A LIFETIME OF

by Kathy Wolfe

August 24 has been named Vesuvius Day, making this week a good time to take a closer look at this famous volcano and a few other notable ones. Follow along as Tidbits brings you these explosive facts. • Mount Vesuvius is mainland Europe’s only active volcano, the only one to have erupted within the last 100 years. (The island of Sicily is home to Mount Etna, which is Europe’s most active volcano, having experienced a series of eruptions since 2001.) • Vesuvius is a strato volcano, because it has explosive eruptions as well as pyroclastic flows. This means it emits a fast-moving current of hot gas and rock that can reach a speed of up to 450 mph (700 km/hr) and reach a temperature of 1,830 degrees F (1,000 C). Vesuvius was formed from the collision of two tectonic plates. Volcanoes are usually found where plates are either moving away from each other or colliding. • The most lava ever recorded from an eruption from Vesuvius was in 1906. Italy was preparing for the 1908 Summer Olympics when the disaster occurred, causing extensive damage to the city of Naples and killing more than 100 people. Because Italy did not have the funds to rebuild Naples, the Olympics were switched to London.

MOUNT VESUVIUS (continued): • Most folks know that Mount Vesuvius destroyed the city of Pompeii in 79 A.D., with a death toll estimated at 16,000. The cloud of volcanic ash reached heights of 20.5 miles (33 km) and a flow of molten rock and pumice at a rate of 1.5 million tons per second The rapidly-falling ash made it difficult to breathe with millions of tons quickly burying the city, resulting in a well-preserved scene of the ancient city’s life. Strangely enough, pockets of air within the ash hardened around the victims, enabling excavators to pour plaster into the openings forming a mold for the remains. The ruins were discovered in 1748 by a surveying engineer during the digging of a water line. Excavation on the ruins began, with archaeologists finding loaves of bread and jars of fruit preserves still intact. The project has continued for more than 260 years, the longest continually excavated site in the world.

• About 250 years into the excavation of Pompeii, nearly 1,050 casts had been created from impressions of bodies found in the ash. It’s believed that nearly one-third of the city still lies buried. In 1980, 300 more bodies were found in nearby Herculaneum. • One eyewitness account survived from the 79 A.D. eruption of Vesuvius, that of Pliny the Younger, who observed the tragedy from across the Bay of Naples. Pliny, a Roman statesman, documented the details of the death of his uncle, who was attempting to rescue people during the early stages of the eruption. Pliny later interviewed survivors and recorded the information in letters to his historian friend. Those who study volcanoes use the term “Plinian” to refer to large volcanic eruptions in which streams of gas and ash are violently sent to a height of several miles. • There have been many eruptions since the annihilation of Pompeii, at least once every century, although none has been as large as the 79 A.D. eruption. Vesuvius erupted at least six times in the 12th and 18th centuries, and eight times during the 1800s. The 20th century experienced three eruptions with the most recent in 1944, when a two-week-long eruption occurred. American airmen were stationed at the Pompeii Airfield during World War II, a few miles from the base of the volcano, and fled when the eruption began, leaving behind 88 aircraft, all of which were a total loss. Twelve lives were lost as a result of this eruption. • Today the slopes of Vesuvius are covered with heavy vegetation and shrubs, and vineyards have been planted. Although its current activity seems to produce nothing but occasional steam from vents at the bottom of the crater, geologists who study the mountain maintain that it is a very dangerous volcano that will erupt again. Because it is the most densely-populated volcanic region in the world, with more than 3 million people living within 20 miles of the crater, an eruption today will be much more devastating than previous ones. While the 79 A.D. eruption destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum, many cities would now be buried, including Naples, which is Europe’s 9th most populated urban area and Italy’s 4th largest urban economy. • In 1995, the Italian government officially declared the area around the volcano a national park, thereby prohibiting further building in an attempt to reduce the population in the danger zone. They have demolished illegally constructed buildings and even offered financial incentives to citizens for moving away.

Kittens that fail to develop social skills usually have had an unstable kittenhood. Orphaning or early separation from mother and littermates has a profound effect in personality expression. Aggressive behavior, lack of litter box etiquette, inability to socialize with humans, and destructive behavior are a few unstable personality disorders that affect cats having a poor human/cat bond.

Well socialized cats were likely well socialized kittens. Kittens learn from their mother’s calm or fearful attitude toward humans. Although feeding times are important in forming the human/cat bond, it is also vital to include playing, grooming, and stroking to develop a kitten’s trust of humans. Kittens usually suckle until 8 weeks of age but they may continue to suckle longer on littermates, inanimate objects, and humans for comfort and security. Orphaned kittens or those weaned too soon are more likely to exhibit inappropriate suckling behaviors later in life. Ideally kittens need to stay with their littermates until 12 weeks of age. Many behavioral problems that domestic cats have can be traced back to early poor socialization problems.

Scott McQueen By its name you would think it would be red, but instead bloodstone is green jasper speckled with bright red spots of iron oxide. It is often referred to as the martyr’s gem because medieval Christians would carve scenes of the crucifixion and of martyrs on bloodstone. An ancient Christian legend held that bloodstone was formed when the blood of Christ fell from his hands, feet, and side and stained some jasper that was at the foot of the cross. In ancient times, bloodstone was thought to be able to stop hemorrhages with only a touch. Some think it relieves stomach and bowel pain and strengthens the blood purifying organs and improves blood circulation. Bloodstone is also supposed to have a positive influence on a bladder. Today in India finely pulverized bloodstone is used as a medication and aphrodisiac. It is mined in Brazil, China, India, Australia, and the United States (Wyoming). Quality specimens of bloodstone are not easy to find though it remains a quite affordable stone

Imagine... NO MORE MONTHLY MONITORING FEES!!! The Dog Days of Summer Many homeowners ask us what they can do to keep their lawns looking good during the “Dog Days of Summer” until the weather cools down in September. Here are a few tips to help you lawn through this period: Water infrequently and deeply in the Morning Infrequent, deep watering to a three or four inch depth is better than light sprinkling. Your lawn needs a minimum of 1½ inches of water weekly depending on soil type, wind and rainfall amounts. This will encourage strong healthy roots.

