Through their discoveries, research and inventions, scientists from across the globe have made countless improvements to education, medicine, physics, chemistry and many other fields. Learn more about some of the most prominent scientists from around the world. • One of the most recognized figures in history, German-born Albert Einstein was born with an unyielding curiosity and thirst for knowledge. The Nobel Prize winner is credited with unlocking secrets of the universe, and is perhaps most famous for his Theory of Relativity research. • Well ahead of his time, Austrian scientist Gregor Mendel mastered genetics and discovered how traits are inherited, though it took 34 years for the science world to recognize his genius. Initially his ideas were written off as ludicrous. • Sir Isaac Newton, regarded as the pioneer of modern physical science, made many scientific advances in the fields of natural science, mathematics, astronomy, mechanics and chemistry. Credited with discovering the force of gravity, he is still considered by many to be the “greatest and most influential scientist that has ever lived.” Turn the page for more!

A World of Science (Continued) • French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur is best known for creating the method of pasteurization to keep milk and wine from spoiling in addition to creating vaccines for a number of diseases including rabies. Oddly enough, when Pasteur was in school, his teachers considered him to only be mediocre at chemistry. • All coffee fanatics have Melitta Bentz to thank. Bentz was a typical German housewife that went on to invent the coffee filter, 300 years after coffee had been discovered. She revolutionized the idea of using paper to filter out the unwanted residues. • Before he made his contributions to our knowledge about space (as well as creating his many inventions), Italian born Galileo Galilei wanted to be a musician. His father insisted that he go to medical school, yet Galilei never received his degree from the University of Pisa. He did, however, go on to publish “The Starry Messenger,” presenting among many other findings that Earth was not the center of the universe. • Although he might have found proof for the Earth not being the center of the universe, Galilei was not the first to introduce this concept. Mathematician and astronomer Nicholas Copernicus first claimed that the sun was the stationary object that Earth revolved around. His idea was disregarded by most, but he is credited as the initiator of the Scientific Revolution. • German chemist Robert Bunsen is famous for the Bunsen burner, although he never actually invented the iconic scientific tool; he merely improved it. • Although most scientists get their start in universities, it is only appropriate that Laszlo Jozsef Biro, inventor of the ball point pen, began as a journalist and editor. His brilliant idea stemmed from his annoyance at writing with a fountain pen. • Changing forever the music industry, German immigrant Emile Berliner revolutionized sound recording by being the first person to start recording on flat disks or records. He went on to invent the gramophone and records. Did you know that the first records were made of glass long before they switched to plastic?

The Evolution of the ‘Dog/Cat Doctor’ into the Feline Specialist In 1996 the American Board of Veterinary Practice (ABVP) first recognized the Feline Specialty as a distinct specialty area. Currently there are 84 feline specialists in the United States and Canada. A long, rigorous certification process is required to become a species specialist – practice requirements, continuing education, indepth case studies, a three part written and practical examination. The passion and persistence to improve professional skills is the reason to become board certified in a feline specialty. Foremost, feline practitioners must love cats and they are driven to elevate the medical/surgical care of cats. Dr. James Olson, DVM, DABVP (Feline Specialty) has been recognized for a chapter written in the new edition of THE FELINE PATIENT - 2011, Breed Specific Diseases. The chapter catalogs current diseases that affect feline breeds and the new laboratory and genetic tests that have been developed to identify them. Dr. Olson has also written a chapter on Hyperthyroidism in FELINE MEDICAL SECRETS that details the hyperthyroid disease syndrome and treatment. Hyperthyroidism is the number one endrocrine disease affecting cats. Dr. Olson was one of the pioneers who develped the radio-iodine treatment model with a three day release after treatment. This has become a the standard for new I-131 facilities in the United States and Canada. Others areas of interest are the study and treatment of resistant urinary tract infections, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiomyopathy and kidney disease. In the pasts, dogs have received most of the money and research efforts, but currently the feline specialists and feline directed research groups (The Cornell Feline Health Center, The Morris Animal Foundation and The Winn Foundation) are directing major feline research efforts. Cats are the number one pet in the United States and they are becoming the healthiest pet in the country.

My older cat recently has had a ravenous appetite, begs for food, and he is still losing weight. “Herbie” is very active, plays like a kitten and he has begun to caterwaul at night. What is wrong with “Herbie”? The most common disease problem affecting older cats with these clinical signs is hyperthyroidism. A blood panel with thyroid tests (T4, and fT4ED) is needed for diagnosis. The best news is that this endocrine disease can be CURED! The Cat Specialist doctors have advanced training in nuclear medicine, using 131I to destroy the tumor cells that cause this disease. One treatment cures >96% of affected cats. If your cat is having these problems call our hospital.

