• It’s estimated that about 10% of the population is lefthanded. But while many are considered left-handed, very few are 100% left-handed, because they perform many tasks right-handed, such as golf or batting a ball. In contrast, the percentage of “righties” who are 100% right-handed is very high.

• People are left- or right-handed due to an unequal distribution of motor skills, and handedness is determined by which hand is more dexterous when performing tasks. Lefties use the right side of their brains, and right-handers operate in the left hemisphere.

• Infants have usually developed hand preference by six months of age. Some babies show a preference for one hand while still in the womb, which can be seen by observing which hand is predominantly held close to the mouth. Ultrasounds reveal that 90% of the unborn favor their right thumb.

Research suggests that premature babies and those who have experienced trauma during gestation are more likely to be left-handed. There’s also a link to mothers who are over 40 – they are 128% more likely to have a left-handed baby than a woman in her 20s.

• About 1% of the world’s adults are equally skilled with both hands and are dubbed ambidextrous.

Other people are awkward with both hands and are said to be ambisinister or ambilevous.

• There is no definitive answer as to why handedness exists. Many studies have been conducted in an attempt to identify characteristics shared by left-handers. Research indicates that they have unusually good visual-spatial skills. Creativity, music, perception, emotions, and spatial awareness are controlled by the right side of the brain. This makes lefties good architects, artists, mathematicians, and musicians. Consider that Albert Einstein, Mozart, Beethoven, Leonardo da Vinci, and Henry Ford were all left-handed. Four out of the five designers of the original Macintosh computer were lefties as well.

• University studies suggest there are more lefties with an IQ over 140 than right-handed people, a list that includes Einstein, Isaac Newton, and Benjamin Franklin. A study of 100,000 students taking the SAT test revealed that 20% of the topscoring group were lefties, twice the rate of lefthandedness in the general population.

• There also seems to be a connection with athletic ability. About half of fencers are left-handed.

Tennis greats Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, and Rod Laver are lefties, and we can’t deny the talent of baseball southpaws Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, and Reggie Jackson.

• But all is not easy for left-handed folks. Because the left hemisphere of the brain controls speech, language, and writing, lefties controlled by the right side of the brain are more likely to be dyslexic, stutter, and have autism. They also process emotions differently than righties and are more prone to negative emotions, such as anger.

In the physical realm, lefties seem to have more allergies, migraines, and insomnia. And since the right side of the brain has a lower tolerance for alcohol, left-handed people are more likely to become alcoholics.

• Being left-handed has had negative connotations for centuries. In the 17th century, lefties were thought to be witches and warlocks, and black magic is often referred to as the “left-hand path.”

But Incas believed that left-handers possessed magical abilities and could perform healing. If you receive a “left-handed compliment,” it is deemed unflattering. The Bible mentions the right hand 100 times, all in a positive light, while the left hand is mentioned 25 times, all negatively.

The English language even derives the word “sinister,” which means threatening or menacing, from the Latin word sinistra, which can mean either “left” or “unlucky.”

I have asked many friends, colleagues, and clients if they take vitamins and why? Most people have told me they do and for many good reasons. Vitamins and supplements appear to correct deficiencies in the body and enhance people’s well being.

In clinical medicine we see many ‘mild’ deficiency syndromes improve when diets are changed or supplements are added. It is apparent that most diets other than mice and birds are deficient in many ways. Reviewing thousands of cat’s body scores and their diets we found most had some deficiencies. The old adage – “You are what you eat.” is more true for cats than for humans. There are many ‘new’ feline diseases that have come to the forefront in the last 30 years that appear to have some dietary basis: diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, urinary tract disease, cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, etc..

Deficiency diseases are becoming one of the biggest areas of research.

So, the bottom line with virtually all feline diets . . . they need to be supplemented with quality vitamins, minerals, and other essential fatty acids and proteins. The problem with most vitamin and supplement products is that they are not well formulated for cats and the quality is subpar.

We have researched and searched for quality products and there appear to be only 3 to 4 out of thousands that meet balanced nutritional standards. The Russian Czar Alexander II (1818-1881) has the distinction of having his name on this rare gemstone. The very first crystals were discovered in April 1834 in the emerald mines near the Tokovaya River in the Ural Mountains. The discovery was made on the same day the future Czar of Russia came of age. Because the stone shows both read and green, the principal colors of old Imperial Russia, it became the national stone of Czarist Russia.

George Frederick Kunz (1856-1932), master gemologist for Tiffany’s, produced some beautiful series of rings and platinum ensembles at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. This lovely stone was also used in Victorian jewelry produced in England during the Victorian era.

The distinctive feature about this stone is its ability to change color. In daylight Alexandrite appears green or bluish-green but when brought into incandescent light it will turn to a soft shade of red, purplish-red or raspberry red.

Because of its ability to change colors Alexandrite is one of the most valuable gemstones of all! Scarcity is another reason for its high value. Its formation required specific geological conditions and millions of years to form.

Q: My shower fixtures have built up a coating of some kind of scaly gunk, and it’s also on the bottom of the glass shower door. Is there a way to clean it off without destroying the finish? -- Clark in Miami A: One of the best home-cleaning recipes for mineral buildup is baking soda and vinegar -- the same stuff kids use to make science project “volcanoes.”

It’s an inexpensive first step to cleaning scale from your fixtures.

Ideally, you should remove your shower head in order to clean it thoroughly. Turn off water to the shower or bathroom at the nearest shutoff point.

(This might be the shutoff for the entire home.)

Carefully unscrew the shower head. If you can’t turn it by hand, wrap a soft cloth around the shower head to get a better grip. If you need to use an adjustable wrench to loosen the shower head, wet the cloth and wrap it around the area that will be gripped by the wrench to prevent it from scratching the finish.

Wash the shower head in warm soapy water to remove loose debris and rinse. Next, make a paste using approximately 2 parts baking soda to 1 part vinegar. As the paste foams, apply it to the shower head wherever mineral scale exists, using a soft brush. Pay attention to the sprayer holes: scale tends to build up and reduce the effectiveness of the spray. Set the shower head to the side for 10 to 20 minutes to let the foam work.

Next, brush the paste onto the shower controls, particularly mineral buildup areas. Let the paste sit for at least 20 minutes. Some homeowners wrap the fixtures in plastic to prevent the paste from drying out during this period, but that’s up to you.

Scrub the fixtures and shower head with a soft brush, applying more baking soda-vinegar paste as necessary. Rinse them with clear water. If some mineral scale remains, reapply the paste, let it sit for several more minutes and rinse again.

HOME TIP: Common ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, lemon, etc., are inexpensive and effective alternatives to commercial cleansers.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Sept. 5, 1666, firefighters in London begin blowing up homes in a desperate attempt to halt the spread of a great fire through the city. By the time the fire was finally snuffed out the following day, more than 100,000 people had been left homeless.

• On Sept. 7, 1776, during the Revolutionary War, the 8-foot-long American submersible craft Turtle attempts to attach a time bomb to the hull of British Admiral Richard Howe’s flagship Eagle in New York Harbor. It was the first use of a submarine in warfare.

• On Sept. 6, 1915, a prototype tank nicknamed Little Willie rolls off the assembly line in England. It weighed 14 tons, got stuck in trenches and crawled over rough terrain at only 2 mph. For secrecy, production workers were told the vehicles would be used to carry water on the battlefield. The new vehicles were shipped in crates labeled “tank,” and the name stuck.
