Of all of the water on earth, 1 percent is fresh water available for human consumption, 2 percent is frozen, and a whopping 97 percent is saltwater. On average, every 2.2 pounds (1 kg) of seawater contains around 1.2 ounces (35 g) of dissolved salt.
H & M
• You’ve probably seen movies where people are stranded on the ocean with no fresh water to drink. Seawater, or saltwater, is not safe for human consumption. Salt dehydrates our bodies and is harmful if ingested in large quantities.

• So is it possible to make saltwater safe for humans to drink? Yes. The process is called desalination. Scientists have come up with several ways to desalinate water, but they are all costly processes. Reverse osmosis, distillation, electrodialysis and vacuum freezing are some examples. • Since saltwater is harmful to humans, is it also harmful to all animals? The answer is obviously no as there are millions of saltwater fish and other saltwater creatures that thrive in our oceans. turn the page for more!

SALTWATER (continued): • The Hebrew name for the Dead Sea is “Yam ha Maved,” which actually means “killer sea.” The Dead Sea is nearly 10 times more salty than other seas and the open oceans, having a salinity reading of 33.7 percent. This means nearly 35 percent of the water is dissolved salts. It is one of the world’s saltiest bodies of water. By comparison, ocean water is 3.5 percent dissolved salts. • The Dead Sea is over 1,300 feet (396.2 m) below sea level. At its deepest part, it is over 2,300 feet (701 m) below sea level. It is 42 miles (67 km) long and 11 miles (18 km) wide at its widest point. The Jordan River empties into the Dead Sea; the Dead Sea does not empty out anywhere. It is endorheic, which means it has no outlet besides evaporation. It is totally landlocked, and the deeper areas are the saltiest. There are an estimated 1.9 billion tons of potassium chloride salt in the Dead Sea, which are harvested by using a system of evaporation ponds. • The McMurdo Dry Valley in Antarctica has a small pond that is actually considered the saltiest body of water on earth. Don Juan Pond is an ankledeep mirror pond between mountain peaks. It never freezes, even in temperatures that go as low as -40°F (-40°C).

• The Great Salt Lake near Salt Lake City, Utah, is another endorheic lake, sometimes called “America’s Dead Sea.” The Jordan, Weber and Bear Rivers empty into the lake and deposit around 1.1 million tons (over 997 million kg) of minerals in the lake annually. • The Great Salt Lake provides habitat for brine shrimp, native birds, shorebirds and waterfowl, including the largest population of Wilson’s Phalarope in the world. This small migratory bird is halophilic, which means “salt loving.” • Another large endorheic lake is the Caspian Sea. This sea is bordered by five countries: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan and Iran. The largest lake on the planet at 143,000 square miles (371,000 sq km), it is called a sea because the Romans who discovered it found it to be salty. With the huge size of the Caspian, the saltiness varies greatly. The southern Caspian is more salty than the northern portion. There are 130 rivers that flow into the Caspian with the Volga in the north being the largest. • Major oil and gas production takes place along the edges of the Caspian Sea. In addition, caviar harvested from the lake’s sturgeon, which are large ancient-looking fish with large mouths and no scales, is a major commodity. There are three types of sturgeon in the region: the Beluga, Russian Sturgeon and the Stellate Sturgeon. The Beluga is the largest member of the Sturgeon family, Continued on page 7

Dangerous Plants Cats Encounter – Indoors/Outdoors #5 of 5 Plants of all types and climate ranges can poison your cat. Plants are a significant cause of sickness and death in cats, second only to pesticide poisonings. Indoor cats are more inclined to get sick eating plants than outdoor cats. Boredom is the most common cause of choosing to eat plants in the house. During the holiday seasons cats are exposed to poisonous decorative plants such as Holly, Dumbcane, and Easter lilies. Keep all toxic plants away from your cats and pets.

