TIDBITS® BRINGS YOU
SUM-SUM-SUMMERTIME! by Kathy Wolfe
“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy” goes the old Gershwin song. This week, Tidbits brings out all kinds of summer facts to get you through these long, hot days. • “Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer,” crooned Nat King Cole in 1963 when this catchy tune hit the Billboard charts. Cole further vocalized about a “romantic moon, bikinis, picnic baskets, soda, pretzels and beer,” closing out with, “You’ll wish that summer could always be here.”

SUMMERTIME (continued): • According to the ancient Gregorian calendar, July was the fifth month and consequently was called Quintilis, the Roman word for “fifth.” When the Romans later moved the beginning of the year from March 1 to January 1, July became the seventh month. Because Julius Caesar was born during this month, the Roman Senate changed the name to July. • July is a big month for Independence Days — the U.S. celebrates on July 4, while Canada observes July 1. National independence is observed on July 5 in Venezuela, on July 9 in Argentina and July 14 in France. The holiday in Belgium is July 21 and in Peru, July 28. • The first patent ever registered in the United States was in July of 1790 and was granted to Samuel Hopkins for his new process of making potash, an ingredient in soap, glass and gunpowder. • When the minimum wage was established in America in July of 1933, you could expect to earn 33 cents an hour. • The name of Rod Laver is not a familiar one unless you are an avid tennis fan. In July of 1969, Laver became the first person to win four Wimbledon titles. • International Lefthanders Day is set aside every August 13 for the estimated 13 percent of the world’s population who is left-handed. Lefthanders International publishes a magazine and offers a catalog packed full of products aimed at “lefties.” • According to legend, St. Lawrence of Rome, a friend to the poor, was roasted to death on an iron grill for distributing church property to the needy. As a result, southern Europeans consider it civilized to eat only cold meat on this martyr’s feast day, August 10.

• Summer has been a historical time for the English Channel. Frenchman Louis Bleriot accomplished the first flight across the English Channel in July of 1909 in 37 minutes, piloting his 25-hp plane. He received an award of 1,000 English pounds for his efforts but apparently not much fame, since the name of Louis Bleriot is unknown to the average person. The first woman to fly across the Channel is honored on August 2. Harriet Quimby Day is set aside to commemorate this brave woman’s flying feats, including being the first American woman to earn a pilot’s license. Sad to say, Harriet was killed in an airshow accident just three months after her historic English Channel adventure.

Rubies are actually rarer than diamonds and can be found in Burma, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Afghanistan and India. In Sanskrit, the ancient language of India, the word for ruby was Ratnaraj, which translates “king of gems.” According to legend, wearers of rubies will receive wisdom, happiness and health. • Women’s rights took a step forward in July of 1848, when the first women’s rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York. Resolutions presented at the gathering maintained that a man should not withhold a woman’s rights, take her property or refuse to allow her to vote. • The pilot of the Enola Gay, the B-29 bomber that dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, in August of 1945, was 30-yearold Paul W. Tibbets. • It was during the summer of 1974 that Richard Nixon became the only U.S. President to resign from office. He was avoiding probable impeachment proceedings stemming from his cover-up of the illegal activities of his staff in the Watergate scandal. He was granted a full pardon for all federal crimes one month later by his successor Gerald Ford. • The founder of L’Oreal cosmetics, chemist Eugene Schueller, is credited with the invention of sunscreen in 1936. If you’re using sunscreen with an SPF of 15, it is providing protection from 93 percent of the sun’s UV rays, while the SPF-30 variety will provide 97 percent protection. Manufacturers advise against using any sunscreen that is more than a year old. Statistics indicate that only about 30 percent of teenage males apply sunscreen on a regular basis, compared to 46 percent of females of the same age. • Going fishing on your summer vacation? According to “The Old Farmer’s Almanac,” the best times for fishing are when the ocean tides are “restless, one hour before and one hour after high and low tides.” In addition, when the wind is from the west rather than from the north or east, fishing will be better, as well as when the barometer is steady or rising, says the “Almanac.” • July 19 is Flitch Day, when according to an old custom, bacon was given to any couple who could prove they had lived in harmony and fidelity for one year. • The 40 days from July 3 to August 11 are the hottest days of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and are known as “Dog Days.” The technical term for this period is “Canicular Days,” deriving its name from the Dog Star, Sirius.

