TIDBITS® TAKES A DIVE
UNDER THE SEA by Kathy Wolfe
There is some pretty intriguing life in the world’s oceans, and this week, Tidbits dives into examining some of the unusual creatures found there. • Probably the most feared shark and frequently called a “man-eater,” the great white shark actually prefers a dinner of sea lion rather than human prey. The species’ Latin name Carchardon Carcharias, translates “jagged teeth,” and indeed, this shark has about 3,000 teeth, all arranged in several rows. They find their prey very easily due to their extreme sensitivity to the electrical field surrounding living creatures, perceiving half a billionth of a volt. They’re found in every major ocean, and have a life span of more than 30 years. How likely are you to experience an unprovoked attack by a shark? You’re more likely to die from a lightning strike. • Due to the publicity generated by the death of adventurer Steve Irwin, lots of folks believe that the manta ray can kill a human. Irwin’s chest was pierced by a stingray, not a manta. The manta is the largest of all rays, up to 25 feet (7.6 m) across, weighing as much as 5,100 pounds (2,300 kg). While its tail is similar to that of a stingray, it does not have a stinger and is harmless to swimmers. turn the page for more!

UNDER THE SEA (continued): • The squid, snail, octopus and clam are all examples of mollusks, soft-bodied creatures with no internal skeleton. Some mollusks have a hard outer-shell; some do not. More than 85,000 species of mollusks have been identified, and most probably there are many more that have not yet been discovered. • The common squid can be found in all of the oceans of the world. Most are about 24 inches (60 cm) long, but the giant squid reaches lengths of 43 feet (13 m). In 2003, an even larger species was discovered, the colossal squid, which may grow to 46 feet (14 m). When in danger, the squid emits a cloud of ink from a sac to confuse its predators. This mollusk has the largest eyes in the animal kingdom; in fact, the colossal squid’s eyes have a diameter of about 11 inches (28 cm). • Certain octopuses have a life span of only six months. Even the longer-living species only live about four years. Reproduction takes its toll on this sea creature, with males surviving only a few months after mating and females dying within a short time after their eggs hatch. An octopus, like the squid, is a cephalopod, which translates to “head to foot” because its appendages are attached to its head. Also like the squid, the octopus ejects a cloud of dark ink when threatened by predators. The ink is colored by melanin, the same compound that gives humans our hair color. Not only can the octopus eject ink for protection, it can instantly camouflage itself, changing the color of its skin to match its environment. • The largest octopus is the Giant Pacific Octopus, which swims in the waters off British Columbia. Their average weight is usually about 33 pounds (15 kg), with an arm span of about 14 feet (4.3 m) and rarely exceeds 90 pounds (40.8 kg). However, the occasional one is found that lives up to the name “giant,” such as the largest ever caught, which weighed about 600 pounds (272 kg). • The mythological mermaid first appeared in stories around 1,000 B.C. An Assyrian legend tells of the goddess Atargatis falling in love with a mortal shepherd. When she accidentally killed him, she was so devastated, she jumped into a lake and took the form of a fish. Although beautiful, mermaids don’t have a very good reputation. Folklore tells of them singing to people to enchant them, then luring them to their doom. Rather than rescuing drowning sailors, they squeeze the life out of them. British tales speak of seeing a mermaid as an unlucky omen, one that foretells of impending disaster.

FIELD MOWING
Mosquitoes Bring Heartworm Season –
Prevention is Key! Cats and dogs can be infected with heartworm disease by the bite from a carrier mosquito. The coyote has become the ‘natural’ reservoir for the disease. Dogs are the primary host for the disease, but cats and other animals can become infected, and the consequences are serious. Indoor cats are just as susceptible as outdoor cats! The good news is that this disease can be prevented. There is no effective treatment once your cat is infected, so prevention is the key. A safe, monthly topical medication is the best way to protect your cat(s). If you have questions please call our hospital.

