• The “Snap-It Screw” was invented by Nancy Tedeschi. “The old saying that necessity is the mother of inventions is what inspired [it],” said Tedeschi. She meant it literally, as it was her own mother who inspired the invention’s creation. • Tedeschi’s mother was overseas doing volunteer work when a hinge screw in her glasses broke. Left with no other immediate remedy, Tedeschi’s mother pulled the pin out of one of her earrings and placed it where the former hinge had been. turn the page for more!

America is a country full of would-be inventors. For most, it’s as simple as discovering a problem that no one’s ever solved and coming up with a creative and inexpensive solution. Here are just a few of the countless TV marvels that have been advertised on our sets since this phenomenon began. • A good example of the whole “discover a problem, discover a solution” method of inventing is the “Snap-It Screw.” It’s a method of replacing the tiny, and difficult to handle, screws that hold eyeglasses together.

“As Seen on TV” (continued): • “She wore this dangling bead from the hinge of her glasses for about a year. She traveled to several foreign countries with it in, and people would literally stop her on the streets and ask her where she got this charm,” said Tedeschi. “My mom came to me and said, ‘You have to invent charms for glasses.’” • For Tedeschi, inventing the “Snap-It Screw” was the easy part. The difficult part was doing all the things necessary to produce and market her new invention. She had to set up patents all over the world. She had to set up a factory in China and a warehouse in Seattle, Washington. She had to spend countless hours marketing her idea to retailers. Today, the “Snap-It Screw” is a success, and Tedeschi says that despite all the hard work, she wouldn’t change a thing. • “Bling To Go” was invented by Abby Appelt during a period where she was forced to use crutches. She felt the dull metal could use a little pizzazz. So she created some decorative wrap-on decals to give her crutches some personality, and her invention was born. • Appelt said, When I wore my crutch décor, I had people stop me, literally everywhere I went, complimenting me on how awesome my crutches were! • As Appelt notes, people decorate a million different things with stickers, so it made sense to do likewise with crutches. • “Bling To Go” works on crutches, canes, walkers and bed poles. It’s a medical grade product that can be sanitized and cleaned, so it presents no health hazard to the user. The company’s slogan is “express your health,” and they back up their words by being active contributors to several physical and emotional health charities. • Perhaps one of the more peculiar and innovative creations making the invention circuit is the “Bogdon Bass.” It’s a standing bass guitar whose main component is a cardboard box! • The “Bogdon Bass” is literally a large cardboard box sealed with tape, with a wooden neck and vinyl strings. It can be played with or without an amplifier. Because of the use of these materials, it is lightweight, inexpensive and recyclable. • This peculiar instrument was invented by a man named Chris Badynee. He named the instrument after his father, Bogdon.

• “The inspiration to make my Bogdon Box Bass was that I had the desire to own something that I couldn’t afford, so I made one myself,” explained Badynee. “All I wanted was a natural-sounding upright bass for my own home recordings of songs I wrote.” Continued on page 7

