PARKER’S OLDEST
• “Where the Wild Things Are” began with something else in the place of “Things.” Maurice Sendak, a young storybook artist, originally wrote a children’s story called “Where the Wild Horses Are.” The only problem with this title was he couldn’t draw horses. In 1963, Sendak changed “Horses” to “Things” in favor of monsters. He based these monsters on his scary Brooklyn relatives that he didn’t like as a child.

How do authors come up with the ideas for their books? Here’s a fun look at a few popular children’s classics and how they were conceived.
• Sendak said of those relatives, “I remember how inept they were at making small talk with children. There you’d be, totally helpless, while they cooed over you and pinched your cheeks. Or they’d lean way over with their bad teeth and hairy noses, and say something threatening like, ‘You’re so cute I could eat you up.’ And I knew if my mother didn’t hurry up with the cooking, they probably would.”

A STORY IS BORN (continued): • In 1940, Rey and his wife fled from the Nazi invasion of Paris. They were caught escaping on their bicycles and arrested as spies. An officer searching their belongings found the unpublished manuscript of “Curious George,” and after reading it, he let the Rey’s go, saying no spy could write such a wonderful story. • A.A. Milne gave his son Christopher Robin a stuffed bear for his first birthday in 1921. He named the bear Winnie the Pooh after Winnie, a real bear at the London Zoo. As his son grew up, Milne made up bedtime stories about adventures his son had with his Teddy Bear. A friend and editor of a children’s magazine thought they were so charming, he suggested publishing them. “Winnie-the-Pooh” was published in 1926. • E.B. White based “Charlotte’s Web” on his own experiences at his farm in Maine. White said, “One day when I was on my way to feed the pig, I began feeling sorry for the animal because, like most pigs, he was doomed to die. This made me sad. So I started thinking of ways to save a pig’s life. In the barn I had been watching a big, gray spider at her work and was impressed by how clever she was weaving her web. Gradually I worked the spider into the story, a story of friendship and salvation on the farm.”

• In 1939, Ludwig Bemelman wrote the first “Madeline” book in Pete’s Tavern in New York City using the backs of the tavern’s menus as writing paper. The story was based on his mother’s life as a young girl in Bavaria and his memories as the smallest boy in boarding school. He named the main character after his wife Madeline. • In 1941, during lunch with a publisher in New York, a famous French Air Force pilot and author named Antoine de Saint-Exupery doodled a picture of a little boy on a napkin. “Who’s that?” the publisher asked. “Oh,” Saint-Exupery reportedly replied, “just a little fellow I carry around in my heart.” The publisher suggested Saint-Exupery write a book about the character. “The Little Prince” was published in 1943, one year before Saint-Exupery’s death. • While attending Dartmouth College from 1921 to 1925, Theodor Suise Geisel became editor-inchief of the Jack-O-Lantern, Dartmouth’s humor magazine. He got into a bit of trouble when he and his friends were caught throwing a drinking party, which was against prohibition laws and school policy. He was banned from all extracurricular activities, including the magazine, so he began signing his work with the pen name “Seuss.” He got the idea for his first published book, “And To Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street” while on a ship. Cat Q & A
Is Your Cat Protected? FELINE LEUKEMIA VIRUS (FeLV) – Feline leukemia virus adversely affects the cat’s body in many ways. It is the most common cause of cancer in cats, it may cause various blood disorders and it may lead to a state of immune deficiency that hinders the cat’s ability to protect itself against other infections