Plants are a significant cause of sickness and death in cats, second only to pesticide poisonings. Indoor cats are more inclined to get sick eating plants than outdoor cats. Boredom is the most common cause of choosing to eat plants in the house. During the holiday seasons cats are exposed to poisonous decorative plants such as Holly, Dumbcane, and Easter lilies. Keep all toxic plants away from your cats and pets. Q: I was wondering what one of my favorite TV hosts, Leeza Ryan Harris Gibbons, has been up to lately. Is there a show on which I can catch this beautiful lady? -Paul G., via e-mail A: Leeza, 54, recently married her beau of almost three years, Steven Fenton. The former longtime “Entertainment Tonight” host -- who hosts the PBS show “My Generation” -- will be back on daily TV this fall in the syndicated program “America Now,” with Bill Rancic. The half-hour daily news program will deliver short segments of timely information covering lifestyle topics like health, beauty, finance, family and home. Check your local TV listings as the Sept. 12 premiere date gets closer, and check www.celebrityextraonline. com in mid-July to read my full interview with the gorgeous newlywed. *** Q: I am a longtime Don Johnson fan and would love to see him on the screen again -- any screen. Since his pilot “Mann’s World” wasn’t picked up, do you know if he has anything else in the works? -- Whitney A., via e-mail A: If you haven’t already seen his turn on this past season’s “Eastbound & Down” as Kenny Powers’ father, Eduardo Sanchez, then you first and foremost must watch that. Then head over to Will Ferrell’s comedy website, funnyordie.com, and check out Don’s hilarious short, “Four Loko Vineyards.” Then you’ll need to wait a little while to see him in the thriller “Vineyard Haven,” which is set for a spring 2012 release. In it, Don plays an eccentric writing professor who wedges himself between a couple in distress. *** Q: I finally saw the Sylvester Stallone shoot-’emup extravaganza, “The Expendables,” on DVD the other night. The movie was actually a lot of fun, and I was surprised to have enjoyed it so much. I also noticed that the ending left it open for a possible sequel. Could there be plans for one? -- Jessica R., Hamilton, Ohio A: You know it! The movie took in $266 million worldwide, so you can bet Sly and company want to cash in on this particular cash cow. All of the original “good guys” are rumored to be returning for the sequel, which is set for an August 2012 release. There’s no word yet on whether ex-California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to make another cameo (or perhaps a larger role this time?). *** READERS: Thanks to all who entered Celebrity Extra’s summer of contests. Congrats to Steven S., Aaron B., Anthony S., Jennifer B. and Tiffany R., who each won an autographed CD of Rachel Fine’s debut CD, “Own Your Own.” Chris C., Frank G., David D., Alicia W. and Rita R. all won a copy of Barton Seaver’s cookbook, “For Cod and Country.” And last but not least, congrats to Kary S., who won the “True Blood” season three DVD set. Scott McQueen Travel to Australia to find the worlds finest opals where 95% of them are found in the arid, remote outback deserts. The ancient Australian aborigine lore taught that the Creator came down to earth on a rainbow and the very spot where his foot touched the ground the stones started gleaming in all the colors of the rainbow and the opal was born. There are a variety of opals but all share one characteristic: they shine and sparkle in a constantly varying play of colors described by gemologists as “opalising”. This color play makes the opal attractive, fascinating and valuable. In 1960s a team of Australian scientists analyzed opals with an electron microscope and discovered that small spheres from silica gel causes interference and the refraction of light resulting in “opalising”. Pliny, the famous Roman author, called opal a gemstone which combines the best possible characteristics of the most beautiful of gemstones: the fine sparkle of Almandine, the shining purple of Amethyst, the golden yellow of Topaz, and the deep blue of Sapphire, ”so that all colors shine and sparkle together in a beautiful combination“.