Cat Q & A Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc
Mosquitoes – a Looming Threat! Heartworm disease in dogs and cats is on the rise in Colorado. Infected domestic and wild canines carry the disease (the reservoir) and the mosquitoes spread it (the vector) through their bite in search of a blood meal. The Colorado mosquito/ insects have become major health threats for many common diseases – examples: West Nile virus and Heartworm disease. Heartworm disease in dogs is preventable and if your dog gets infected the disease is treatable. Blood testing first before putting your dog on the preventative medication is highly recommended. If your dog comes down with the disease an effective treatment exists. In Colorado the coyote and fox are the primary host/reservoirs that serve to infect other secondary species: cats, raccoons, bears, etc. and in rare instances – humans. Heartworm disease in the cat is a completely different story. There are less accurate diagnostic tests to detect the disease and there is no effective treatment for cats once they get the disease. 50% of infected cats will die within two years. Sudden death without any warning or variable signs of a chronic cough, trouble breathing, weight loss, lethargy, and vomiting may be seen with feline heartworm disease. These clinical signs develop slowly over a 6-9 month period and mimic many common diseases seen in the cat, especially asthma. A new approach in treating the deadly secondary signs is improving the odds of your cat surviving heartworm disease but prevention is the key! Indoor cats are at risk because mosquitoes go everywhere. Safe and effective preventive medications are available. Year round protection (a full 12 months) is recommended in Colorado. Preventive medication is easy to use – chewable tablets for dogs and a safe liquid applied to the skin for cats once every 30 days. If you have mosquitoes around your house at any time of the year your cats and dogs are at risk. “An ounce of prevention” is best because there is no treatment/cure if your cat gets infected. Call Cat Specialist and talk to our nurses if you have questions about feline heartworm disease and start now – 303-663-2287. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. For more information please visit his comprehensive website: www.CatSpecialist.com
Why Bring Your Cat to Cat Specialist? We’re a full service CATS ONLY clinic with a big difference: We feature the only practicing Board Certified feline specialist in Colorado, and a highly specialized staff to back him up. We’ve Got “Cat-itude” – Our veterinary nurses know and respect cats. We don’t deal with any other species! We’re able to handle nearly every cat in a quiet, calm manner – even if the cat is scared or angry. Not only does your cat not SEE dogs, but he or she won’t smell or hear them either, which helps get each visit off to a great start. From there, our experienced staff is able to “read” each cat, keeping the visit as stress-free as possible.

Scott McQueen Tourmaline comes in a variety of colors, however green is considered the classical tourmaline color, or should I say shades of green. Some are very light green, and others are so dark that the green color can only be seen when held against a bright light. The blue-green to dark green tourmalines are the most popular but also the most rare, perhaps because they are worn by both men and women. Don’t let the variety of names for tourmalines confuse you. A bottle-green tourmaline my be referred to as a “Brazilian tourmaline” but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the stone came from Brazil…it could have come from Africa. Tourmalines that are a lighter green are often referred to as “African Tourmalines” but it doesn’t necessarily mean they came from Africa…they might have come from Brazil. Totally confused? Me too. Let’s make it simple: If the origin of your tourmaline is important – ask a trustworthy gemologist. You’ll love a green tourmaline ring or necklace because the colors are harmonious with the environment and transmit a stunning vivacity. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. Q: Our basement was outfitted as a “dry basement” several years ago and then finished to become additional living space, which we use as a rec room and for storage. I’ve noticed a musty smell for some time, and after heavy rains last week I saw water pooling near a corner of the basement. However, I can’t find the source of the leak. What can I do? -- Tara in St. Louis A: It sounds like there is a leak somewhere in the foundation. You’re right to be looking at that one corner as the most likely source of the water leak, but determining where

the water is entering may be difficult. Dry basements are made so through a number of techniques, including directing rainwater away from your home’s foundation. This is accomplished through surface drainage (such as your home’s gutter system) as well as subsurface drainage, which stops water which has percolated through the surface from entering the basement. Subsurface drainage is typically put in place at the time of a home’s construction. This includes sloping the ground beneath the planned basement floor to direct water away from the house, adding a gravel layer and a nonpermeable layer above that, and then pouring the basement’s concrete floor. Basement walls should be sealed on the outside at the time of construction. Over time, concrete basement walls can develop tiny cracks that let more moisture through. This may be happening in your basement. There may be a larger crack near your home’s foundation that is letting more water in, or perhaps something has changed in the way runoff moves away from your home’s foundation. Patch larger cracks in the driveway or in masonry or concrete surrounding your home. Check the exterior of your house. Is the gutter system in good repair? Where do the drainspouts end? They should extend out from the foundation. If rainwater is pouring directly onto the foundation, it could be seeping more rapidly into the basement. If none of these seem to be a problem or don’t clear up the leakage issue, contact a professional contractor who specializes in basement moisture problems to snoop out deeper issues. HOME TIP: Use a humidifier in the basement during the summer months to combat excess humidity and minor condensation. Send your questions or tips to ask@thisisahammer.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

