ICE CREAM INFO by Kathy Wolfe

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Since July is National Ice Cream Month, it’s a good time for Tidbits to bring you the “scoop” about this confection and those who peddle it. • We’ve been celebrating National Ice Cream Month since 1984, when President Ronald Reagan proclaimed it as such in Senate Joint Resolution 298, calling upon “the people of the United States to observe these events with appropriate ceremonies and activities.” Reagan’s basis for the proclamation was that “ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over 90% of the people,” and is “the perfect dessert and snack food.” • It’s estimated that 98% of American households buy ice cream, over 1.5 billion gallons a year, totaling upwards of $10 billion. About 9% of all the milk produced by dairy farmers in the U.S. goes to the making of ice cream. • The origins of ice cream appear to date back to the second century B.C. Alexander the Great is documented as a being a fan of snow and ice flavored with honey and nectar. Emperor Nero Claudius Caesar dispatched runners into the mountains to obtain snow to be infused with fruits and juices. turn the page for more!

Tidbits® of Douglas & Elbert Counties ICE CREAM INFO (continued):

• In the 13th century when explorer Marco Polo returned

to his native Italy from his travels in the Far East, he brought home a recipe very similar to our sherbet of today. “Cream Ice” was on the table of England’s King Charles I during the early 1600s. A Parisian café first offered ice cream to the public around 1600.

• Ice cream’s first official mention in North America was in a letter from a guest of the governor of Maryland. The New York Gazette featured a confectioner’s advertisement for ice cream in 1777 informing readers that the treat was available “almost every day.” President George Washington was a great lover of ice cream, with records indicating that the chief executive spent $200 on ice cream during the summer of 1790. His personal effects at the time of his death included two pewter ice cream pots. James Madison was another president who was fond of the treat, having it served at his Inaugural Ball in 1813. • America’s first patent for an ice cream cone was issued in 1903 to Italo Marchiony, an Italian immigrant who invented his cone in New York City. The following year the St. Louis World’s Fair featured a vendor selling crisp waffle pastries, who just happened to have his booth next to an ice cream merchant. When the ice cream booth ran out of dishes, the pasty vendor stepped in, rolling his waffles into cone shapes. The rest, as they say, is history. Today’s machines are capable of producing about 150,000 cones every day. • There are a lot of items that are called ice cream, so what’s the difference? Under federal law, ice cream must contain at least 10% milkfat and weigh a minimum of 4.5 lbs. per gallon. “French” ice cream contains that 10% as well as at least 1.4% egg yolk solids. • The world’s first Dairy Queen opened in Joliet, Illinois in 1940, and within 15 years there were 2,600 locations. Estevan, Saskatchewan became home to the first Canadian store in 1953. Canada is also the site of the world’s business Dairy Queen, in Moncton, New Brunswick. Dairy Queen’s success is the result of developing the first formula for soft-serve ice cream, accomplished by John Fremont McCullough in 1938. • Friends since junior high school on Long Island, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield have an enduring friendship. It was Jerry’s ambition to enter med school, but he couldn’t seem to get accepted into any. Ben was admitted to several colleges, but dropped out of all of them. The pair plunked down $5 to purchase a correspondence course on ice cream making from Penn State University. Between the two of them, they had $8,000 in savings, and with the addition of a $4,000 bank loan, they set out on a new business venture. They leased a vacant gas station in Burlington, Vermont, and opened their ice cream parlor in 1978. An old spool and bobbin mill was their next location, where they first began packing their ice cream in pints. Franchises began in 1981, and can now be found in 26 countries around the world. They achieved recognition in 1983 when Ben and Jerry’s ice cream was used to put together the world’s largest ice cream sundae, one weighing 27,102 lbs. (12,293 kg).

A virus’s job is to make as many copies of itself as quickly as possible. Viruses enter the body and make large numbers of viral copies using the cat’s cells as a virus factory. Ultimately the infected cells burst, shedding large numbers of viral copies that infect other normal cells and then the process is repeated over and over again. Viral infections can spread throughout an animal’s body at a very rapid pace causing sickness or death.

