• The three sisters were a vital part of sustaining many civilizations. The beans and corn made a complete protein, and the squash supplied potassium, omega 3s and beta carotene. If meat and other foods were scarce, these plants fed many families. This was one of the first examples of “companion plantings” where each plant helps the other. The corn stalks supply climbing support for the beans and shade for the squash during the hottest parts of the day. The large leaves of the squash shade the ground to help keep the weed populations in check and deter wildlife. The beans enrich the soil with nitrogen, helping the corn and squash to grow well. turn the page for more!

• Early colonists on the East Coast learned a lot from the Massachuset Indians. Askutasquash means “eaten raw or uncooked” and is the tribe’s term referring to the collection of vegetables we now know as squash. Early colonists were taught by the Massachusets to grow the “three sisters” to sustain life. The three sisters refer to beans, corn and squash grown together in a “family” hill.

Home gardeners are busy this time of year in all areas of North America, and even where the growing season is very short, “squash” plants are often a favorite because they thrive. Let’s take a good look at the group of plants called askutasquash by the Massachuset Indians.

SQUASH THAT THOUGHT! (continued): • All squash types — and there are many — are members of the Cucurbitaceae or the gourd family. There are two subdivisions of the genus Cucurbita, to which squash belong: tender-skinned summer squash and hard-skinned winter squash. Pumpkins, from the tiniest to giants, belong to the winter squash family. • Most North Americans have grown up with summer squash, including zucchini and yellow squash, and eaten it raw, sautéed, stir-fried, grilled or breaded and fried. These tender, easy-to-grow vegetables are staples in most home gardens. • While summer squash have been favorites for years with gardeners, winter squash have suffered a popularity slump in the past several decades. Winter squash was very important to early settlers and on the American frontier. It has an excellent “keeping” quality and was a staple for root cellars. Winter squash would be harvested in late summer and fall and kept for months, allowing families to eat vitamin-rich vegetables during the cold winter months.

• Today, with more emphasis on sustainability, winter squash are becoming very popular again. With more interest in purchasing local produce, farmers’ markets and home gardens are helping to reignite the appeal of eating vitamin-rich winter squash. Beta-carotene with its antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties, vitamin C, potassium, dietary fiber, B vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids all come with the addition of squash to our diets. • So think squash are only available in yellow, green and orange? Think again! Visit local markets and fairs in the summer; you are sure to see some strange looking squash that are not only oddly shaped but also oddly colored. • Squash come in tan, orange, blue, green, even pink. They can be striped or solid colors and smooth or dimpled. • Summer squash are fragile, bruise easily and don’t keep very long. They are at their peak from July until September. Winter squash ripen with hard shells; some so hard that an ax or cleaver is required to get to the edible insides. They are at their prime from September until February. • Australian blue pumpkins and squash are rarely seen in North America but are the “norm” for the vegetable family “Down Under.” These “Blue Belt” plants are natives of Uruguay and Argentina and are also grown in South Africa. • Blue Hubbards and blue bananas as well as Queensland blue and other pumpkins are enjoyed in Australia. A couple of popular treats for Aussies are Queensland blue scones at teatime and the rather odd “Grabben Gullen Pie.” The pie is made Continued on page 5

