well…we can’t tell, then Jesus said, well I can’t tell you either. Oh the wisdom of God is so good!!!! But understand the devil is big on asking you questions and praying on ignorance, and his favorite question to all of us is, “What are you going to do?” What are you going to do?”But think about this for a moment, why not turn the questions back on him. Think about the worst case scenarios for your life, you don’t get your money, you don’t get you healing, worst case scenario, you die, well since your saved you are going to heaven right? You don’t have any problems in this life with the exception of him right? What about you devil? Did you know that today people all over the world found out about Jesus and they got saved, what about you? People all over the world got filled with the Holy Spirit today and now they have power from upon high to be a witness, what about you devil? About this time, he is gone!
