• This election year we might see a lot of girouettism from politicians. This means they may change their position on issues in order to follow popular opinion. It’s interesting to note that the French word for weather vane is girouette, a device that features a little rooster that goes back and forth, depending on the way of the winds. A Conundrum, Wrapped in an Enigma, Wrapped in a Conundrum – FIP

Noxious, horrible, deadly, frustrating, heartless, nasty, not right . . . are terms used to describe this disease. Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) has a ~100% mortality rate and no treatment has proven effective to date. “The mean survival time after definitive diagnosis was 16 days.” If the affected cat is healthy and has a good immune system he will die much quicker. If the affected cat is sick or immune compromised the disease does not spread quickly and the disease lingers. The disease mimics many of the common and uncommon diseases that cats acquire.

The disease is caused by a corona virus. There are 4 common corona viruses that are contagious among cats and they live in the gastrointestinal tract usually causing a self-limiting diarrhea. FIP is a deadly mutation of any of the four common corona viruses.

Most cats have the common corona viruses and only a select few cause the virus to change into the killing form. The FIP virus once acquired does not spread readily amongst other cats in a group unless there is over-crowding, excessive stress or a particularly ‘hot’ strain.

FIP has a chameleon nature . . . if you think it should act one way it will act another. There are two forms: a wet form that primary surfaces with fluid loss into organs and body cavities due to the destruction of the blood vessel walls and the dry form which can linger for months to years showing a variety of clinical signs – none that are definitive.

Veterinary science has yet to develop a simple, reliable test for FIP. A definitive diagnosis antemortem can be extremely challenging. Having a virus that mimics so many other diseases and syndromes makes attempts at diagnosis and treatment very difficult. The diagnostic gold standard is biopsy with histopathology/Immunhistochemistry.

Getting the right diagnostic samples usually requires exploratory surgery or a postmortem examination.

New research by Dr. Gary Whittaker at Cornell University may lead to a reliable diagnostic test in the future. The research involves getting the genomes of the 4 non-disease forming corona viruses and comparing them with the mutated FIP virus forms.

Locating the differences may help in developing a very sensitive, simple diagnostic test. If a weakness in the virus can be found then new treatments can be developed.

The bottomline: FIP sucks and cats die!

A: I think you should go ahead and schedule the fireplace cleaning. Worrying about the possibility that the cleaning company will charge you more than usual is silly when you can get a written estimate before they start the work, and compare it to other services in town.

Plus, June is a slower season for chimney and fireplace cleaners, compared to fall when homeowners are in a hurry to get their fireplaces ready for the cold weather. The benefit to you is that you can have greater choice of the day and time you want them to come in and service the chimney. Why Does My Tooth Hurt Only When I Chew?

Q. Sometimes when I’m chewing, there’s a sharp pain. It goes away quickly, and may not come back for weeks. Nothing else bothers the tooth. When it happens, it’s like hitting my “funny bone”. Should I be concerned?

A. Yes! You may have a condition known as “Cracked Tooth Syndrome”, which can be very painful and cause you to avoid chewing on that entire side of your mouth.

Q. Why does my tooth hurt when I bite “just right”, but not all the time?

A.

If the crack extends into the pulp (nerve), or into sensitive dentin, chewing with just the right amount of force, or in just the right spot can cause microscopic movement of the tooth structure at the crack. The pulp becomes irritated, causing a sharp, shooting pain. The pain usually is gone in an instant, until you bite “just right” once again.

Q. What caused the crack in my tooth?

A. Cracks are small fractures that typically develop as a result of excessive biting pressure.

Some people like to chomp on ice, nuts, jaw breakers, pencils, and other hard things.

Cindy Rose Bruxism (clenching or grinding habit) is a major cause of Cracked Tooth Syndrome. Untreated decay and large fillings weaken the tooth structure and make the tooth more susceptible to fracture. Silver/mercury (amalgam) fillings can expand and crack the tooth. Trauma or sudden impact to the tooth may crack the tooth – from sports injuries or biting on a hidden hard object in food.

Q. Can Cracked Tooth Syndrome get worse?

Q. Yes! Cracked Tooth Pain can cause the tooth to be sensitive to cold, and in time, bacteria can spread down the crack and infect the pulp. If the crack splits down into the root, the tooth usually cannot be restored, requiring extraction.

Q. When should I see a dentist?

Q. Sooner than later! Cracked Tooth Pain does not go away.

Telling your dentist early-on is important. Left untreated, the crack may become worse and more difficult to treat – or require extraction.

Q. What can the dentist do?

Q. The dentist will determine which tooth is involved and diagnose the problem. The diagnosis determines the treatment.

Treatment may require simply adjusting the bite, but most cases require capping or crowning the tooth to surround the crack and stop the micro movements of the tooth during chewing. More severe situations may require endodontic therapy (root canal).

The black tees or the tips are generally the longest set up for the course. these tees should be used be the best golfers and professionals The next set of tees up are usually the blues and these are 400 to 500 yards shorter. These tees are best suited for a very good player that likes a challenge probably a 12 handicap or less. Then we get to the White tees which should be used by most of the general public.

The next set of tees would be the seniors&ladies these are usually red. Recently a lot of courses have a set of junior tees ahead of the red tees this is to promote junior golf. All of this leads to the Question which set of tees should I play? My answer is the first time out on a new course play the set one ahead of your ability level.