UNDER THE SEA (continued): months, during which it will drink 100 gallons (379 l) of milk every day, putting on about 200 pounds (91 kg) a day. That’s eight pounds (3.6 kg) an hour! When a calf is weaned, it is 52 feet (16 m) long and weighs about 23 tons (20,900 kg). • Just the tongue of a blue whale has a weight of 2.7 tons (2,700 kg), more than an elephant. Fifty people could stand on it! Its mouth can hold up to 90 tons of food and water, but strangely enough, the whale’s throat dimensions only allow for it to swallow an item the size of a beach ball. The heart weighs 1,300 pounds (590 kg), the size of a small car, and beats just 10 times per minute. Its major arteries are large enough for a small child to crawl through. • “Benthic marine algae” is a fancy name used by
scientists for seaweed. Seaweed is used for everything from food to medicine to fertilizer. People in some Asian countries consider some varieties a great delicacy and receive health benefits from its rich deposits of calcium, magnesium and iodine. Folks in Belize mix it with milk, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla for a popular beverage. Germans add seaweed’s compounds to many of their beers. You’ll find it in cosmetics, wound dressings, toothpaste and diet pills. Exclusive spas offer seafood wraps for the body. At the hardware store, seaweed is present in paints and fertilizers. • An echinoderm is characterized by “racial symmetry,” that is, several arms radiating from a central body. The most familiar echinoderm is the starfish. Although we think of the starfish as having five arms or “rays,” there are several species that have six or more. Some have 10 to 15 arms, and the Antarctic species Labidiaster annulatus can even have up to 50! A starfish’s mouth is found on the underside of its body, and many of these creatures swallow their prey whole. Although the lifespan of the average starfish is about 10 years, some live past 30. OVERCOMING THE ODDS;
DAVE DRAVECKY
Little boys dream of playing in the big leagues, as did Dave Dravecky, who pitched his first no-hitter as a teen. After attaining his dream, tragedy struck. Yet this inspirational man picked himself up and has gone on to help those plagued by disease. Hats off to this courageous gentleman! • Ohio-born Dravecky was 26 years old when he was drafted by the San Diego Padres and made his Major League Baseball debut in 1982. The lefthanded pitcher won 14 games in his second season and represented the Padres in 1983’s All-Star game. The next year, he contributed to the Padres’ firstever pennant. • In 1987, the San Francisco Giants acquired Dravecky, who was at the peak of his career. On the 1988 season’s opening day, he pitched a 5-1 victory over the Dodgers. Late that season, a desmoid tumor, a rare type of cancer that develops in the tissue that forms tendons and ligaments, was discovered in his pitching arm. Dravecky underwent surgery that October, and half of the deltoid muscle (the one that forms the rounded contour of the shoulder) was removed. In addition, the long humerus bone in his arm was frozen in an attempt to eradicate all cancerous cells. • Dravecky’s circumstance might have been a career ender for a lesser man. His doctors told him, “Short of a miracle, you’ll never pitch again.” But he was determined to make a comeback, and defying all odds, the following July, he was pitching in the minors. The next month, August of 1989, a miracle happened, and Dravecky was back on the mound for the Giants in an amazing comeback game against the Cincinnati Reds at Candlestick Park. He pitched eight innings and the Giants defeated the Reds 4-3. • Five days later, Dravecky was in Montreal, up against the Expos. He started off the game with three no-hit innings, another incredible deed. In the sixth inning, he allowed a home run on the first batter, and hit the second batter. With the third batter came what has been called “the pitch that could be heard around the world.” Dravecky’s humerus bone broke in two, and in his words, “You could hear the popping noise of my arm breaking all over the stadium. I never felt that kind of pain in my life. It felt like my arm was coming off.” In the post-season playoffs, the Giants won the National League pennant, and as the ecstatic team piled onto each other, his arm was broken again.

