• All melons belong to the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae, which is the family that includes cucumbers, squash and pumpkins. Because they grow on long, trailing vines, melons require lots of garden space. Generally, given adequate room, melons are easy and fun to grow.

• Along with the long vines are leaves that provide shade during the day, protecting the developing fruit from the hot sun. Melons need hot sun and a long growing season to grow to maturity. Also, melon blossoms need bees for pollination. • Melons are divided into two groups with watermelons in a class by themselves. The other group is muskmelons. Watermelon seeds are spread throughout the middle of the melons (even “seedless” have some); muskmelon seeds are concentrated in a middle cavity surrounded by sweet pulp. • If cantaloupe is your favorite, and you are wondering where they fit, they are muskmelons. North America (N.A.) cantaloupes are not true cantaloupes! turn the page for more!

ENJOY SOME MELONS! (continued): • True “cantaloupes” originated in Cantalupo, Italy. They are hard-shelled melons, with wart-like growths on their hard green skin. True cantaloupes are not grown much outside of Mediterranean countries. • N.A. cantaloupes are actually muskmelons. While all cantaloupes are muskmelons, not all muskmelons are cantaloupes! Some other muskmelons are: Honeydew, Casaba, Crenshaw and Persian types like Bender, Montreal and Banana. While you may not be familiar with all of these, many of the less traditional types of melons are now being cultivated in North America. Be adventurous and try some new melons found at your grocery store or farmer’s markets. • The leading states for producing N.A. cantaloupes are California, Arizona, Texas, Georgia and Indiana. The world leader today for watermelon production is China. The United States is number four. • The leading states for producing honeydew melons are California, Arizona and Texas. The honeydew is one of the few melons that will continue to ripen after picking. Another name sometimes used for honeydew melons is “temptation melons.” • This is probably not surprising news, but more than two-thirds of all melons grown in the United States are grown in California. Florida and Georgia are the top states for watermelon production. Many of our melons are imported, usually from Mexico and Chile. The United States imports more melons than any other country. • Most historians believe that watermelons originated in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. Melons seeds in ancient tombs indicate that melons were in Egypt about 4,000 years ago. • Some botanists believe that watermelons are not actually melons but should be considered cucumbers. One of the reasons they say this is because muskmelons easily cross-pollinate with one another forming new hybrids, but watermelons will not cross-pollinate with other melons. • Watermelons are 92 percent water, hence the very appropriate name, and the reason it is advisable to buy heavy melons. They contain approximately 6 percent sugar and are rich sources of vitamins A and C. Even though most people only eat the red (or yellow, or other special colors) part of the watermelon, every part is edible. • Watermelon is used more like a vegetable in Asian countries. In Chinese cuisine, watermelon rind is often stir-fried, stewed and pickled. The seeds are often baked for a snack. The Chinese eat Continued on page 7

Deworming and Control of External Parasites: Internal and external parasites weaken newborns to the point that many died in the first months of life. Older cats became chronically debilitated and died sooner if parasites were not treated. Routine deworming and external parasite control has become commonplace and parasite diseases are much less common.

1. Vaccinations 2. Treating with Anti-parasitics (deworming/topical flea/ tick control) 3. Keeping Cats Indoors (and Safe!) 4. And finally, Nutrition Vaccinations: Before universal vaccination (starting around 1970) for feline panleukopenia (distemper, cat flu, etc.), 20-40% of the cat population died from this disease every year. Today with a large percentage of companion cats vaccinated this disease is rarely seen except in unvaccinated outdoor and feral cats. Vaccination was and is the major breakthrough in extending the lifespan of domestic cats.

In the last 40 years cats life expectancy has almost doubled and the life expectancy of dogs has remained about the same. What are the most significant factors in this interesting fact? Most people would say that better nutrition is the primary reason for the extended life span but that is not true. The top four reasons for doubling the lifespan in domestic cats are: (spay/neuter and improved medical care are also relevant).

