KENTUCKY DERBY by Kathy Wolfe
And they’re off! Every year, the first Saturday in May marks “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” the annual Kentucky Derby. Tidbits offers some fascinating facts about the “Run for the Roses,” a contest for threeyear-old thoroughbred horses held every year since 1875. • Construction on the racetrack now known as Churchill Downs was begun in Louisville, Kentucky in 1874. It was the brainstorm of Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., the grandson of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Clark leased 80 acres of land from his uncles John and Henry Churchill, and raised $32,000 for constructions costs by selling membership subscriptions to the track for $100 each.

• The first Kentucky Derby was held in May of 1875 before a crowd of 10,000 spectators. Fifteen three-year-old thoroughbreds pounded around the track and the contest was won by a chestnut named Aristides. The original race was 1.5 miles (2.41 km), compared to today’s 1.25 miles (2.01 km). Aristides accomplished the distance in just under 2:38. In 1896 it was determined that 1.5 miles was too long a distance for three-year-old horses so early in the spring, and the race length was shortened. turn the page for more!

KENTUCKY DERBY (continued): • When race fans showed up for the 1895 event, they were met by a brand-new grandstand featuring the Twin Spires. A 24-year-old draftsman designed the Spires, which have become a familiar landmark to the Derby crowd. • At a party hosted by a socialite following the 1883 Derby, all the ladies were presented with roses. Track founder Meriwether Lewis Clark was in attendance and it’s believed he conceived the idea of declaring the rose the race’s official flower from that experience. But it wasn’t until 1896 that a bouquet of pink and white roses was first presented to the winner, and it was 1932 before the garland of roses we see today was introduced. The term “Run for the Roses” was coined by a sports columnist in 1925. The blanket of roses bestowed upon the owner of the winning horse is composed of more than 500 red roses sewn onto a green satin backing. In addition, the jockey receives 60 long-stemmed roses wrapped in 10 yards of ribbon. Owners frequently have the garland of roses freeze-dried to preserve it, and some even have a flower dipped in silver in commemoration of the win. • The two-minute mark has only been broken three times in Derby history, the first time in 1973 by the famed Secretariat. Nicknamed “Big Red,” the chestnut finished the course in 1:59.40, a record that still holds today as the fastest time ever. The second horse to finish in under two minutes was just a length and a half behind Secretariat. Sham, who was Secretariat’s dark brown halfcousin, had hit his face on the starting gate and knocked out a tooth. Although he bled severely throughout the race, Sham came in about onefifth of a second behind the winner. The Derby was without an under-two-minute winner until 2001 when Monarchos finished in 1:59.97. • During the early 1900’s, owners of Derby-winning horses began sending their thoroughbreds to Maryland’s Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes in New York. Although it wasn’t officially called the “Triple Crown” until 1930, the first winner of all three races was in 1919, a chestnut named Sir Barton. There have only been 11 Triple Crown winners, including Secretariat, who took the prize after a 25-year drought, setting records in all three races. There were back-to-back Triple Crown winners in 1977 (Seattle Slew) and Affirmed in 1978. There hasn’t been one since. • On those occasions when two or more horses are in a dead heat and it’s impossible to see which crossed the line first, a “photo finish” is needed to determine the winner. The first time this was used at the Kentucky Derby was in 1947, when a Continued on page 8

Cat Q & A Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc
Cure Hyperthyroidism – 131I “Charlie” is a friendly, fifteen year old, red tabby that just recently started caterwauling at night, played non-stop most of his waking moments, and had a ravenous appetite. Even with his increase in eating (2x’s normal) “Charlie” has actually lost a pound in the last month. Cats that have these signs should be blood tested for hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is usually caused by a benign tumor (99%) of the thyroid gland that produces too much thyroid hormone – L-thyroxine (T4). Metabolism is increased so increased calories are needed to run the body. At a certain point “Charlie” was unable to eat enough calories to meet his metabolic needs and he began to lose weight.
DRILLSEEDING SPRING SEEDING
Hyperthyroidism is the most common endocrine disease in the cat, followed by diabetes. Affected cats commonly have enlarged thyroid nodules in their ventral neck that can be easily palpated. A T4 and free T4 ED blood tests are use to confirm the disease. Early disease sometimes is difficult to define and serial testing every 3 months is necessary.