Scott McQueen This opaque, deep blue gemstone was among the ďŹ rst gemstones to be worn as jewelry. Archaeologists have found this gemstone in excavations in a variety of places around the Mediterranean where they were used as decorative chains and ďŹ gures; indicating the stone has been popular for thousands of years among the people of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, Greece and Rome. Countless lapis lazuli signet rings, scarabs and ďŹ gures were brought to Europe by Alexander the Great. They referred to the dark blue color as “ultramarineâ€?, which means something like “from beyond the sea.â€? The name is actually composed from a Latin word “lapisâ€? meaning stone, and an Arabic word “azulaâ€? meaning blue. The stone was used by the Old Masters in their art. It was ground up into a powder and mixed together with binding-agents to create a radiant blue used in watercolors and oil paints. Lapis lazuli is regarded by many as the stone of friendship and truth. It is said to encourage harmony in relationships and to help its wearer be authentic and speak honestly. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. Green Gardening Q: What are some ways that I can keep my garden environmentally friendly? -- Tucker in Hartford, Conn.

Licensed & Insured Certified Workmanship Commercial/Residential Remodel/New Construction Electrical Troubleshooting No Job too small

303-463-1800 www.obrienelectrical.com

A: A garden by itself is a great way to make a positive environmental impact, both beautifying your property and providing lots of fresh herbs and vegetables -- so you don’t have to make as many trips to the store to buy veggies that were trucked in. But there also are direct environmental issues concerning the care of a garden, such as the impact of chemical fertilizers and bug sprays. There are a number of ways to reduce this impact: --Catch rainwater in a barrel to use in watering the lawn and garden: place the barrel underneath your home’s downspout. A covered barrel will discourage mosquitoes from taking up residence. --Build a compost pile to use as your main source of fertilizer and rich soil in the garden. --Hand-weed the garden if possible. If you must use chemical weed-killer, use it exactly as directed on the package or bottle. --Use the right amount of fertilizer recommended for the types of plants in your garden. Too much fertilizer can result in excess runoff into nearby streams or lakes, ecosystems that often are already stressed by lawn chemicals and fertilizers. --Visit a local co-op, community farm or farmer’s market to get information on organic and environmentally sustainable gardening. Classes or seminars are available in many cities for aspiring organic gardeners. There’s plenty of information out there, so head to the Internet and look around. HOME TIP: A list of tips on organic and sustainable gardening, composting and more can be found at http://www.globalstewards.org/garden-ecotips. htm.

• Scottish scientist James Watt was considered a “delicate” child and spent a great deal of his childhood homeschooled by his mother and was considered slow in many academic areas — except for math. Watt eventually invented the steam engine, and after Parliament granted him a patent that prevented anyone else from making a similar machine, Watt went on to control a steam engine dynasty.

• Known as the Father of Geometry, ancient Greek Mathematician Euclid published his ideas in “The Elements,” and his teachings influenced Western mathematics for more than 2,000 years. Since it is estimated that he lived from 325 BC-265 BC, little is known about his life. • Born into a prominent family of wealth, Italian scientist Amedeo Avogadro followed in his family’s footsteps to practice law but couldn’t shake his interest in the natural sciences. He studied physics and math in private for years before he published his hypothesis about molecules that was eventually labeled Avogadro’s Law. • Immensely famous for his printing press, Johannes Gutenberg began as a goldsmith and businessman before making his contributions as a scientist and inventor. Gutenberg forever altered the method and speed by which books were distributed to the public. • German physicist Wilhelm Rontgen is known for discovering X-rays and received great recognition for his findings, including streets named in his honor, countless awards and the Nobel Prize in Physics. • German physician and bacteriologist Robert Koch made a discovery that changed medicine forever: All diseases were not caused by bad air but instead by bacteria. He was able to find the causes of such deadly diseases of tuberculosis, cholera and the cycle of anthrax. Koch won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1905. • Although he was expected to enter the medical field, Frederick Sanger’s interest in nature and science was too strong. Fighting Cavities with ‘Sugar’ ?? Q. Can we really fight tooth decay with ‘sugar’? A. Yes! An important way to fight cavities is with the sugar substitute sweetener Xylitol. Xylitol is a natural sugar that not only helps fight cavities, but can actually prevent them. Q. What is Xylitol? A. Xylitol is a naturally-occuring sugar alcohol found in the fibers of fruits and vegetables and other plants. It is found in berries, oats, mushrooms, corn husks, sugar cane, trees, and many other plants. It is practically as sweet as table sugar, and is used as a sweetener in certain brands of chewing gum, mints, toothpastes, mouth rinses, candy, lemonade mixes, and all-purpose sweeteners. Q. How does ‘sugar’ (Xylitol) fight tooth decay? A. Xylitol fights cavities in several ways: (1) It attracts and then inhibits, or starves out, the specific bacteria that cause tooth decay. (2) Unlike ordinary table sugar, Cindy Rose Xylitol does not break down, or ferment, into harmful acids that de-mineralize tooth enamel and cause a cavity. (3) Xylitol creates just the right chemistry in the saliva to re-mineralize the Calcium and Phosphate minerals back into damaged tooth structure and “heal” the early cavity.

