• The twin towers of New York City’s World Trade Center were completed in 1972 and became the world’s tallest buildings, surpassing the Empire State Building, the record-holder for the previous 40 years. The towers didn’t hold on to the honor for very long, as Chicago’s Sears Tower outdid them in 1973.

• America celebrated its 200 birthday in 1976, commemorating the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Many of the festivities were centered in Philadelphia, the nation’s first capital and home of the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. The city’s celebrations were tragically marred, however, by an epidemic of a respiratory disease that struck 231 people, killing 34. Because most of the dead were members of the American Legion attending a convention, the ailment was dubbed Legionnaire’s Disease. It was later identified as the result of a bacteria found in the air-conditioning pipes of the Bellevue Stratford Hotel. The air conditioning was quickly replaced, but the damage had been done to the hotel’s reputation, and it went bankrupt shortly afterward. Turn the page for more! th

• Does the name Louise Brown ring a bell? She was a five-pound, 12-ounce baby girl delivered in July 1978, the world’s first test-tube baby, born as a result of the experimental in vitro fertilization process. Although called a test-tube baby, her conception actually took place in a petri dish. Brown became a mother herself in 2006.

• The big news of 1977 was the death of Elvis Presley, declared by the medical examiner as the result of “coronary arrhythmia.” Over the eight months prior to the King’s death, his physician had prescribed more than 10,000 doses of sedatives, amphetamines and narcotics. The autopsy revealed 14 different drugs in Presley’s system at the time of his death. As thousands lined up outside Graceland’s gates during the funeral, a car swerved into a group of fans, killing two. More than 80,000 people lined the procession route to his Forest Hill Cemetery burial site. • In 1972, burglars broke into the Democratic Party’s National Committee office at the Watergate Hotel. In the coming months it was revealed that President Richard Nixon was involved in covering up the burglary and possessed a number of stolen tapes. When he refused to surrender the tapes, a judge ordered the chief executive to hand them over. In 1974, impeachment proceedings were initiated against the president. In August of that year, Nixon resigned and Gerald Ford became president. A month later, Ford issued a full pardon to Nixon for “all offenses against the United States.” • What were folks wearing in the 1970s? Bellbottomed pants paired with either a turtleneck sweater or flower-print shirt was a popular look. After the premiere of the movie “Saturday Night Fever” in 1977, John Travolta’s three-piece suit and wide-collared shirt inspired the disco fashion. Cat Q & A Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc

When a Cough is a ‘True’ Cough in a Cat Cats vomit, retch, gag, sneeze, have nasal congestion, trouble breathing, reverse sneeze but rarely do they have a ‘true’ cough. Upper respiratory infections are the most common respiratory signs seen: showing eye discharge, nasal discharge, mouth ulcers, open mouth breathing, decreased appetite and fever. Vomiting and retching related to diet/gastrointestinal illness can be confused with respiratory problems. Mixed signs are common so cats may show many different clinical presentations. The top two causes of cough in Colorado are Asthma/ Bronchitis Complex and Heartworm Disease.

The Buddy Center Needs Your Help

Asthma/Bronchitis Complex is an allergic lung disease that causes constriction of the bronchial tree. Diagnosis in the cat is made by clinical exam, chest x-rays, tracheal wash/cytology and response to therapy. Coughing is the primary clinical sign followed by an expiratory dyspnea, crackles and wheezing. Secondary cigarette smoke is commonly noted in the history of asthmatic patients. Heartworm Disease is on the rise in Colorado. The dog and the coyote are the reservoir for the infection. The mosquito bites an infected dog/coyote; the mosquito becomes infected; and then it bites another animal (dog, cat, bear, etc.); and the infective larva develops in the host animal; and finally the larva develops into an adult heartworm. Cats usually only have 1-3 worms living in the heart or the vessels of the lung. Diagnosis is made with a combination of blood tests, clinical signs, chest radiographs and chest ultrasounds. Even with this small number of worms many cats to die suddenly. There is no effective treatment once the worms are present except supportive care and the control of secondary side-effects due to the disease. Prevention is the only way to protect your cat from heartworm disease! Other less common causes of cough in the cat are: heart disease (uncommon), tracheobronchial collapse (rare), grass awns/foreign bodies/fumes/smoke (can be seen), cancer (can be seen), infectious (less common), immune (can be seen) and laryngitis (less common).