Hyperthyroidism is a whole body disease. It causes high blood pressure (hypertension), toxic effects from too much thyroid hormone (poisoning), heart changes (hypertrophy), destruction of the kidneys (uremic poisoning and hypertension), hormonal abnormalities (parathyroid glands, pituitary, pancreas, and liver dysfunction), and personality disorders (obsessive compulsive behaviors, vocalizing, and constant play) are a some of many problems hyperthyroid cats present with. Other diseases that are confused with hyperthyroidism are liver disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, GI lymphoma, underlying viral diseases (FeLV/FIV), and any chronic disability that causes depressed metabolism. The “gold standard” of treatment in humans and cats is nuclear medicine – radio-iodine therapy (I-131). Other therapies such as surgery or medication are less effective and have many side-effects. Senior cats treated with I-131 usually live longer (an average of 4-5 years) whereas cats on medication live an average of 2 years or less. I-131 therapy in the long run is very cost effective and the disease is cured. The cure word is rarely used in human or veterinary medicine when spoken in connection with chronic disease. The cure rate is >96% on the first treatment and approaches 100% in the cats that need a rare second treatment. I-131 treatment for hyperthyroidism zaps the abnormal tumor cells and leaves good tissue behind. I-131 is the prototype therapy for all disease, killing the bad and leaving the good without side-effects. Cat Specialist has been a leader in I-131 therapy. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. Zoisite
Scott McQueen
Zoisite is named after the Slovene scientist Baron Sigmund Zois von Edelstein. He was the first to realize that this mineral, first discovered in the Saualpe Mountains, a rolling mountain range in the Alps, could be fashioned into gemstones and other forms. Zoisite is often carved, used for jewelry, usually in relatively large pieces, also spheres, eggs, hearts, pyramids, and even palm stones. The green and pink zoisites have been used as jade substitutes. Tanzanite, a form of zoisite, is widely used as a gemstone. At least until after the September 11, 2001 attacks when a rumor was circulated throughout the gemstone marketplace that sales of tanzanite had helped fund Osam bin Laden and the Al-Quaeda network. As a result, several jewelers, especially in the United States, imposed a boycott on further imports of the gem, and some of them even removed tanzanite-bearing jewelry from their active inventories. Eventually the U.S. State Department declared that there was no evidence to support the rumor so most jewelers lifted the boycott. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta
303.805.9543
Q: For a recent do-it-yourself project, I replaced the baseboard along two walls of the kids’ playroom with a length of twoby-four wood. The kids tend to ram their toys into the base of the wall and this dented and marred the original baseboard and even damaged the drywall behind it. I removed the original baseboard. I also patched the damaged sections of drywall by cutting them away and replacing with new pieces of drywall held in place with wooden strips behind the drywall. This also helped to reinforce the base of the wall. Next, at my home-improvement store, I had two pieces of 2-by-4 cut to the length of each wall’s base. I left a quarterinch off each end because I decided to leave the baseboard in place on the other walls. There was one error here: I had to recut one piece of wood because I forgot the two pieces would intersect at one corner. But it was not too difficult to saw off a couple of inches from one end. I attached the new “bumper boards” to the wall studs. To make it easier, I located and marked the studs first, then pre-drilled the boards. Once the boards were in place, I attached them to the studs using 4-inch wood screws, countersunk the screw heads slightly and covered with wood putty to hide them from the kids. Finally, I painted the new boards. The plain wood tended to soak up paint, so I had to put on two coats of primer first. Then I painted them with a “kid-resistant” paint (available at any paint store) with an eggshell finish that is easier to wipe clean. Once the kids are grown, I will likely replace the bumper boards with regular baseboard. You can save the old baseboard, but mine is too damaged, so I plan to scrap it and start fresh. Hope your readers can benefit from my experience! -Sam G., Baltimore A: That sounds like a great fix for the playroom. Thanks for sharing! Readers, to remove baseboard without damaging the drywall beneath or marring the paint, first run a box cutter or a small putty knife along the top of the baseboard to separate paint, glue or other material from the wall. Next, using a nail set (or a sturdy nail) and a hammer, locate the larger anchoring nails along the baseboard, place the nail set against the nail head, and hammer a few times. This will push the baseboard back slightly, creating a gap. Use a small prybar to pull the board away from the wall. To protect the wall, hold a piece of scrap wood against the wall and lean the prybar against it. Once the baseboard pulls away, you can either remove the finishing nails from the drywall or pound them in, so they don’t stick out. Before storing or tossing the old baseboard, remove nails from it or hammer them to the side to keep others from getting injured. HOME TIP: Rub beeswax or bar soap onto the threads of a wood screw, and it will be easier to screw into solid wood boards or studs.

