TIDBITS® IS CHEWING THE FAT WITH

IDIOMS

by Patricia L. Cook

This Tidbits delves into idioms. An idiom is “a group of words whose meaning cannot be predicted from the meanings of the constituent words.” In other words, they really don’t make sense! • If you live in the rainy Pacific Northwest, the steamy Southern states or a rain forest, you have probably heard the idiom “It was raining cats and dogs.” The origin of the phrase is unknown. One theory is that in olden days in England, dogs and cats would sleep on the thatch or hay roofs of houses. When it rained, the roofs became slippery and the animals would slide off. Hence, it was “raining cats and dogs!”

• On the other hand, if you are sitting in a theater, you may be in the “peanut gallery.” This term was popularized in the late 19th century and referred to seats located in the balcony of the theater, the “cheap” seats. People in these seats would sometimes throw peanuts, common theater food of the time, on those seated below. The term was also used for those seated in the first row on the floor seats where the patrons could throw peanuts on stage if they weren’t pleased with the performance.

• The best cuts of pork were usually consumed at the time of butchering. The other cuts were salt cured for preservation to be eaten during the winter. When spring arrived, people were “scraping the bottom of the barrel” looking for any scraps remaining. The term is now used to refer to the last food in the pantry, money in the budget, last one chosen for a team, etc. • Another term for the wealthy is the “upper crust.” This term comes from England, where the smell of bread wafted from the kitchens of country estates. The upper crust was the superior un-burnt part of a loaf that was served to the “gentry” or high society. • In Biblical times, the “upper crust,” or upper class, was offered the “fat of the land.” This meant the fattest and best livestock. • Another familiar expression with origins in the Bible is “salt of the earth.” Salt was not only expensive, it was also a vital preservative. People referred to as the “salt of the earth” were and are very precious. • Again thinking of the precious commodity of salt, a compliment that someone is “worth his salt” means he is doing a good job and is a valuable worker. Salt was so valuable in ancient days that Roman soldiers were sometimes paid with salt instead of or in addition to coins or currency.

• In stark contrast to a good worker stands one who isn’t. A sorry or less-than-stellar worker may get “canned” or “sacked.” This terminology came from coal miners who were given a chit, a “statement of an amount owed for food and drink,” which they could use at the company store. When let go, their severance pay was a can of food usually put in a sack. • Just as a bad worker can affect the attitudes of his co-workers, a “bad apple” can ruin a whole bag or box of apples. This term has been used with all kinds of produce and people as well. You don’t want to be the “bad apple” in the crowd! • If you find yourself in the unsavory position of being the person viewed as the “bad apple,” you may find yourself “eating humble pie.” This saying came about in a circuitous way. In the 14th century, the heart, liver, entrails, etc. of animals were called the “numbles” (noumbles, nomblys, noubles). In the 15th century, they were called “umbles.” The umbles were used as an ingredient in pies. Only lower class folks ate “humble pie.” Hence, abasing or lowering oneself was seen as taking oneself to a lower class. Continued on page 7

Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc

Understanding Your Cat – Part 2 Feline Aggression takes many forms and can be very subtle to very violent. The “stare” with ears pasted back, large dilated pupils, enlarged posture can send a message stronger than physical contact. Staring down another cat or a large dog is often all that it takes to control an awkward social situation. The “stare” is commonly used by a cat guarding the litter box – an aggressive gesture that many times causes urinating outside the litter box issues. In multiple cat households there may be a ‘guard cat’ that dominates access to a favorite litter box by visual positioning to stare down another cat needing to use the facilities. When that access is blocked using another litter box (Vacant) is the next best step. Having multiple boxes (one more box than the number of cats, usually solves the problem). If an alternate litter box is not available then house-soiling is the next option. Cats are passive-aggressive in a subtle way whereby no actual physical aggression needs to happen. Posturing, body and eye language and where the cats interact in the household may be the determining factor how each cat will react. The dominant aggressor cat many times is the less vocal cat whereas the less dominant victim cat may have loud protestations that are defensive in nature. The quiet cat is generally the sneaky culprit in the confrontation.