A cat with a healthy immune system or who has been vaccinated against a specific virus, can stop the invasion and remain virus free. Poor immunity will cause the cat to become ill and many individuals die.

What is a virus and how does it cause disease? A virus is not a true living disease organism like a bacterium or fungus. It is a complex collection of genetic molecules, either DNA or RNA, encased in a protein coating. A virus is made up of chemical sequences that reproduce themselves rapidly in an animal or plant and it can cause disease. Medical researchers ascribe the words – “a smart virus”, “ability to adapt”, “a killer bug” giving the virus almost human characteristics, whereas the biochemist will ascribe chemical reactions and base pairings as a laboratory experiment devoid of all living character. They are both right.

The Deadly Seven: ·

·

· · · · ·

(FPV) Feline Panleukopenia virus (feline distemper) is a highly contagious virus that can quickly kill cats that do not have a healthy stimulated immune system. (FHV) Feline Herpes virus is a highly contagious virus that causes severe upper respiratory distress – sneezing, troubled breathing and decreased appetite. (FCV) Feline Calici virus is a highly contagious virus that infects the nose, eyes and causes ulcers in the mouth. (RV) Rabies virus is that attacks the central nervous system and is inevitably fatal. (FeLV) Feline Leukemia virus directly or indirectly causes multiple diseases that are ultimately fatal. (FIV) Feline Immunodeficiency virus that weakens the immune system and eventually the cat is overcome by multiple diseases. (FIP) Feline Infectious Peritonitis virus causes the cat’s immune system to spread a fatal disease throughout the body.

Scott McQueen The magic of black is seen in jewelry made from onyx, a black chalcedony quartz with a delicate texture that is often carved into cameos. Though still popular with jewelry designers, onyx was especially popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans. There’s an old legend about Cupid finding Venus asleep and taking the opportunity to cut her fingernails with an arrowhead. He left the clippings scattered on the sand and the fates turned them into stone so that no part of the heavenly body would ever perish. The stone, as the story goes, was onyx, which brings up an interesting question, “Did Venus wear Vamp?” There may be an explanation. Back in Greek times nearly all colors of chalcedony from fingernail white to dark black were called onyx. Later the Romans narrowed the term to refer to black and dark brown colors only. Black onyx is used often as a background for color play. Its fine texture makes it ideal for carving and therefore a favored material for today's lapidaries. Onyx was often used as the perfect foil for carved rock crystal or the 'drop dead red' of rubies in art deco designs. It is also popular in marcasite jewelry. Use onyx to add a little black magic to your jewelry design.

Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. 2 store locations: 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker and 190 S Wilcox in Castle Rock. For more call 303.841.2666 or 303-660-2696

