“Happy Birthday to you!” says Tidbits to all those born in August, as we bring you some specifics about some of the more famous August babies. • U.S. Patent No. 4,136,359 was issued in January of 1979 to August baby Steve Wozniak for a “microcomputer for use with video display.” Wozniak had quit his job at Hewlett-Packard and along with Steve Jobs, formed Apple Computer in 1976. Within six years, Apple was on the prestigious Fortune 500 list. In 1981, Wozniak survived the crash of his Beechcraft Bonanza into a 12-foot embankment. He suffered from temporary amnesia as a result, with no remembrance whatsoever of the crash. • Don Ho gained fame for strumming his ukulele and singing “Tiny Bubbles,” but there was more to his life than the world of entertainment. Born of Chinese, Hawaiian, Portuguese, Dutch and German descent, he received a Bachelor of Art degree in sociology, then went on to serve with the U.S. Air Force as a fighter pilot. Exiting the military as a first lieutenant, he began singing in his parents’ Honolulu cocktail lounge and hit the charts with “Bubbles” in 1966. The LP containing the hit was in the Top 20 for nearly a year. turn the page for more!

AUGUST BABIES (continued): • Neil Armstrong, the first person to set foot on the moon, turns 81 this month. Before he was an astronaut, he served as a U.S. Navy pilot, flying 78 missions over Korea at the ripe old age of 21. After leaving the Navy at 22, he graduated from Purdue University with a degree in aeronautical engineering and became a test pilot. His first space mission was in 1966 on Gemini 8. The Apollo 11 mission landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. Armstrong’s first words upon the craft’s landing were, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” As he stood at the bottom of the ladder before his first step, he said, “I’m going to step off the LEM now.” Then came his legendary words as he set his foot on the lunar surface, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Along with fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Armstrong spent 2.5 hours exploring the moon. Shortly after the mission, he announced that he would not fly in space again and became a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

• The 7-foot, 1-inch-tall (2.2-m) Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain almost didn’t make it to the NBA. As a delicate child, he nearly lost his life to pneumonia and missed an entire year of school due to the illness. After his recovery, he didn’t care for basketball, but excelled in track and field. By the time he was 10 years old, he was already 6 feet (1.83 m) tall, and when he entered high school, he stood at 6 feet, 11 inches (2.1 m). Chamberlain played a year for the Harlem Globetrotters in 1958, with a $50,000 annual salary, before heading to Philadelphia with the NBA in 1959. In 1962, he set the long-standing record of scoring 100 points in a game, helping Philly triumph over the New York Knicks 169 to 147. When he retired, he had 31,419 career points. • If you haven’t read the work of American poet Katharine Lee Bates, you’ve certainly sung it. While visiting Colorado’s Pikes Peak in 1893, the 34-year-old professor of English at Wellesley College was so moved by the view, she wrote a poem entitled “America,” which was published two years later. A church organist and choirmaster, Samuel A. Ward, composed the music, and in 1910, it was released as “America the Beautiful.” • The words to another patriotic song were penned by an August baby, Francis Scott Key. During the War of 1812, as British troops invaded Washington, D.C., Key, the city’s 35-year-old district attorney, stood watching the attack on Fort McHenry in the midst of the Battle of Baltimore. After the smoke from the bombarding cleared, the American flag could be seen waving above the fort. On his way back to Baltimore after the battle, he began writing a poem on the back of a letter, words which would Continued on page 5