Decks Time to Repair or Replace With summer & BBQ’s coming up we all want to get out & enjoy our decks. As always the bane of us enjoying our yards in the summer is the yard work that comes with it. Our decks are no different – wooden structures are especially susceptible to deterioration weakening over time due to age & weather. Every summer your deck should be inspected for loose planks, railings & stairs, these are the most common issues that cause injury. All which can easily be avoided by a simple inspection. Many simply need sealed & maybe put a few screws into a decking plank that has become loose, while others have aged to the point where they are no longer safe. The difference between needing some TLC & a demolition crew can be hard to discern. If you have this question, do yourself a favor & call a professional contractor for an evaluation & estimate. Most contractors will not charge for this service & a little investment of your time is worth the peace of mind. At QCI Structural Solutions we pride ourselves on delivering the best product & experience possible to our clients & would be more than happy to help you with all of your construction & home refurbish needs whether it be a deck, kitchen, bathroom, new windows & doors, siding, painting or even a man-cave. Along with the juleps, a thick stew called Burgoo is traditionally served, a concoction of a mixture of meats, including pork, beef, chicken, and mutton, along with vegetables and barbecue sauce. • In 1932, an 18-year-old jockey named Eugene James rode Burgoo King to victory at both the Derby and the Preakness. Sadly, just a year later, the young athlete drowned in Lake Michigan. • The 1944 Derby winner was named Pensive and the victor in 1949 was Ponder. What was unusual about these two steeds? Pensive was the sire of Ponder and both horses won the Derby with the exact same time, 2:04.20. Ponder went on to sire the 1956 Derby winner, Needles. • Until 2005, only the first four finishers received a share of the Derby’s purse money. The rules were then changed to award a potion to the fifth-place winner as well. • The Derby has had a number of notable firsts. It was broadcast live on the radio for the first time in 1925, with the first national television coverage occurring in 1952. The size of the purse topped the $100,000 mark for the first time in 1954. (This year, the purse will be $2,180,000, with $1,240,000 of that amount awarded to the winner.) In 1968, Dancer’s Image became the first winner to be disqualified after traces of drugs were found in its system. The Derby’s first woman jockey was Diane Crump who rode Phantom in 1970. Diane came in 15th out of 17. Jockeys were allowed to wear advertising logos on their silks for the first time in 2004.

• Three in 10 workers entering the workforce today will become disabled before retiring, according to the Social Security Administration. • At age 42, you are four times more likely to become seriously disabled than to die during your working years, according to National Underwriter Life & Health. • Disability causes nearly 50% of all mortgage foreclosures, according to Health Affairs, a health policy research journal.
Given these statistics, it’s not surprising that the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education (LIFE) sponsors Disability Insurance Awareness Month to encourage Americans to address their disability income needs. Here’s the bottom line: You can be really good at budgeting your money and you can be a disciplined long-term investor — but unless you’ve protected at least a reasonable percentage of your income, your whole financial strategy is incomplete. And all your goals, such as a comfortable retirement, could be jeopardized.
Consequently, you might need to think about purchasing an individual disability insurance policy. Here are some tips:

ability Insurance Awareness Month. And you might agree that such a month is useful, when you consider the following:
Of course, you may not be totally unfamiliar with disability income insurance; if you work for a large employer, a group disability policy may be part of your employee benefits package. If so, you should certainly accept the coverage, which may be offered to you free, or at minimal cost. However, this coverage might be inadequate to replace the income needed to allow your family to maintain its lifestyle without dipping into your investments.