You can protect your “best friend” - We offer an accurate and fast screening test for feline leukemia. We recommend outdoor cats with a negative test result be routinely vaccinated and retested annually for this deadly disease. Domestic barn cats use their claws to catch prey, climb to escape predators, protect and develop breeding territories and calm an itch. The evolution of this highly developed tool/ weapon is one of keys to the domestic cat’s survival and why felines became working partners with their owners and more. Most great societies of the world elevated the cat to almost worship status. Even in America, one of the most successful Broadway plays of all time was CATS! In China, there is a cat karma saying “if you don’t like cats, you must have been a rat in your former life.” Cats are the number one companion animal in this country – Meow! As a weapon to protect territory or to catch prey the feline claw apparatus has no equal. Cats hone their claws to a sharp tool by scratching. This provides great needed exercise, is a pleasurable, and provides the cat with defensive skills. Free living cats thrive with scratching. The modern indoor feline has encountered some major problems scratching furniture and scratching play with their owners. This type of behavior is natural for the feline but the modern cat owner is not aware why this inconvenient, destructive habit exists. Because of the lack of understanding, cats are given up to humane societies and most are euthanized for this ‘bad’ behavioral problems. Sad! Are there ways to help your cat co-exist in your house? 1. The need for scratching is instinctual and good exercise – scratching is normal! 2. Train your cat to use a scratching post(s). 3. Get your cat some ‘cat furniture’ that is OK to be the cat’s very own. 4. Play with your cat because boredom is a common cause of increased scratching. 5. Trim you cat’s nails every two weeks – decreases damage and is healthy for the cat. 6. Try Soft Paws – glued-on guards that don’t injure furniture. 7. And if all else fails – quality declaw surgery. This last resort may save your cat’s life.

A STORY IS BORN (continued): boat’s engines. The phrase he kept repeating was, “And to think that I saw it on Mulberry Street,” which became the foundation of a tale about a young boy who imagines a parade that grows more and more outrageous. • While on a boat trip up the River Thames in London, Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was accompanied by three young daughters of his friend Henry Liddell. He entertained the girls with a story about a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure. • The girls loved the story and one of them, Alice Liddell, asked Dodgson to write it down for her. For Christmas in 1864 he gave Alice a handwritten copy of the manuscript entitled “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground,” dedicating it as “a Christmas gift to a dear child in memory of a summer’s day.” The book was published in 1865. • In 1990, while on a crowded train from Manchester to London, the idea for Harry Potter suddenly “fell into her head,” says author Joanne Kathleen Rowling. Rowling sent her manuscript “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” to several prospective agents in 1995. After eight rejections by publishers, an offer came in but with one suggestion — that she change her pen name to a more gender-neutral name to address the fear that males in the targeted age group wouldn’t be interested in reading a novel written by a woman. She agreed and decided to use J. K. Rowling instead. • No one author is known to have written the story of Cinderella. Many versions of the folk tale have been shared for thousands of years throughout the world. The oldest recorded Cinderella story dates back to first century B.C. in ancient Greece. The tale is of a “rosy-cheeked” girl, who lived in the Greek colony of Naucratis in ancient Egypt. No matter how the story is told, the main character is always a young woman living in unfortunate circumstances that are suddenly changed to remarkable fortune. The theme remains constant — overcoming unjust oppression to find triumph and reward.

The Gem Advisor Yellow Tourmaline
Scott McQueen Brazil gave the world Paraiba tourmalines – Malawi has brought us yellow tourmalines. New to the gemstone world, yellow (canary) tourmalines were discovered in this century – the year 2000. The cheerful sunny yellow does not always come out without some effort. Some of the stones must first be placed in a 700 degree Celsius oven for a period of time or else remain with a slight brownish tinge. The heat treatment transforms the light brown into the more popular joyful yellow. And here is something you don’t often hear about a gemstone – it’s odor. Yellow tourmalines have a pleasurable odor noticeable only to the cutter. Experienced cutters like to cut yellow tourmalines because they claim they are the only gemstones that smell good! Why do they smell? Because the owner of the gemstone mine in Malawi discovered that the unwanted black material surrounding the crystals was removed easier if the raw crystals were boiled in water that had lemon juice added in. The wearer, however, cannot discern an odor of any kind. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver ¥ It was 20th-century American humorist Evan Esar who made the following extremely sage observation: ÒAnger is the feeling that makes your mouth work faster than your mind.Ó ¥ The Ghirardelli company, now renowned worldwide for the fine chocolate it produces, originally was a purveyor of mustard and spices. ¥ Frank Lloyd Wright was an unusually prolific architect. During the 70 years of his professional career, he designed a whopping 500 buildings. ¥ Unless youÕre employed in the publishing field, you might think that a typographical error is rather insignificant, something that only nitpickers worry about. Typos, however, sometimes radically change the meaning of text. Take, for example, the 1631 edition of the Bible published by the royal printers in London. A word was left out of one of the Ten Commandments, resulting in the exhortation, ÒThou shalt commit adultery.Ó This book is now known as the Wicked Bible or the Adulterous Bible. Robert Barker and Martin Lucas, the publishers responsible for the error, were fined 300 British pounds, or about $54,000 in todayÕs currency. ¥ In 1826, the eastern part of Texas declared its independence from the United States, calling itself the Republic of Fredonia. ¥ You might be surprised to learn that author Norman Mailer, best known for his novel ÒThe Naked and the Dead,Ó majored in aeronautical engineering when he was in college. ¥ If youÕre an arachnophobe, you may not want to read the following tidbit: There are some species of spider that dine on fish -- and catch them, too. ¥ For reasons surpassing understanding, in 1845, the city of Boston made it mandatory to have a doctorÕs prescription before taking a bath.

