Through programming successes like “American Idol” (still the most watched series on television in the United States), “reality TV” has grown to be a huge part of the programming broadcast on both cable and network television. The emergence of reality programming as one of the most successful and profitable genres found on television would seem to suggest this is a relatively new invention. Actually, it stretches all the way back to the 1940s. Here we’ll recount a little about the history of this style of show, along with some things you might not know about reality programs in America and worldwide.

• In 1948, the first “reality show” aired. It was Allen Funt’s “Candid Camera,” a precursor to MTV’s popular prank show “Punk’d” (currently hosted by pop superstar Justin Bieber and a revolving rotation of young entertainers). Unlike “Punk’d,” which focuses on pranks played on celebrities, “Candid Camera” featured mild pranks played on everyday individuals, and captured their reactions. turn the page for more!

A “Reality” Check (continued): • “Candid Camera” actually emerged from another “reality show” from another medium, a 1947 radio version with the same concept called “Candid Microphone.” • “Candid Camera” was followed after each broadcast by another pioneer of reality TV, the Ted Mack talent search show, “Original Amateur Hour.” Ted Mack’s show televised amateurs competing before a live audience, who chose the winner. It was the first example of public voting determining the outcome of a TV show, predating “Idol” by decades. • The longest running reality show in the United States is “Cops,” which has been gracing our sets since 1989. • MTV likes to tout its series “The Real World” (a success since the early ‘90s and still going strong) as the father of what most think of as modern reality TV, but that distinction probably goes to PBS’ “An American Family.” The 1973 series followed a family as they went through a divorce. • “An American Life” was so influential that it inspired a well-reviewed cinematic satire by comedian and filmmaker, Albert Brooks. 1979’s “Real Life” follows a filmmaker (played by Brooks) who is so inspired by the success of the PBS series that he tries to replicate it with a different family, with unexpectedly dire results. • The incidence of reality programming on TV today is higher than it has ever been. One in four programs in primetime is reality based. In addition to its popularity with audiences, the genre is popular with TV executives for its cost-saving benefits. The average reality show costs about $500,000 per episode, compared to $2 million for a sitcom. • Although reality TV has been a viable genre for over six decades, it’s taken a while for the Emmys to take notice. The first award in the genre, “Outstanding Reality-Competition Series,” was given in 2003 to “The Amazing Race.” • In 2008, an additional category was added honoring “Best Reality TV Show Host.” It went to “Survivor” host Jeff Probst, who has since become a repeat winner in the category. • Reality shows aren’t just influential in the United States. Singer Susan Boyle’s 2009 audition on the UK’s popular show “Britain’s Got Talent” has been viewed 120 million times on YouTube. • Reality television has also reached the Muslim world. In 2010, a show called “Imam Muda” pitted contestants in a variety of challenges. These challenges included tests of Islamic theory, the counseling of teenagers and the recitation of the Quran. The winner received a job as an Imam, along with a free scholarship in Saudi Arabia and a new car.

Cat Q & A Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc

Early Socialization of Kittens Well socialized cats were likely well socialized kittens. Kittens learn from their mother’s calm or fearful attitude toward humans. Although feeding times are important in forming the human/cat bond, it is also vital to include playing, grooming, and stroking to develop a kitten’s trust of humans. Kittens usually suckle until 8 weeks of age but they may continue to suckle longer on littermates, inanimate objects, and humans for comfort and security. Orphaned kittens or those weaned too soon are more likely to exhibit inappropriate suckling behaviors later in life. Ideally kittens need to stay with their littermates until 12 weeks of age. Many behavioral problems that domestic cats have can be traced back to early poor socialization problems.

