No, it’s not anything to do with take-out Chinese in those little white boxes. This week, Tidbits features a variety of items that start with to- and go-. • Tobacco contributes to more than 400,000 deaths in the United States every year. That’s almost 20 percent of all U.S. deaths! About 23 percent of adult Americans smoke, and 30 percent of adolescents. A person who hasn’t used tobacco by the time he is 21 is quite likely to remain a non-smoker. Around the globe, about 10 million cigarettes are purchased each minute of every day. • Halfway between Boston and New Bedford, Massachusetts, stood an old house, built in 1709 as a tollcollecting station, stable and inn for weary travelers. In 1930, along came Ken and Ruth Wakefield, who purchased the house and opened a lodge, naming it the Toll House Inn. Ruth provided many delicious meals for her guests, as well as tempting baked goods. While mixing up a batch of her favorite cookie recipe, as an experiment, she added a chopped chocolate bar. It was so wellliked, she continued the practice, and the treat became quite popular throughout the area. So popular, it soon became known as the Toll House cookie, a name that endures today. turn the page for more!

Before a boy reached legal age, he wore a white toga with a border of a wide purple stripe. At his “coming of age” ceremony, usually around age 14 or 15, he donned, for the first time, a plain white toga. This was known as the toga virilis. • At age 33, J.R.R. Tolkien became a professor in the English Department at the University of Oxford. Always interested in languages, he actually invented several “artificial” languages, two of which, “Quenya” and “Sindarin,” he used in his novels. While serving with the British army during World War I, he was hospitalized with trench fever. During his confinement, he began writing fantasy tales. Years later, he published a novel he had written for his children, entitled “The Hobbit.” His publishers convinced him to write a sequel, and the result was the three-volume work, “The Lord of the Rings,” an effort that required nearly 10 years. It was published in 1954 and 1955. Tolkien continued as professor at Oxford until 1959.

• Toponymy is the study of place names. When something takes its name from a certain place, it’s known as a toponym. Well-known examples include the Oxford shirt taking its name from Oxford, England, and hamburgers being named for their city of origin, Hamburg, Germany. The province of Ontario gets its name from Lake Ontario, not the other way around. Did you know that the tuxedo takes its name from Tuxedo Park, New York? Heartworm disease in dogs and cats is on the rise in Colorado. Infected dogs carry the disease (the reservoir) and the mosquitoes spread it (the vector) through their bite in search of a blood meal. The Colorado mosquito has become a major health threat in the state. Heartworm disease in dogs is preventable and if your dog gets infected with the disease it is treatable. Blood testing first before putting your dog on the preventative medication is mandatory. If your dog comes down with the disease there is an effective treatment that has saved many dog’s lives. In Colorado the coyote and fox are the primary host/reservoirs that serve to infect other species: cats, raccoons, bears, etc. and in rare instances – humans. Heartworm disease in the cat is a completely different story. There is no definitive treatment for cats if they get the disease. 50% of infected cats will die within two years. There is new research that may improve the odds of your cat surviving feline heartworm disease. Currently there is no effective treatment to rid the worms from your cat. Sudden death without any warning or variable signs of chronic cough, trouble breathing, weight loss, lethargy, and vomiting are seen with feline heartworm disease. These clinical signs mimic many common diseases seen in the cat, especially asthma. The best and safest way to protect your cat(s) is by using preventive medication. First, get your cat tested to make sure your cat is not infected with heartworms. Start heartworm medication in Colorado by April first and ending November first. Preventative medication is easy to use – chewable tablets for dogs or apply liquid to the skin for cats once every 30 days. “An ounce of prevention” is best because there is no treatment/cure if your cat gets infected. If you have mosquitoes around your house your cats and dogs are at risk. Call Cat Specialist if you have questions about heartworm disease affecting cats – 303-663-2287. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Q: I was sad when Thad Luckinbill left “The Young and The Restless” last year, so you can imagine how happy I was to see him on the CW’s “Nikita.” Will his character be back for Season Two? -- Charlene, via e-mail A: Thad, who you also can see this month in Hallmark Channel’s “Keeping Up With the Randalls,” gave me the scoop: “I think that’s yet to be determined. They were honest about it and told me that they weren’t sure exactly what to do with it, so that is why they left it open. It’s like anything, I think if the story’s right and it matches up to bring him back, then that would be great. I would love it. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. “I think it would be a good twist if they decided to bring him back. It was really a fun group to work with and a really cool show. I love how stylized that show is. I think that was what I was most impressed with. Not just the way they shoot, but the way it looks. It’s just a really pretty show.” ***