Moonstone

Scott McQueen

Moonstone, one of June’s birthstones (along with Alexandrite and Pearl), has a mysterious shimmer like that of a bright summer moon. A lovely moonstone gem will play with the light and shadows using the discreet colors of beige-brown, green, orange, brown or blue making it an ideal stone for jewelry. Some call it a “lover’s stone” because it brings to mind soft, tender feelings and transmits the true joy of love. It is also believed that your intuition and wisdom are increased when you wear a moonstone. In India moonstones are regarded as “dream stones” that will bring the wearer delightful visions at night. In Arabic countries women are known to wear moonstones sewn into their garments and out of sight, for in their cultures the moonstone is a symbol of fertility. Moonstones with a bluish shimmer come from Sri Lanka. Since they are becoming more rare as the years go by, their prices are always increasing. Other less rare Moonstones are found in the USA, Brazil, Australia, Myanmar and Madagascar. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

Contractor Fraud

If a problem crops up during or after the repair job, try to resolve the issue with the contractor first. Reputable contractors will try to make it right. If you can’t resolve the problem or can’t find the contractor, you can lodge a complaint with the BBB or contact your state or city’s consumer protection department.

Q: I’d like to hire a contractor to make some repairs to my garage, but I hear a lot of stories these days about handymen who overcharge, don’t do the work promised or otherwise cheat customers. How can I make sure I get what I pay for? -- Clarence T., Philadelphia A: There are several things you can do to make sure a contractor is legitimate, that the work will be done on time and to your satisfaction, and that unpleasant surprises won’t crop up later. Here are a few tips to keep in mind: --Take your time deciding: Unless the repair is an emergency, you have the luxury of getting more than one estimate from more than one contractor. Get at least three quotes before deciding. --Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints were lodged against the contractor and how the contractor responded to those complaints. --Ask the contractor if you can contact past customers about his work. --Ask for the contractor’s license, as well as proof of workers compensation insurance. --Get everything in writing: A statement of when the work will begin and end, how much materials will cost and what materials will be used, how much labor is involved and what that will cost, whether permits will be required, and whether the work must meet building codes. --Do not allow work to begin until you have signed a contract you both agree on. --Never pay in advance, and do not pay in cash: write a check or use a credit card instead. --Insist on inspecting all work yourself (or have a

• At the theaters we were viewing “The Godfather,” “Rocky” and “Dirty Harry.” We were scared out of our seats by “The Exorcist,” “Jaws” and “Carrie” and laughed uproariously at “Animal House,” “Young Frankenstein” and “Monty Python.” George Lucas’ career took off with “American Graffiti” in 1973, followed by “Star Wars” in 1977, which quickly became the highest-grossing film of all time, an honor it maintained for the next five years.

• On television, our favorite Westerns “Gunsmoke” and “The Virginian” were phased out, as were sitcoms “Bewitched” and “I Dream of Jeannie.” The Sci-Fi era was ushered in with hits such as “The Six-Million Dollar Man,” “The Bionic Woman” and “Battlestar Galactica.” The controversial sitcom “All in the Family” had its run from 1971 to 1979, featuring the fictional Archie Bunker’s frequently inappropriate remarks about religious, political and social issues of the day. Master, Academy of General Dentistry Q. How did we arrive at today’s modern tooth cleaning products? A. There is quite a long history of various dental “tools”. Q. A.

