Public libraries have existed since around 288 B.C. The best-known early public library, considered the first, was the Great Library of Alexandria, properly called the Royal Library of Alexandria, in Egypt.

• The ancient library served as a great resource center for scholars as well as the general public. It had around 700,000 scrolls, equivalent to more than 100,000 printed books. The original library was destroyed after about 600 years. The exact date and cause of the destruction is unclear but many attribute its demise to Julius Caesar.

• When the uprising in Egypt occurred earlier this year many people did not realize that a major world library might be destroyed again! The Bibliotheca Alexandrina was built from 1994 to 2002 to replace the ancient library. The new library, designed by a Norwegian firm, Shohetta, is modern with a glass-paneled roof inclined toward the Mediterranean Sea, symbolizing the image of the Egyptian sun illuminating the world.

LIBRARIES FOR ALL (continued): • That is not the largest library in the world though. The U.S. Library of Congress holds that honor with nearly 20 million books. The original building for the Library of Congress, established in 1800, was also destroyed by fire. It was burned by the British in 1814 during the War of 1812, and rebuilding started immediately. Former President Thomas Jefferson sold his personal library to Congress to help replace the books that were destroyed. The appraised value of his collection was $23,950 and more than doubled the original library.

• Fire caused the loss of many books and entire libraries in the early years. Many churches and early government officials were instrumental in establishing and protecting history through donating works and rebuilding buildings after fires reduced libraries to ashes.

• In 1875, there were 188 public libraries in the United States. By 1886, there were more than 600. The importance of public libraries was steadily growing when Scottish-American Andrew Carnegie made books even more accessible. • Carnegie was one of the richest men in the world, making his fortune in steel production and construction. He resolved by the age of 33 to keep only $50,000 a year from his earnings and use the rest to help others. His “Gospel of Wealth,” was to “make no effort to increase fortune but spend the surplus each year for benevolent purposes. Cast aside business forever except for others.” He gave away more than $333 million — 90 percent of his fortune. Included in this benevolence was the creation of more than 1,600 free public library buildings in 1,412 American communities, 125 in Canada and more in his native Scotland and around the world.

• In order for a community to receive library funds from Carnegie, they had to commit to providing land for the building with room for expansion as needs arose and a budget for operation and maintenance. He insisted on community commitment. The first Carnegie Library was built in Dunfermline, Scotland, Carnegie’s hometown. The first in the United States was in Braddock, Pennsylvania.

Cat Q & A
What Is Zoonosis and Why You Should Care? Zoonosis refers to a parasite or other disease, like rabies, that can be passed from animals to humans. Members of your family can unknowingly pick up a zoonotic disease at the park, on a sidewalk, or even in their own backyard. Children are especially vulnerable to zoonotic disease, mostly because children play outside and sometimes have a tendency to put objects in their mouths. Cat Specialist takes parasites and zoonotic disease transmission very seriously. We STRONGLY recommend annual parasite testing and a monthly prevention program. Please call our hospital to learn more how we can protect your family and cat from zoonotic diseases.

• Cats purr when they are happy, sick, and even dying. Cats use the purr to ‘kitty meditate’. Purring is unique to the cat and it soothes other species that are near. Humans, horses, and other animals are calmed by the presence of a purring cat. It is common for a human physician to recommend getting a cat or dog to companion a person with chronic illness. • Cats can purr both during inhalation and exhalation. Try purring yourself – you can’t purr during inhalation. • Smart frightened cats purr to avoid confrontation with other cats and to communicate submission. Many fights are resolved with a purr. • Queening mothers purr while giving birth and when caring for their kittens. The kittens in return purr while nursing and interacting with mom. Nursing kittens can nurse and purr at the same time. • Purring appears to be a totally voluntary response. Cat under anesthesia or unconscious do not purr. • Most of the purr sounds come from the chest and to a secondary degree the vocal cords. The exact mechanism of the purr is still a mystery. What is known: air moves through the lungs causing the diaphragm and large blood vessels to vibrate – purring starts in the chest and abdominal areas; the vocal cords have a secondary involvement in the purr cycle. Some cats purr so loud that they rattle and drool! Combined with a happy purr is kneading of the paws. Cats experiencing both are appear to be on an extreme plane of pleasure. • In the language of the cat, the “purr” has evoked the most curiosity from cat owners and veterinary professionals. The “meow” is second and appears to have a unique ‘calling’ to humans. The “hiss”, the “growl”, the “grunt”, and the “chirp” all communicate specific moods of the cat but the “purr” communicates contentment and peace. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. This building was a result of the largest library bond issue ever submitted in the United States. The “Libraries for All” bond was for a proposed $196.4 million for a makeover of the entire Seattle Public Library system, including the new Central building. The project was completed in 2008 with donations and other gifts totaling $290.7 million. The new library is a beautiful architectural gem that is bustling with activity. Carnegie would be proud that he helped encourage this years ago!