Kids and Dental Information How do I prepare my child and myself for the first visit? Before the visit, ask the dentist what procedures will be performed so there are no surprises. Plan a course of action to manage your child’s reaction to the visit. Talk to your child about what to expect and
build excitement as well as understanding about the upcoming visit. Be positive! When will my child lose his/her baby teeth? Children will begin losing their teeth at approximately age 5-6. They will usually lose their front teeth first. Children will continue to lose baby teeth until age 12 or 13 when all the permanent teeth finally erupt. Wisdom teeth may erupt during the late teenage years – or may remain impacted (unerupted) and need to be removed. Why is it important to fix baby teeth that have decay? Baby teeth hold space for the future eruption of permanent teeth. If a baby tooth decays or is removed too early, the space necessary for the permanent tooth

Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Be Aware of Key Benefits of Life Insurance
Cindy Rose
You may be unaware of it, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And while a whole month may seem like a long time to focus on life insurance, it’s actually a good opportunity for you to realize the important role that life insurance can play in your life.

Unfortunately, many people don’t have sufficient insurance. A recent report by LIMRA, a research and consulting group, shows the following: Individual life insurance ownership among U.S. households has reached a 50-year low. Three out of every 10 households (about 35 million households) currently have no life insurance — an increase of 11 million households since 2004. These figures help explain why the nonprofit LIFE Foundation coordinates Life Insurance Awareness Month each September. Simply put, many people don’t realize how many ways that life insurance can help them and their families. To be specific, life insurance can: Educate your children — If you were to die prematurely, your life insurance policy can pay, in whole or in part, your children’s college education. And if you live a normal life span, life insurance can help to pay for your grandchildren’s college education. Pay off your mortgage — If you have sufficient life insurance, the death benefit can pay off your mortgage, so your family wouldn’t have to move. Help pay for your spouse’s retirement — Your spouse might be counting on sharing some of the money you eventually withdraw from your retirement plans — such as your 401(k) and IRA — to help with his or her own retirement. If you were to die early, your spouse, as beneficiary, would receive the existing account balances in these plans, but your future contributions would, of course, die with you. Help pay for your retirement — You don’t even have to die to reap some benefits from your life insurance. If you’ve purchased some form of permanent insurance, such as whole life or universal life, you have the opportunity to build a cash balance. And through policy loans or withdrawals, you can tap into this cash to help you pay some of your expenses during retirement. Help you leave the legacy you desire — Life insurance can be an important part of your estate plans. To use life insurance properly for estate planning, consult with your legal advisor. Of course, one big question that you may ask is this: How much life insurance do I need? You’ve probably seen those estimates that say you should have insurance that’s worth a certain number of years times your annual income. While this might not be a bad estimate, it’s not a hard-and-fast rule for every single individual. The amount of insurance you need will depend on a variety of factors: your age, income, size of family, value of home, employment situation and so on. Your financial advisor can help you determine the level of insurance that’s appropriate for your needs. Now that you’ve seen how life insurance may help you over the years, and you’ve got a sense of how to determine the amount of coverage you need, you can appreciate the message behind Life Insurance Awareness Month — so take it to heart and make sure you’ve got the proper insurance plan in place.