How long have we had toothbrushes? Longer than most of us can remember. The toothbrush dates back to the Stone Age, when small twigs or sticks were mashed together to create a broader surface for cleaning around the teeth. The Chinese invented the first bristle toothbrush – in the 1490’s. Europe adopted the bristle toothbrush in the 17th century, and American colonial dentists encouraged its use.

In 1880 the first electric toothbrush appeared, but was not very effective. The Swiss invented the first effective electric toothbrush right after World War II ended. In 1961 the first cordless electric toothbrush was marketed and soon became popular. Today we have a nearly-unlimited variety styles, colors, sizes, and designs of toothbrushes.

Q.

When is my toothbrush worn out? Y o u r toothbrush has “had it” Cindy Rose when the bristles point every which way. Change your toothbrush every three months, before it gets to “every which way”.

Q. Q.

What about toothpaste? Early civilizations concocted various powders used to clean teeth. Ingredients included powdered fruit, ground up or burnt shells, sometimes mixed with honey and dried flowers. Other, less appetizing concoctions added rabbit heads, mice, lizard livers, and urine. (At least give them credit for being creative!) Sadly, many of these early toothpastes were highly abrasive or corrosive, which dissolved tooth anamel.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver It was British mathematician, philosopher and social critic Bertrand Russell who made the following sage observation: “Every advance in civilization has been denounced as unnatural while it was recent.” If you’re like most adults, you have approximately 1,000 hairs per square inch of your scalp. That might seem like a lot, but consider the otter: Its 1 million hairs per square inch of skin make it the owner of the densest fur in the world.

All your protection under one roof.

Before the 19th century, it was declasse to wear clothing with pockets. All the well-dressed members of the upper classes had servants to carry things for them. The next time you’re out for a walk in the country, kneel down and scoop up a cupful of soil. You might be surprised to learn that that single cup of dirt could hold more bacteria than there are people on the planet. Those who study such things say that more Frisbeetype discs are sold every year in the U.S. than footballs, baseballs and basketballs combined. People sometimes fight over the silliest things. Countries, too. For example, in 1925, Greece and Bulgaria were at war for 10 days, all because of a dog. Evidently, tensions were high in October of that year, when a Greek soldier’s dog ran away from him -- across the border. The soldier chased his dog into Bulgaria, where he was shot dead by a sentry. In retaliation, the Greek army invaded, and the League of Nations had to step in to restore order to the region. ¥ There is a species of frog found in Indonesia that breathes entirely through its skin; it has no lungs at all. *** Thought for the Day: “Everyone, in some small sacred sanctuary of the self, is nuts.” -- Leo Rosten

Toothpaste as we know it first came to market in the 1800’s. These early “modern” toothpastes included soap and chalk powders. The first toothpaste tube came on the scene in 1892. In 1956 Proctor and Gamble developed “Crest” toothpaste, which added flouride to fight cavities. Toothpicks? Toothpicks have been around for a long, long time. Ancient drawings and texts mention small pointed devices used to clean food from the teeth. Some were carved from twigs or made from silver, gold, bronze or other available metals. Dentistry An Illustrated History states: “In one regard at least, upper-class Romans outdid hygieneconscious people today: When guests were invited to dinner, they were provided not only with spoons and knives, but also with elaborately decorated toothpicks of metal, often of gold, which they took home with them. And it was considered quite proper to pick the teeth between each course of the meal!” (Now don’t you wish you had a box of those gold toothpicks?)

Mother’s Day as an opportunity to consider ways to help your children at various stages of their lives. So, let’s take a look at steps you can take: When Your Children Are Young

Cindy Rose

Teach them to be savers — Encourage young children to put away part of their allowance, or any money they receive for household jobs, in a savings account. Offer to match their contributions dollar for dollar.

Help them become investors — Consider giving your children a few shares of stock in companies with which they are familiar. By following the movements of their stocks with them, you can explain how the markets work and how increasing share ownership is one key to helping build wealth.