• The Toronto Public Library system is the largest in Canada with 99 branches. It also has the distinction of being the world’s busiest urban library system. Toronto is still using seven of the 10 libraries that were opened in the city using Carnegie grants. • Two of the most unique public libraries in the world are in the country of Columbia. Three rocklike buildings on a prominent peak overlooking the city of Medellín offer patrons a beautiful place to browse the open stacks of books and a wonderful view. The building looks like three separate dark stones, but they are all connected underground. • The other unique library in Columbia travels on the backs of two donkeys! “Biblioburro” is the service offered by Luis Soriano, a primary school teacher who saw the need for rural children to have more access to books. The burros, Alfa and Beto (based on the word “alphabet”), have been carrying Luis and books to more than 4,000 youngsters since 1990. He and his wife also built the largest free library in Madgalena, next to their home. • Similar to the Biblioburro are bookmobiles, bussized vehicles driven into rural areas and allowing children and adults to peruse the shelves for reading material. The first was actually a book wagon used in Washington County, Maryland, in 1905. Modern bookmobiles are still in use today. • While the first public libraries consisted of many volumes of scrolls mostly made of papyrus and displayed in pigeon-hole shelves, today’s libraries contain hard and soft bound books, magazines, computers, music, movies and more. Libraries have been and will continue to be an important part of communities. Check out your public library soon!

Over the last few week’s we’ve talked about tourmalines: rubellite (red/pink), green, paraiba (blue/green), yellow, and blue tourmalines. There is one more tourmaline that creators of specialized jewelry pieces love – the multicolored tourmaline. Because each multi-colored tourmaline is absolutely unique from the next jewelry makers are able to create completely inimitable works of art. Even two stones cut from the same raw crystal can differ in color adding to the varying possibilities for goldsmiths and designers. Tourmalines are not only fashionable as jewelry but may also have therapeutic uses. Many believe they possess energizing and restorative qualities that come from their wealth of minerals and energetic conductivity. If you own a multicolored tourmaline piece you can be almost positive that it is absolutely unique. If you don’t, ask your jeweler to show you one. They’re magnificent. PHOTO: Alicia Silverstone Q: With the Emmy Awards a recent memory -- and Jane Lynch doing a fabulous job hosting -- I was wondering if you could tell me who will be the host for the next Academy Awards? -- Deidre S., via e-mail A: Actor/comedian EdCindy Rose die Murphy, 50, has been selected to host the 84th annual Academy Awards. The ceremony, which is to be held Feb. 12, 2012, will mark the first time that the funnyman has hosted the show. His selection as the only host marks a return to the single-host format, which has gone by the wayside in recent years as the Academy opted for multiple hosts -- some choices successful (Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin) and some not so successful (James Franco and Anne Hathaway). Eddie says he is “enormously honored” to be given hosting duties, and I’m excited to see what he has in store for viewers. *** Q: I read in your column a few months back that Alicia Silverstone had given birth to a son, and it got me to thinking if she has plans to return to the big, or small, screen soon? -- Darren F., Portland, Ore. A: Alicia returns to her comedic roots with the help of Amy Heckerling, who also gave the beautiful actress her big break when she was chosen to portray Cher in the classic highschool comedy “Clueless.” With Amy writing and directing and Alicia starring, the new film “Vamps” is gearing up to bring to the new influx of vampire movies what “Clueless” brought to high-school-comedy movies. “Vamps” centers on Alicia (“Goody”) and Krysten Ritter (“Stacy”) as they try to live as “good” vampires in New York City. “Vamps” also stars Sigourney Weaver and Malcolm McDowell, and should hit theaters some time next year. *** Q: I’m so glad that “The Mentalist” has returned for its fourth season, and I wanted to know when the previous season would be out on DVD. -- Steven S., Akron, Ohio A: Simon Baker and the rest of the crew have their work cut out for them this season, but now you can relive season three -- which proved to be spellbinding and suspenseful in its own right -- anytime you’d like at home, as Warner Home Video recently released it on DVD. “The Mentalist: The Complete Third Season” is a five-disc collection featuring all 24 episodes, plus two featurettes and some unaired scenes. *** Q: I know you’re a fan of “Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura,” so you might be able to tell me: Will it be back for a third season? -- Patrick L., via e-mail A: I am thrilled to report that truTV recently announced that an eight-episode third season of “Conspiracy Theory” will air in 2012, with Jesse at the helm and June Sarpong at his right hand, along with newcomers Tyrel Ventura (Jesse’s son) and Sean Stone (Oliver Stone’s son). Like me, I’m sure you can’t wait to see a new season of myth-debunking, truth-seeking and Ventura-style entertainment. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. JILL JACKSON’S HOLLYWOOD By Tony Rizzo
PHOTO: Johnny Depp
HOLLYWOOD -- It looks like “The Lone Ranger” won’t be riding again as soon as expected. As we reported earlier, Armie Hammer of “The Social Network” was cast in the title role, with Johnny Depp set to play his trusted companion, Tonto. The Jerry Bruckheimer production was budgeted at $250 million, which Disney balked at, demanding the budget be slashed to $200 million. You’d think with the billions Bruckheimer and Depp made for Disney on the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, it would give them what they want -- but times are tough! In the meantime, Depp has “The Rum Diary,” a film based on an early novel by journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Depp plays a writer who leaves New York in the 1950s to write for a newspaper in Puerto Rico and becomes a heavy drinker and womanizer. Sounds like my kind of a job! The film, due out Oct. 28, also stars Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi, Richard Jenkins and Amber Heard of “Pineapple Express” and “Zombieland.” Meanwhile, the script for “Pirates of the Caribbean 5” has been completed, but Depp wants a break before he dives into that character again.