Q: I recently found out that Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz were dating, and now I hear they’ve married! Is that true? -- Hannah D., Detroit A: That sound you just heard was the collective sigh of millions of women worldwide who wouldn’t have minded becoming Mrs. James Bond themselves one day. It is true: Daniel and Rachel married in a super-secret ceremony (befitting a superspy and his lady love) in New York on June 22. A source close to the couple told “News of the World”: “They are madly in love, and couldn’t wait to be husband and wife -- but they wanted minimum fuss. They had a couple of friends as witnesses and their children from previous relationships, and that was it.” ***

Q: I can’t wait for Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” to hit the theaters, especially after seeing some firstlook pictures in “Entertainment Weekly.” Can you tell me which actors from “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy will be back for “The Hobbit”? -- Patrick L., Akron, Ohio A: So far, Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian McKellan, Christopher Lee, Andy Serkis, Ian Holm and Hugo Weaving are set to return to Middle Earth. Liv Tyler, who played Arwen in the trilogy, is keen to make a cameo in the latest films, however, as of this writing, there are no plans to resurrect her character. Who wouldn’t want a gemstone whose various color nuances have such melodious names such as Santa Maria (from the Itabira mine in Brazil), Santa Maria Africana (from mines in Mozambique), Espirito Santo (from the state in Brazil with the same name), and Martha Rocha named after the Brazilian beauty queen of 1954? Who wouldn’t want a gemstone that is said to arouse feelings of friendship, harmony, and trust? Who wouldn’t want a gemstone that, according to traditions, promises marital happiness to the woman who wears it? And who wouldn’t want a gemstone that captures the lucid blue of the oceans and stirs visions of mermaids, treasure chests, and ancient sailing vessels? Who wouldn’t want a gemstone named literally water-sea – from the Latin aqua = water and mare = sea? But aquamarine is much more than a name. It is one of our most popular and best-known gemstones – almost as popular as the ageless ruby, emerald, and sapphire. An outstanding feature of the aquamarine is that it is almost entirely free of inclusions, those solid, liquid, or gaseous foreign bodies enclosed in a mineral or rock. It also has a good hardness that makes it durable and protects it from scratches. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. OVERCOMING THE ODDS: RICK HANSEN British Columbian Rick Hansen had a dream — to represent Canada at the Olympic Games. But his life took a turn that he ever could have imagined. Read on to see how Hansen triumphed over adversity by following his motto: “If you believe in a dream and have the courage to try, great things can be accomplished. Anything is possible.” • As a high school student, Hansen was a natural athlete and had excelled in five sports, winning allstar awards in each one. In his free time, he was an avid fisherman. One simple decision after a fishing trip changed his life. He and his best friend hitchhiked home, taking a ride in the back of a pickup truck. On a winding road, the driver swerved, skidded and went off the road, and the two teens were thrown out of the truck. The friend walked away from the crash, while Hansen received a spinal cord injury, and at age 15, was paralyzed from the waist down.

• Nguba is the African word for “peanut.” So THAT’S where we get our word “goober”!