Well socialized cats were likely well socialized kittens. Kittens learn from their mother’s calm or fearful attitude toward humans. Although feeding times are important in forming the human/cat bond, it is also vital to include playing, grooming, and stroking to develop a kitten’s trust of humans. Kittens usually suckle until 8 weeks of age but they may continue to suckle longer on littermates, inanimate objects, and humans for comfort and security. Orphaned kittens or those weaned too soon are more likely to exhibit inappropriate suckling behaviors later in life. Ideally kittens need to stay with their littermates until 12 weeks of age. Many behavioral problems that domestic cats have can be traced back to early poor socialization problems. Kittens that fail to develop social skills usually have had an unstable kittenhood. Orphaning or early separation from mother and littermates has a profound effect in personality expression. Aggressive behavior, lack of litter box etiquette, inability to socialize with humans, and destructive behavior are a few unstable personality disorders that affect cats having a poor human/cat bond. Kittens that stay with mom and their littermates and that are handled daily during the first 7 weeks of life develop good social skills. Early positive nurturing leads to kittens that learn faster, are more curious and are more playful. The first two years in feline social development can be influenced by good experiences and positive human interaction. A loving home and stable lifestyle can change your cat’s behavior. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. He was born to a physician father and a physician mother, and his wife is also a doctor, as are nine other family members who are either MDs or Ph.Ds. After serving in the U.S. Air Force in the late 1940s, he became a country singer, moving into variety show television in 1957. He frequently sat in as substitute host of “The Tonight Show.” He moved to acting in the mid-1960s and appeared in the James Bond film, “Diamonds Are Forever.” He and his brother started up the sausage company in 1969, with Dean appearing in the TV commercials. They sold to the Sara Lee Corporation in the ‘80s, but Dean continued in the ads until the corporation dismissed him in 2004, claiming that the 76 year old was too old for the job. When he died in 2010, he was buried in a 9.5-foot-long (2.7-meter), pianoshaped granite mausoleum (a $350,000 item) on his estate on the banks of the James River.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

• Dick and Judy Hoyt were given disturbing news on the day their son Rick was born. The baby’s umbilical cord had tangled around his neck, blocking the flow of oxygen. This damaged his brain to the extent that it was unable to send messages to Rick’s muscles, with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. Doctors advised the Hoyts to place Rick in an institution, as he would always remain in a vegetative state. However, the Hoyts were encouraged by the fact that the baby’s eyes followed them when they moved and refused to give up on him. • As Rick grew, although he was confined to a wheelchair, his mother worked with him hours every day, teaching him the alphabet. At age 11, he received a special computer that enabled him to communicate, allowing him to attend public school. Rick received a degree in special education from Boston University at age 31 and went to work at Boston College’s computer lab, developing comContinued on page 7

CELEBRITY EXTRA

By Cindy Elavsky

PHOTO: Maria Bello Q: I am really digging the new TNT show, “Franklin and Bash.” Do you know if it’ll be back for a second season? -- Hank F., Baltimore Ryan Harris A: Well, Hank, if you’ve President & Founder got a hankering for a second season of “Franklin and Bash,” then I’ve got good news for you: TNT has picked up the hit legal drama for another season. MarkPaul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer will return as the titular characters to cause more waves at their buttondown agency. No word yet on many episodes will be in the new season or when it will premiere, but we’ll assume it’s summer 2012. The show also stars Malcolm McDowell, Dana Davis, Kumail Nanjiani, Reed Diamond and Garcelle Beauvais. *** Q: While I am excited to see that Maria Bello is starring in the new, American version of “Prime Suspect,” it got

me to thinking about the original British series. Can you tell me where I can see those episodes? -- Kathy D., via e-mail A: You’re in luck! On Aug. 23, Acorn Media will be releasing the first series of the police-procedural television drama (go to acornonline.com for more details). This series -- which aired in the 1990s and 2000s on Britain’s ITV network, for a total of 14 episodes -- garnered rave reviews and numerous accolades. Aside from starring the fabulous Helen Mirren, it also had big-name guest stars like Ralph Fiennes, Tom Wilkinson and David Thewlis. Director Tom Hooper, who won the Academy Award last year for “The King’s Speech,” also directed series six. Those are some mighty big shoes to fill for NBC -- which will air the U.S. version beginning Sept. 22-- but I have my fingers crossed for Maria Bello and crew to make “Prime Suspect” their own. *** Q: I am a huge fan of “White Collar” and have season one on DVD. When will seasons two and three be out? -- Rita S., Port Charlotte, Fla. A: The USA network show about a con man working with an FBI agent to catch criminals (as part of his work-release program from prison) recently returned for its third season in June, so you’ll have to wait a bit for those DVDs. However, you can now find season two at your favorite local and online retailers. The four-disc set includes all 16 episodes, deleted scenes, a gag reel, featurettes and commentaries for episodes nine, 12 and 16. *** Q: I am so glad that “The Glades” has returned, and I was wondering what else has series star Matt Passmore been in? He is my favorite actor on television right now. -- L.S., Granbury, Texas A: Prior to landing the lead role of Jim Longworth on A&E’s “The Glades,” Matt Passmore -- who was born in Brisbane, Australia, on Christmas Eve 1972 -worked on several TV shows and movies. You might have seen him in: “McLeod’s Daughter,” “Son of the Mask,” “Last Man Standing” or “The Cut.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