Armie Hammer, who has completed work on Clint Eastwood’s “Edgar” film about FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover, is about to play the prince in “The Brothers Grimm: Snow White.” Lily Collins, daughter of pop singer Phil Collins, has the title role, with Julia Roberts as the evil witch and Nathan Lane along for comic relief. *** Ever wonder how William Shakespeare found time to write all those complicated plays? That question is posed by the Oct. 28 release of “Anonymous.” Scholars have wondered for years if Shakespeare’s plays were written by him or penned by others, such as The Earl of Oxford, for one. Their argument is presented with the help of award-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave, her daughter Joely Redgrave, David Thewlis and Derek Jacobi, an authority on Shakespeare who endorses this theory. How much higher would our grades have been in English class if we hadn’t had to read all those long, hard-to-understand plays? *** Finally, did you believe that roast last week of Charlie Sheen? Is there no level to which he will stoop? It wasn’t enough that he nearly lost the jobs and income of the cast and crew of “Two and a Half Men” with his tirades, but he believed he could harm the reboot of the show by scheduling his roast opposite the premiere of his replacement, Ashton Kutcher. During the low-class ... no, strike that ... no-class roast, Sheen was referred to as “a drug addict,” “an abuser of women,” “a connoisseur of porn stars and prostitutes,” “a horrible actor” and “a reckless loser” -- and those are the nicer things we could print. In other words, he’s a loser, a bruiser and a boozer! Send letters to Tony Rizzo’s Hollywood, 8306 Wilshire Blvd., No. 362, Beverly Hills, CA 90211. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Reinvesting Dividends Can Pay Off When you invest in stocks, you want their price to go up. But of course, you can’t control the rise and fall of stock prices. However, there is a key element of investing that you can control — the number Cindy Rose of shares you own. And in the long run, share ownership may be more important than rising stock prices in determining your long-term investment success. Of course, you might think that the advice of “buy more shares” is easier said than done. After all, not everyone can easily find a lot of extra money to invest. But you don’t need access to vast wealth to increase your share ownership — you just need to consistently reinvest your stock dividends. Just how important are reinvested dividends to wealth accumulation, as compared to capital gains (the increase in stock prices)? Over the 135-year period from 1871 through 2003, owning stocks and reinvesting the dividends produced 97% of all stock market returns, with only 3% coming from capital gains, according to a major study done by Dr. Jeremy Siegel, one of the world’s leading researchers on stock market performance. Other studies have also pointed to the importance of dividends as a component of total returns. What are the implications of this disparity between the effectiveness of dividend reinvestment versus that of capital gains? First of all, it suggests that you may not want to spend an undue amount of time and effort in chasing after “hot” stocks, hoping for big capital gains. For one thing, by the time you buy these stocks, they may already be cooling off, but even more importantly, your focus on achieving large capital gains may not be the best use of your financial resources. Ultimately, the power of dividend reinvestment means, not surprisingly, that you may be able to help yourself if you look for quality dividend-paying stocks — and then reinvest the dividends, month after month and year after year. With just a little research, you can find stocks that have paid — and even increased — dividends for many years in a row. (Keep in mind, though, that not all stocks will pay dividends, and even those that do can reduce or discontinue them at any time. Dividend reinvestment does not ensure a profit or protect against loss.) So, to help boost your share ownership, consider reinvesting the dividends back into the stock, rather than taking them as cash payments. If you do choose to reinvest your dividends, though, you will need to look to other types of investments to provide you with income, assuming you need some income from your portfolio, which may become more necessary during your retirement years. Your financial advisor can help you determine the appropriate investments to help provide this income. But in any case, if you can do without the current income provided by dividends, give careful consideration to reinvesting them. Dividend reinvestment is not a glamorous investment strategy, and it won’t help you “get rich quick,” but it can help you make steady progress toward your long-term financial goals — and that’s a key dividend in itself.