Q: I was a huge fan of CBS’ “Without a Trace,” so I was Ryan Harris thrilled to see that Poppy Montgomery is coming back to TV this fall, starring in “Unforgettable.” What made her decide to return to television? -- Darcy R., via e-mail A: I spoke with Poppy recently, and I asked her just that, and it basically boiled down to many elements coming together at the perfect time. Poppy told me: “The script was amazing. I’m obsessed with Niels (Arden Oplav), the director, and had been long before I ever met him. I’ve seen ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ maybe 30 times. “I’ve worked with CBS since I was a baby,” she said. “So it’s like coming home again. It’s such a great place for me to work, and I feel like they support their shows so wholly and completely. Everything about it lined up for me. And I want to see a strong female character leading an exciting show.” Speaking of strong female characters, Poppy portrays “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling in Lifetime’s original movie, “Magic Beyond Words: The J.K. Rowling Story,” which airs Monday, July 18. Of playing the famously reclusive author, Poppy told me: “When they sent me the script I definitely had reservations, because I knew that J.K. Rowling wasn’t collaborating on it. But when I read the script, I found that it was a beautiful, inspiring story and a love letter to an extraordinary woman.” *** Q: What has my favorite “Friend,” Lisa Kudrow, been up to lately? -- Tina D., Seattle A: Since “Friends” ended in 2004, Lisa -- who turns 48 on July 30 -- has starred in “Happy Endings,” “P.S. I Love You,” “Bandslam” and “Easy A.” She currently stars in “Web Therapy,” which initially was a Web-exclusive series where Lisa portrays a psychiatrist who dispenses not-so-great advice to an array of eclectic clients. The show was picked up by Showtime, and it premieres Tuesday, July 19, at 11 p.m. “Web Therapy” costars Victor Garber and Lily Tomlin, and guest stars include Courteney Cox, Meryl Streep, Alan Cumming, Selma Blair, Jane Lynch, Molly Shannon and many more. *** Q: While I was on vacation last month, I got totally hooked on “Storage Wars” on A&E. When does a new season premiere? -- Doug F., via e-mail A: “Storage Wars” -- which follows a group of auction hunters who bid on forfeited storage lockers in the hopes of finding hidden treasures that they can sell for profit -- makes its second-season premiere on Wednesday night, July 20. *** Q: Is it true that actor Sean Bean was stabbed in a bar fight in London? Is he OK? -- Emily H. in Pennsylvania A: The “Game of Thrones” star was superficially cut in the arm with broken glass after chasing down a rude bar-goer who made lewd comments to his girlfriend. After the incident, Sean returned to the bar, used its first-aid kit on his arm and had another drink.

The Peridot is one of the few gemstones that come in only one color – a rich green with a subtle suggestion of gold. It is the gemstone of August, perhaps because it is so wearable with a light summer wardrobe. The peridot is both old and new. It can be found in ancient Egyptian jewelry from the 2nd Millennium BC. The stones used then came from a deposit on a small volcanic island in the Red Sea, some 45 miles off the Egyptian coast at Aswan, which was not rediscovered until about 1900 (now exhausted). A few years ago deposits of exceedingly beautiful and transparent peridot were located in the Kashmir region (where parts of Pakistan, Afghanistan and India meet China) that have re-ignited interest in this lovely stone. The most beautiful stones come from the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Because of the rich finds in Pakistan and Afghanistan, there is enough raw material on the market, so the right stone can now be found to cater for each individual taste and each pocket. Large, transparent stones of an intense color are, however, rare and correspondingly expensive. Interest in the peridot gemstone is on the rise and you should definitely get to Scott McQueen know it better. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. READER(S) of the WEEK!
Of Douglas County
SALTWATER (continued): sometimes exceeding 14 feet (4.3 m) and weighing in excess of 2,000 pounds (907 kg). • The Caspian and Dead Seas both have areas of sandy beaches and popular tourist resorts built along the banks. The Great Salt Lake has two parks, Antelope Island State Park and Great Salt Lake State Park, that are popular places to boat, swim and enjoy nature.
Luke, Rebecca, Laurie, Doug & David From Highlands Ranch, CO Each Week, Tidbits of Douglas County readers with our paper. We will take a picture of them and place them in our Reader of the Week. Could you be our next prospect?
• A large resort, the Saltaire Pavilion, was built along the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake in 1893 as a joint effort of the Salt Lake and Los Angeles Railroad Company and the Mormon Church. The resort was built on 2,000 pylons driven into the shore of the lakebed, had a long bridge leading out to the water for swimming and lounging. It became known as the western “Coney Island.”
Forks Optional
• Accidental fires in 1925 and 1931 and an arson fire in the 1970s at Saltaire have made the location famous more for its history than its tourist appeal. The Saltaire boasted the largest dance floor in the world after the rebuilding from the first fire. New investors reopened the venue for music events in 1983. • When we think of life in bodies of saltwater, we often think of whales and sharks, but many other odd and interesting creatures call saltwater home. The largest living crocodilians on earth are saltwater crocodiles, called “salties” by Australians. Average males are 17 feet (5 m) long and 1,000 pounds (450 kg). It is not uncommon for them to be as long as 23 feet (7 m) and 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg). The range of “salties” is Eastern India, Southeast Asia and Northern Australia, so we don’t have to be worried about them in North America. • A bizarre family of fish called white-blooded or crocodile icefish are found in the cold salty waters of Antarctica and southern South America. Lacking red blood cells in their bodies, these fish are pale, have long snouts, wide mouths and large teeth — hence, their name. Their blood carries less oxygen than the red blood cells of other fish. Because of this, icefish have oversized hearts that pump large volumes of blood at low pressures. • You can bring some of this life into your home or office with a saltwater aquarium. Fill it with colorful fish, sea anemones, jellyfish and other creatures to mimic the abundance of the oceans and seas.

