• Even land-locked areas boast beaches on their lakes and rivers, and people use those for summer fun. But the majority of beach fun happens on the coasts. The Atlantic, the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico and, of course, Hawaii are the largest areas of coastline for North America. • States and provinces with the longest coastlines make the most of their beaches when it comes to tourism. Florida is the beach capital of the continental United States, but for those who are able to hop on an airplane for a beach, Hawaii is definitely a state to visit; after all, as a group of islands, the state is surrounded by water. • A number of beaches claim to be the “world’s longest beach.” Long Beach, Washington, has a big sign proclaiming that on its beach. However, it is only about 25 miles (40 km) long. It does have some terrific claims to fame though. It is a peninsula that sits north of where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean and is where Lewis and Clark stopped on their trek across the west in 1805. turn the page for more!

THE HEAT IS ON! (continued): • The Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery traveled more than 4,000 miles (6,437 km) on an expedition to explore the area west of the Mississippi River. The beach area that they discovered in Washington was not a sun-filled beach. In fact, the area is known for lots of rainy days. Even so, the beach, on the southwest coast of the state, is a fun spot, with more than 60 festivals and celebrations held on the Long Beach Peninsula in 2011. It is home to the World Kite Museum and also the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.

• Another West Coast community named “Long Beach” is the city of Long Beach, California, south of Los Angeles. One of its main tourist attractions is the Queen Mary, a retired ocean liner that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. • Long Beach, Mississippi, is located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It suffered a lot of damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 but is still known as the “friendly city,” its moniker since incorporation in 1905. • On the Atlantic side of the country are Long Beach Island, New Jersey, known as LBI, and Long Beach, New York. Both are islands. LBI is accessible via one bridge or by boat. Long Beach, New York, is an oceanfront island at the southern end of Long Island, New York. It has a 3.5-mile (5.6 km) beach and a 2.25-mile-long boardwalk that was built in 1914 with the help of elephants! • Do you know which state has the longest coastline in the continental United States? It is not Florida or California as you may guess, but Michigan. Michigan’s shoreline is 3,288 miles (5,292 km) long, including 1,056 miles (1,699 km) of island coasts. • Do you know which country has the longest shoreline in the world? Canada. Canada also has an area named “Long Beach.” The Long Beach “unit” of beaches consists of Radar Beach, Long Beach, Combers Beach and Wickaninnish Beach, which run from north to south for 15.5 miles (25 km) and comprise the most popular portion of Pacific Rim National Park. This is the only national park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, the westernmost province of Canada. It has long, sandy beaches, rocky shoreline, a rainforest and more.

