• When you’re asleep, your body may be resting but your brain certainly isn’t! It remains hard at work constantly giving orders to the body’s various systems to keep it breathing, pumping blood, and digesting. Short-term memories are recorded in the brain during sleep. Did you know that sleeping shortly after learning something new will actually improve your ability to remember it?

Tidbits® of Douglas & Elbert Counties Z-Z-Z’S (continued):
• Sleep deprivation has numerous negative effects on the body’s functions and well-being. A recent Harvard study has tied insufficient or irregular sleep to an increased risk for colon cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease in those who slept less than six hours a night. A shortage of sleep can put the body into a state of “high alert,” which can drive up blood pressure, putting a person at risk for heart attack and stroke. Just one extra hour a night can decrease your heart attack risk by 33%. And consider what that extra sleep will do for your family, social, and work relationships when you are less irritable, impatient, anxious, and depressed!
• Lack of sufficient sleep can even lead to obesity! The hormones leptin and ghrelin are instrumental in controlling feelings of hunger and fullness. Inadequate sleep can increase production of ghrelin, which stimulates the appetite, raising the sensation of hunger by as much as 25%. Leptin signals the brain when the body is full, but not enough shut-eye drives leptin levels down. Combine these two and it’s a recipe for obesity. • Even an increase in wrinkles can occur when you don’t get enough rest. Your body releases extra cortisol, the “stress hormone” when you don’t get enough rest. Cortisol breaks down the skin’s collagen, that substance that maintains skin’s elasticity. • It’s a little alarming to know that 23% of commercial airline pilots admit that sleep deprivation affects their performance at least once a week. One-fifth of those surveyed disclosed that they have made serious mistakes as a result. Fourteen percent of truck drivers confess a “near miss” due to lack of sleep, while 44% of them say they never or rarely get enough sleep on work nights.

• Staying awake for just 17 hours leads to decreased performance equivalent to a blood alcohol level of 0.05%. No sleep for 21 hours is comparable to 0.08% blood alcohol content. • How do you know if you’re sleep deprived? A sure sign is if it takes you less than five minutes to fall asleep at night. The optimum amount of time is between 10 and 15 minutes. Other symptoms include irritability, nervousness, and inability to tolerate stress, and problems with concentration and memory. You might also notice blurred vision, hand tremors, or a change in appetite. • We each have an internal “master clock” in our brains that coordinates the rhythm of our body’s functions. Known as the “circadian clock,” it is affected by external environmental factors, with light as the main factor influencing our 24hour circadian cycle. These rhythms influence our sleep cycles, hormone release, and body temperature, and function best with a normal light-dark cycle. This master clock controls the productions of the hormone melatonin, the one that makes us sleepy. When there is less light, the clock tells the brain to produce more melatonin, resulting in drowsiness. When a person’s work hours are scheduled during the normal sleep period, it’s difficult to stay awake, but it can also be a health risk. It’s believed that melatonin protects the body against cancer. For those who are exposed to light at night, melatonin levels are reduced, and researchers believe those people are more prone to colon and breast cancer. • Studies indicate that the risk of cardiovascular disease declines significantly when a person regularly sleeps seven hours a night.

Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc
Fat is an amazing organ that has unlimited potential to grow. This tissue is a source of hormones, stem cells, nutrition, and bio-communication substances called adipokines. Fat is not an inactive part of the body as formerly thought but it is very essential for health and intensifying disease complexes. Bad adipokines secreted by fat cells in obesity influence disease conditions such as increased body weight, insulin resistance in diabetes, atherosclerosis, inflammation & soreness, blood clotting problems, and degenerative joint disease to name a few. Many of the positive endocrine effects that fat are responsible for are essential in the proper functioning of the liver, pancreas, brain, immune system, veins & arteries, and reproductive organs. Up-regulation or down-regulaton of the many adipokines are responsible for how our body works and responds to disease. Controlling obesity and specifically the type of fat and region where fat accumulates are linked to many of our modern cat diseases. White fat is found throughout the body and is responsible for common body functions such as energy storage, insulation from cold, physical support of organs, nurturing stem cells, and some endrocrine functions. The brown fat associated with belly fat and the inguinal fat deposits (that swing as a cat walks) is associated more with endrocrine functions and may influence fat’s links to disease.