Q: Noah Wyle’s new show, “Falling Skies,” is wonderful. Do you know if it has been re- Ryan Harris newed for a second season? -- Theresa D., Harrisburg, Pa. A: You can bet your sweet bippy that TNT has renewed cable’s No. 1 new series for another season. The alien-invasion saga, which airs Sundays at 10 p.m. (ET/PT), also stars Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton and Drew Roy, and is executive-produced by Steven Spielberg. TNT has ordered 10 episodes for the second season, which will air summer 2012. *** Q: I just saw a preview for the remake of “Dallas,” which excites me to no end. I was wondering if any of the other older nighttime soaps have plans for a remake, like “Falcon Crest” or “Knots Landing”? -- Diedre D., via e-mail A: So far, no plans are in the works, but of course, you can never say never. I spoke with Nicollette Sheridan recently, who co-starred as Paige Matheson in the sudster “Dallas” spinoff, and she told me: “I haven’t heard of anyone speaking about doing that. I think ‘Dallas’ was always flashier than ‘Knots Landing.’ “’Knots Landing’ was a down-home, simpler, morepained version. Very real people going through very real situations. But so far, no, I haven’t heard of any plans for doing that.” For now, you can catch Nicollette in the Hallmark Channel original movie, “Honeymoon for One,” which premieres Saturday, Aug. 13. *** Q: I’ve seen commercials for a new police drama on Lifetime, but I didn’t catch the name of the show. Could tell me about it? -- Derek F., Fort Lauderdale, Fla. A: You’re thinking of “Against the Wall,” which is part police procedural, part family drama. It centers on a family of Chicago police officers, and stars Rachael Carpani, Brandon Quinn, Treat Williams and Kathy Baker. The show airs Sundays at 10 p.m. (ET/PT). I spoke with Brandon Quinn, who plays Richie Kowalski, about the show: “The folks at Lifetime are really trying to re-identify themselves, and this show is definitely unlike anything else they have right now. It’s going to put them on the map. I’m really proud of this show. I would stack it up against any other show on network television right now.” *** Q: I absolutely love the series “Bored to Death.” I read somewhere that Ted Danson is leaving the show to star in another show. Please tell me this isn’t true! -- Hadley F., via e-mail A: What you heard is only half-true. Ted is indeed going to star in another show; however, he won’t leave “Bored to Death.” He will remain a series regular on the HBO comedy that also stars Zach Galifianakis and Jason Schwartzman, and is slated to return for its third season this fall. Ted also has joined the cast of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” where he’ll play the new supervisor for the Las Vegas CSI team. “CSI” returns for its 12th season Sept. 21. Scott McQueen Purple and gold! Sounds like the Minnesota Vikings, right? Perhaps so, but it is also how you describe the lovely colors of ametrine. With amertine you can have two rich colors for the price of one…and it’s inexpensive… especially considering the fact that it comes from only one mine in the world – the Anahi Mine in Bolivia. This history of ametrine is romantic and exotic. The original ametrine mine in Bolivia was received by a Spanish conquistador as a dowry upon marrying a princess named Anahi from the Avoreos tribe. He then introduced the gemstone to Europe by giving gifts to his Spanish queen. Ametrine is a very durable gemstone suited to a variety of jewelry uses. Most sizes and shapes are available but the color contrast is most pronounced in sizes of over seven carats. Beware your purchase of ametrine as low priced ametrine may be made from synthetic material. In 1994 a Russian laboratory perfected the industrial production of bicolored quartz crystals that are irradiated to bring out the typical ametrine colors.

The water was clear and calm as she lay on her surfboard and dangled her left arm in the water, watching the many turtles in the area. With no warning, her life was forever changed. A 14-foot (4.3-meter) tiger shark attacked, severing her arm just below the shoulder. It was later determined that a bite just two inches farther in would have claimed her life. As it was, she lost over 60 percent of her blood. • Hamilton watched the water around her change to a bright red, but somehow this young teen managed to stay calm enough to paddle toward the beach assisted by her friend, who, upon reaching shore, created a tourniquet from a surfboard leash. Ironically, when they reached the hospital, Hamilton was wheeled into an operating room where her father had been scheduled to have knee surgery that morning.