Q. Is Xylitol safe? A. Xylitol is safe for humans; it is deadly for dogs. Xylitol has no known toxicity in humans. However, “man’s best friend” does not tolerate Xylitol, even in small amounts. Therefore, since many dogs have a “sweet tooth”, they can easily snoop around and find their master’s stash of gum, mints, or candy. Be sure to keep xylitol-containing products out of your dog’s reach. If you suspect your dog has consumed any Xylitol, get him/her to the Vet immediately! Q. How much Xylitol do I need? A. Research suggests one should consume six to ten grams per day. A stick of Xylitol gum or mint typically has about one gram of Xylitol. For optimum effect in fighting cavities, it’s important to consume Xylitol throughout the day; so it will continually fight those “bad bugs” that cause cavities, and aid in remineralizing.

How can you help make sure that your move doesn’t slow your progress toward your financial goals? Consider the following relocation “checklist”:

Open new bank accounts, and set up automatic transfers. If your move requires you to change banks, open your new accounts as soon as possible. And if you had your previous bank automatically move money each month from a checking or savings account into an investment, set up a similar arrangement at your new bank. Decide what to do with your employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you are leaving your job, you’ll need to make some decisions about your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. For example, you might have the option of leaving your money in your former employer’s plan, or you may be able to roll the money over to a new employer’s plan. Alternatively, you could decide to transfer the assets into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). Your financial advisor can help you make the choice that’s right for your situation. Discuss your situation with a tax professional. You may want to meet with your tax professional to consider the benefits or liabilities of any differences in tax laws between your new location and your old one. You may also need to address any implications resulting from moving and changing jobs. Review your financial goals. Some of your goals, such as those related to housing and where you want to retire, may have changed as a result of your move. So it’s a good idea to meet with your financial advisor to review your objectives. Evaluate your monthly budget. If you followed a budget detailing your expenses and cash flow before your move, you may need to update it after you’ve settled in to your new home. If you haven’t set up a budget in the past, you’ve now got a good reason to establish one — because a well-planned budget can help you avoid dipping into your long-term investments to pay for shortterm needs. Update your insurance coverage. Make sure your vehicles, stored possessions and new residence are covered during your move. And if your health insurance is changing, be aware of what’s covered under your new policy. Review your estate plans. If your move coincides with other important life events, such as marriage, divorce or remarriage, you may need to make some moves related to your estate plans, such as ensuring you have the correct beneficiary designations on any life insurance policies and your 401(k), IRA and other investment accounts. Check with your legal advisor to determine which steps make sense for your situation. Moving may require you to adjust many aspects of your life. Reviewing the items on this checklist can help you get your financial house in order when you move into your new home. Change by April Norton

"Action and reaction, ebb and flow, trial and error, change - this is the rhythm of living. Out of our overconfidence, fear; out of our fear, clearer vision, fresh hope. And out of hope, progress." - Bruce Barton Throughout time, change has been constantly inevitable. Some good, some bad- but always different. As an example, according to a recent study published in CNN Money, home ownership recently fell to the lowest it has been in 15 years; due largely, in part, to foreclosure. This statement alone proves that many people in our country are facing the change of extreme economic hardship. The "hope" factor is often missing in these cases as fear consumes and renders some unable to create progress.

50th High School Reunion He was a widower and she a widow. They had known each other for a number of years being high school classmates and having attended class reunions in the last 20 years without fail. This 50th anniversary of their class, the widower and the widow made a foursome with two other singles. They had a wonderful evening, their spirits high. The widower throwing admiring glances across the table. The widow smiling coyly back at him. Finally, he picked up courage to ask her, "Will you marry me?" After about six seconds of careful consideration, she answered, "Yes, ..... yes I will!" The evening ended on a happy note for the widower. But the next morning he was troubled. Did she say “Yes” or did she say “No?” He couldn't remember. Try as he would, he just could not recall. He went over the conversation of the previous evening, but his mind was blank. He remembered asking the question but for the life of him could not recall her response. With fear and trepidation he picked up the phone and called her. First, he explained that he couldn't remember as well as he used to. Then he reviewed the past evening. As he gained a little more courage he then inquired of her. "When I asked if you would marry me, did you say “Yes” or did you say “No?”
