ROUTE 66

303-841-4910

by Kathy Wolfe

Looking for an interesting vacation idea? Take the ultimate road trip with Tidbits along Route 66, one of the original U.S. Highways. Let’s visit some of the spots on the path, and learn the history of what has been called the Main Street of America. • In 1926, Route 66 was officially commissioned, a 2,448mile (3,940-km) road from Chicago to Los Angeles, winding through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. At the end of that year, just 800 miles (1,287 km) were paved. Road signs didn’t go up until the following year. It wasn’t until 1938 that the entire route was paved, the first highway to have this completed. • Because the route passed through hundreds of small towns, there was a dramatic increase in the number of “mom and pop” businesses, service stations, roadside diners, and motels. America’s first drive-through restaurant, Red’s Giant Hamburg opened along the road in Springfield, Missouri. The Cozy Dog Drive Inn, still in operation today in Springfield, Illinois, offered some of the route’s first fast food and the introduction of the corn dog. The first McDonald’s opened in 1945 in San Bernardino at the end of the road, offering 19ȼ cheeseburgers and 20ȼ malts. It’s now a museum and Route 66 historic site.

ROUTE 66 (continued): • During the massive dust bowl storms of the 1930s in the Midwest, when millions of tons of topsoil were blown away, over 200,000 people migrated to California along Route 66 in search of a better life. John Steinbeck wrote of the migration in his 1939 book The Grapes of Wrath, dubbing the highway the “Mother Road” and the road of flight for “refugees from dust and shrinking land.” • In the 1950s, Route 66 became a vacation destination with a wide variety of roadside attractions. Teepee-shaped motels, trading posts, and tourist traps catered to those visiting caves, canyons, mountains, and deserts. The highway ran through Arizona’s Painted Desert, Meteor Crater, and near the Grand Canyon. During the 1940s, the Wigwam Village chain of motels sprang up along the highway. With individual cabins built in the form of teepees, there were seven original locations. Two of the three remaining motels are located on Route 66, in Holbrook, Arizona and Rialto, California. •

Full-service gas stations popped up along the length of the route. One major company even took its name from the highway. In 1927, the Phillips Company’s newly-developed highoctane gasoline was tested along U.S. Highway 66 in Oklahoma. As the automobile reached its top speed, it was noted that the number was 66 mph (106 km/hr), a fast pace for that era. The new fuel was named Phillips 66, and the company’s shield logo was designed to resemble the road sign.

• Near Amarillo, Texas, travelers can visit Cadillac Ranch, a row of 10 Cadillacs with the tailfins reaching to the sky. The cars, ranging from 1949 to 1963, are half-buried, nose first in the Texas countryside, the brainstorm of a Texas patron of the arts. It’s the only place in Texas where it is legal to spray graffiti on an object.

• Restored to its original grandeur, the world’s largest ketchup bottle stands proudly near Collinsville, Illinois, formerly along Route 66. Built in 1949, this 170-ft.-tall (50-m) structure is actually a water tower painted like a Brooks Rich & Tangy Ketchup bottle, and could actually hold 640,000 14-oz. bottles of ketchup. The Brooks Company left the area in the 1970s. • In 1946, songwriter Bobby Troup was on a crosscountry trip from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles and came up with the idea of writing a song about the journey. The result was “Get Your Kicks on Route 66,” a song that became a huge hit that year for Nat King Cole. When Troup had trouble coming up with lyrics for the tune, he simply filled it with names of towns along the way, starting with the Missouri cities of St. Louis and Joplin, then on to Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Texas, Gallup, New Mexico, the Arizona communities of Winona and Kingman, and California cities Barstow and San Bernardino. Of the eight states that Route 66 passed through, Kansas is the only state not mentioned in the song. • Interest in Route 66 was revitalized in 2006 when Pixar released the animated film Cars, which chronicled the decline of the fictional community of Radiator Springs when the once-booming town was bypassed by the interstate. The idea of Cars was hatched after Pixar’s creative director took a cross-country road trip with his family. He based many of the film’s sites on real-life locations he encountered, including the general store in Hackberry, Arizona, and Erick, Oklahoma’s Sand Hills Curiosity Shop. The movie’s bridges resemble several along Route 66 in Oklahoma, Arizona, and California. The film calls its teepeeshaped motor court the Cozy Cone Motel.