I have asked many friends, colleagues, and clients if they take vitamins and why? Most people have told me they do and for many good reasons. Vitamins and supplements appear to correct deficiencies in the body and enhance people’s well being. Next I began to look over feline diets and most diets were labeled balanced and complete for all life stages. The ingredients varied but most had a large percentage of carbohydrates as a food source. Cats in the wild eat very little carbohydrates – cats are meat eaters. The metabolism of felines differs dramatically from canines – cats are true carnivores and dogs are omnivores like humans. In clinical medicine we see many ‘mild’ deficiency syndromes improve when diets are changed or supplements are added. It is apparent that most diets other than mice and birds are deficient in many ways. Reviewing thousands of cat’s body scores and their diets we found most had some deficiencies. The old adage – “You are what you eat.” is more true for cats than for humans. There are many ‘new’ feline diseases that have come to the forefront in the last 30 years that appear to have some dietary basis: diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, urinary tract disease, cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, etc.. Deficiency diseases are becoming one of the biggest areas of research. So, the bottom line with virtually all feline diets . . . they need to be supplemented with quality vitamins, minerals, and other essential fatty acids and proteins. The problem with most vitamin and supplement products is that they are not well formulated for cats and the quality is subpar. We have researched and searched for quality products and there appear to be only 3 to 4 out of thousands that meet balanced nutritional standards. Feeding quality supplements really does help your cat versus feeding ‘empty’ treats loaded with calories. Ask your veterinarian which supplements to add to your cat’s nutrition. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. The country is vastly overpopulated and impoverished, with most people living in the cities. The beach is never crowded, and the humid, tropical area is shark-free! • In the lands “down under,” Australia and New Zealand both have beaches named “90 Mile Beach,” (145 km) even though neither is exactly that long! • The New Zealand beach is about 55 miles (88 km) long and is known for its huge sand dunes that look like the Sahara Desert. Ninety Mile Beach Marine Park in Australia, located along Victoria’s southeast coast, is a long, thin beach that actually stretches for 94.5 miles (152 km). This park is known for having the highest diversity of species of any place in the world. Scientists found 860 different species living in the sand within 12 square yards (10 m2), and 187 species in 1.2 square yards (1 m2). • Apparently, in spite of others claiming the distinction, Praia do Cassino in southern Brazil, near the Uruguay border, is actually the longest beach in the world. It is 149 miles (240 km) long. • Cancun, Mexico, is known for its white sand beaches and the fact that the sand stays cool. The sand is composed of microscopic plankton fossils instead of silica, like most light-colored sand. • Opposite of Cancun’s white sand shores are the black sand beaches found in Hawaii, Alaska, Iceland and Black Sand Beach on the Lost Coast of California. Cooled lava from past volcanic eruptions formed the sand on these beaches, hence, the black color. Like asphalt, it absorbs the sun’s heat so you’ll need to wear shoes! • Wherever beaches are found, the tourists they draw are often a key part of keeping the adjacent towns and cities alive. Summer business sustains the economy year round for many beach areas. • In the state of Florida, beaches may be the most important stream of tourism and revenue. A lot of work is required to keep its beaches in good shape. Hurricanes are a major factor affecting beaches in Florida, as is erosion. In an average year, the state spends about $30 to $40 million for beach maintenance. The state collects approximately $3 to $4 billion from sales taxes paid by tourists, so they get a great return on their investment.

HEATHER WHITESTONE McCALLUM When Heather Whitestone did not react to her mother dropping pans on the kitchen floor at 18 months of age, her mother knew there was a problem. A case of haemophilus influenza as a toddler and the antibiotics used to save her life left Whitestone with a profound hearing loss. • Whitestone’s mom encouraged her to learn to speak and read lips and discouraged sign language. She did learn sign language later. • At age 5, Whitestone started taking ballet lessons. Her mother hoped this would improve her rhythm for speech, which it did, and it also was a huge boost to her self-esteem through the years. Ballet was her talent when she competed in the Miss America pageant. • Born in Dothan, Alabama, in 1973, Whitestone looked to another deaf Alabaman, Helen Keller, as her role model. Mariska