• • • • •

HD Security Cameras Infrared up to 260 feet in total darkness DVR systems that can record 6 months Motion activated to alert your phone No monthly monitoring fees YOU’RE IN CONTROL! With Advanced Network/Mobile Ready Technology

One common mistake with irrigation systems is that too little water is applied frequently which can lead to a shallow soaking of the soil that promotes shallow grass roots which lead to disease or insect problems during the summer. Measure the amount of water with empty tuna fish cans to verify the amount of weekly water. One rule of thumb is 15 – 30 minutes for pop up heads (and more for rotor heads since they deliver less water per square foot). Midday watering - during hot, dry weather - can waste water, since much of the water evaporates. Evening watering promotes the spread of disease. Early morning is the best time to water. Keep mowing weekly with a razor sharp blade Lawns respond best when mowed weekly. Although the grass may not be as tall as in the spring and you may not get as many clippings it is important keep mowing weekly. Lawns that are mowed weekly increase the density of the grass because it causes the grass to grow laterally rater that erectly. Dull mower blades tear and rip the grass leaving ragged edges which stress the grass making it susceptible to disease and insects. Sharp blades avoid this problem with a cleaner cut. Don’t stop fertilizing The biggest mistake is to stop fertilizing. Although the grass may appear to be almost dormant during the hot summer months, the application of fertilizer (think food for your lawn) is best when providing nutrients for the future rather than reacting to preventable problem in the future. Using a slow release fertilizer feeds the grass during the hot summer without burning it and prepares it for the fall when the grass revives with cooler weather. Not fertilizing during this time of the year is like humans skipping meals; your lawn will feel and be lousy. Lawns are healthier when fed on a consistent basis. BOLO (Be On Look Out) Be on the lookout for insect and lawn diseases. Do you see any brown spots? Are they growing is size? Since the Dog Days of Summer can cause stress on the grass it is susceptible to insects and disease. Get professional help quickly if you notice this. Quick action will minimize the damage and minimize the cost to repair. Plan for Fall Do you want your lawn to look as nice as a golf course? One of the golf course professionals secrets to success is they aerate and over seed in later summer or early fall. When you aerate, you also have the opportunity to over seed. When done at this time, it allows the Kentucky bluegrass seed to germinate and mature before winter sets in. Our best looking lawns are the ones we aerate and over seed.

Ask the Dentist

by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S.

Master, Academy of General Dentistry Q. My 7 year-old daughter has no cavities. Should she have sealants placed to protect her teeth, or can she just brush and floss? Q. It depends on several factors. You and your daughter can control some factors, such as effective oral hygiene, diet (sweet snacking), and regular preventive dental visits. However, you cannot control the hereditary anatomy of her teeth. That is, some children (and adult) teeth have deep pits and fissured grooves (“groovy teeth”). It can become nearly impossible for the toothbrush bristle to reach that last little “sugar bug” entrenched deep into the deep pit or fissure. This plus even a little “sugar” in the diet from processed foods can set up decay. Research has shown that almost everybody has a 95% chance of getting cavities in these areas. A well-placed sealant can protect the “groovy” tooth surface from bacteria and acid attack caused by sweet snacking. R. What is a sealant? Q. A. sealant is a thin plastic film bonded to the chewing surfaces of the tooth. The sealant fills in the deep pits and grooves where bacteria can hide. The “sugar bugs” have fewer places set up shop, which prevents decay. It’s important to note that a sealant is only effective in the pits and groove areas, not the smooth surfaces of the tooth that are easier to clean. Q. A. Are they effective? Q. Yes! About 80% of decay occurs in the deep pits and grooves of the chewing surfaces. Combined with twice-daily brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste, healthy nutrition, and twice-yearly visits to the dentist, properly applied sealants are 100 percent effective in preventing cavities in these areas. Sealants have been described as “the greatest advance in preventive dentistry since fluoride”. R. A. Aren’t sealants just for kids? Q. No! Adults can have “groovy teeth” too. They can protect any areas of adult pits and fissures – that do not already have a filling present. A. Are sealants expensive? No! Sealants cost much less than fillings and help reduce future dental expenses. Most insurance companies recognize that sealants are cost-effective, and provide up to 100% of the cost, especially for sealants in molars. Please send in your questions. Pyramid Court • Suite 400 • Englewood CO 80112 Brookside Inn Wins Bronze Award No one was more excited than the Schumann family, the founders and owners of Brookside Inn, when the facility was given the Bronze Award from American Health Care Association. The Award recognizes organizations for their vision, mission and appreciation for customersʻ needs and environment. “What an honor!” said Sarah Schumann. The Schumann family has nurtured Brookside Inn since itʼs birth in 1997 but the heart of Brookside Inn began to beat years earlier while Dr. Fredrick Schumann was still practicing medicine. The Schumannʼs involved themselves in elder advocacy. This journey would lead them to envision a new brand of health care - a skilled nursing facility that would not only fulfill medical needs but be a thriving community that would encourage and celebrate life. The Award was not Brookside Innʼs only achievement, the facility also maintained a five star rating from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services which makes four consecutive years Brookside Inn has received the distinction. “We are so pleased with the many acknowledgements and awards weʼve received and we know Brookside Inn will continue to top industry standards and set the bar for performance excellence.” said Sarah Schumann.