25+ Years Experience
• After seven days of recovery in the hospital, Hamilton returned home. Less than a month later, she was surfing again, getting used to a whole new sense of balance in her body.

• Three short months after the attack, Hamilton returned to competition, taking fifth place in her first time out. A year after, just shy of her 15th birthday, she nabbed first place in the NSSA national championships, her first national title. She was the recipient of 2004’s Best Comeback Athlete ESPY Award and a special courage award that was presented at the 2004 Teen Choice Awards. • In 2004, Hamilton recorded her experiences in a biography entitled “Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board.” It is the story of how a positive attitude, perseverance and a strong faith in God accounted for her recovery. She has published five non-fiction books since the attack, with the goal of explaining how adversity can change a person’s life perspective. • In 2007, at age 17, Hamilton achieved the dream of turning professional and continues full time on the pro surfing circuit. In 2009, she appeared on the game show “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” and in 2010 was featured on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover Home Edition.” She also participates in humanitarian projects, including having helped children orphaned by a tsunami to overcome their fear of water. “Friends of Bethany” is a new effort of hers, a foundation that supports shark attack survivors and other amputees. The film version of her biography, “Soul Surfer,” was released in April of 2011, starring Anna Sophia Robb, Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt and Carrie Underwood.

8 Insurance Facts
For Advertising Call Tim (303)994-9683
If you are involved in a traffic collision, try to remain calm, and follow these steps: 1. Keep an Emergency Kit in Your Glove Compartment. Drivers should carry a cell phone, as well as pen and paper for taking notes, a disposable camera to take photos of the vehicles at the scene, and a card with information about medical allergies or conditions that may require special attention if there are serious injuries. Also, keep a list of contact numbers for law enforcement agencies handy. 2. Keep Safety First. Drivers involved in minor accidents with no serious injuries should move cars to the side of the road and out of the way of oncoming traffic. Leaving cars parked in the middle of the road or busy intersection can result in additional accidents and injuries. If a car cannot be moved, drivers and passengers should remain in the cars with seatbelts fastened for everyone’s safety until help arrives. Make sure to turn on hazard lights and set out cones, flares or warning triangles if possible. 3. Exchange Information. After the accident, exchange the following information: name, address, phone number, insurance company, policy number, driver license number and license plate number for the driver and the owner of each vehicle. If the driver’s name is different from the name of the insured, establish what the relationship is and take down the name and address for each individual. Also make a written description of each car, including year, make, model and color — and the exact location of the collision and how it happened. Finally, be polite but don’t tell the other drivers or the police that the accident was your fault, even if you think it was. 4. Photograph and Document the Accident. Use your camera to document the damage to all the vehicles. Keep in mind that you want your photos to show the overall context of the accident so that you can make your case to a claims adjuster. If there were witnesses, try to get their contact information; they may be able to help you if the other drivers dispute your version of what happened. 5. File An Accident Report. Although law enforcement officers in many locations may not respond to accidents unless there are injuries, drivers should file a state vehicle accident report, which is available at police stations and often on the Department of Motor Vehicles Web site as a downloadable file. A police report often helps insurance companies speed up the claims process. 6. Know What Your Insurance Covers. The whole insurance process will be easier following your accident if you know the details of your coverage. For example, don’t wait until after an accident to find out that your policy doesn’t automatically cover costs for towing or a replacement rental car. Generally, for only a dollar or two extra each month, you can add coverage for rental car reimbursement, which provides a rental car for little or no money while your car is in the repair shop or if it is stolen. Check your policy for specifics. The final question in dealing with an accident is usually who will pay for the damages? If the accident was minor, you and the other drivers may decide to handle the damages yourselves without the involvement of an insurance company. But this isn’t always the best idea, for several reasons. While the other driver may agree to pay for the damage to your car on the day of the accident, he may see the repair bills and decide it’s too high. At this point, time has passed and your insurance company will have more difficulty piecing together the evidence if you file a claim. Also, keep in mind that you have no way of knowing whether another driver will change his mind and report the accident to his insurance company. He may even claim injuries that weren’t apparent at the scene of the accident. This means that your insurance company may end up paying him a hefty settlement, or worse yet, you could be dragged into a lawsuit. So make sure that your company has your version of what happened and check your policy — if the damages paid out by your insurance company are below a certain amount, the accident may not be considered chargeable. And you will avoid the penalty of a premium hike.