CORRECTION: It was recently reported in this column (as well as many other entertain- Ryan Harris ment columns) that Mariska Hargitay would be in only 13 episodes of this coming season’s “Law and Order: SVU.” Well, I am happy to amend that report with news from the Big Guy himself: Showrunner and executive producer Warren Leight contacted me to dispel the rumor. He told me: “Mariska will be in all 22 ‘SVU’ episodes this season. Rumor she is leaving at 13 just wrong.” With Christopher Meloni’s Detective Stabler leaving, it’s a relief to learn Mariska’s Detective Benson will be sticking around. *** Q: It seems like every other year, there is a rumor that “Jurassic Park 4” is going to made. But so far, no movie. Will it ever happen? -- Paul G., Miami A: All signs point to “yes.” Producer/director Steven Spielberg told a crowd of enthusiastic sci-fi fans at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con fan convention that there will be another “Jurassic Park,” and it might be only two to three years away. Steven said that he has a story and a screenwriter ready to go for the fourth movie of the dinosaur-clone series, and Steven himself will serve as producer. *** Q: I really love MTV’s new teen comedy, “Awkward.” The actor who plays Matty looks really familiar. Can you tell me what else I might have seen him in recently? -- Cara D., via e-mail A: Beau Mirchoff, 21, plays Matty, the nice-guy jock with a heart -- and it appears he also has a thing for our heroine, Jenna. You might remember Beau from “Heartland,” or from his turn as Drea de Matteo’s son on “Desperate Housewives.” Of his year on “DH,” Beau told me: “I learned so much from all the people on that set. They are pros, and they know what they’re doing. I learned a lot from Jeffrey Nordling, who played my father, and Drea de Matteo, who was my mother. I had a big crush on Drea. I hope it didn’t read on camera. That would have been creepy.” Playing a teen on “Awkward” has Beau remembering his own awkward time in high school: “Everything seems like such a dire situation. Like it’s the last time you’ll be able to do something. Or it’s the end of the world if you can’t go out with that girl. But it’s really not, and it’s so insignificant looking back. But you’re growing up and you’re figuring things out.” *** Q: I was so sad to hear about the passing of singer Amy Winehouse. Do authorities know what caused her death? -- Grant D., via e-mail A: Toxicology reports will probably take weeks to get back, so it might be a while before we know what killed the troubled songstress, who was only 27 when she passed away on July 23. Amy had publicly battled addiction, but police say there were no signs of drug or paraphernalia in her home at the time of her death. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Buy Smart! School Starts! Scott McQueen Tsavorite gets its name from the worldfamous Tsavo National Park located in Kenya where only a few mines yield the shining green garnet. In 1967 Campbell R. Bridges, a British geologist was searching for gemstones in Tanzania (East Africa) when he came across some peculiar potato-like nodules of rock. After examining them he realized he had discovered green grossularite, a mineral that belongs to the colorful garnet group. He was impressed at the extraordinary color and superior clarity but the tremendous forces of nature over millions of years had damaged most of the crystals so badly that there were only grains or fragments to be found. Bridges postulated that the geologic seam bearing the gemstones might continue across the border into Kenya. He was right, and in 1971 he discovered tsavorite in neighboring Kenya. Here Bridges was able to register officially and begin to mine the deposit, but Africa would prove a challenge. To protect him self from wild animals he lived in a tree house, and to keep his gemstones from being stolen he used a python to watch over them. Now, thanks to Campbell Bridges, you can purchase vivid green tsavorite at a reasonable price and you won’t have to worry about the python. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. She passed six reading levels in three years, catching up with her peers. Whitestone graduated from a public high school in Birmingham, Alabama, with a 3.6 grade point average. • She won her first beauty pageant in the Miss America system as a student at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. From there, she followed up as first runner up to Miss Alabama in 1992. • In 1994, Whitestone won the Miss Alabama contest and went to the Miss America Pageant to represent her state for the 1995 contest. She danced a ballet to “Via Dolorosa” for her talent. • Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford were the hosts of the Miss America Pageant when Whitestone won her title. When Regis announced the first runner up, Miss Virginia, Whitestone couldn’t hear the announcement. She didn’t know she had won until Miss Virginia turned to her and pointed as she hugged her. • With her win, Whitestone became the first person with a disability to win the title of Miss America. Another interesting Tidbit about the 1995 pageant: The telecast lasted for three hours, the longest in pageant history. The organization highlighted its 75-year history during the program.

• During her reign, Whitestone showcased her program called S.T.A.R.S., which stands for “Success Through Action and Realization of your DreamS.” The five points of the S.T.A.R.S. program are: positive attitude, belief in a dream, willingness to work hard, facing obstacles, and building a strong support team. • Showing such great determination to reach her goals and overcome obstacles, Whitestone is a great role model for people of all ages and abilities. She worked hours to learn to dance and speak. She didn’t let her lack of hearing discourage her from reaching her dreams.

• Whitestone has written four books since touring the country as Miss America. They are: “Listening with My Heart” (1997), “Believing the Promise” (1999), “Let God Surprise You” (2003) and “Heavenly Crowns” (2004). • Whitestone is married and has three sons. She is a motivational speaker affiliated with the Washington Speaker’s Bureau. Some of the topics she speaks on are: achievement, Christian faith & inspiration, courage and overcoming obstacles and challenges.