How to Make Sure You Fire up the Grill…and Not Your House. Summer has arrived and that means pools, mowing the yard and for many Americans, it means inviting friends and family over for those unforgettable BBQ’s. Here are some helpful tips to ensure that the fire stays where it’s supposed to. • Use gas and charcoal BBQ’s outside ONLY. • Position your grill a minimum of 3 feet away from other objects, including the house or shrubs and bushes. Some recommend as far as 25 feet from a structure. • Double check to make sure your grill has a stable base. A wobbly grill is an accident waiting to happen. • Before you use your grill, check all connections for leaks. The best way to do this is to put soapy water on all of the joints and connections, and to watch for tiny bubbles to form. If they do, you have a leak that needs to be fixed BEFORE you light the grill. • Check for grease build up and clean if necessary. • Check for rusted or corroded burners, as this part of your gas grill often needs replacing. These parts tend to wear out quickly, but are easy to replace. • For a charcoal BBQ, use the minimum amount of lighter fluid. • Always light your gas BBQ with the lid open, and do not wear loose or flowing clothes. • Do not overfill the propane tank. • Dispose of hot coals properly – Douse them with water, and stir them to make sure the fire is out. Never place them in a plastic, paper or wood container. • We know you’re not an insurance professional and that’s OK! Email us with any questions or topics you might like discussed. ¥ It was 19th-century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer who made the following sage observation: “There is no absurdity so palpable but that it may be firmly planted in the human head if you only begin to inculcate it before the age of five, by constantly repeating it with an air of great solemnity.” ¥ Those who study such things say that half of all money spent on food in the United States is spent in restaurants. ¥ If, like me, you are constantly finding excess wire hangers in your closets, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that more than 2.7 billion of them were imported in 2010 alone. ¥ You might be surprised to learn that beer brewers in Australia are on the cutting edge of alternative energy production. They have created a “beer battery” -- the world’s first, they claim -- in which electricity is generated by bacteria consuming the waste that is created by the brewing process. ¥ Companies today sometimes seem to go too far in advertising their products, but consider Richard Chesebrough, who invented the petroleum jelly Vaseline in 1872. In order to market his new creation as a salve for cuts and burns, he traveled around New York state demonstrating the efficacy of the product by burning his skin with acid, then applying Vaseline to the injury. A display of his past burns that had been healed with Vaseline would, in theory, convince people to buy the product. ¥ If you’re looking to brighten up your living space with some greenery, you might want to consider getting a bonsai tree. Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Roth IRA: A Lifetime Investment Some investments are appropriate during your working years, while others are more suitable for retirement. But a Roth Individual Retirement Account (IRA) can provide you with benefits at virtually Cindy Rose every stage of your life. Let’s take a quick “journey” through some of these stages to see just how valuable a Roth IRA can be. To begin with, you can open a Roth IRA at any age, provided you have earned income and meet certain income limits. So if you’re just starting out in your career, put as much as you can afford into your Roth IRA and gradually increase your contributions as your income rises, up to the contribution limit. A Roth IRA is an excellent retirement savings vehicle because it can grow tax free and your contributions can be invested into just about any investment you choose — stocks, bonds, mutual funds, CDs and so on. Of course, when you’re young, you might not be thinking much about retirement. But the earlier you start contributing to a Roth IRA, the more you could end up with — and the difference could be substantial. In fact, if you started putting money into a Roth IRA at age 30, and you contributed the maximum amount each year until you reached 65, you would accumulate more than $766,000, assuming you are in the 25% tax bracket and you earned a 7% return, compounded annually. But, given the same assumptions, you’d end up with only about $365,000 if you waited until 40 before you started contributing. It clearly pays to contribute early and annually to a Roth IRA. (In 2011, the annual contribution limit is $5,000, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older.) There are additional benefits to funding a Roth IRA, such as its flexible withdrawal options, which are available to you even before you retire. Since you already paid taxes on the money you put into your Roth, you can withdraw your contributions at any time without paying taxes or penalties. Generally speaking, it’s certainly best to leave your Roth IRA intact for as long as possible. But if there's an emergency and you need access to the funds, you can also withdraw your Roth’s earnings tax free, provided you’ve held your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’ve reached 59½. Now, let’s fast-forward to your retirement. Unlike other retirement accounts, such as a traditional IRA or a 401(k), your Roth IRA does not require you to start taking withdrawals at age 70½ — or ever. If you don’t need the money, you can leave it alone, possibly to grow further, for as long as you like. This means that you might have more money to bequeath to your children or other beneficiaries, and they