Kittens that fail to develop social skills usually have had an unstable kittenhood. Orphaning or early separation from mother and littermates has a profound effect in personality expression. Aggressive behavior, lack of litter box etiquette, inability to socialize with humans, and destructive behavior are a few unstable personality disorders that affect cats having a poor human/cat bond. Kittens that stay with mom and their littermates and that are handled daily during the first 7 weeks of life develop good social skills. Early positive nurturing leads to kittens that learn faster, are more curious and are more playful. The first two years in feline social development can be influenced by good experiences and positive human interaction. A loving home and stable lifestyle can change your cat’s behavior. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Baby boomer trend: asset-based long-term care insurance (Part 1 of 2) Life insurance policies that provide long-term care benefits are growing in popularity and attracting younger baby boomers anxious to protect their portfolios. Sales of the policies, when measured by premiums paid, grew 20 percent last year over 2010, and the number of lives covered increased 13.5 percent, according to research by the American Association for LongTerm Care Insurance. The association's annual study also showed that buyers are purchasing the policies at younger ages. Fifty-three percent of male buyers were under 65, compared to 48 percent of buyers in that age group in the previous year's study. Fifty percent of female buyers last year were under 65, up from 44 percent in 2010. "Generally these are people with high net worths who can self-insure for long-term care, but prefer to transfer the risk to an insurance company," says Jesse Slome, the association's executive director. The products -- called asset-based, combination or linked policies -typically require one lump-sum premium payment, usually of $50,000 or more. They provide long-term care benefits for a certain number of years, a death benefit if you don't use long-term care and a money-back option that returns the premium in case you decide you don't want the policy after all. Scott McQueen Purple and gold! Sounds like the Minnesota Vikings, right? Perhaps so, but it is also how you describe the lovely colors of ametrine. With amertine you can have two rich colors for the price of one…and it’s inexpensive… especially considering the fact that it comes from only one mine in the world – the Anahi Mine in Bolivia. This history of ametrine is romantic and exotic. The original ametrine mine in Bolivia was received by a Spanish conquistador as a dowry upon marrying a princess named Anahi from the Avoreos tribe. He then introduced the gemstone to Europe by giving gifts to his Spanish queen. Ametrine is a very durable gemstone suited to a variety of jewelry uses. Most sizes and shapes are available but the color contrast is most pronounced in sizes of over seven carats. Beware your purchase of ametrine as low priced ametrine may be made from synthetic material. In 1994 a Russian laboratory perfected the industrial production of bicolored quartz crystals that are irradiated to bring out the typical ametrine colors.

A: Today’s over-the-air TV transmissions are entirely digital, a change mandated by the government a couple of years back. The old “analog” TV transmissions were switched off in 2010, something that owners of old tube televisions who try to pick up signals with their old antennae are painfully aware of. However, even with an older television, you can pick up lineof-sight transmissions and receive local television stations. Converter boxes are available at most large retailers that sell electronics and cost from $30 to $60. You can learn more at http://dtv.gov/consumercorner_4.html. If you have a newer HD television, you might be able to pick up a few signals if the TV has a built-in digital antenna. If not, there are several HD antennas on the market. If you live in an area where TV signals are traditionally faint, you’ll absolutely need one of these. They start at around $45 and go up in price, but the plus side is that you won’t pay any more money for TV signals once the antenna is up. At least one brand of HD antenna was designed to be set up inside your home, but there are other brands specifically made to be set up outside or on the roof. Outdoor antennas can pick up signals up to 50 miles away in most cases, as long as there aren’t too many obstructions like hills or other buildings between your home and the transmission source. To set up an outdoor HD antenna, follow the instructions included with the product. Those made for rooftops should include proper mounting bolts and, ideally, small sealing squares (basically roof-patching squares) that sit between the antenna mount base and the roof. If those sealing squares aren’t included, head to your home-improvement store for roof patches and cut them to fit. You’ll also need to feed the coaxial cable connecting the antenna back into the house to your television. If possible, try using the holes already drilled by the cable company to install its coax, rather than punch more holes in your home’s envelope. A number of videos on the web can provide more information on antenna installation. This video (http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=CuY-D9fQG_s) shows one homeowner’s installation option, at the top of the eave. Another (http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=C0WQtzMdo7I) provides details on properly positioning the antenna for an optimal signal, which is important in remote areas. HOME TIP: If you have an existing dish or antenna mount on the roof, take note of how the mount base is set up. It can be a big help in setting up your HD antenna without causing a roof leak. Send your questions or tips to ask@thisisahammer.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

INFORMATION YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT... ARE YOU AT RISK? PROBABLY SO! The most common medical condition in the WORLD, with often devastating and even fatal consequences is Vitamin D deficiency. This disease affects OVER 200 MILLION people in North America alone! You should NOT be one of them! YOU CAN AVOID THIS RISK FOR PENNIES PER DAY!

VITAMIN D

IS ONE HOT TOPIC!!!