• Now, to end this Tidbits on a sweet note. Saltwater taffy is a treat found in many stores, fairs and amusement parks. Is it made from saltwater? No. The most popular story is that a shopkeeper in Atlantic City, New Jersey, gave it the “saltwater” name after his shop was flooded by a tidal surge. OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

PAUL ORFALEA
Paul Orfalea counts his learning problems as “the blessings that allowed him to see the world differently from his peers.” Nicknamed “Kinko” because of his curly red hair, he is an extraordinary entrepreneur. • Orfalea was a child who couldn’t sit still in the classroom. He couldn’t read; he was restless, wiggling all of the time while his mind raced. When he was in school in the 1960s, dyslexia and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) were not recognized or dealt with as they are today. Educators didn’t always know what to do with children who had the undiagnosed “differences.” • Dyslexia is a neurological condition that affects language processing. People with the condition have a hard time recognizing and decoding words. Reading comprehension and even pronunciation skills are usually lacking. With ADHD, restlessness coupled with impulsivity, frustration, difficulty organizing and completing tasks can lead to behavioral problems in classroom settings. Orfalea flunked two grades in school and was expelled from several schools. He did graduate from high school but was a D- student at the bottom of his class. • In Orfalea’s words, he “had supportive parents, and that made all the difference. I was a sensitive kid. I could have easily fallen through the cracks.” He, like many with similar learning difficulties, had the creative thinking, curiosity, adventurous spirit and boldness to pursue an unusual endeavor.

Umbrellas are Only Good for the Rain…Right? When someone says umbrella, you probably think about rain. Well, there’s another kind of umbrella out there and it’s called a personal umbrella policy. An umbrella policy protects you and others covered against the financial burdens of a catastrophic claim, lawsuit or judgment by: • Providing expanded liability coverage over and above your primary liability protection • Increasing the amount of coverage beyond that of your auto insurance and homeowners’/ renters’ insurance Some myths about umbrella coverage • It is just for the rich. • It is too complicated to coordinate with your existing insurance. • The premiums are too expensive. All of these myths are incorrect. Umbrella liability is relatively affordable, can be easily coordinated with your existing insurance policies and by no means is it just for the well to do. High coverage limits such as those provided by an umbrella policy, can be very important if you have significant assets to protect. (A home, a business, etc.) But your assets may be modest in size and need similar protection. It can be less expensive than merely raising the limits on each of your individual policies separately, and can sometimes be issued in higher amounts than your auto or homeowners’ insurance company is willing to provide. You will still need auto and homeowners’ or renters’ coverage, as insurance companies require certain minimum levels of underlying coverage before they will consider issuing an umbrella policy. Let’s say you have an automobile liability insurance policy providing $100,000 /$300,000 in coverage – the first figure representing the maximum liability to one person injured and the second figure, the maximum liability for all persons injured. Your 16-year old son is at fault for an accident and seriously injures someone – a few days of hospitalization and some surgery can easily eat up that $100,000 limit. An umbrella policy pays for any liability you incur above that $100,000 limit up to the limits of your umbrella coverage. Without umbrella coverage, you may be personally responsible for covering the injured person’s medical bills over and above your policy limits. An umbrella policy provides you with an additional layer of protection that would pay those added amounts, up to the limit of the umbrella coverage. And it is less expensive than you might think. Some examples of where umbrella coverage often comes into play: • An auto accident in which you are sued under your auto insurance policy. • Your neighbor slips and falls on your property, and you are sued under your homeowners’ or renters’ insurance. • A natural disaster in which another person’s property is damaged by your tree crashing down on their vehicle or home.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver ¥ It was prolific British author G.K. Chesterton who made the following sage observation: “An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is an adventure wrongly considered.” ¥ According to the Guinness Book of Records, the world’s longest place name belongs to a hill in New Zealand, which is known as Taumatawhakatangihangak oauauotamateaturipukaka pikimaungahoronukupokaiwhe nua kitanatahu. When translated from Maori, the language of the native people, the name reads “place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as land-eater, played his flute to his loved one.” ¥ If you’re planning a vacation to the Four Corners area of the American West, you might want to consider staying at a bed-and-breakfast just north of Farmington, N.M. One of the most unusual lodgings in the country, Kokopelli’s Cave Bed and Breakfast is, as the name suggests, in a cave. Described as a “luxury cliff dwelling,” the cave is reached via a footpath from the top of a mesa. ¥ The poison produced by the golden poison dart frog, found in the rainforests of Colombia, is so toxic that one-third of an ounce is enough to kill 100,000 people. ¥ In a traditional Hungarian wedding, the bride is supposed to ensure the health of her future children by smashing an egg. How the smashing of an egg is supposed to accomplish this feat is unclear.

