• The Bible contains the first written reference to salt, recorded in the Book of Job around 2250 B.C. Salt is mentioned in 31 other places, including the story of Lot’s wife being turned into a pillar of salt when she disobeyed the words of angels. As she and her family were fleeing the destruction of the wicked city of Sodom, she was told not to look back, but she turned to gaze at the blaze and was transformed. • There are two chief methods of producing salt — evaporation and mining. In the evaporation process, salty sea water is guided into large clay forms for natural evaporation by the sun. Sea salt is the source for about 80 mineral elements essential to proper body function, including iron, iodine, sulfur and magnesium. In underground mines, salt is found in veins and domes and is mined by large machines snaking their way through passageways. Large underground deposits can be found around the globe, including parts of Ontario, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan in Canada, and New York, turn the page for more!

PINCH OF SALT (continued): Michigan, Texas, Ohio, Kansas and New Mexico in the United States. There are such large beds near Salzburg, Austria, it was aptly named “The City of Salt.” The United Kingdom is also home to extensive salt beds. • Throughout history, salt has been a valuable item of trade. Governments have frequently controlled the price of salt, maintaining a monopoly by charging special taxes. Salt taxes have supported monarchs and funded wars. During the Middle Ages, salt was so expensive, it earned the nickname “white gold.” • Salt has been used as currency for centuries. Even up to the beginning of the 20th century, onepound bars of salt were used as money in what is now the country of Ethiopia. Early civilization advanced tremendously once salt’s ability to preserve food was discovered. No longer were people dependent on what was readily available to eat, and long-distance travel also increased as preserved provisions could be transported. Early Roman soldiers’ wages were paid in salt, or salarium argentum, a term from which we derive our English word “salary.” Romans even built roads specifically for transporting salt, such as the Via Salaria, which led from Rome to the Adriatic Sea, where a salt-producing area was located. In ancient Greece, salt was traded for slaves, leading to the expression, “He is not worth his salt.” In early American history, President Thomas Jefferson hoped that the Lewis and Clark expedition would be able to locate a mountain of salt rumored to stand near the Missouri River, which would have been a very valuable find. American soldiers also received salt as salary during the War of 1812 because the government lacked currency to pay them. • Many cultures use salt in their religious rituals because it symbolizes “incorruptible purity.” The Shinto religion uses salt to purify an area. A handful of salt is even thrown into the center of the wrestling ring by Shintos to ward off wicked spirits before Sumo wrestlers begin their match. Buddhist custom calls for throwing salt over the shoulder upon entering a house after attending a funeral. This is to frighten off evil spirits that might be clinging to the homeowner’s back. Several European countries follow the tradition of throwing a handful of salt into a dead person’s coffin before the burial in order to keep the devil away. In some cultures, a bride pours it into her shoes for luck, and parents rub it all over newborn babies. • Lots of folks believe that spilling salt will bring bad luck. This superstition may have its origins in Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of The Last Supper. Close observation shows an upset salt container at Continued on page 7

Cat Q & A Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc
Cure Hyperthyroidism – 131I “Charlie” is a friendly, fifteen year old, red tabby that just recently started caterwauling at night, played non-stop most of his waking moments, and had a ravenous appetite. Even with his increase in eating (2x’s normal) “Charlie” has actually lost a pound in the last month. Cats that have these signs should be blood tested for hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is usually caused by a benign tumor (99%) of the thyroid gland that produces too much thyroid hormone – L-thyroxine (T4). Metabolism is increased so increased calories are needed to run the body. At a certain point “Charlie” was unable to eat enough calories to meet his metabolic needs and he began to lose weight. Hyperthyroidism is the most common endocrine disease in the cat, followed by diabetes. Affected cats commonly have enlarged thyroid nodules in their ventral neck that can be easily palpated. A T4 and free T4 ED blood tests are use to confirm the disease. Early disease sometimes is difficult to define and serial testing every 3 months is necessary. Hyperthyroidism is a whole body disease. It causes high blood pressure (hypertension), toxic effects from too much thyroid hormone (poisoning), heart changes (hypertrophy), destruction of the kidneys (uremic poisoning and hypertension), hormonal abnormalities (parathyroid glands, pituitary, pancreas, and liver dysfunction), and personality disorders (obsessive compulsive behaviors, vocalizing, and constant play) are a some of many problems hyperthyroid cats present with. Other diseases that are confused with hyperthyroidism are liver disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, GI lymphoma, underlying viral diseases (FeLV/FIV), and any chronic disability that causes depressed metabolism.

The “gold standard” of treatment in humans and cats is nuclear medicine – radio-iodine therapy (I-131). Other therapies such as surgery or medication are less effective and have many side-effects. Senior cats treated with I-131 usually live longer (an average of 4-5 years) whereas cats on medication live an average of 2 years or less. I-131 therapy in the long run is very cost effective and the disease is cured. The cure word is rarely used in human or veterinary medicine when spoken in connection with chronic disease. The cure rate is >96% on the first treatment and approaches 100% in the cats that need a rare second treatment.