When cats interact in a violent fashion trying to step in between to stop the fight can be dangerous to your well-being. Excited, ‘adrenalin crazed’ cats can turn their aggression for the other cat to you. Startling the cats from a distance is much safer and shifts their attention to a neutral stimulus thus stopping the fight. Putting a large pillow or cardboard between the fighting cats will stop the fight. If the cats cannot see each other, their tempers cool off and the fight usually ends. Putting the ‘bad’ dominant cat in ‘timeout’ in another room may decrease the urge to fight but this may take months of retraining. ‘Mad’ cats with intense anger may take over six months to lose this aggressive tendency. Pheromone sprays and collars, anti-anxiety medications and retraining can help in the mild to moderate aggressive behaviors. Some cats never get along and re-homing or finding a benign barn home may be the only option. To be continued – Part 2 of 4

Scott McQueen Brazil gave the world Paraiba tourmalines – Malawi has brought us yellow tourmalines. New to the gemstone world, yellow (canary) tourmalines were discovered in this century – the year 2000. The cheerful sunny yellow does not always come out without some effort. Some of the stones must first be placed in a 700 degree Celsius oven for a period of time or else remain with a slight brownish tinge. The heat treatment transforms the light brown into the more popular joyful yellow. And here is something you don’t often hear about a gemstone – it’s odor. Yellow tourmalines have a pleasurable odor noticeable only to the cutter. Experienced cutters like to cut yellow tourmalines because they claim they are the only gemstones that smell good! Why do they smell? Because the owner of the gemstone mine in Malawi discovered that the unwanted black material surrounding the crystals was removed easier if the raw crystals were boiled in water that had lemon juice added in. The wearer, however, cannot discern an odor of any kind. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

Seamless Gutters & Downspouts

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Overseed Lawn Now for Spring Growth Q: I have some brown and bare patches in my yard. My neighbor recommended that I thatch my entire yard, or at least the brown patches, then put some fertilizer and “overseed” the damaged areas. What kind of fertilizer is he talking about? And why seed the lawn now, when winter is coming? -- Fred D., Madison, Wis. A: Overseeding lawns can be helpful in filling in scrawny or thin areas. The idea is to overseed shortly before the first hard frost. The seeds will germinate and establish roots, which will both help the lawn come in more lush and green in the spring, as well as reduce competition from invasive weeds. However, it’s important to know what kind of grass makes up your lawn, in order to pick the right kind of

seed for the job, as well as the correct type and amount of fertilizer. I’d recommend cutting a small patch of grass (including roots) and taking it to your local nursery or the lawn and garden center of your homeimprovement store. While you’re getting your grass identified, ask about possible causes of the brown and bare areas. There may be a problem with air, water or light reaching those areas. Improper or excessive fertilization could be occurring. Or maybe there’s too much water in those areas due to a drainage problem. Identifying the actual cause of the brown and bare spots, and then eliminating that cause, will prevent it from coming back once you’ve repaired those areas.

Once the bare and brown spots are addressed, overseeding (and reseeding bare areas) can take place. For small lawns, a handheld spreader is inexpensive and spreads seeds evenly. For larger lawns, a rotary spreader works best. HOME TIP: Prior to overseeding, mow your lawn to less than 2 inches in height if possible and collect the grass clippings so seeds can reach the soil. IDIOMS (continued): • Bakers in Europe were not usually baking “humble pie” but pastries, cookies, rolls and other fine treats. Because they could receive stiff punishment for shorting customers, bakers would usually put 13 or more pieces in their orders just to be sure. This is where the “baker’s dozen” originated. • British sailors on war ships in the 1700s might have appreciated some “humble pie” or a generous “baker’s dozen.” Their ships did not have the best living conditions. Usually, a sailor’s breakfast and lunch was only bread and a beverage. The third meal of the day included meat and was presented on a square tray. Hence the term “square meal” was coined to identify the most substantial meal of the day.

DINE IN SPECIAL

• A popular topping for pizza, “Canadian bacon” has hog geography behind its name. It doesn’t have anything to do with the country of Canada other than its location relative to the United States. Traditional bacon is cut from the underbelly or south side of the pig. Canadian bacon is cut from the loin area, the upper part of the pig. Since it is from the north — Oh, Canada!