As Seen on TV (continued): • After assembling what he thought was just a silly idea only he’d use, Badynee was shocked by how good the makeshift instrument sounded. “[It] sounded so fantastic that I had to tell someone. So I filmed a 60-second video and posted it on the web. I got 1,000 hits on Youtube in less than a day.” • The video became a bit of a viral sensation, and Badynee was asked by “Good Morning, America” for the right to show the video on their program. • Almost immediately after the video was shown on television, Badynee received requests to buy a “Bogdon Box.” He brought in his uncle and a couple of acoustic technicians to help him perfect it. Once they got the instrument exactly right, they began selling it on Ebay to a huge response. Hundreds were sold, almost as quickly as they could turn them out. • Badynee took the profits from those sales to protect and patent his invention. Eventually, his belief in his invention paid off in praise, when his bass was given a rave review in “Bass Player Magazine.” • A well-known invention marketed via television infomercials is the Snuggie. This blanket with sleeves solved a problem most people didn’t even know they had. • Since it covers your entire body but keeps your hands free thanks to its armholes, Snuggie wearers stay warm while still retaining the ability to take sip of their drink, change the channel or turn the page of a book. • The Snuggie was introduced in 2008 and was an instant success. By 2009, 20 million Snuggies had been sold. But there was actually a similar product already on the market, The Slanket, invented by Gary Clegg when he was a college freshman.

in tongue crevices, between the teeth or under the gums. In just a matter of time these voracious bugs have to go to the bathroom, and they then “poop and pee” right there on your tongue, teeth, and gums! The result - more stinky waste products known as “Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSC’s). Sticky post nasal drip from the sinuses slides down the throat, coats the back of the tongue, and becomes a smelly layer of bacteria-loaded mucous and stinky VSC’s.

Another obvious cause of “stinky breath” is smoking. Smokers Breath comes from the stinky air expired from the lungs, which then bathes across the nicotine-saturated oral tissues before being expired.

Q. Are there other conditions that cause stinky breath?
Master, Academy of General Dentistry
A. Yes: Infection, either in the mouth or elsewhere can cause halitosis. Other culprits include diabetes, liver malfunction, tobacco and alcohol use, certain medications and medical conditions that cause dry mouth (Xerostomia). Stress, dieting, snoring, aging, and hormonal changes can also cause stinky breath.

A. Dry Mouth is a big reason for Morning Breath. Saliva is a key ingredient in the mouth that helps keep odor under control by helping wash away food particles and bacteria. During sleep, organ systems, including the salivary glands, slow down. Reduced production of saliva allows bacteria to multiply inside the mouth. Ever notice parts of your mouth sticking together when you wake up? That’s the “dry mouth” condition caused when the salivary glands go to sleep. Skipping breakfast, being hungry, or fasting can also cause dry mouth and morning breath. Breakfast skippers beware: Morning Mouth can reappear even after brushing your teeth. Remember to listen to your mother when she told you to NOT SKIP BREAKFAST!
A. Halitosis, is commonly known as “Bad Breath”. A recent study in the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) Journal, General Dentistry, defines Halitosis as a term to describe “any disagreeable odor of expired air”. Bad (or Stinky) Breath “is a generally-accepted term for foul smells emanating from the mouth.” Over 80 million people (and those nearby!) suffer from chronic bad breath. Q. What causes “Stinky Breath”? A. Lots of things: Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease), wastes from bacteria, decay of food particles and other debris, poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, stomach problems, and a sinus condition called “post nasal drip”. Bacteria (“bugs”) feast on the banquet of tiny (but huge to the bugs) food particles stuck