I-131 treatment for hyperthyroidism zaps the abnormal tumor cells and leaves good tissue behind. I-131 is the prototype therapy for all disease, killing the bad and leaving the good without side-effects. Cat Specialist has been a leader in I-131 therapy. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. Rubellite Tourmaline
Scott McQueen
In the fascinating world of gemstones, there are few stones that present such a persuasive erotic aura as does the rubellite tourmaline. From tender pink to shocking pink! From intense violet to a bold ruby red! The nuances of colors of rubellite tourmaline provide the wearer with a variety of looks that some have called “pure seduction”! Besides the exciting colors of rubellite tourmaline, there is another quality gemstone lovers appreciate…and that’s the consistency of their sparkle! A rubellite does not change its color because of differing light sources. A true rubellite shines as intensely in natural light as it does in artificial light. Nature has formed the rubellite in many colors so every woman can find one to suit her style and grandeur – but it’s not always that easy to do – especially if she is looking for two or more stones of the same color. However, the extravagance and the beauty of this gem will bring great pleasure to anyone who wears one…or two…or three! Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Rodent Woes Q: Late one night last week, my husband jumped up and said he’d seen a mouse scurry under one of the kitchen cabinets. I put a sticky trap down near the cabinet he mentioned, but haven’t caught a mouse yet. Any ideas? -- Sherry in Salem, N.H.

A: Mice can be pretty good at avoiding certain traps, which, as you’ve found, is pretty frustrating. And if your husband has seen one, there’s bound to be more -- especially at this time of year, as wild creatures begin to look for places to hunker down for the winter. If you have a professional pest-control service that visits routinely (twice per year, at least), be sure to mention the possible infestation. The serviceperson likely will put down more traps and ask you to call them if a mouse is caught. Meantime, look for signs of mouse infestation. You likely will find their droppings in areas of the kitchen where humans don’t spend a lot of time, such as the corners of lower kitchen cabinets. You may see gnawed-on areas of the lower walls, baseboards or cabinets, or the sawdust remainders of such gnawing. House mice also have a musky odor; if you notice this in a particular area of the house, a nest may be nearby. Sticky traps, or glue traps, are cost effective and quick to set up -- you simply peel back the plastic covering and set the trap face up against a wall in an area where mouse activity is indicated or has been noticed. You also can try the more traditional “snap trap,” which can stay in place longer and be reused. Set more traps than you think you’ll need, but make sure that they’re out of reach of pets and children. Bait traps with favorite mice items like a tiny bit of cheese or a dot of peanut butter. Another method is poisoned bait. This is sold in several forms, but one less accessible method is to purchase sealed pellets. These are poison pellets inside a sealed container that you place inside the wall or in a location pets can’t reach but mice can. The mice chew through the container to eat the pellet. To further reduce a mouse infestation, clean out cabinets that contain food items as well as your pantry. Inspect containers for evidence of gnawing or other access by mice, and discard affected containers. Place grains and flour in glass or foodgrade plastic containers. Store boxed items off the floor and away from known mice access points. Locate and seal holes in your home’s walls, exterior and interior, that are larger than 1/4 inch. For holes that can’t or should not be sealed (like soffit air vents), make sure that screens and similar barriers are in place and in good repair. HOME TIP: Have a large gap around a pipe or a hole that you don’t have time to seal up? Tuck a piece of steel wool into the gap and tack in place with a bit of caulk. Send your questions or comments to ask@thisisahammer. com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

PINCH OF SALT (continued): the place of Judas Iscariot, Jesus’ betrayer. The remedy for spilled salt is to toss a pinch over your left shoulder, which supposedly blinds the devil waiting there. Those who really want to be safe also crawl under the table and come out the opposite side. The Norwegians’ superstition about spilled salt says that a person will shed as many tears as necessary to dissolve the amount spilled, while superstitious Germans believe that spilling salt brings about hostility, the result of the devil disturbing peace. • Because fruits and vegetables are nearly salt-free, vegetarians are often at risk for dietary problems. The human body needs electrolytes to function, and without salt, it runs out of electrolytes. • The familiar cylindrical salt container with the metal spout was introduced by Morton in 1911. Prior to that, salt was packaged in large cumbersome bags, which, during wet weather, wouldn’t allow the pouring of salt. Morton’s slogan “When it rains, it pours” touted its moisture-proof container. In 1914, the company introduced its famous “umbrella girl” on packaging. When added to one tablespoon of lemon juice, it removes rust from scissors and other household tools. Just mix into a paste and rub on the rusty area. Salt also removes coffee stains from glass coffee pots. Mix 4 teaspoons of salt with a cup of crushed ice and a tablespoon of water and swirl it around in the pot. A handful of salt thrown into the flames in your fireplace helps loosen chimney soot. Are you troubled by weeds and grass growing up in your patio or sidewalk bricks and blocks? Spread salt in the cracks and sprinkle with water. You can remove the odor of fish from your hands by rubbing them with a lemon wedge dipped in salt. • Only about 6 percent of the world’s salt finds its way to the table. The de-icing of streets and highways eats up another 17 percent of the production. It’s also used in the leather tanning process; in the production of paper, soaps, detergents, cosmetics, paint products, batteries, glass, ceramics and adhesives; and as a refrigerant.