Blood-Sucking Parasites
Fleas and ticks are parasites that commonly feast on our pets and are found here in Colorado. Despite their size, these tiny creatures can cause many serious problems. In 99.9% of cases, Ctenocephalides felis, the cat flea, is the culprit among dogs and cats. Despite its name, the cat flea can feed on a variety of hosts. They are blood-sucking insects that can slowly drain an animal to death, especially if they’re smaller, younger or debilitated in some way. Heavy infestations have been known to kill dairy calves. Aside from flea anemia, fleas can also cause flea allergic dermatitis (a flea bite allergy), feline infectious anemia (a blood parasite transmitted by the flea), cat scratch fever/Bartonellosis (makes the human recipient of the scratch sick) and tapeworm infections (an intestinal parasite transmitted when the flea is ingested during grooming). Contrary to popular belief, a purely indoor animal can have fleas. Fleas actually thrive in the wellregulated temperatures of the home. They can also be present between the cracks of hard-wood floors, in addition to carpet. The life cycle of the flea is always active, but environmental temperatures control the speed of its progression. Therefore, flea control in the home should be continued in the winter months while the numbers are low, before the population starts to boom in the spring and summer. Ticks, like fleas, feed on a variety of different hosts. There are both hard and soft ticks. The adult female can engorge itself, increasing its weight to more than 100 fold. They are inactive in the winter. The diseases that can be contracted from ticks are Lyme disease, Babesiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Tick Paralysis, to name a few. Prompt removal of ticks can prevent disease transmission since it takes several hours of attachment for transmission. Check your pets regularly for ticks after coming in from a known inhabited area. They are usually found around the head, ears, neck and feet. Removal of a tick needs to be done in a way that assures complete removal of its head. Do not apply fire. After removal, there will be a local area of inflammation that should resolve within a week. There’s a multitude of products available for prevention or treatment of infestation by fleas and/or ticks. There are singular and combination products. There are products for the animal itself and products for the environment. There are those that are oral and those that are topical. There are pills, liquids, powders, sprays and collars. Some products kill the insects while others sterilize or cease development. Some products can be used on dogs but may be toxic to cats. DEET, the ingredient in many over-the-counter insecticides, is toxic to pets. Consult your family veterinarian for specific product recommendations. Rona Schmidt, DVM

As a nation, we appear to be getting nervous about retirement. We aren’t sure if we’ll have enough money, and we don’t know if we’ll be able to retire when we had originally planned. That’s why you may want to review your financial strategy both before and during retirement.

Before we look at some actions you might take, let’s get a sense of how concerned many Americans are about their future: Less confidence — The percentage of workers who are “not at all confident” about having enough money for a comfortable retirement is now at 27%, according to the 2011 Retirement Confidence Survey, sponsored by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. This figure is the highest level measured in the 21 years of the Retirement Confidence Survey. Later projected retirement age — Back in 1995, over half of those surveyed in a Gallup Poll said they expected to retire when they were under age 65, while about 15% thought they would retire after age 65. But in 2010, the same Gallup Poll showed that just 29% of survey respondents expected to retire before they reached 65, while 34% planned to work beyond 65. This lowered confidence and the expectation of having to work past 65 are due in part to the Great Recession and the housing market collapse, which combined to reduce the savings of many future retirees. You can’t control these types of factors, but you can do a lot to boost your prospects for a comfortable retirement — both before and after you retire. Before You Retire: Estimate your expenses. Try to estimate about how much money you’ll need each year of your retirement. Contribute to your retirement plans. Put as much as you can afford into your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 403(b) or 457(b) plan. Each time you get a raise, boost your annual contribution to your retirement plan. Also, try to fully fund your traditional or Roth Individual Retirement Account (IRA) each year. After You Retire: Evaluate your employment prospects. You may have retired from one career, but that doesn’t mean you can’t work part time, do some consulting or even open your own business. If you think you’d enjoy doing some type of work, the added income can obviously be quite helpful at this stage of your life. Decide when to take Social Security. You can start taking Social Security at any time from 62 to 70, but the longer you wait, the bigger your monthly payments. Your decision on when to take Social Security should be based on the amount of income you can expect from a pension or your investment portfolio, plus any income you might receive from employment. Determine your withdrawal rate. You’ll need to calculate how much you can safely withdraw from your various retirement accounts each year. Your withdrawal rate will depend on several factors, including your lifestyle, your estimated longevity, your other sources of income and the level of inflation. You may need to adjust your withdrawal rate periodically. These aren’t the only factors involved in preparing for, and living in, retirement, but they should give you a good idea of what you need to do to enjoy the lifestyle you’ve envisioned.