National Grandparents Day is celebrated on September 9. If you’re a grandparent yourself, you already know the pleasures of having grandchildren in your life. So you may want to take this occasion to think of ways you can help those grandchildren get the most out of their lives.
Cindy Rose a pretty good investment.
Perhaps the most valuable thing you could give to your grandkids is the gift of education. Consider this: Over a lifetime, college graduates earn, on average, about $1 million more than those without a degree according to the Census Bureau. So, putting money toward your grandchildren’s college education is probably
Furthermore, your grandchildren may well need the help, because college is expensive and costs continue to rise. Consequently, you may want to contribute to a 529 plan. You have several options for how the money can be invested and contribution limits are quite high. All withdrawals are free from federal income taxes, provided the money is used for qualified college expenses. (Keep in mind, though, that non-qualified withdrawals will be taxable and possibly subject to penalties.) Plus, if you invest in your own state’s 529 plan, your contributions may be deductible on your state income taxes. If you name one grandchild as a beneficiary of a 529 plan and that grandchild decides not to go to college, you can switch the account to another grandchild — in other words, you maintain control of the money for the life of the account. Of course, despite its economic benefits, college is not for everyone. So if you wanted to provide financial help to a grandchild who seems likely to choose a different route in life, what could you do? One possibility is to set up a custodial account, often known as an UGMA (Uniform Gift to Minors Act) or UTMA (Uniform Transfer to Minors Act). You can fund a custodial account with many different types of investments, but the use of the money is entirely up to your grandchildren when they reach the age of termination in whatever state in which they live. But if your reason for funding a custodial account is simply to provide a gift, then you might not be concerned with how the money is used. On the other hand, if you want to give your grandchildren a financial gift with greater control, you may want to speak to your attorney about your options. One possibility is to set up an irrevocable trust. You can fund this trust with either cash or securities and specify at the time the trust is created when the funds can be used. So For example, you can provide that the trust pay your grandchild a certain amount of money at one age, with another installment coming several years later. Keep in mind, though, that trusts are complex instruments and may have tax considerations, so in addition to consulting with an attorney, you’ll want to discuss your plans with your tax advisor. Whichever option is right for your family, use Grandparents Day as an opportunity to consider the ways in which you can give something to the grandchildren who give so much to you. STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver ¥ It was American singer Josh Groban who made the following sage observation: “There’s no halfsinging in the shower, you’re either a rock star or an opera diva.” ¥ If you’re considering having a child sometime in the near future, you might want to consider this: It’s said that the cost of caring for a newborn during its first year of life is more than $6,000. ¥ In 1986, actor and director Clint Eastwood took on a new and unfamiliar role: political candidate. He ran for mayor of Carmel, Calif. He defeated the incumbent mayor in a landslide, and he kept the position for two years. His salary? A whopping $200 per week. ¥ Often these days you’ll see someone carrying a tiny dog around with them, but you might be surprised to learn that this is not an entirely new fashion. In ancient Rome and Greece it was not uncommon for a noble lady to carry her tiny Maltese dog around in the sleeve of her robe.

¥ In the early days of motion pictures, Will H. Hays became known as the “Czar of Hollywood.” He presided over the earliest incarnation of the MPAA, charged with ensuring the morality of movies. Some of the changes the so-called “Hays Office” insisted upon were removing the image of a cow’s udder from a Walt Disney cartoon; and removing any direct reference to adultery in the 1935 adaptation of the Tolstoy novel “Anna Karenina” -- despite the fact that Anna’s affair is at the heart of the novel.

POLICE RESPONSE This is the true story of George Phillips of Meridian, Mississippi, who was going to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the shed. George opened the door to go turn off the light but saw there were people in the shed in the process of stealing things. He immediately phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?" and George said no and explained the situation. Then they explained that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be there when available. George said, "Okay," hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again. "Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I've just shot them all." Then he hung up. Within five minutes three squad cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up. Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed. One of the policemen said to George: "I thought you said that you'd shot them!" George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"