BRING THIS AD IN FOR A FREE DVD WITH NEW LOAN Ask the Dentist by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S. Master, Academy of General Dentistry So You Want a Piercing - To Pierce or Not to Pierce? Q. I’m thinking about piercing my tongue and wearing a tongue barbell. Will that hurt my tongue? A. Yes! Many problems can result from an oral piercing. It takes three to four weeks for an oral piercing to heal – if you’re lucky. Complications can occur during healing. Q. What kind of “complications”? A. Infections are common with oral piercings. Most of the bacteria that live in the mouth originate from the tongue. The tongue is heavily coated with bacteria and minute food particles. This is especially true if one does not brush or scrape his or her tongue as part of their routine oral hygiene. One’s own bacteria can cause infection of the tongue. If the “pierce-er” uses an unsterile needle or instrument on the “pierce-ee”, infection is practically guaranteed. Q. Won’t I just “get over” the infection in time?
A. Maybe…..maybe not: Any infection can become serious. According to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), an unsterile piercing needle can cause a serious, even life-threatening infection, such as HIV (AIDS) or Hepatitis. Swelling of the tongue is common after piercing. A serious bacterial infection of the floor of the mouth known as Ludwig’s Angina can develop. This infection can cause the floor of the mouth to swell rapidly. The swelling, can then become so large that it impairs swallowing and even constrict the airway. In some situations, to save the person’s life, emergency doctors have to pass a breathing tube through the patient’s nose to maintain the persons airway for breathing until the swelling and infection resolves. As soon as the needle passes through the tongue, bacteria enter the bloodstream. Under certain conditions, bacteria in the blood stream enter the heart and cause a serious, life-threatening heart infection, known as Endocarditis. Q. Is there anything else I need to know about oral piercing? A. Yes there is: Tongue piercing jewelry can get in the way of chewing and swallowing, and cause chipping and fractures of the teeth. Rubbing the barbell against the gums can cause the gums to recede, exposing the root surface to being weak and sensitive, and even tooth loss. Oral piercing can
also cause drooling, nerve damage, and taste loss. Is it any wonder these things are becoming known to dentists as oral wrecking balls? Q. Anything else? What’s the “bottom line”? A. Do you really need anything else? The bottom line is: Listen to your mother when she says:
“Don’t DO IT !” Remember: Keep Your Teeth and Gums Healthy for a Lifetime Tune in Next Week for: “Why Does is My Breath Stinky – and What Can I Do? Next week, we observe Labor Day, which honors all the hard-working men and women in the United States. As an investor, you’d like to think that all your investments are working hard, too — including the ones that are producing income. But can your income-oriented investments be productive when short-term interest rates are at historic lows? Or can you find other investment possibilities that could potentially boost your cash flow?
Cindy Rose
The answer to both these questions is “yes” — but you may have to take a closer look at where you stand on the risk-reward spectrum.
For example, you might need to consider longer-term income producers, which typically pay higher yields than shorter-term equivalents. Longer-term fixed-rate securities, such as bonds, must pay these higher rates to reward investors, who face both interest-rate risk — the possibility that interest rates will rise, causing the value of existing bonds to fall — and inflation risk, the threat of losing purchasing power by the time long-term bonds have matured. Still, you may be willing to accept these risks in exchange for the higher yields. However, you may be looking for income producers that can work hard for you without having to hold them for a long period to maturity. This is because the “yield curve” — the line that plots the relationship between yield and maturity — is fairly steep right now, which, in English, means you can gain noticeably higher yields just by modestly increasing the maturity of your investments. Your financial advisor can suggest some short-term and intermediate-term vehicles that may be appropriate for your needs. And while these rates will still not be as high as those offered by longer-term vehicles, they do offer flexibility — along with less interest-rate risk and inflation risk. You can also help protect yourself from these risks by building a “ladder” consisting of short-, intermediate- and longer-term bonds and certificates of deposit (CDs). Once you’ve built your ladder, it can help you weather changing interest-rate environments. When market rates are low, you’ll still have your longer-term bonds and CDs earning higher interest rates. And when market rates rise, you’ll be able to reinvest your maturing short-term investments at the higher levels. If you need the cash, you can liquidate the maturing bonds and CDs. Thus far, we’ve only looked at fixed-rate investments — but you may also be able to boost your income by owning dividend-paying stocks. Some companies have paid — and even increased — their stock dividends for many years in a row. If you’re not in need of the cash, you can reinvest the dividends and boost your ownership stake, which is a key to increasing your wealth. But if you do need the money, you can take the dividends as cash. Keep in mind that income producers are not a “sure thing” because companies can decide to reduce, or even discontinue, their dividends at any time. In addition, history tells us that you may experience more price volatility from stocks, and they can be worth more or less than the original investment when sold. As you can see, you can find ways to keep income-producing investments working hard for you, despite the prevailing low interest rates. So consider your options, weigh the risks — and then work with your financial advisor to make those choices that are right for you.