What are some links of obesity to disease that are known in the cat?
Diabetes type 2 has a strong link to obesity (2-4 times a risk factor) Insulin resistance Inflammation, arthritis and sore joints increase More susceptibility to disease and decreased immune response Circulatory problems Appetite stimulation Poor metabolism and fatigue Dental disease
The cat’s modern, dry, carbohydrate rich diet may be the most important cause of obesity in felines. Cats are obligate carnivores and poorly utilize carbohydrates. The large majority of carbohydrate laden foods are converted directly to fat in the cat. The link between diet and disease in felines is very strong. Feeding cats higher protein, high fat, and low carbohydrate diets is what nature intended – mice and birds fit this natural model. Most dry cat foods are convenient but when fed as a complete diet appear to a primary cause of obesity. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Garbage Disposal Unit Is Jammed Q: I have a food disposer in the kitchen sink that came with the house. Yesterday while grinding up some food, it just stopped working. Does it need to be replaced? -- Carmen in Albuquerque, N.M. A: Food disposers are very reliable appliances, but if they’re underpowered they may be prone to jamming or, when under a heavy load, will shut off. Turn the disposal switch on the wall to the on position. Do you hear a humming sound, but no grinding? Or do you hear no sound at all? If you hear a humming sound, it’s likely that the grinder is jammed. Turn the switch off, and then turn off power to the disposal at the main circuit panel. Now, open the sink cabinet and look underneath the disposer. You should see a reset button and possibly a small round hole or slot in the center of the unit. The slot is likely an access point for the impeller. It’s accessed with a small handheld wrench (like the Allen wrench that often comes with assemble-yourself furniture), which hopefully is stored on or near the unit. Insert the wrench into the impeller slot and turn it clockwise to try and unjam the unit. To see if it worked, turn power to the unit back on at the circuit panel. Then climb under the cabinet again, locate the reset button and push it. Go up to the power switch and turn it on. The grinder should operate again. What if you can’t locate a wrench or an access slot for the impeller? You could always try my mother’s favorite fix. Turn off power at the circuit panel, then grab something with a wooden handle, like a broomstick or plunger. Insert the handle into the disposal from the top, place it against one of the blades, and try to turn it clockwise. Then reset the unit as above and test. If neither method works, turn off power to the unit again and look inside the disposal to see if anything is blocking the blades, like a metal utensil or a large object like a bone or avocado seed. Carefully remove any such object and test again. And if all else fails, you may need to replace the entire unit. If so, look for one that has a motor with at least 1/2 horsepower, overload protection and a self-reverse feature to reduce jamming. HOME TIP: To keep your disposal smelling clean, grind up a few lemon or lime peels in it periodically. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. My new e-book, “101 Best Home Tips,” is available to download on Amazon Kindle! Pick it up it today for just 99 cents.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Oct. 17, 1906, Wilhelm Voigt, a German shoemaker, impersonates an army officer and leads an entire squad of soldiers to help him steal 4,000 marks. Voigt humiliated the German army by exploiting their blind obedience to authority and getting them to assist in his audacious robbery. • On Oct. 15, 1917, Mata Hari is executed for espionage by a French firing squad. Her military trial was riddled with bias and circumstantial evidence, and it is probable that French authorities trumped her up as “the greatest woman spy of the century” as a distraction for the huge losses the French army was suffering. • On Oct. 14, 1947, U.S. Air Force Capt. Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. Yeager’s X-1 rocket plane was lifted to an altitude of 25,000 feet by a B-29 aircraft and then released through the bomb bay. • On Oct. 16, 1958, Chevrolet begins to sell the El Camino, a combination sedan-pickup truck. In 1964, the company introduced a version built on the brawnier Chevelle platform. Today, the car is a cult classic. • On Oct. 20, 1962, the White House press corps is told that President John F. Kennedy has a cold; in reality, he is holding secret meetings with advisers on the eve of ordering a blockade of Cuba. Kennedy had seen photographic proof that the Soviets were building ballistic missile sites on the island of Cuba. • On Oct. 18, 1974, soul singer Al Green is attacked in his own bathtub when an ex-girlfriend pours a pot of scalding-hot grits on his back. Her actions left Green with severe injuries but also shaken emotionally and spiritually. By 1976, Green had become an ordained Baptist minister and purchased a Memphis church, where he still preaches today. • On Oct. 19, 1982, maverick automobile executive John DeLorean is arrested in a Los Angeles motel with a briefcase containing $24 million worth of cocaine. Jestina will be competing, for her share of thousands of dollars in prizes and specialty gifts that will be distributed to contestants. Jestina will be competing in the Miss Pre-Teen division, one of four divisions that will have young ladies ages of 7 and 19 competing in modeling routines, which include casual wear and formal wear. Most important, Jestina will display her personality and interviewing skills while interviewing with this year's Denver/Colorado Springs judging panel. Personality is the number one aspect that each contestant is judged on during all phases of competition. If Jestina were to win the title of Miss Pre-Teen Denver/Colorado Springs, she would represent Denver/ Colorado Springs and the surrounding communities at the National Competition that will take place in Orlando, Florida. Over $30,000.00 in prizes and awards will be presented at the National Competition while each winner enjoys this expense paid trip of five nights and six days in Orlando, Florida. Community businesses, organizations, and private individuals will assist Jestina in participating in this year's competition by becoming an official sponsor to her. Through sponsorship, each contestant receives all the necessary training, rehearsals, and financial support which will allow Jestina to become a very confident and well-prepared contestant in this year's Denver/Colorado Springs Pageant. Any business, organization, or private individual who may be interested in becoming a sponsor to Jestina may contact the Miss Pre-Teen Denver/Colorado Springs pageant coordinator, at 1-877-403-6678.