Look for a policy that is “non-cancellable” until you reach age 65. When you purchase a non-cancellable policy, your policy premiums can’t be changed, provided you pay them on time. Pick the right waiting period. Typically, disability insurance policies don’t start paying benefits immediately; there’s usually a waiting (or “elimination”) period ranging from 30 days to two years. Obviously, a shorter waiting period is more desirable, but it’s probably also going to be more expensive. You may be able to give yourself the flexibility of choosing the longer waiting period if you have created an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, kept in a liquid account that offers significant preservation of principal. Avoid overly restrictive policies. You may want to avoid an "accident-only" policy or one with a limited benefit term (five and 10 years are common). These policies may be cheaper, but they don’t cover either a disabling illness or the entirety of your working life. Consider adding appropriate “riders.” It will likely add to the cost of your policy, but a cost-of-living rider will help protect your future benefits from the effects of inflation. You also might want to add a future income options (FIO) rider, which provides you with the ability to purchase additional coverage in the future with no further medical underwriting. STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver ¥ It was French Enlightenment author Voltaire who made the following sage observation: “Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.” ¥ If you’re like the average American, you laugh 15 times every day. ¥ Have you ever heard of an artist by the name of John Banvard? You’re to be forgiven if the name is unfamiliar; few people these days remember him. In the mid-19th century, though, he was something of a phenomenon. In 1840, the then-25-year-old man set off on a skiff down the Mississippi River. He spent more than a year on the river, sketching steadily along the way. After he completed the voyage, he spent another five years painting his “Panorama of the Mississippi,” an ambitious work that was 12 feet wide and more than 3 miles long. When completed, the painting was mounted on two upright revolving cylinders and displayed for the paying public throughout the U.S. and Europe, earning him $200,000 along the way.

¥ In the 1960s, the miniskirt was still controversial. Both the Vatican City and Disneyland refused entrance to women wearing the short skirts. ¥ If you’re a fan of the TV series “Dr. Who,” you probably know that the title character, a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, has two hearts. This may seem like science fiction (and, of course, it is), but it’s not unknown for a human to be born with two hearts. One such example was Giuseppe de Mai, born in Italy in the 19th century. The condition is rare, though; so rare, in fact, that the London Academy of Medicine offered de Mai $15,000 under the condition that it receive his body after his death. *** Thought for the Day: “Women are like elephants to me. ¥ On May 24, 1844, in a demonstration witnessed by members of Congress, American inventor Samuel F.B. Morse dispatches a telegraph message from the U.S. Capitol to a railroad station in Baltimore. The message -- “What Hath God Wrought?” -- was telegraphed back to the Capitol a moment later. ¥ On May 22, 1859, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of master sleuth Sherlock Holmes, is born in Scotland. His first Sherlock Holmes story, “A Study in Scarlet,” was published in Beeton’s Christmas Annual in 1887. ¥ On May 25, 1927, Robert Ludlum, author of 25 thrillers, is born in New York City. Although he never earned a reputation as a masterful prose stylist, his suspenseful stories such as “The Bourne Identity” gripped a wide readership. As a critic for The Washington Post noted about one Ludlum novel: “It’s a lousy book. So I stayed up until 3 a.m. to finish it.” ¥ On May 23, 1934, notorious criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are shot to death by Texas and Louisiana state police while driving a stolen car near Sailes, La. All told, the Barrow Gang was believed responsible for the deaths of 13 people, including nine police officers. ¥ On May 26, 1940, President Franklin Roosevelt makes a radio appeal for the support of the Red Cross. Belgian and French civilians were “running from their homes to escape bombs and shells and machine gunning, without shelter, and almost wholly without food,” broadcast FDR. ¥ On May 20, 1956, the United States conducts the first airborne test of an improved hydrogen bomb, dropping it from a plane over the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. Observers said that the fireball caused by the explosion measured at least 4 miles in diameter and was brighter than the light from 500 suns. ¥ On May 21, 1978, 21-year-old rookie golfer Nancy Lopez defeats her childhood hero, JoAnne Carner, on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the Coca-Cola-Classic in Jamesburg, N.J. The next year Lopez beat out 44-year-old Mickey Wright, to repeat as Coca-Cola champion.