“Midgrade Beds Only”

Stroh Ranch Shopping Center Scott McQueen The precious and lovely demantoid is the most expensive kind of garnet on the market today. Gemstone lovers value it because of its rarity and its incredible luminosity, brilliance and fire; perhaps that’s why its name means “diamond-like”. Some gemstone lovers claim that a demantoid will continue to glow even in the shade. There is an explanation: the demantoid has a very high refraction – which means it splits the light which comes in through the facets and breaks it down in to a rainbow of colors. Some say it does this better than the diamond. Demantoid specimens come in several shades of green, with the rare deep emerald green being the most precious. Large demantoid are seldom found and always expensive. Most are very small, usually less than two carats and most barely exceeding one carat. Demantoid are found in Russia (the most sought after) and Namibia. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Fifteen-year-old Rick heard of a five-mile run slated to benefit a young lacrosse player paralyzed in an auto accident. Rick approached his dad about participating, and, although not a runner, 37-yearold Dick pushed his son the entire distance in his wheelchair, finishing second to last. After hearing Rick comment, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped,” Dick began running on a daily basis. When Rick was in school, Dick added a bag of cement to the wheelchair for his daily runs. • That first five-mile run was in 1977. By 2010, the pair had competed in more than 1,030 competitive events, including 68 marathons and six Ironman triathlons. The 2009 Boston Marathon marked their 1000th race and the 25th time they had completed that event. Dick Hoyt was 69 years old when he pushed Rick across the finish line! • The highlight of their athletic career came in 1992 when they spent 45 days running and biking coast to coast across the 3,735 miles (6,011 km) of the United States. • When competing in triathlons, for the swimming portion, Dick pulls his son in a custom-designed boat with a bungee cord attached to the waist of his vest for two and a half miles (3.86 km). During the cycling segment of the event, Rick rides in a special seat of a custom tandem bike for 112 miles (180.25 km), followed by the running, during which Dick pushes Rick in his wheelchair for 26.2 miles (42.2 km). • In 2010, Dick’s book “Devoted: The Story of a Father’s Love for his Son” was published, chronicling their family’s efforts to overcome the obstacles of having a child with disabilities. Dick likes to emphasize the fact that even with cerebral palsy, Rick has “accomplished things that would seriously challenge most people.”

What to do in case of a pet emergency? Brenda J. Francis, DVM As a pet owner and emergency veterinarian, I am often asked how to best be prepared for an emergency. The importance of recognizing the normal in order to be able to identify abnormal cannot be emphasized enough. Early recognition of a problem is the start to saving a pet’s life. If there are any questions regarding signs and symptoms that your pet is exhibiting you should always seek advise from a veterinarian.