www.ILoveTidbits.com STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver • It was Albert Einstein who made the following sage observation: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” • Many people believe that one should never remove one’s wedding ring. However, one superstition holds that doing so is perfectly acceptable -- as long as the ring is being used to ward off a witch. • There’s nothing surprising about the fact that upon the death of British novelist, poet and essayist D.H. Lawrence, the author’s body was cremated. What is unusual is that, at Lawrence’s request, his ashes were mixed into the plaster used to build the D.H. Lawrence Ranch in Questa, N.M. • As Halloween approaches, if you live in New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Iowa, you might want to keep in mind your state’s tax policy. If you’re buying a pumpkin to carve into a jack-o’-lantern, you’ll need to pay tax on the gourd. Pumpkins used for food purposes, however, are subject to no such tax. • In 2009, a Saudi couple who had spent their honeymoon in Malaysia encountered difficulty on the return flight home. It seems that the groom felt the bride was taking too long in the airport restroom, so he boarded the flight back to Saudi Arabia before she did. When he allowed the plane to leave without her, she insisted on an immediate divorce. • The next time you’ve enjoyed a happy hour out with friends, you might want to consider the virtually unknown adjective “gambrinous,” which means “to be content and happy due to a stomach full of beer.” *** Thought for the Day: “My advice to you is to get married. If you find a good wife, you’ll be happy; if not, you’ll become a philosopher.” -- Socrates (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

How Should Your Risk Tolerance Influence Investment Decision? As an investor, how much risk can you tolerate? It’s an important question — because the answer can help you make the right investment choices. Before you know your risk tolerance, you’ll want to make sure you first understand the nature of investment risk — the risk of losing principal. This risk is especially prevalent when you invest Cindy Rose in stocks, because stock prices will always fluctuate — and there are never any guarantees about performance. Of course, a decline in value does not mean you need to sell; you can always hold on to the stock with the hope that its value will bounce back. And this can certainly happen, but again — no guarantees.

How you respond to this type of investment risk will tell you a great deal about your own risk tolerance. Of course, no one, whether he or she has a high tolerance for risk or a low one, particularly likes to see declines. But people do react differently. If you’re the sort of person who can retain your confidence in your investment mix and can focus on the long term and the potential for a recovery, you may well have a higher tolerance for risk. But if you find yourself losing sleep over your losses (even if, at this point, they’re just “paper” losses), becoming despondent about reaching your goals, and questioning whether you should be investing at all, then you may have a low tolerance for risk. This self-knowledge of your own risk tolerance should help inform your investment decisions — to a point. Even if you determine you have a high tolerance for risk, you almost certainly should not load up your portfolio exclusively with stocks. If the stock market enters a prolonged slump, you could face heavy losses that may take many years to overcome, causing you to lose significant ground in the pursuit of your financial goals. Conversely, even if you discover you don’t have much tolerance for risk, you won’t want to invest only in supposedly “safe” vehicles, such as certificates of deposit (CDs). During those periods when rates on CDs and similar instruments are low, as has been the case in recent years, your interest payments from these investments may not even keep up with inflation — meaning that, over time, you could end up losing purchasing power, which, over the long term, can be just as big a risk as market declines. Ultimately, then, you’ll probably want to let your risk tolerance guide your investment choices — but not dictate them with an “iron hand.” So, if you believe you are highly tolerant of risk, you might have a somewhat higher percentage of stocks in your portfolio than if you felt yourself to be highly risk-averse — but in any case, you’ll likely benefit from building a diversified portfolio containing stocks, bonds, government securities, CDs and other investments. While this type of diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss, it can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. By knowing your own risk tolerance, and the role it can play in your choices, you can help yourself create an effective, suitable investment strategy — one that you can live with for a long time and that can help you avoid the biggest risk of all: not reaching your longterm goals.