IT’S BETTER TO REVIEW YOUR ANNUITY THAN RETHINK YOUR RETIREMENT.
NO DOGMA; just God!
GOD IS NOT MAD AT YOU!!! Does that statement surprise you? If you listen to religious circles, popular belief, and rumor you most likely have heard this kind of thing. I have heard all kinds of things that God will do to you, He will make you sick, He will keep you poor, He will cause bad things to happen in your life, He caused that storm to come, He caused that earthquake, He caused that famine, He caused that flood, you fill in the blank. But if you will read the Bible, you will find just the opposite, God is not mad at you at all. Isaiah 54:10 (New Living Translation)” For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the Lord, who has mercy on you.” This may be earth shaking news for some of you but it is true. This is such good news that many people have a hard time believing it. People think back on all the wrong things they have done, the bad things that have gone on in their lives, and think… how could God not be mad at me for all those things, surely He will do something about it! Well, you right about that in a way…God did do something about it. He sent His son Jesus Christ to the cross. When Jesus went to the cross, he took all your sins, He took all your sicknesses, His body became so marred and disfigured, that He didn’t even look like a human being. But this very event is the one which has freed you and me, the very event that brought us a covenant of peace, it freed us from the wrath of God forever. Isaiah 53:1011 (New Living Translation) “But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands. 11 When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins”. The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross was enough to pay for your sins and mine. Sin now has no authority over you in any way! Jesus has paid the price and as far as God is concerned it is all over. All you have to do is accept this finished work, allow God to come into your life, come into your heart and change you forever. Let that Good News sink down deep inside of you, God is not mad at you, He loves you, He will always love you, and He sent His only son to die for you because of that love. That is awesome!

The Inside Secrets To Seller Financing When it comes to selling real estate, one of the biggest obstacles sellers face is a so-called “depressed” market. Even when a property is highly desirable, it can be hard to get the price you want in this real estate environment. You could end up losing a lot of time, money, and opportunities, waiting for a “perfect buyer” who may NEVER materialize! The traditional solution is to drop your asking price. But this common strategy doesn’t always work in your favor. In fact, it can work against you, making your home seem undesirable and your position seems weak. But there IS a way to turn this challenge into a profitable opportunity! The seller finance solution More and more home sellers are turning to private financing to sell properties quickly and at the best possible price. Why? Because it’s a great way to attract an untapped group of potential buyers looking to buy a home outside of conventional financing. Seller financing can put you back in the driver’s seat and turn ANY market into a SELLER’S DREAM! You see, there is a large percentage of first time home buyers who cannot get approved for bank funding because of their credit situation. These buyers will often offer to pay even MORE than the asking price for the opportunity to live the American dream of home ownership. Once you understand a few secrets to seller financing, you’ll know why these “credit challenged” folks can be your “perfect buyers” and provide a positive solution for ALL parties involved… 1. Seller financing can enable YOU to sell your home quickly and easily, at the price you want. 2. It gives the BUYER a chance to purchase a home that would otherwise be out of reach. 3. If a real estate agent is involved, it allows the agent to collect a commission from a sale that wouldn’t happen through traditional means. So everyone wins! Turning the sale into cash But what happens if the buyer does not put down a substantial down payment and the seller needs additional cash to purchase another property? That’s where the beauty of seller financing comes in. It’s possible for the seller – now the mortgage holder – to turn around and sell the mortgage note for a lump sum of case! It’s easier and more common than most people ever imagine! As a professional Note Finder, I specialize in helping holders of mortgage notes get immediate cash for their paper asset. In fact, if you or someone you know holds a mortgage note, I can help turn it into CASH right now!