48 oz. Pitcher of Bud or 4 Sodas with purchase of an 18” Pizza

• In England, it is customary to extend hospitality to visitors, even complete strangers. However, when the host chose to serve a “cold shoulder” of beef, it signaled that it was time for the guests to move on. Think about this the next time you snub someone or give them the “cold shoulder.”

• When wood stoves were used to cook beef shoulders and more, cooks used the front burners for intense heat and for stoking the fire to avoid a reach across the hot stove top. When it was time to slow down or simmer the food, it was put on the “back burner.” Now that term is used for putting something on hold, such as a chore you need, but don’t want, to do.

Raise Your "Awareness" of Benefits of Life Insurance

You may be unaware of it, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And when you consider the lifetime of benefits you and your family may receive from life insurance, you might agree that a month isn’t too long to spend on this important part of your overall financial picture.

The cost — financial, emotional and psychological — of not having adequate life insurance certainly outweighs the expense of carrying the proper coverage. You’ll hear about many things that are designed to “last a lifetime,” but in the case of life insurance, that expression is appropriate. Consider the various times in which you should look at the need for life insurance:

Unfortunately, too many Americans are uninsured or under-insured. In fact, nearly a third of all consumers think they need more life insurance, according Cindy Rose to the 2012 Insurance Barometer Study, published by the nonprofit LIFE Foundation and LIMRA, a research and consulting organization that specializes in insurance and financial services. And it appears that one of the main reasons so many people lack sufficient life insurance is their perception that they can’t afford it. Yet, the cost for basic term life insurance has fallen by about 50 percent over the past 10 years, according to the LIFE Foundation.

¥ On Oct. 6, 1847, “Jane Eyre,” a book about the struggles of an orphan girl who grows up to become a governess, is published. Charlotte Bronte, the book’s author, wrote of her experiences at being sent to a boarding school at the age of 5. ¥ On Oct. 1, 1920, Scientific American magazine reports that the rapidly developing medium of radio soon would be used to broadcast music: “Experimental concerts are at present being conducted every Friday evening from 8:30 to 11:00 by the Radio Laboratory of the Bureau of Standards.” ¥ On Oct. 5, 1930, a British dirigible crashes in Beauvais, France, killing all 56 people aboard. The R-101, Great Britain’s biggest blimp, was flying only 250 feet above the ground, unbeknownst to the pilots because of the dark night. The blimp skimmed treetops before hitting a ridge, igniting the hydrogen supply. ¥ On Oct. 4, 1944, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower distributes to his combat units a report by the U.S. Surgeon General that reveals the hazards of prolonged exposure to combat. Based on this evaluation, American commanders judged that the average soldier could last about 200 days in combat before suffering serious psychiatric damage. ¥ On Oct. 2, 1968, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson strikes out 17 Detroit Tigers in the first game of the World Series, breaking Sandy Koufax’s record for the most strikeouts in a Series game. ¥ On Oct. 7, 1975, a New York State Supreme Court judge reverses a deportation order for John Lennon, allowing him to remain legally in the U.S. The judge wrote that “The courts will not condone selective deportation based upon secret political grounds.” An FBI investigation of Lennon had turned up no evidence of involvement in illegal activities. ¥ On Oct. 3, 1995, Heisman Trophy winner O.J. ing custom clubs made for me and are they more expensive? If you are a male 5'9 or 5'10 all the clubs in the big boxstores are made for you. Same if you are a 5'4 female. These are the standards that have been in place since the 1960s.If you are taller or shorter than these standards you have to change your swing to fit the clubs. If you are taller you must bend over more to compensate. If you are shorter you will have to grip down on the clubs which will cost you distance. Also buying a set off the rack you get whatever grip happens to be on the clubs from the factory. You probably need smaller or larger grips to fit the size of your hands. the grip is a very important part of your golf swing they must feel good to you. With custom clubs you get the correct length, the right weight, the best size grip and with us a free swing analysis. All of this for about 50% HALF OF what you would pay at a big box store. We take the time to measure your swing speed to get the correct stiffness of the shafts for your swing. We have you try different size grips until you find the one that feels right to you. Then you choose then golf heads that are the most appealing to you. Put all this together and you have custom clubs that fit you all for about 50% the cost of off the rack clubs.