Indoor Cats: Indoor cats are not subjected to cars and trucks, lawn poisons (insecticides and herbicides), catfights (the spread of infectious disease), getting lost and all the things in an outdoor environment can put your cat in peril. Indoor cats live longer! Finally, Nutrition: Cats are obligate carnivores (they need to eat meat as the major source of nutrition). Feeding cats is now a ‘hot topic’ because it appears that the food manufacturers have marketing campaigns designed to make cats omnivores (animals that can eat meats, grains or both). Most feline diets are designed for the convenience of cat owners and they don’t always meet the nutritional needs of cats. There is about to be a dramatic change in thinking about feline diets. Cat Specialist is starting a project to evaluate current commercial diets to find out which ones are best. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. Top Five Reasons to Buy Long Term Care Insurance
When you think of it, the odds of needing nursing home care are a lot higher than losing your house to fire or totaling your car. Yet, we don't think of being without car insurance or homeowners insurance. Why the hang-up over long term care insurance? Well that's not too hard to figure: Who likes to think about old age or nursing homes? Who likes buying insurance? Besides, when people do think about it, they assume that Medicare covers nursing homes or the state will pick up the tab. Wrong on both counts! On top of all this, you're feeling sandwiched: You?re busy putting money aside for your kid's college bills and your retirement while paying a mortgage, car loan, and just plain having a life. So what should you do? What should your parents be doing when it comes to long term care insurance? Do you wish to take care of your parents if they become unable to take care of themselves? There are five major reasons why people buy long term care insurance: To maintain their independence so they won't have to rely on family members. To protect their assets against the high costs of long term care; to preserve their children's inheritance. To make long term care services affordable, such as home health care and custodial care. To provide themselves with more options than just nursing home care, and to pay for nursing home care if it's needed. To preserve their standard of living. Finding a Long Term Care Insurance Policy ? Focus on the Company
When researching an insurance company to provide long term care insurance (or any kind of insurance), the first thing you want to do is make sure the company is financially solid, with an excellent reputation in its service delivery. There are four rating companies that issue grades on insurance companies; A.M. Best is well known, as is Standard and Poor's. Don't take a policy with company that has lower than an A rating. For your free information guide on Long Term Care Insurance, contact Don Meyer of Associates Health Group, LLC at 303794-9101 or don@ahghealth.com.