Our practice gets calls from frantic owners everyday about lost cats. More than 10 million pets are lost each year, 90% won’t be returned home without proper identification. Most of these pets are indoor only companions that escape into the wilds. Lost indoor pets are at greatest risk of never being return to their family and most that are not identified at humane shelters are euthanized after a 5 day holding period. The mistaken assumption that indoor pets never get lost is wrong. A third of all pets, including “indoor only” cats and dogs, will become lost during their lifetime. If an indoor pet does get outdoors they have no “street smarts” and usually end up dead. As soon as your pet is presumed missing take immediate action. Search your neighborhood, talk to neighbors to alert them – most cats are within a block of home, dogs roam much further. Call the local veterinary hospitals, humane shelters, and emergency hospitals to get the word out. Even with this effort many found pets are mis-identified and never get returned home because of communication/identification problems. Is there a better way to help get your pet home? Yes, microchipping all cats and dogs give owners, police/ animal control, veterinarians, and humane shelters positive identification. Once this is known the owners and lost pet can be reunited. The majority of veterinary hospitals, humane shelters, and animal control officials have the capacity to scan lost pets for microchips. There are two popular microchips available: Home Again and Bayer. Both work very well and current scanners can read both chips. Implanted microchips have a unique 10-15 digit alpha-numeric code that identifies that specific individual. Microchips need a scanner to read the identification code and they are not a GPS tracking system. If your pet is stolen microchipping gives police/animal control positive identification. Proving a stolen pet is yours sometimes can be very hard. I will talk about the microchip system we use: Home Again. Once activated there is Lifetime Passive Recovery in place. The first year of service for $14.99 includes the following: 1. Complimentary Lost Pet Insurance: $3,000 per year for emergency medical treatment ($50 deductible) once PetFirst is activated. 2. Free Access to the 24/7 Poison Control Hotline – if your pet is poisoned you have free access to the ASPCA poison control hotline – a $55 dollar value. 3. Lost Pet Alerts – if your pet gets lost, call the Home Again Alert Line and they will send out lost alerts to vet clinics, humane shelters, and pet rescue members. You will also get an e-mailed list and phone numbers of all the humane shelters in your area. Microchipping is one of the best ways to protect your pet if it gets lost. Losing a pet is a heartbreaking experience. The return of a lost pet is one of the biggest joys of life. Dr. James K. • Did you know that you can eat the flowers of some squash? Try zucchini flowers stuffed with ground meat and braised — yummy and different. The seeds, tender shoots and even leaves can be eaten on many types of squash. • Many people make harvest centerpieces and front porch and door decorations from squash in the fall. Some of the interesting varieties to include in these are carnival, fairytale and turban squash. • Carnival squash are a type of acorn squash with interesting colorations: cream colored with orange spots, pale green with dark green spots and even vertical stripes. • The fairytale squash is, as you may guess, shaped like Cinderella’s pumpkin coach. • Turban squash looks like a turban (or hat) on top. As an interesting replacement for an ordinary bowl, the top can be removed and soup served from inside this squash. • While this Tidbits addresses some interesting members of the squash family, much more information is available to squash growers and eaters. An excellent book for “cucurbitaceans” (defined by the book author as “a person who regards pumpkins or squash with deep, often rapturous love”) is “The Compleat Squash” by Amy Goldman. It’s an interesting read for gardeners and those who love to cook and eat squash!
OVERCOMING THE ODDS:
ANDREA BOCELLI When Andrea Bocelli was a tiny baby, only a few months old, his parents became aware of terrible pain he suffered in his beautiful blue eyes. They enlisted the aid of many specialists in their home country, Italy, for guidance, and Bocelli was diagnosed with congenital bilateral glaucoma, a disease that would lead to total blindness. • Bocelli’s parents sought help from many doctors and even people who claimed to be healers. Because of the pain, it was hard to keep baby Bocelli calm. One day while in the hospital, he became unusually calm. He could hear music in the adjoining room, and it made a true difference in his countenance. From that point on, his family and friends began giving gifts of music to the young Bocelli. Q: I keep reading about there being a remake of “Red Dawn” in the works (with no release Ryan Harris date in sight), and I wondered how stars of the original 1984 version felt about this? I have my doubts they’ll be able to pull it off -- the original is such a cult classic. -- Brandi R., Erie, Pa. A: I spoke with Lea Thompson, who played Erica in the original movie, and she also is a little iffy about the remake. “I have my doubts, clearly,” she said, “because they haven’t released it yet although it’s supposedly been done for ages. I’ll be really interested to see it. One of the really amazing things about the original ‘Red Dawn’ is that there were no special effects in terms of computer-generated effects. Everything that happened really happened, which makes it more of a visceral nightmare. Sometimes some things left to the imagination are actually more haunting.” You can catch Lea starting July 30 in Hallmark Movie Channel’s “The Cabin,” where she plays a single mom who brings her kids to Scotland for fun and games, and for her, a little unexpected romance. She also stars in ABC Family’s “Switched at Birth,” and is featured in December’s Oscar contender “J. Edgar,” which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Josh Lucas, Judi Dench and Naomi Watts. *** Q: I can’t believe Chris Meloni left “Law and Order: SVU”! Who will they get to replace him? -Anna F., Fresno, Calif. A: “Cold Case” alum Danny Pino is set to fill Detective Stabler’s absence. As “SVU” enters its 13th season, Mariska Hargitay has opted for a reduced role, having signed on for only the first 13 episodes of the new season. So, to help fill that void, actress Kelli Giddish (“Chase” and “Past Life”) has been cast as a new detective as well. *** Q: Are there are plans to bring Stephenie Meyers’ sci-fi novel “The Host” to the big screen? -- Selena F., via e-mail A: Open Road films announced that the big-screen adaptation of Stephenie’s apocalyptic book will be released March 29, 2013. The movie stars Saoirse Ronan (“The Lovely Bones” and “Atonement”) as Melanie Stryder, and it is scheduled to begin shooting this February in Louisiana and New Mexico. *** Q: Who is going to be the new boss on “The Office”? -- Janie P., via e-mail A: As of this writing, reports say James Spader is in negotiations to pick up where Steve Carell left off. This got me to thinking: Who would be a perfect foil to play James’ wife? None other than Beth Littleford. I asked Beth what she thought of the idea, and she is on board, stating: “I’d love to play his wife. I’ve had a thing for James Spader for 25-plus years. Blame ‘Tuff Turf’ (and also Steff, the sexy, arrogant yuppie from “Pretty in Pink”). Then again, I’d happily play Dwight Schrute’s wife, Stanley Hudson’s wife or Phyllis Vance’s life partner.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Scott McQueen Millions of years ago in the shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa a unique combination of metamorphic rocks deposits grew into precious crystals beneath the weight of the great mountain. For millenniums they were unknown to man until one day in the late 1960s some passing Masai shepherds saw a sparkle of light reflecting off of some crystals that were finally exposed to the sun. They took them along, shared them with the world, and Tanzanite, an extraordinary gemstone found only in Tanzania, was revealed. The search for the blue stone surrounded by a fine hint of purple continues today mainly in smallish mines – only in Tanzania. For the most part only small grains are found, but from time to time mineworkers discover a larger crystal. Though only recently discovered it has become one of the most coveted gemstones in the world. The deep blue with the slightly purple tinge of tanzanite makes it one of the most flamboyant and elegant gemstones available. Own a tanzanite gemstone and you will immediately and dramatically distinguish yourself from the conventional gemstone collector. • Living among the olive groves and vineyards of the Tuscan countryside in Italy, Bocelli’s parents wanted the best for their son. They enrolled him in a boarding school several hours away from their home in order for him to be taught Braille at a young age. Even though it was difficult for him to live apart from his family, he remained emotionally close to them. It was at the school that his musical talents began to be noticed. He received musical instruction there, and his singing ability was recognized at the school as well as at church. His parents encouraged his musical abilities with piano lessons at age 6. He also learned to play the saxophone, trumpet, flute, trombone, harp, guitar and drums. His beautiful voice, self-described as “a modern but old-fashioned tenor,” is now recognized worldwide.