Find out if you are at risk by taking our FREE Vitamin D Quiz. go to: http://Dave.TheVitaminDStory.com/ Bankruptcy Basic Information (part 2):

Chapter 7 is a liquidation bankruptcy. This means the case administrator, known as a Trustee, can liquidate any assets the bankruptcy filer has that are not protected and claimed by law, through exemptions. Any money collected is distributed to creditors. Under Colorado law, certain protections are afforded for items such as homestead equity, motor vehicles, household goods, clothing, and retirement accounts. Bankruptcy is intended to afford a fresh start to filers, but is not intended to strip them of necessary items. Many people who file for Chapter 7 do not lose any property. The repayment plan of Chapter 13 allows the filer to keep items that may not be protected in a Chapter 7 liquidation. Instead of having the property liquidated, the value of the non-protected property is paid back through a structured repayment plan. The Chapter 13 Trustee distributes the payments to creditors. FORUM QUESTION: Do I have to include my doctor's bill, car loan, and personal family loan in bankruptcy? ANSWER- Yes. You must list all financial obligations that you owe on the date you file for bankruptcy. Options exist that allow a filer to keep financed items (such as a veCindy Rose hicle) after bankruptcy. ***If you have general questions about bankruptcy, email them to april@nortonlawpc. com . Back to School Mouthguards ??

Q. What is a Mouthguard?

A. A mouthguard is a flexible appliance worn in athletic and recreational activities to protect teeth from injury Q. Why should I wear a mouthguard? A. Why NOT? According to the Academy of General Dentistry, “A mouthguard can prevent serious injuries such as broken teeth, jaw fractures, cerebral hemorrhage and neck injuries by helping to avoid situations where the lower jaw gets jammed into the upper jaw. Mouthguards are effective in moving soft tissue in the oral cavity away from the teeth, preventing laceration and bruising of the lips and cheeks, especially for those who wear orthodontic appliances. They may also reduce the severity and incidence of concussions”. A mouthguard can protect and conserve “what’s in your wallet” too. Q. Are “Back to School Mouthguards” important? Really important? A. Yes! Kids will be heading back to school very soon, and many will end up in various contact sports. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation (NYSSF), every year there are 15 million dental injuries and 5 million teeth are lost to injuries. According to the American Dental Association, mouthguards help prevent over 200,000 high-school and Cindy Rose college athletes from getting these injuries. Statistics from the NYSSF indicate that losing a single tooth can cost $10,000 to $20,000 over one’s lifetime to replace and restore that tooth!

Powerful and playful. Grand L40 Series • RTV900 Kubota compact tractors and utility vehicles make raising horses even more rewarding. The all-new Grand L40 Series, with its innovative HST Plus transmission, makes the toughest chores seem simple. The RTV900 has a powerful 21.6 HP diesel engine and 3-range variable hydrostatic transmission (VHT) to handle everything else.

Q. Why don’t more students wear a mouthguard? A. Students may decide not to wear a mouthguard for a number of reasons: Not all schools require wearing a mouthguard while participating in contact sports. Some that don’t fit properly, or are too big, can impair breathing (or feel like it). Cost may be a factor. Some kids just may “forget” to put their mouthguard in. Athletes that wear properly fitted mouthguards typically find them to be comfortable, resistant to tearing, and durable. One study showed that a custom-made “double layered” mouthguard “offers double defenses; the extra layers did not reduce comfort or wearability. These double layered materials are what the pros wear. Even the least expensive mouthguard is better than none. It’s true that some protect better than others, but most types help prevent injuries to the teeth, lips, cheek, and tongue.

Q. Does a mouthguard do more than just protect the teeth? A. YES! Academy of General Dentistry spokesperson, Dr. Luke Maranga believes they do. Dr. Matranga states: “They (mouthguards) also minimize injury and decrease the severity of the injury from hits or falls that could otherwise result in a fractured jaw.”

Wow! It’s true: A properly fitting mouthguard can absorb enough of a blow to prevent a fractured jaw – and the other injuries noted above. Remember: KEEP YOUR TEETH AND GUMS HEALTHY FOR A LIFETIME

equal. But if a divorce occurs, the woman’s situation tends to be somewhat more challenging than that of her ex-spouse. And that’s why, during this major life transition, you may want to meet with a professional financial advisor to go over your spending needs and your cash flow, so that you know what you absolutely need today — and how you can plan for tomorrow.