Aquamarine
Scott McQueen Who wouldn’t want a gemstone whose various color nuances have such melodious names such as Santa Maria (from the Itabira mine in Brazil), Santa Maria Africana (from mines in Mozambique), Espirito Santo (from the state in Brazil with the same name), and Martha Rocha named after the Brazilian beauty queen of 1954? Who wouldn’t want a gemstone that is said to arouse feelings of friendship, harmony, and trust? Who wouldn’t want a gemstone that, according to traditions, promises marital happiness to the woman who wears it? And who wouldn’t want a gemstone that captures the lucid blue of the oceans and stirs visions of mermaids, treasure chests, and ancient sailing vessels? Who wouldn’t want a gemstone named literally water-sea – from the Latin aqua = water and mare = sea? But aquamarine is much more than a name. It is one of our most popular and best-known gemstones – almost as popular as the ageless ruby, emerald, and sapphire. An outstanding feature of the aquamarine is that it is almost entirely free of inclusions, those solid, liquid, or gaseous foreign bodies enclosed in a mineral or rock. It also has a good hardness that makes it durable and protects it from scratches. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. A: My first thought about this kind of fix-all product is that it may be a great help as a temporary patch, but a damaged gutter or shingle eventually will need to be fixed properly. And major damage, such as a ripped or cracked gutter, probably won’t hold up long with a spray-on patch. I haven’t tried the product in question, so I could, of course, be wrong about its capabilities. However, there are other spray-on rubber brands available at hardware and home-improvement stores. None that I’ve seen claim to fix leaks and large cracks; they’re advertised as sealants and as sprayon nonslip surfacing. They also cost much less, on average, than the product being advertised on television, especially with the cost of shipping and handling removed. If you decide to purchase the product, I’d say it would likely work best as a sealant for gaps around things like air conditioning ducts and where pipes emerge from the wall. Using it to patch areas or objects that bear weight -- like the joints between gutter sections, cracks in a deck’s wood flooring and so on -- is probably not a good use for the product. For patching the roof, I’d be very careful about using it: Eventually, a leaky area of the roof will need more permanent repairs. Replacement of damaged shingles or flashing, as well as repair of the damaged area, could be hindered, not helped, by the presence of spray-on rubber. HOME TIP: Need to mark the location of a leak so you can find it while on the rooftop? In the attic, locate where the water is coming in a drive a 10-penny nail upward so that it pushes up the shingle above. THIS WEEK IN HISTORY (continued): more watermelon than any other people.
Protect your home or business
• The Japanese have produced cube-shaped melons by growing them in glass molds. The melons cost much more than regular melons but fit in refrigerators more easily. Pyramid shaped melons are also occasionally seen. Since these don’t really fit better in a refrigerator, other than the fact that they won’t roll, the reason for these is probably just the novelty. • There are more than 500 varieties of watermelon worldwide, but only a few are grown commercially. Some of the common varieties sold in large numbers are Jubilee, Desert King, Sugar Baby, Peacock and Huck Finn. • Melons, probably muskmelons, since they were available in Egypt many centuries ago, are mentioned in the Bible. The Hebrews who wandered in the desert eating “manna” missed their melons (Numbers 11:5). • There are many melon festivals held celebrating local produce. One festival is the Milan Melon Festival in Milan, Ohio, held every Labor Day Weekend. This year’s festivities, the 53rd annual event, will be September 1-3. There are usually over 50,000 fun-loving people gathered to eat watermelon, muskmelon and more. Festival specialties are watermelon sherbet and muskmelon ice cream. • The Hope Watermelon Festival in Hope, Arkansas, “Home of President Bill Clinton, Governor Mike Huckabee and the World’s Largest Watermelons,” originally started in the 1920s but ended in 1930 because of the Great Depression. Restarted in 1977, it has been held every August since. The festival is where the Bright family has presented many world-record giant watermelons. Ivan and Lloyd Bright presented a 200-pound (91-kg) watermelon in 1979 that held the world record for four years. After losing to a Tennessee farmer, they regained the title in 1985 with a 260 pounder (118 kg). In 2006, the “Guinness Book of World Records” certified Lloyd Bright with another record for a 268.8-pound (122-kg) watermelon. • Cavaillon, in Central Provence, France, claims to be the “World Capital of Melons.” Their specialty is the Charantais melon, which is a small, round, striped melon with orange pulp. • Because of reversed seasons in the southern hemisphere, the Chinchilla Melon Festival in Australia is held in February. The biennial event will be February 14-17, 2013. The festival has many components including: melon bulls-eye, melon skiing and melon ironman. John Allwood set the Guinness World Record for Melon Head Smashing in 2009, cracking 47 watermelons in one minute — with his head, no hands or assistance! Ouch!

by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S.
Master, Academy of General Dentistry Q. How did we arrive at today’s modern tooth cleaning products? A. There is quite a long history of various dental “tools”. Q. A.
How long have we had toothbrushes? Longer than most of us can remember. The toothbrush dates back to the Stone Age, when small twigs or sticks were mashed together to create a broader surface for cleaning around the teeth. The Chinese invented the first bristle toothbrush – in the 1490’s. Europe adopted the bristle toothbrush in the 17th century, and American colonial dentists encouraged its use. In 1880 the first electric toothbrush appeared, but was not very effective. The Swiss invented the first effective electric toothbrush right after World War II ended. In 1961 the first cordless electric toothbrush was marketed and soon became popular. Today we have a nearly-unlimited variety styles, colors, sizes, and designs of toothbrushes.
Q. Q.
When is my toothbrush worn out? Your toothbrush has “had it” when the bristles point every which way. Change your toothbrush every three months, before it gets to “every which way”. Cindy Rose
Q.
What about toothpaste? Early civilizations concocted various powders used to clean teeth. Ingredients included powdered fruit, ground up or burnt shells, sometimes mixed with honey and dried flowers. Other, less appetizing concoctions added rabbit heads, mice, lizard livers, and urine. (At least give them credit for being creative!) Sadly, many of these early toothpastes were highly abrasive or corrosive, which dissolved tooth anamel.
Q.
Toothpaste as we know it first came to market in the 1800’s. These early “modern” toothpastes included soap and chalk powders. The first toothpaste tube came on the scene in 1892. In 1956 Proctor and Gamble developed “Crest” toothpaste, which added flouride to fight cavities.