won’t have to pay income taxes on withdrawals from either your contributions or your earnings, provided your Roth IRA account has been open for at least five years. Keep in mind, though, that your beneficiaries will be required to take distributions based on their life expectancy. As you can see, a Roth IRA can be an excellent financial “traveling companion” as you go through life. So consider adding a Roth to your portfolio — and bon voyage. Churches and Non-Profit Organizations... Advertise for only $15 per WEEK!!! For details call, So what is it about Jesus that separates Him and Christianity from every other religion? Well, there are some major differences and to get fully into each and every one would be more than this column would allow, but let me touch on what I feel is the most significant issue. As we have established, man is separated from God the Father because of sin. And even though God loves us, because He is a holy and righteous God, He cannot come into the presence of sin in any shape or form. And sin to define it is simple terms, is a violation of light, a violation of truth. But God had a plan to redeem His people, to buy you and I back so that our relationship and our standing with Him could be restored once and for all and that is where Jesus comes in. Jesus led a sinless life, and when he was crucified, the Bible tells us He took the sins of the entire world upon Him. Since he died in our place, having never sinned, his shed innocent blood now covers or makes an atonement for every sin you and I have ever done or will ever do. And when a person makes Jesus the Lord and Saviour of their life, now when God the Father looks upon you, He does not see the sinful, evil, wicked you, but He sees the blood of His only Son and because of that finished work, you and I are declared holy and righteous, we are declared worthy of His presence. Because Jesus died and was resurrected, this alone separates Him and Christianity from every other religion the world has to offer, yes EVERY ONE! The Bible declares the truth of this matter in 1 Timothy 2:5 (New Living Translation) For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity— the man Christ Jesus. No other person from any other religion has died for you, has been resurrected back to life for you, Jesus is THE only one. All other forms of religion in some way, shape or form, try and use works as a way back to God. But the truth is and always will be that no amount of good works can ever place you back into right standing with God, it is simply grace through faith; faith in God’s only begotten son who died for you. And if you have never experienced this, you can right now by simply repeating this simple prayer. “Jesus come into my life. Forgive me of all my sins. I ask You to cleanse my heart, and make me a new person in You right now. I believe that You are the Son of God and that You died on the cross for me. Jesus, I want to thank You for loving me enough to die for me. I accept all that your shed blood bought for me on the cross, and I receive you as my Savior and Lord. In Your name I pray. Amen.”

Ben Affleck, who won an Oscar for writing “Good Will Hunting” with Matt Damon, has completed director Terence Malick’s (“Tree of Life”) Ryan Harris untitled film, with President & Founder Oscar winners Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”) and Rachel Weisz (“The Constant Gardener”), as well as Rachel McAdams (“Midnight In Paris”). This summer, Affleck will star in and direct “Argo” for George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s company. It’s about how the CIA used a “Planet of the Apes” makeup artist to rescue six Americans during the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis by faking the production of a large-scale sci-fiction film. It’s based on a story from Wired Magazine and will be released in 2013. A Michigan reader asks, “Why did ‘Gunsmoke’s’ James Arness and his brother, Peter Graves, have different names?” Years ago, Peter Graves, of TV’s “Mission: Impossible,” sat next to me on a plane headed to the Jack Benny tennis and golf tournaments in Texas, and I asked him that very question. Peter explained, “My grandfather came to America and told immigration his name was Aursnes but they wrote Aurness, which became our family name. When my brother, James Aurness started acting, he dropped the “u” and became James Arness. When I started acting, I couldn’t be Peter Aurness when my brother was James Arness, so I took the last name of my maternal grandfather and became Peter Graves.” The last thing Peter did was narrate the computer game “Darkstar: the Interactive movie,” released eight months after he passed away. Having met James Arness, who left us on June 3, and his brother, Peter Graves, who left us in March 2010, I can honestly say that they were extraordinary dedicated actors and devoted family men. We won’t see their like again! We reported earlier that “Will & Grace” star Sean Hayes would play Larry Fine and “Madtv’s” Will Sasso would play Curley in “The Three Stooges Movie.” Now we can tell you that Moe Howard will be played by Chris Diamantopolas. You saw him as Robin Williams in the “Mork & Mindy” TV movie, in the eighth season of “24” as chief of staff Rob Weiss, and as Frank Sinatra in the “Kennedy’s” mini-series. To check out what they’ll look like, Google the new Three Stooges film. Add “Glee’s” Jane Lynch, “Modern Family’s” Sofia Vergara, “Dreamgirls” Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, “Boston Legal’s” Craig Bierko and “7th Heaven’s” Stephen Collins, and you’ve got a great cast. It looks as if The Farrelly Brothers will give “The Stooges” the send-up they truly deserve. After this movie comes out, though, if anyone asks you to “pick two fingers,” trust me ... DON’T!