Check the Fireplace And Chimney Generally, it’s recommended to do a chimney sweep annually. This will make sure all the fumes are able to escape and don’t back up into the home. It’s not a bad idea to call a chimney sweep for an inspection if you plan on using it a lot.
Many people are under the wrong impression that God is mad, or that God is angry at them, and the challenges they are facing are a result God’s vengeance. Before you fire up the furnace for the first time, you should change the filter and check it’s efficiency. An HVAC contractor is able to test the heating output and make any adjustments if need be. They can also check to see if there are any hazards waiting to happen with the furnace. It’s a good idea to get a carbon monoxide tester before you fire the furnace up too. Stock up on extra air filters and try to install a new one every month. It’ll prevent the furnace working harder than it has to. After your furnace has been tuned up to its maximum efficiency, take a moment to inspect your heating ducts and vents. Clear them off from any dust or other things that might have built up over summer. Go around your house and check your windows and doors for leaks. If you feel any drafts, go to your local hardware store and they’ll help you seal them up. This will help keep your house warm and help your furnace not work so hard.
No matter what challenges, no matter what obstacles, no matter what the world is telling you is impossible, Jesus can make a way where there seems to be no way. Jesus is the way-maker for everyone in this life who will put their trust in Him!
Won’t you open your heart to Him today? Did you know, that if you were the only person on this earth, Jesus would have still died for you, that is how much he loves you? He has made a way for you, he has made a way for you to live in total victory in your life, no matter what challenges come your way! Simply call on him right now, say Lord Jesus, thank you for dying for me, I believe you love me and that you were raised from the dead, and as I call on you, you will come and live in my heart forever. My eternal destiny is sealed, and now help me to live, an overcoming, victorious life in You, that brings glory to your name! I invite You into every area of my being and choose to follow You all the days of my life, in Jesus’ name! Amen.

Seasoned wood is the best for fires because it burns longer and cleaner. So that pile you left outside all summer should be ready to go. Don’t forget to keep the stack of wood at least 30 feet from your house.

As nice as it is to watch the leaves change colors, you can’t forget to clean out the gutters from all of those leaves. It’s best to clean them a couple times each fall, especially if you have big, leafy trees close to your house. If the gutters are clogged, it’ll cause water to spill over and could affect your foundation along with increasing the risk of having ice form on walkways.
Yard Maintenance Disconnect garden hoses and, if practical, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. This reduces the chance of freezing in the section of pipe just inside the house. You’re not an insurance professional and that’s OK!