• When Bocelli was 12 years old, he was hit in the eye by a soccer ball while playing. The hit took away his sight permanently. • After completing primary and secondary school, Bocelli received a law degree from the University of Pisa. He played at piano bars during college to pay for singing lessons from Franco Corelli. He also received lessons from Maestro Luciano Bettarini. • Bocelli’s big break into music came when he won a singing competition at the Sanremo Festival in 2004. Since that time, he has sold over 65 million records in opera, classical and pop genres. He has collaborated with other artists for recordings and has been a major contributor to relief efforts for Haiti and other places that have suffered natural disasters. • “My Christmas,” Bocelli’s Christmas album released in 2009, has sold more than four million copies. • He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in March 2010 and is one of just a few Italians to receive this honor. • An interesting theater that Bocelli was instrumental in establishing, the Teatro del Silenzio (or Theatre of Silence), opened in his hometown of Lajatico, Tuscany, in 2006. Only one concert is performed there each year, in July, and the theater remains silent for the remainder of the year. Bocelli, the honorary president, agreed to sing at the theater once a year for the first five years. • Bocelli was at one time an agnostic but changed through the years, even performing for the Pope. The humble man gifted with the beautiful voice has said, “The more I immerse myself in singing, the less I understand. I only know that God has given me a voice which allows me to express what I feel and in this sense, I believe I can describe it as a recognizable voice...”