Cindy Rose

Before we get into some possible steps you can take, let’s look at some of the reasons that women may fare worse than men, financially speaking, following a divorce:

Lower income — The average woman’s family income drops by 37% after divorce, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In many cases, divorce exacerbates a situation in which women were already trailing men in earnings. In fact, women still only earn 77 cents for each dollar earned by men, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Smaller retirement accounts — The average balance on women’s defined contribution plans (such as 401(k) plans) is only 60% of men’s average balances, according to LIMRA, a financial services research organization. Of course, “averages” are just that — averages. But whether you recognize yourself in the above numbers or not, consider these suggestions: Create an emergency fund. Try to put six months’ to a year’s worth of living expenses in a liquid account. Once you’ve established this emergency fund, you won’t have to dip into long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as an expensive car repair, a new furnace or a large medical bill. Contribute as much as you can afford to your retirement accounts. Even if you will eventually receive some of your ex-spouse’s retirement funds, you need to take full advantage of your own savings opportunities — because it’s pretty hard to save “too much” for retirement. If money is tight, it won’t always be easy, but contribute as much as you can to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. At a minimum, put in enough to earn the employer’s match, if one is offered. Rebalance your investment portfolio. If you are now investing for yourself, you’ll want to take a close look at your asset mix to make sure it is appropriate for your situation. For example, your risk tolerance may be quite different than that of your ex-spouse’s. So if you now have total control over an investment portfolio, you need to make sure it reflects your needs and preferences. Consequently, you may need to “rebalance” your holdings. Above all, get some help. As mentioned above, now is a good time to meet with a financial advisor. And if you don’t have much experience in managing your finances, you may even find it helpful to work with a trust company, which can collaborate with your financial provider to manage your assets and also provide a variety of other functions, including bill payment and record keeping. A trust company’s services can prove especially valuable to you and your family should you ever become incapacitated. Unfortunately, a divorce may leave you feeling “at sea” in many areas of your life. But by following the above suggestions, you can at least help keep your financial ship in calmer waters.

Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt is not your typical yogurt store. Sure we offer 16 flavors and unlimited toppings, but that is only the beginning of the experience we offer. Orange Leaf in Parker is the very first Orange Leaf in Colorado and is a privately owned franchise.

7165 North Delbert Road • Parker, CO 80138 • 720-851-2300

One way we are different is our yogurt has a light, smoother, refreshing taste than you may have experienced elsewhere. Just when you thought you have tried every kind of yogurt, think again. In my opinion, Orange Leaf's yogurt has more of a creamy ice cream flavor, yet it is a healthier choice and you don't have that heavy feeling after you indulge in a bowl. Your taste buds and your mind think you are treating yourself, but in reality it is a healthy non-fat, or low-fat snack. You will notice the second way we are different as soon as you walk in. Our store is much larger than many yogurt stores. The colors are bright and inviting, you just feel good when you walk in the store. The reason for this is, we want Orange Leaf to be a place where families and friends can gather and visit. We have several leather sofas where you can kick back and just relax and build relationships while having a delicious desert that you created. My husband and I have a passion for teens, we have been leaders in a group at our church for the past 5 years that helps to point teens at risk to Christ. Teens need a place where they can go and meet up with friends in a safe environment and our store is that kind of place. Teens and kids of all ages, from 2 to 102 love to come in and visit with family and friends over a tasty treat.

Looking for a New Beginning?

Are you on a Spiritual Path?

Three, our goal is to be a huge asset to the community. We are currently working with several schools and athletic teams to provide a night of fun and yogurt. We feel this is a WIN-WIN for everyone. Teams, kids and parents get a night out to visit and build relationships, the group raises some money for their cause and Orange Leaf gets to do what they do best....provide great tasting yogurt! Our store is open daily now from 11:00am - 11:00pm Friday and Saturday and 11:00am - 10:00pm Sunday - Thursday, we are celebrating our Grand Opening starting August 2nd at 5:30. We start with the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony provided by the Parker Chamber of Commerce and an hour of free yogurt. The fun continues on Aug 3-4 with more free yogurt from 11:00am - 12:00pm each day and many prizes and contests. 10% of proceeds for each day will be given to many several local groups such as the Legends Cheer squad, Parker Task Force, Boy Scout Troop #16 and many others. We provide free samples every day, so come out and taste it for yourself to decide if Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt isn't the best yogurt you have every tasted. We are located at 11290 S Twenty Mile Road, Suite 121 in Parker. We are right next door to Panera and across the parking lot from Firehouse Subs and Fitness 19 in the Parker Valley Center.