HOT SALSA

Salsa is the Spanish word for hot sauce. Whether you like it hot, medium or mild, it is a taste that has grown in popularity in North America in the last 20 years. • The mixing of tomatoes, onions, hot peppers and other ingredients for salsa has been happening since at least as far back as the 1500s in Central and South America among the Aztecs and other cultures. • A Spanish priest and missionary, Alonso de Molina, is credited with calling the hot sauce mix “salsa” in 1571. • The first bottled hot sauce appeared in the United States in Massachusetts in 1807. In 1868, Edmund McIlhenny started bottling his hot sauce, Tabasco, on Avery Island, west of New Orleans. Tabasco hot sauce surged in popularity and continues to be a huge seller. Other hot sauces soon emerged, and many have been around for 100-plus years like Tabasco.

You just got into an accident…what do you do now?

1. First, remain calm and check for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately. Do not move your vehicle unless you are in immediate danger and it would be safer to get your vehicle in a different location. After that, you should exchange info (names, any other vehicles involved, phone numbers, driver’s license numbers, license plate numbers and insurance info) and check to see if there were any witness’. Note the location, time and date and take pictures if you have a camera available. 2. As soon as you have taken care of the above, contact your insurance agent. They’ll advise you on calling the claim in. 3. At this point, the insurance company will have a list of recommended body shops that you can use. However, you do have a choice to use any shop that you would like to. 4. When getting estimates, there is no need to get multiple estimates. If you like the service and feeling you get from the first body shop you stop at, then, you’re more than welcome to stop at that and use them. 5. Once the car is at the shop of your choice, you are the only one that can authorize the shop to start working on your car. If you’re at-fault for the accident, you’ll be responsible to pay your deductible once the work is done and you go to pick up the car. If you’re not at-fault, you won’t have to pay anything out of pocket. 6. While the car is in the shop, you may need a rental car. If you are at-fault and have rental reimbursement on your policy, a rental will be provided up to the policy limits. If you’re not at-fault, the other insurance company will provide you with a similar style car while yours is being repaired. 7. Just remember, that even when a claim goes 100% smoothly, it’s still an inconvenience. Don’t hesitate to contact your agent with any questions during the process.

Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Like the Weather, Hot Investment Can Cool Off We’re in the “Dog Days” of summer – traditionally the hottest, steamiest time of year. But in a few weeks, the temperatures will begin to cool down. Nature isn’t alone in this heating-and-cooling pattern — Cindy Rose you can also find evidence of it in the investment world. To be specific, today’s “hot” investments can lose their sizzle quickly — which means that, as an investor, you’ll need to take steps to avoid being left out in the cold. An investment can become “hot” — that is, its price can shoot up — for any of a number of reasons. For example, a company that provides a well-known product or service may decide to “go public” by making its shares available to investors; when this happens, the stocks become “hot” for a while. An investment may also become hot if a favorable event occurs, as might be the case with a drug company that gains permission to sell a medicine that’s much in demand. And some investments heat up because an “expert” is touting them in the media. But although different investments may get hot for different reasons, they all share one thing in common: They will cool off. In fact, by the time you and many other investors hear about a hot stock, it may already be cooling off. If you buy into an investment that’s been hot for a while, you should recognize that its “upside potential” may not be what you think. To help achieve your financial goals, you may be better off by not chasing after hot stocks. Instead, consider these ideas: Increase share ownership. One key to building wealth is to increase the amount of shares you own in your investments. Hot stocks are often expensive stocks, so you may be limited in the number of shares you can purchase. As an alternative, look for quality investments that are trading at reasonable prices. You might also consider buying additional shares in quality companies you already own. Buy appropriate investments. Even if you can afford to buy some shares in hot stocks, should you? These stocks may not be suitable for your needs, for any number of reasons: too risky for your risk tolerance, too similar to other stocks you already own, and so on. You need to own investments that are appropriate for your individual needs. Of course, you also need to keep in mind that any investment in stocks — whether hot or not — will fluctuate with changes in market conditions and may be worth more or less than your original investment when you sell. Diversify your holdings. By continually pursuing hot investments, you might end up with an unbalanced, nondiversified portfolio. By diversifying your holdings, you can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. However, diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Think long term. Chasing hot stocks is strictly a shortterm move. Successful investors adhere to long-term strategies that require discipline, patience and a constant focus on the future. By following these suggestions, you’re unlikely to experience the “thrill” of chasing after hot investments — but you will get the satisfaction of building a portfolio designed to help meet your important investment goals.