Some Misconceptions About Renter’s Insurance Approximately 60% of Americans that rent their home, don’t have renter’s insurance. Why? It might be because of some common myths about renter’s insurance. Let’s review some of the common ones: Like homeowners insurance, it’s expensive. Renters insurance is much cheaper than homeowners insurance. The standard renter’s policy is around $120 per year and some estimates are even lower. That price includes coverage for your belongings and $100,000 in liability protection. Don’t forget, a renter’s policy will normally get you extra savings on your auto insurance too! My landlord has insurance, so I don’t need it. While your landlord probably has insurance to cover the building, your possessions aren’t the landlord’s problem and aren’t covered by the landlord’s policy. Not to mention, if there’s a loss at your house and you aren’t able to live there while it’s renovated, a renter’s policy will cover your new place until you can get back in your home. My roommate has renters insurance, so I don’t need it. Some policies cover roommates, but most don’t. So you better ask your roomie to make sure. Even still, how are you going to split the deductible? What if your stuff is more valuable or if only your stuff gets damaged and he doesn’t want to file a claim? Having your own policy simplifies a lot of things. I don’t have enough stuff worth insuring. Do you own a new laptop computer? Or a flat-screen TV? When we think of valuables in a home, we often look no further than furniture and major appliances. We often forget about all the little things that add up like clothes, shoes, jackets, kitchen supplies, etc. These are just some of the benefits that a renter’s policy offers. Renter’s policies are the best “bang for your buck” policies out there.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver ¥ It was Danish author, philosopher and theologian Soren Kierkegaard who made the following sage observation: “People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.” ¥ After the release of Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film “The Birds,” pet stores all over the country saw a sharp decline in the sales of pet birds. ¥ You might be surprised to learn that during the first airing of the original “Star Trek” series, no episode ranked higher than No. 52 in the ratings. ¥ According to the Guinness Book of Records, it was poor Donna Griffiths who suffered the longest sneezing fit ever recorded. On Jan. 13, 1981, the 12-year-old girl started sneezing, and she continued sneezing every day for more than two and a half years. ¥ If you’re like the average American, you eat 20 quarts of ice cream every year. ¥ I’m sure you’ve heard the term “dimwit” used as an insult, but, as it turns out, the word is more descriptive than derogatory. The human brain actually uses less power than a 100-watt light bulb. ¥ A man named Patrick Hooligan lived in London in the mid-1800s. He was such a notorious troublemaker that his name is still used today to refer to ruffians and hoodlums. ¥ In 1909, in England, one Lord Barbazon took a pig up for a ride in an airplane. Bovines seemingly got short shrift; the first cow didn’t take to the air until 1930. It was in February of that year that a cow was loaded into an airplane in St. Louis. It was milked during the flight, and the milk was parachuted to earth. *** Thought for the Day: “He’s turned his life around. He used to be depressed and miserable. Now he’s miserable and depressed.” -- David Frost

Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Is Your Portfolio Like a Baseball Team? If you’re a baseball fan, you’re no doubt aware that the MLB All-Star Game is being played on July 12. But while you’ll probably appreciate the grace Cindy Rose and skill of the players, you may not realize just how much a baseball team can teach you about other aspects of life — such as investing. Specifically, consider the following characteristics: Consistency — Baseball teams need to be consistent. They choose quality players and must have the patience and discipline to stick with those players during slumps. As an investor, you should choose quality investments and have the patience and discipline to stick with them over the long haul. Diversification — A baseball team doesn’t have just one type of player — it contains pitchers, catchers, infielders and outfielders. Your portfolio also needs to be diversified because if you own only a single type of investment, and a market downturn strikes that asset class particularly hard, your portfolio could take a big hit. Owning a diversified mix of stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other investments can help reduce the effect of market volatility on your holdings. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Unity — While a baseball team contains a diverse collection of players, they all strive toward a common goal. And the mix of investments in your portfolio needs to work together to help achieve the various goals you’ve established, such as a comfortable retirement, college for your children and a legacy for your family. To work toward your individual objectives, you will need to create an investment mix that’s based on your risk tolerance, time horizon, family situation and other factors. Flexibility — While every member of a professional baseball team is a good player, one might be better than another in a given situation. For instance, a faster runner might pinch-run for someone else. And as you move on in your “game” of life, you will need flexibility in making your investment decisions. As one example, when you near retirement, you may want to reduce your exposure to risk somewhat, so you might decide to replace some — but certainly not all — of your growth-oriented vehicles with investments that can offer greater protection of your principal. Good management — Even the best group of baseball players needs a manager to guide them and make decisions during a ballgame. And to help you make investment choices during different times in your life, you might benefit from working with a financial professional — someone who knows your risk tolerance, investment preferences and long-term aspirations. You may never find yourself surrounded by the greatest ballplayers in the world — but remembering these traits can help keep your portfolio “in the game.” This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Churches and Non-Profit Organizations... Advertise for only $15 per WEEK!!! For details call, The Bible tells us in Proverbs 18:21 that “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” (NLT) Many Christians today do not believe this scripture. How do I know that? The same people who are sitting in our churches, saying “Amen”, and “preach it”, are the same ones who when the service is over talk about how bad their finances are, how bad the economy is, if things don’t turn around I don’t know what I am going to do. They agree in principle with the scripture when it is being preached then turn right around and start to speak doubt and fear and unbelief and then wonder why their life is so miserable. The book of James tells us that if a man is able to control his tongue he will control his entire life. He gives us examples saying that just like a horse, when we put a bit in his mouth we are able to turn him at our discretion, just like a huge ship that is turned by a very small rudder, what comes out of the mouth of a man determines the direction of his life! And again I would say that most do not believe this, and my proof to you is what you hear coming out of their mouths on a daily basis. Proverbs 18:21 says “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” (NLT) James goes on to say that the tongue is like a spark or a match that sets things on fire. He says it like a little spark that starts a huge forest fire. Anyone remember the Hayman fire in June of 2002? One tiny match started the biggest forest fire in the history of Colorado. It did $40 million dollars in damage, it burned 133 homes, 5,340 people had to be evacuated, and the smoke and ash could be seen over much of the entire state. The Bible tells us that our tongues are just like that little match, what we say has a huge impact on our future. Here is a phrase that might help you to become aware of what is coming out of your mouth and to help you to begin to speak only life over your life and over your circumstances. That phrase is, IF YOU SAY SO! Let me give you some examples of what I mean. It seems like every fall when I turn the heat on, I come down with a sinus infection….IF YOU SAY SO! I have tried every diet on the planet and as soon as I stop I put 10lbs back on, I just can’t lose weight. My doctor told me I need to begin an exercise program but I just hate to exercise….IF YOU SAY SO! Give this a try during the week and see what is coming out of your mouth, is it life or is it death? More next week!

Little Larry attended a horse auction with his father. He watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse's legs and rump, and chest. After a few minutes, Larry asked, 'Dad, why are you doing that?' His father replied, 'Because when I'm buying horses, I have to make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy. Larry, looking worried, said, 'Dad, I think the UPS guy wants to buy Mom ....' They Walk Among Us! Some guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying: 'Free to good home. You want it, you take it.' For three days the fridge sat there without anyone looking twice. He eventually decided that people were too mistrustful of this deal. So he changed the sign to read: 'Fridge for sale $50.' The next day someone stole it! While looking at a house, my brother asked the estate agent which direction was north because he didn't want the sun waking him up every morning. She asked, 'Does the sun rise in the north?' My brother explained that the sun rises in the east and has for sometime. She shook her head and said, 'Oh, I don't keep up with all that stuff......' I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area and went to the lost luggage office and reported the loss. The woman there smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and said I was in good hands. 'Now,' she asked me, 'Has your plane arrived yet?'..... They Walk Among Us!

The math teacher saw that Larry wasn't paying attention in class. She called on him and said, 'Larry! What are 2 and 4 and 28 and 44?' Larry quickly replied, 'NBC, FOX, ESPN and the Cartoon Network!' Larry's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. 'Yes,' said the policeman. 'The detectives want very badly to capture him.' Larry asked, "Why didn't you keep him when you took his picture?"

A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, 'Everyone who thinks they're stupid, stand up!' After a few seconds, Little Larry stood up.