Toothpicks? Toothpicks have been around for a long, long time. Ancient drawings and texts mention small pointed devices used to clean food from the teeth. Some were carved from twigs or made from silver, gold, bronze or other available metals. Dentistry An Illustrated History states: “In one regard at least, upper-class Romans outdid hygiene-conscious people today: When guests were invited to dinner, they were provided not only with spoons and knives, but also with elaborately decorated toothpicks of metal, often of gold, which they took home with them. And it was considered quite proper to pick the teeth between each course of the meal!” (Now don’t you wish you had a box of those gold toothpicks?)

by these tremendous ballplayers. Of course, any all-star team is made up of players who bring different talents to the game. And this same approach — of combining a collection of skills toward one common effort — can be found in other endeavors, one of which is investing.
Here, then, is one possible lineup of investment moves to consider: Diversify. All investments have both benefits and risks. As an investor, your goal is to help maximize the benefits and minimize the risks — and one of the best ways to do this is by diversifying your money across a range of assets. Diversifying can help you reduce the impact of market volatility that might affect your portfolio if all your money was tied up in one particular asset class, and that asset went through a “down” period. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee profits or protect against loss. Rebalance. Even without your taking significant actions, your portfolio can evolve in ways that may not be to your liking. For example, if some of your more aggressive investments appreciate greatly, they may eventually constitute a larger percentage of your holdings than you had planned — and in doing so, elevate your overall risk level. To prevent this from happening, you should meet with your financial advisor periodically to “rebalance” your portfolio. Seek quality. Many people latch onto “hot” investments, only to be disappointed when they “cool off.” Instead seek quality vehicles — the ones that generally lose the least ground when the market is down and recover more quickly when the market rallies. When you invest in stocks, for instance, look for those companies that have strong management teams, competitive products and good business models. When you purchase bonds, look for those with high ratings from the independent rating agencies. Stay invested. It’s tempting to “take a breather” from investing when the financial markets are volatile. But if you stay on the investment sidelines, you may miss out on the beginning of the next market rally. If you’ve built a diversified portfolio of quality vehicles, it may be easier to stay invested. Know your risk tolerance. If you find yourself constantly fretting about the market’s ups and downs, to the extent that your worries are affecting the quality of your life, you may have a portfolio that’s unsuited to your risk tolerance. Conversely, if you’re dissatisfied with the growth of your investments, you may be investing too cautiously, which could be a concern when you’re striving to reach long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement. Ultimately, there’s no one “right” way for everyone to invest, but you do need to match your portfolio’s composition with your individual risk tolerance and time horizon. Your financial advisor can help your find the “lineup” of investment moves that is right for you. Put it to work soon. All Things Considered In realizing the notion of "bankruptcy" is all but taboo in society, a truth that can be even more frightening is the hard and fast credit card statements we all receive in the mail, month by month. You know what I am referring to: that little grid that gratuitously provides us with the date we can expect to have the bill paid in full, IF we pay the minimum amount indicated AND do not use to card for anything else. It is not uncommon for the time line to be, well, depressing. With that in mind, a lot of people are hesitant to afford themselves the free knowledge available by scheduling a consultation with an attorney to discuss their options. People that open the door to financial freedom through bankruptcy often realize that their credit begins to rebuild faster than ever expected and that life can be comfortable again. The individuals that continue to make those minimum payments will still be in the same posiCindy Rose tion long after a life has been reconstructed after a bankruptcy has been filed. Make the first step towards a new beginning- call today and schedule a consultation to learn what options you have and whether bankruptcy may be the best! Please see our ad on page 1 of Tidbits.