Q: I just started doing some repainting around the house, and I am finding that my first efforts don’t look great. The paint seems thick in some spots; old paint is still faintly visible in others, and I can see brush marks everywhere. I’m going to need to start over, I guess. Any advice on how to improve my painting skills? -- Susan in Kansas City, Mo. A: First, I’m glad you stopped with the first room as soon as you saw the problems. That way you can fix the mistakes there and learn enough to not repeat them in other rooms, which saves time and money. Experience will help improve many of these common painting problems. But there are some basic steps to take that will minimize the issues. --Paint showing through the new coat: Put a coat of primer between the old paint and the new when the old paint is a darker color or if it is a different type of paint (oil-based vs. latex-based, for example). --”Thick”-looking spots: These can be caused by painting a second coat before the first one is dry, or by painting over fresh spackling that isn’t completely dry. Thick spots on the old coat of paint also will show through the new one; try to sand those down beforehand. --Brush marks: Always stir the paint when you open the can, even if the paint store pre-stirred it for you. Then, make sure not to overload your brush with paint: dip only about one-third of the brush. Finally, make your brush strokes smooth and long, and lift the brush away so the paint feathers out. --Uneven roller strokes: Apply paint to the roller evenly by using a paint tray or screen. Dip one side of the roller into the paint reservoir and then roll it back and forth on the tray or screen so it spreads evenly. Also, don’t let the roller “slide” across the wall surface; it should roll freely. If it doesn’t, disassemble and clean it. --Paint drips: Again, don’t overload your brush or roller. If paint drips down the wall, finish the brush stroke and then brush the drip in the same direction that you’re painting the rest of the wall, feathering it out. If paint drips on the floor or baseboards, wipe it up immediately with a damp cloth. --Paint splatters: This happens often when using rollers, so always start your roll by angling upward, and roll smoothly and evenly. Don’t hurry. HOME TIP: To prevent variation between cans of a custom-mixed color, consolidate or “box” all the custom color into a single large container, mix, and then refill the smaller cans with the mixed paint. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer. com. My new e-book, “101 Best Home Tips,” is available to download on Amazon Kindle! Pick it up it today for just 99 cents.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Aug. 3, 1492, from the Spanish port of Palos, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sets sail in command of three ships -- the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria -- on a journey to find a western sea route to China, India and Asia. In October, Columbus sighted Cuba, which he thought was mainland China. • On July 29, 1909, the newly formed General Motors Corporation acquires the country’s leading luxury automaker, the Cadillac Automobile Company, for $4.5 million. Cadillac was founded out of the ruins of automotive pioneer Henry Ford’s second failed company. His third effort, the Ford Motor Company, finally succeeded. • On Aug. 4, 1914, as World War I erupts in Europe, President Woodrow Wilson formally proclaims the neutrality of the United States. However, by June 1915, the first 14,000 U.S. infantry troops landed in France to begin training for combat. • On Aug. 2, 1934, Chancellor Adolf Hitler becomes absolute dictator of Germany under the title of Fuhrer, or “Leader.” The Fuhrer assured his people that the Third Reich would last for a thousand years, but Nazi Germany collapsed just 11 years later. • On Aug. 1, 1943, a Japanese destroyer rams an American PT (patrol torpedo) boat, No. 109, slicing it in two. The destruction is so massive that other American PT boats in the area assume the crew is dead. Two crewmen were, in fact, killed, but 11 survived, including Lt. John F. Kennedy, who would later become president. • On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signs Medicare, a health insurance program for elderly Americans, into law. At the bill-signing ceremony, former President Harry Truman was enrolled as Medicare’s first beneficiary and received the first Medicare card. • On July 31, 1975, Teamsters Union president Jimmy Hoffa is reported missing in Detroit. He was last seen alive in a parking lot outside the Machus Red Fox restaurant the previous afternoon. Authorities have never been able to confirm what really happened to Hoffa. He was declared legally dead in 1982. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

The detective got up, opened a file drawer, and pulled out a folder. Sitting back down, he opened it, pulled out a photo, and said, "To be a detective, you have to be able to detect. You must be able to notice things such as distinguishing features and oddities like scars and so forth."

The blonde immediately said, "Yes, I did, he has only one eye!" The detective shook his head and said, "Of course he has only one eye in this picture! It's a profile of his face! You're dismissed!" The first blonde hung her head and walked out of the office.

The detective then turned to the second blonde, stuck the photo in her face for two seconds, pulled it back, and said, "What about you? Notice anything unusual or outstanding about this man?" "Yes! He only has one ear!" The detective put his head in his hands and exclaimed, "Didn't you hear what I just told the other lady? This is a profile of the man's face! Of course you can only see one ear! You're excused too!"

The second blonde sheepishly walked out of the office. The detective turned his attention to the third and last blonde and said, "This is probably a waste of time, but...." He flashed the photo in her face for a couple of seconds and withdrew it, saying, "All right, did you notice anything distinguishing or unusual about this man?" The blonde said, "I sure did. This man wears contact lenses." The detective frowned, took another look at the picture, and began looking at some of the papers in the folder. He looked up at the blonde with a puzzled expression and said, "You're absolutely right! His bio says he wears contacts! How in the world could you tell that by looking at his picture?" The blonde rolled her eyes and said, "Well, Hellooooooooooooo! With only one eye and one ear, he can't wear glasses."