Encourage IRA contributions — An Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is a great retirement savings vehicle. As long as your children have earned income, they can contribute to an IRA, so you may want to help them “max out” on their contributions each year. While you can’t directly contribute to a child’s IRA, you can write a check to your child and encourage him or her to use it for funding an IRA.

Contribute to a college savings plan — One of the best things you can do to boost your children’s chances of success in life is to help them go to college. You’ve got several good college-savings vehicles available, such as a 529 plans, Coverdell Education Savings Accounts and custodial accounts. Your financial advisor can help you choose the vehicle that suits your needs and objectives. When Your Children Enter the Working World

Make long-term care arrangements — If you needed long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay, and you had inadequate financial preparations, the burden could fall on your children. Now is the time to consult with your financial advisor to begin preparing for possible long-term care costs. When Your Children Reach Middle Age Communicate your financial situation and estate plans — Don’t leave adult children in the dark as to your financial information. Share everything you can about how much you own, where you keep your assets and how you plan to eventually distribute them. By clearly communicating your situation and wishes now, you can avoid major problems later. Create a durable power of attorney — By creating a durable power of attorney, you can appoint another person, such as an adult child, to conduct your business and financial affairs if you become physically or mentally incapacitated. Such a move can help reduce stress your children may be feeling, while allowing them to make moves that can help preserve your finances. Mother’s Day commemorates the special bond that mothers have with their children. By following the above suggestions, you can help strengthen that bond throughout your lifetime.

A colorful legend grew up around the story of Kidd, including reports of lost buried treasure. Hydrocephalus... Most people haven’t heard of the word, find it hard to pronounce and don’t know the devastation of this silent disease. Hydrocephalus is a life changing, life threatening condition. I’ve waited twenty-nine years, but I can’t wait any longer for someone to find a cure…I have to be part of the cure. We need to raise awareness of hydrocephalus for Jessi… and Jordan, and Jenn and the one million other Americans living with this disease. I invite you to read the stories in the coming weeks of those living each day with hydrocephalus and join the Hydrocephalus Association in its fight against this extremely difficult and little understood condition. On May 26, 1897, horror writer Bram Stoker’s classic vampire tale, “Dracula,” is first offered for sale in London. Through fictional journal entries and letters written by the novel’s principal characters, “Dracula” tells the story of a Transylvanian vampire and his English victims. On May 24, 1917, after losing 373 Allied and neutral ships in one month because of attacks by German Uboat submarines, the British Royal Navy introduces a convoy system, whereby all merchant ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean would travel in groups under the protection of the British navy. On May 27, 1963, Bob Dylan releases his second album, “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan,” which included future hits “Blowin’ In the Wind,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall.” On May 25, 1977, the communist government of China lifts its decade-old ban on the writings of William Shakespeare. Mao Tse-Tung’s 1966 revolution had banned any cultural work -- music, literature, film or theater -- that did not have the required ideological content. By the early 1970s China was desperate for new sources of trade, and the revolution was declared ended.

She doesn't know which one to get, so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter. The clerk was standing behind the counter wearing dark shades. She says to him, "Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me anything about this Rod and reel?" He says, ?"Ma'am, I'm completely blind; but if you'll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything from the sound it makes." She doesn't believe him but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, "That's a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-LB. Test line. It's a good all-around combination, and it's on sale this week for only $20.00." She says, "It's amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I'll take it!" As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. "Oh, that sounds like a Master Card," he says. She bends down to pick it up and accidentally farts. At first she is really embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind clerk could tell it was her who tooted. Being blind, he wouldn't know that she was the only person around? The man rings up the sale and says, "That'll be $34.50 please." The woman is totally confused by this and asks, "Didn't you tell me the rod and reel were on sale for $20.00? How did you get $34.50?" He replies, "Yes, ma'am. The rod and reel is $20.00, but the Duck Call is $11.00, and the Catfish Bait is $3.50." She paid it and left without saying a word.