IT’S BETTER TO REVIEW YOUR ANNUITY THAN RETHINK YOUR RETIREMENT. Call your financial advisor today for details.

Jesus said in Mark 11:23-24 (KJV) “ For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” Many Christians find this verse, begin to act it out, and bam… the devil knocks them flat on their behind. Well what happened, isn’t God’s Word true? Well of course it is but you have to make a decision to defend yourself against the attacks of the enemy. And you can whip him every single time if you will do these four things. #1 You have to make a faith decision to stand no matter what. You must decide within yourself that you are not going to waver, you are not going to be moved until the answer you need comes, it is a matter of your personal will, to stand above all things. #2 You need to resist the devil and the messages he brings to you. Resist the images of failure, resist the messages of lack or sickness, rebuke those things in the Name of Jesus and then focus your mind on the Word of God and His promises to you. Your Bible is full of promises of good things God has for you but they must be received by faith. #3 You must spend time in the Word of God every day. Our earthly carnal minds need to be renewed, our spirit is brand new, but our mind and our will and our emotions are still products of our old life, our old way of thinking and doing things. And #4 make sure that the only words that come out of your mouth are faith filled words, God has put the power of life and death within our mouths. Satan does not have authority over you unless you authorize him to steal, kill and destroy in your life. Satan is not an equal being next to God, Jesus came that He might destroy the works of the devil, he is a defeated foe and never let him forget that! Jesus has already won the battle for you and for me, now let’s just enforce that victory using faith filled words and the Word of God. If you will do this, you will win every single time. And if much of what you have read today is new for you, I invite you to come visit us this next Sunday morning at 10:30 and meet a wonderful group of people who will love you and encourage you. You will find a safe atmosphere where the Word of Faith is preached and you will be empowered and equipped for the battle and where you win every time! God Bless you! First, Lucci is 99 percent set to become a regRyan Harris ular on “Desperate President & Founder Housewives” when it returns Sept. 25 for its eighth season. “All My Children” exits ABC on Friday, Sept. 23. Lucci started on “All My Children” when it premiered on Jan. 5, 1970. During the show’s 41 years, she received 19 Emmy nominations, winning once. Can “AMC” survive the move without Erica Kane? “All My Children’s” departure leaves more questions than answers. Is ABC trying to appease the soap’s angry fan base by passing it on to the unknown, unproven Prospect Park Online starting Sept. 26 to get off the hook for canceling the show? ABC claims it cut “AMC” loose because it was too expensive to produce. Can this new online network afford the production costs, or was jettisoning Lucci and her large salary part of a plan to bring costs down? Many longtime actors on the daytime drama have not been contacted to make the move. Is the intention to feature younger, less pricey cast members in order to save more money and appeal to a younger audience online? After all, it is called “All My CHILDREN”! In true soap fashion, we’ll just have to stay tuned! *** Jack Nicholson will go before the cameras in the film “Americana,” scheduled for a December 2012 release. Set in the Confederate south in l860, Nicholson will play a farmer and slave owner who flees to Brazil and finds a new love and a fresh start, only to be haunted by his past. Kate Winslet is said to be his leading lady. And speaking of Kate, she has been nominated for an Emmy for her starring role in “Mildred Pierce,” the five-part mini-series reboot of the 1945 film that Joan Crawford won an Oscar for. HBO’s “Mildred Pierce” has netted a record 21 Emmy nominations, including one for Winslet as best actress in a mini-series. She has just completed the film version of the Broadway hit “God of Carnage” with Oscar winners Jodie Foster and Christoph Waltz and “Chicago” Oscar nominee John C. Reilly. The film will have its first showing at the Venice Film Festival in September. It was shot in Paris in February, with controversial award-winning director Roman Polanski at the helm. Before Kate, who won an Oscar in ‘08 for “The Reader,” shoots with Nicholson, she will film “Labor Day” in early 2012 for director Jason Reitman (“Juno”). Josh Brolin will be her leading man. James Gandolfini, Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden and Jeff Daniels of the original Broadway cast were completely shut out of the film version.