Losing principal — This type of risk is most closely associated with investing. For example, when you purchase a stock, you know that its value could go up or down. If it drops below your purchase price, and you then sell your shares, you will lose some of your principal. Your response — You can’t eliminate the risk of losing principal, but by owning a mix of stocks, bonds, government securities and other types of investments, you can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Losing value when interest rates change — This type of risk primarily affects fixed-income investments, such as bonds. If you purchase a bond that pays, say, a 4% interest rate, and the market rate goes up to 5%, then the value of your bond will drop because no one will be willing to pay you the full price for it when newer, higher-yielding bonds are available. Your response — You can combat, or even ignore, interest rate risk by holding your bonds until they mature. By doing so, you’ll get your full principal back, provided the issuer doesn’t default, and you’ll continue to receive regular interest payments unless the bonds are “called,” or repurchased by the issuer. (You can help protect against this by purchasing bonds that have some degree of “call protection” and by owning bonds with different maturities.) Losing purchasing power — This risk largely applies to fixed-rate investments such as certificates of deposit (CDs). To illustrate: If you purchase a CD that pays 2%, and the inflation rate is 3%, you are actually losing purchasing power. Your response — Despite their vulnerability to inflation, CDs can offer you some valuable benefits, such as preservation of principal. Yet if you are concerned about fighting inflation, you may want to look for investments than have the potential to offer rising income, such as dividend-paying stocks. In fact, you can find stocks that have increased their dividends for many consecutive years. (Be aware, though, that companies can reduce or eliminate dividends at any time. Also, an investment in stocks fluctuates, and you could lose your principal.) Apart from these individual techniques to reduce investment-related risk, you should also save early and save often — because the more money you accumulate, the greater your ability to follow a long-term strategy that reflects your personal risk tolerance. That’s why it’s a good idea to contribute as much as possible over the years to your IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. By understanding the different types of investment risk, and by acting to help lessen them, you can reduce much of the stress sometimes associated with investing — while you increase your prospects for achieving your objectives.

Matthew 8:1-2 (NLT) Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside. 2 Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.” Right here is where millions of Christians find themselves today in regards to healing. They believe that God can heal their body, they believe He has the power and the ability to heal them. But just like this leper here, they are not convinced that it is His will to heal them. Do you see the difference? God, I know you can but is it your will for me? Well fortunately, you only need one verse further to have that question answered for your life. How did Jesus respond to this question? Matthew 8:3 (NLT)Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared. There you have it, Jesus said I am willing. Well if he was willing then, he must be willing now because the Bible tells us that God does not change. It also tells us that God is not a respecter of persons. What that means if he healed the leper, he will heal you, if not he has changed and we know that cannot be! “I am willing”, he said. “Be healed!” This is exciting news for everyone who has ever asked the question, is it God’s will for me to be healed, for me to be whole. It is God’s will for His children to be healed. Jesus said, if you have seen me, you have seen the Father, He also said, I only do those things which I see my Father doing. In other words, ever thing that Jesus said, everything that Jesus did, was and is the revealed will of God, for all men, for all ages! And that includes healing for your body. For several weeks now I have been teaching a series in our church on this particular subject and we have seen several people healed simply as they have heard the Word preached and faith rose up in their hearts and they received their healing. Are you in need of healing? Have you gotten a bad report from the doctor’s that says they can’t help you? Do you know someone, a friend, a family member who needs healing in their body? Then let me invite you to come to our next service, Sunday Feb. 20th at 10:30. We will have a very special guest, healing evangelist Glen Brown, of Glen Brown Miracle Ministries. He has been called by God to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit bringing miracles, signs, and wonders, to a lost and dying world and to proclaim the love of God in people’s lives. Come and experience the power and the manifestation of God’s presence as we worship and proclaim His Name. Well but Pastor Chris, what if I bring someone and they don’t get healed? What if you bring them and they do get healed!