Here are some steps you can take to prevent kitchen fires:

303-463-1800 www.obrienelectrical.com

Preparedness is the key. Having information readily available, such as your veterinarian’s phone number and clinic hours, may help to save time in case of an emergency. General practices will often provide the phone number and directions to the closest emergency clinic. It is recommended that these phone numbers be listed in your phone and the directions to the nearest emergency clinic be readily available. If leaving your pets with a caregiver, do discuss finances and plan ahead for the unexpected. Emergencies can occur with different types of trauma, as well as systemic illnesses. Any pet that is experiencing trouble breathing, choking, weakness, pale gums, cold extremities, abnormal heart rate, trouble urinating, or pets that are unwilling/unable to eat warrants a trip to the ER. When an emergency has been identified, it is most important to remain calm. It is also important to protect yourself when pets are sick or injured. These pets need to be handled with care, as they may be painful and disoriented. Consider muzzling to best protect your self from injury. Cats may need to be wrapped in a blanket/towel, or handled with gloves. Pets that have suffered a traumatic event, such as those that have been hit by an automobile or bitten by other dogs, snakes or insects, should be seen by a veterinarian right away, as internal bleeding and other secondary complications can often go unrecognized initially. Over-the-counter medications can pose further illness in pets and therefore are never recommended especially in the case of an emergency or without the consent of your veterinarian. Heatstroke should be considered an emergency, especially when pets are left in cars, tied outside without access to shade and water, or have been over-exercised in the heat. There are medical conditions that may also cause some dogs to overheat more quickly. Heatstroke can lead to death if not treated appropriately. Toxin ingestion is common. Symptoms that may be observed include vomiting, drooling, tremors or trouble walking. If the poison container/label is available, do bring this to the veterinarian to help determine the appropriate treatment protocol. Pet emergencies are often unavoidable. There are some basic things that we can do as responsible pet owners to try to decrease the chance. Spaying/ neutering your pets early can help prevent possible traumas, unwanted pregnancies and/or some cancers. The use of a leash to prevent unexpected and potentially tragic consequences can also greatly decrease the chance that your pet will require a visit to the animal emergency room. Ryan Harris

GAS

Of Douglas County Colorado

• Don’t leave cooking food unattended and stay awake • Always remain present when using the stove top, oven and microwave • Avoid wearing loose clothing while cooking • Turn pot handles inward and keep lids handy in case needed • Smother grease fires- DON’T pour water on a grease fire (It’ll cause the fire to flare) • Turn off burner, and carefully cover the pan with a lid • Remove burning pan from stove carefully • Always protect skin and hair from flames • Turn off hood fans so fire does not spread to ducts (and other areas of the home) • Keep stove tops and ovens clean • Keep flammable objects away from the stove • Dishtowels, potholders and curtains should be at least 3 feet away from the stove

MOST IMPORTANTLY, DO NOT PANIC. If the fire is not put out quickly, call the Fire Department immediately! We know you’re not an insurance professional and that’s OK! Email us at Davidlowry@allstate.com with any questions or topics that you would like discussed.

Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Don't Let Low Rates Sink Your Retirement Plans Over the past few years, if you’ve taken out a mortgage or another consumer loan, you’ve probably welcomed the low interest rates you may have received. But as an Cindy Rose investor, if you’ve kept any retirement savings in fixed-rate investment vehicles, you may have seen low rates in a less favorable light. And that’s why it may be time for you take a closer look at your financial strategy for working toward the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Of course, you can always hope that interest rates will rise, and perhaps they will. As you may know, the Federal Reserve has kept interest rates at record lows in recent years to stimulate lending and thereby boost the economy. But rates can’t get much lower, and if inflation were to heat up, the Fed could reverse course by starting to raise rates. However, if you’re going to do a good job of building financial assets for retirement, you really can’t afford to play “wait-and-see” with interest rates. Instead, consider the following moves: Rebalance your portfolio. No matter what your situation, it’s a good idea to periodically rebalance your investment portfolio to help ensure it still reflects your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals. If you’re concerned about low rates harming your future investment income, you have more reason than ever to review your portfolio and make adjustments as needed, relative to your objectives. For example, if it seems that your portfolio has become “overweighted” in any one vehicle, you may need to change your investment mix, keeping in mind your individual risk tolerance. Redefine “retirement.” Retiring from one career doesn’t have to mean retiring from work altogether. If you decide to work part time, do some consulting or even open your own small business, you may be able to earn enough income to take some of the “pressure” off your investment portfolio in terms of providing you with the money you need to live on during retirement. Also, by working during your nominal retirement years, you may be able to delay taking Social Security until you’re a little older, when your monthly checks can be larger. Review your withdrawal strategy. During your retirement, the amount you choose to withdraw from your investments each year will depend on several factors, including the size of your portfolio and the amount of income it is providing. As you chart your retirement strategy, you’ll need to factor in a realistic withdrawal rate. Re-examine sources of investment income. You may want part of your retirement income to come from investments that offer protection of principal. If so, you don’t have to settle for the lowest-rate vehicles. By looking at the various alternatives and blending them with your overall portfolio, you may be able to boost your income without significantly increasing your investment risk. In short, just because interest rates are low, you don’t have to lower your retirement expectations — as long as you plan ahead and explore your options. The Steering Wheel of Life! In the book of James he says this, James 3:2 (AMP) We all often stumble and fall and offend in many things. And if anyone does not offend in speech [never says the wrong things], he is a fully developed character and a perfect man, able to control his whole body and to curb his entire nature. What a statement! Is it really true that we can control our whole body by what comes out of our mouth? Well if you believe the scripture then the answer is yes. He goes on to say that just like a bit in the mouth of a horse, just like the tiny rudder on a huge ship, our tongue can control where we go. I think if James were writing to us today he would say like the steering wheel of a car, your tongue determines the direction of your life. Most of us do not realize that words are not just for the purpose of conveying what you need, what you think, or what you feel…words are designed for us to create, for us to produce. You and I were created in the image and in the likeness of God himself. And God is a Spirit and so are we! In fact God has made us speaking spirits, like himself, that have the ability to create and to produce with our words. The scripture confirms that statement. Proverbs 18:20-21 (AMP) A man’s [moral] self shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; and with the consequence of his words he must be satisfied [whether good or evil]. 21Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life]. With your words you can remark about something or…you can remake! You can comment…or you can create! God has never spoken any idle, inactive word, everything He says, 100% comes to pass. And you and I are warned about using idle words in our life. An idle word is a word that is lazy, that does nothing to produce. We need to begin to be conscious of putting our words to work, to stop saying a bunch of lazy, idle, non-productive words. Words that are hurting us or words that are just empty, either way, we need to turn it around! Stop saying things that are hurting your life, stop saying things that are detrimental to your life and begin to put your words to work on your behalf! Part of this equation is that you have to believe that what you speak will come to pass. And how do you believe, how does faith come in your life? Well faith comes by hearing and hearing by the anointed Word of God. (Rom. 10:17) That is why it is so important for us to read our Bibles daily, for us to be in church weekly, and to surround ourselves with people of like faith that can help us and encourage us in our walk with Him! Find a good church and become a part of it this week!

How to Sell Your House Fast-At the Price You Want! How a Note Finder Helps It All Happen For You There is a growing group of note business professionals known as “Note Finders” who are making it easier than ever to sell real estate notes. These folks are individuals who help Note Sellers find a buyer. Also known as cash flow specialists or note liquidators, Note Finders collect and organize information about potential note sales so that people who buy notes can easily determine if the stream of income is right for them. Note Finders serve to inform Note Holders of their options. They also help to streamline the process of selling a cash flow by helping Note Holders to understand the process. Note Finders know Dr. Steven Nack what types of note terms, interest rates, down payments, and payment schedules Note Buyers prefer, and are familiar with typical yield notes. Therefore, an experienced finder can give home owners pertinent information to structure a new note so that it sells quickly. As a Note Finder, I have an in-depth understanding of the private note industry and I am able to approximate the value of most secured cash flows. Keep in mind that Note Finders do not act on the behalf of either the Note Holder or the buyer and do not provide counsel to either party; we represent ourselves. I can give you an idea of what makes a note attractive to buyers as well as present information about a note to potential buyers, but will not assist either party with the decision to finalize a note deal.