Winter is Coming! Winter weather often takes a backseat to other forms of destructive weather, but according to the Insurance Information Institute, winter storms are the third-largest cause of catastrophe losses, resulting in about $1 billion in insured losses annually. Every year, water damage from burst or frozen pipes, roof collapses from heavy snow, fires from space heaters, and other winterrelated damage plague property owners around the country with costly results.
Living in the Light!
Ryan Harris
1 John 1:5-9 (NLT) says,5 This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. 6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. As a believer you cannot walk in darkness, walk in untruth and still have fellowship with the Father. If something has any darkness in it, even a miniscule part, God is not in it. In fact, my favorite definition of sin is that sin is a violation of light. Now in our society, we see it adjusting and compromising all the time, adjusting to what the majority thinks or feels is right or ok but God is not like that, in fact God does not change, at all, ever! God is light and even if some new thing shows up that the world thinks it the latest and the greatest, God never lowers His standard for it to be acceptable in His eyes. God is light and in Him is no darkness at all, that means there is no compromise in Him, there is no change in Him, He is always light! What he is saying here, if you have any kind of issue with darkness, any kind of bondage, any kind of stronghold, any kind of habit, any kind of habitual sin no matter what it is…. then bring it to the light, bring it to God, because He is light! If you have an issue with sin, don’t keep it covered up bring it to the light. See the devil’s power that he obtains over a person, is to shame them, and belittle them to the point where they think if anyone knew I had this problem, they would think badly of me. So for goodness sakes, don’t let anyone know you struggle with this or struggle with that, after all I’m a Christian and I am not supposed to struggle in this area. And so we hide it, we cover it up, we pretend it is not there, we pretend that it is not an issue in our life. But the Word tells us here, not to hide it, don’t deny it, don’t hide it, don’t try and cover it up, bring it to the light. Bring it to the light of God, let the light of God shine on it, so you can have fellowship with the Father. John 8:36 (KJV) 36If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Join us for Inspiring Messages and a Loving Children’s Program Sunday mornings – 10 a.m.
It starts at the top: Ice dams form when heat from the attic melts the snow on the roof where it refreezes on the edges and prevents roofs from draining properly. Make sure the attic is well ventilated to ensure the roof stays cool. Also, check the ceiling insulation to keep heat from escaping into the attic. At ground level, remember to keep walk ways and driveways shoveled and salted to prevent accidents.
•
Don’t refrain from the drain: Proper drainage is essential to cycling precipitation off of the roof. Remember that leaves often build up during the fall. Clear any debris from drains and make sure gutters are clean and stable. Keep an eye on window wells and walls, and remove any snow buildup.
•
Pipe down: Bursting pipes cause millions of dollars worth of property damage every winter. Insulate all accessible pipes, and when temperatures dip near freezing, drip all faucets to prevent ice buildup. Also, install protective covers on exterior faucets. Avoid turning off your thermostat when the property is unattended, keeping the temperature warm enough to prevent freezing. Inspect the external walls of your property for cracks or holes, and fill them with caulk or insulation to keep cold air out.
•
Some like it hot: Many people turn to space heaters during the colder months of the year. If you’re in the market for a space heater, make sure it has been tested by the Underwriters’ Laboratories and check its list of features to confirm that it has an automatic shut-off function and heat element guards. If you already own a space heater, inspect the cords for fraying or cracks and never run the cord under rugs or carpeting. Carbon monoxide detectors in every room are crucial if you choose to use a liquid-fueled heater.

In addition, special care and caution is recommended for chimneys and winter heating fuel oil tanks. Chimneys should be inspected and cleaned regularly and kept clear of branches. Only wood seasoned for six months to a year should be used (never burn your Christmas tree or treated wood in the fireplace). Heating oil storage tanks also should be inspected and kept clear of undergrowth and debris. Pipes should be positioned to avoid ice, snow or water buildup. The aftermath of many winter storms all too frequently puts a sharp dent in many property owners’ wallets, as unexpected out-of-pocket expenses arise. Homeowners should check their deductibles at policy renewal time so that they are aware of any changes in out-of-pocket expenses.