• Hansen spent seven months in rehabilitation in Vancouver, B.C., and after high school graduation, enrolled at the University of British Columbia. There he became the first disabled student to receive a degree in physical education. It was at the university that Hansen met another disabled athlete, Terry Fox, who had lost a leg to bone cancer. Fox had an ambitious plan to run across Canada from Newfoundland to British Columbia to raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately, Fox’s cancer returned, and he was forced to halt his mission. But Hansen was so inspired by Fox’s courage, he made plans to circle the world in his wheelchair to raise money and awareness for spinal cord injuries. • Hansen’s impressive journey, dubbed the “Man in Motion World Tour,” began in March of 1985 in Vancouver. His trek covered 34 countries on four continents, a distance of more than 24,850 miles (40,000 km). It was 26 months before he pulled back into Vancouver, having raised $26 million for his cause. • Yet the Man in Motion tour is only one of his incredible achievements. Hansen has been the victor in 19 international wheelchair marathons. He is a wheelchair volleyball and basketball national champ and winner of six Paralympic medals. At the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Hansen was selected as the torchbearer to bring the flame into the stadium. • Hansen continues his work as an advocate for those with spinal cord injuries. He serves as president and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, which has raised upwards of $200 million for this important cause. He has co-authored two books, one about his Man in Motion adventure, and another entitled “Going the Distance: 7 Steps to Personal Change.” • As an in-demand motivational speaker, Hansen particularly enjoys making a difference in the lives of young people. Along this line, he has served as a high school basketball and volleyball coach. Throughout his adversity, he has maintained that “a shattered spine is not a shattered spirit,” and in his words, “Courage is being able to recognize and overcome fear or act in the face of danger, and to do so with dignity and integrity.”

What is in a standard homeowners insurance policy? A standard homeowners insurance policy includes four essential types of coverage. They include: Structure- This part of your policy pays to repair or rebuild your home if it is damaged or destroyed by fire, hurricane, hail, lightning or other disaster listed in your policy. It will not pay for damage caused by a flood, earthquake or routine wear and tear. Most policies include a small amount for detached structures on the property such as sheds and barns. Personal Belongings- Your furniture, clothes, sports equipment and other personal items are covered if they are stolen or destroyed by one of the covered perils. Most policies do a percentage of the dwelling amount for personal property. Generally, it’s in the 60-70% range of your dwelling amount. Expensive and unique items such as jewelry and furs are covered but are generally limited to about $2,500. For any unique items/collections that you have, it’s best to contact your agent and ask if there’s a limit. If there is, you might need to schedule it onto the policy. That insures it for full value and eliminates any deductible for that item. Liability- This is your lawsuit protection. Most policies come standard with $100,000 but it’s usually worth it to increase it to at least $300,000. Doing so will normally only add about $2 a month to your policy and triples your coverage.

¥ You probably know that the Chinese script is made up of ideograms: pictures that represent objects or ideas. Often, words are formed by pairing simple symbols to convey a more complex idea. For instance, the symbol for “eye” combined with the symbol for “water” creates the word “teardrop.” Pair “mouth” with “bird” and you get song. And, interestingly, pairing two women together makes the symbol for “quarrel,” and three means “gossip.”

¥ You may be surprised to learn that President Abraham Lincoln’s son, Robert Todd Lincoln, was on the scene of three presidential assassinations. The first time was in 1865, when he was with his father after he was shot at Ford’s Theatre. Finally, in 1901, he was at the PanAmerican Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y., when President William McKinley was assassinated. ¥ If you’re like the average American man, over the course of 10 years you’ll shave off a full pound of whiskers.

Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Work Toward Your Own Financial Independence Day On July 4, we shoot fireworks, attend picnics, watch parades and otherwise celebrate our nation’s independence and the many freedoms we enjoy. But as you go through life, you’ll find out how important Cindy Rose it is to work towards another type of freedom — financial freedom. That’s why you need to put strategies in place to help you work towards your own Financial Independence Day. And there’s no way to “sugar-coat” this task, because it will be challenging. In recent years, a combination of factors — including depressed housing prices, rising health care costs, frozen or eliminated pension plans and the financial market plunge of 2008 and early 2009 — has made it more difficult for many of us to accumulate the resources we’ll need to enjoy the retirement lifestyle we’ve envisioned. In fact, the average American family faces a 37 percent shortfall in the income they will need in retirement, according to a recent report by consulting firm McKinsey & Company. But now that we’ve gotten the “bad” stuff out of the way, let’s turn to the good news: You can do a great deal to work towards financial freedom during your retirement years. Here are some suggestions that can help: Save and invest more. Obviously, the younger you are, the greater the benefit you’ll get by increasing your savings and investments. But whatever your age, you’ll find that it pays to save and invest more. During difficult economic times, of course, it’s not always easy to boost your savings and investments, but try to find ways that are as “automatic” as possible. For example, whenever you get a raise, increase your 401(k) contributions, which come directly from your paycheck. And whenever you get a “windfall,” such as a tax refund, try to use part of it for your IRA or another investment account. Rebalance your portfolio. It’s always a good idea to periodically rebalance your investments to make sure they are still aligned with your goals and risk tolerance. But it’s especially important to rebalance as you get older and you near retirement. At this stage, you’ll want to decrease the volatility in your portfolio and lock in what gains you’ve achieved, so you may want to move some (but certainly not all) of your more aggressive investments into less volatile ones. Cut down on debts. It’s easier said than done, but anything you can do to reduce your debt load will free up money to invest for your retirement. Work diligently to pay off whatever debts you can and examine your lifestyle to find areas in which you can reduce spending. Consider working part-time during retirement. Many Americans are now living longer and enjoying happy, healthy retirements. In fact, the concept of “retirement” has changed so that it now includes any number of activities — including part-time work in a completely different area from one’s previous career. If you are willing to do even a little part-time work during your retirement years, you can greatly reduce the financial pressures you may face during this time of your life. The 4th of July comes and goes quickly. So put strategies in place now to help you work towards your own Financial Independence Day.

So what is it about Jesus that separates Him and Christianity from every other religion? Well, there are some major differences and to get fully into each and every one would be more than this column would allow, but let me touch on what I feel is the most significant issue. As we have established, man is separated from God the Father because of sin. And even though God loves us, because He is a holy and righteous God, He cannot come into the presence of sin in any shape or form. And sin to define it is simple terms, is a violation of light, a violation of truth. But God had a plan to redeem His people, to buy you and I back so that our relationship and our standing with Him could be restored once and for all and that is where Jesus comes in. Jesus led a sinless life, and when he was crucified, the Bible tells us He took the sins of the entire world upon Him. Since he died in our place, having never sinned, his shed innocent blood now covers or makes an atonement for every sin you and I have ever done or will ever do. And when a person makes Jesus the Lord and Saviour of their life, now when God the Father looks upon you, He does not see the sinful, evil, wicked you, but He sees the blood of His only Son and because of that finished work, you and I are declared holy and righteous, we are declared worthy of His presence. Because Jesus died and was resurrected, this alone separates Him and Christianity from every other religion the world has to offer, yes EVERY ONE! The Bible declares the truth of this matter in 1 Timothy 2:5 (New Living Translation) For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity— the man Christ Jesus. No other person from any other religion has died for you, has been resurrected back to life for you, Jesus is THE only one. All other forms of religion in some way, shape or form, try and use works as a way back to God. But the truth is and always will be that no amount of good works can ever place you back into right standing with God, it is simply grace through faith; faith in God’s only begotten son who died for you. And if you have never experienced this, you can right now by simply repeating this simple prayer. “Jesus come into my life. Forgive me of all my sins. I ask You to cleanse my heart, and make me a new person in You right now. I believe that You are the Son of God and that You died on the cross for me. Jesus, I want to thank You for loving me enough to die for me. I accept all that your shed blood bought for me on the cross, and I receive you as my Savior and Lord. In Your name I pray. Amen.”