Some cats adapt to common and strange noises instantly and some cats can never adapt to these sounds. Trying to soothe your cat may not work and these sounds may be feared life long. Examples: Computers and printers can create fascination and fun for a curious feline. Turn on the printer and your cat may rush over to sit on it, lie on it and play with the paper as it comes out. Your cat may want to be your computer buddy every time the opportunity presents. Whereas your other cat flees in terror when you do computer/printer things. Cats respond differently to sounds depending on their personality, experiences and their survival instincts. Some cats can learn to accept the noise and some cats cannot.

Cats respond to noise differently than dogs. Dogs use ‘escape behavior’ to run away and hide from thunder and fireworks (freaking out!) whereas cats are Pet scared Products of unexpected household noises from dishwashers, Wild Bird Supplies vacuums, and construction work retreat and hide. Less Gifts often do cats get frightened by thunder andUnique fireworks or they will find a safe place until the disturbance passes.

Survival and genetics play a strong role in protecting the cat from harm. Some cats are genetically afraid of most things (such as a feral barn cat) and will never adjust to living with humans. Cats will retreat to a safe place and hide to survive. Pleasure noises: opening a tuna can will bring your cat running from a sound sleep, sounds of play with other cats and opening the refrigerator. Cats adapt to positive noises very quickly and will teach owners to repeat these actions by purring, meows and seeking attention. Cat train people! If your cat is a scaredy cat, let your cat retreat and hide in a safe place of his choosing. Your cat will usually come out when enough time has passed and it is safe to come out. This behavior is natural and this is what happens to cats in the wild. Luring your cat out of hiding by treats or playing with a toy can help soothe the situation. Desensitization with repeated exposures to the noise at low levels and gradually increasing will help adjust your cat to the noise as being normal. Again, some cats will never adjust to certain noises. A newer way of calming cats is by using pheromone collars. Pheromones can help calm cats and help your cat learn that strange noises are not harmful. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. The Gem Advisor Amber

FREE

Registration! Scott McQueen If you watched the movie Jurassic Park you probably know that amber is fossilized pine tree resin and that some amber have insects trapped inside. In the movie the scientists extract dinosaur DNA from a mosquito. It makes a good story but it does not comport with the geological history of the earth. A mosquito trapped in amber could not contain dinosaur DNA because most amber is too young. It’s only 25 to 50 million years old and the dinosaurs were supposed to have lived and died over 65 million years ago. But don’t let the unlikely story spoil your interest in this most unusual gemstone. The fact is more than 1,000 extinct species of insects have been identified in amber. Amber is mined today in the Baltic states and the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic amber is older and is the preferred stone. Baltic amber is likely to have insect inclusions. But get this: amber prices can range from as little as $20 to as much as $40,000 or more. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. 2 store locations: 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker and 190 S Wilcox in Castle Rock. THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Kitchen Vent Fan Stops Working Q: The vent fan above my stove no longer runs. The light on the vent hood works fine, just the fan is not operating. How can I fix this? -- Lee N., Nashua, N.H. A: Double-check the fuse at the circuit box. Although the vent hood light is working, suggesting that a tripped fuse isn’t the problem, this is the easiest and fastest thing to check. If it has tripped, reset the switch. If that isn’t the issue, it’s time to check the unit itself. Turn off power to the vent fan at the circuit box. Remove the fan’s protective grill and filter. Using a flashlight, peer up past the fan blades to see if you can locate a plug that runs from the fan motor to a receptacle inside the fan unit. If you can’t see it, carefully remove the fan bracket by loosening the mounting screws on either side of the housing. Ease the fan and motor out of the housing just a few inches to see how it’s connected. If the fan has a plug from the motor to the receptacle, make sure it is plugged in completely. Inspect the plug cord for fraying or other damage and take a look at the receptacle as well. Now is a good time to get a look at the fan itself and make sure the blades are undamaged and attached securely. If you can’t see anything wrong, plug the unit in securely, remount the fan and motor, and test the fan by turning the circuit back on and then switching the fan on. If the motor is directly wired to the house wiring, proceed with caution. You will need to use a circuit tester to make sure no power is reaching the unit. Without touching any bare wires, place one probe from your circuit tester into one of the wire connectors. Place the other probe against the grounding screw on the fan unit’s metal housing. If the circuit tester glows, power is still reaching the unit -- don’t do anything until you’ve switched off the correct circuit at the panel. Repeat the test with all the wire connectors. Once you’ve ensured power is not reaching the fan unit, make sure the wiring is not frayed or otherwise damaged. If it is, bring in an electrician to repair the wires and check the entire circuit for unseen problems.
