• You might think cheeseburgers have been around just as long as hamburgers, but not so! In the late 1700s, German sailors and immigrants brought the “Hamburg Steak” (an entrée with origins in Hamburg, Germany) to New York City. The meat patty between two pieces of bread was a popular item along the New York harbor.

The city’s famous Delmonico’s Restaurant featured a hamburger on their menu in 1834. The hamburger made its way out west, appearing on the menu of San Fernando, California’s Clipper restaurant from 1872 to 1884. Yet it seems that the hamburger didn’t look like it does today until 1891, when Oscar Bilby served burgers on a bun.

The 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair gave the hamburger widespread attention.

The first records of cheeseburgers were in the 1920s. A Pasadena restaurant, the Rite Spot, claimed it was the first to serve a cheeseburger in 1926, when the owner’s 16-year-old son came up with the idea. A 1928 menu from a Los Angeles restaurant called O’Dell’s has a cheeseburger listed. Kaelin’s Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky, says they invented the item in 1934.

But the first person to apply for use of the word “cheeseburger” as a trademark was Louis Ballast of Denver’s Humpty Dumpty Drive-In. Ballast registered the name in 1935 and was awarded a trademark, but never made any claims on it.

Steak ‘n Shake claims their restaurant’s founder, Gus Belt, was the first to apply for a trademark in the 1930s.

Jimmy Buffett’s popular 1978 hit “Cheeseburger in Paradise” led to a chain of successful restaurants. The song was inspired by a boat trip gone bad taken by Buffett and friends. Bad weather prevented the boat from landing as planned, and Buffett was forced to subsist on canned food and peanut butter, while constantly craving a cheeseburger. When he finally landed on the island of Tortola, his cravings were finally satisfied. There are now 19 Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurants, although Buffett divested himself of his financial interest in the chain in 2012.

Ray Kroc was already in his late 50’s when he bought the McDonald’s company from the two McDonald brothers in 1961. Now the most successful fast food chain in the world, more than 75 burgers are sold every second of every day worldwide. McDonald’s hires about a million workers in America every year; in fact, about one in every eight American workers has been employed by McDonald’s at one time or another.

Five and a half million head of cattle are needed to prepare the burgers served at the restaurants in one year.

In 1967, McDonald’s introduced “two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun,” the ever popular Big Mac. This cheeseburger with a middle slice of bread to help prevent spillage had two previous names, the Aristocrat and the Blue Ribbon Burger. When neither name seemed to catch on, a 21-year-old secretary in McDonald’s corporate advertising department, Esther Glickstein Rose, came up with the name Big Mac. The burger made its debut in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, with a selling price of 45 cents. By the following year, all the McDonald’s restaurants had added it to their menu.

Of the more than 13,000 Burger Kings in 79 countries, about 66% of those are in the United States. More than 11 million people eat at a Burger King somewhere in the world every day.

The world’s third largest hamburger chain, BK got its start in Miami, Florida in 1953 as InstaBurger King. The Whopper was added to the menu in 1957.

Counting your calories? A Burger King cheeseburger has 360, and McDonald’s has 313.

If you want a McD’s double cheeseburger, you’ll consume 459 calories. There are 550 calories in a Big Mac in the United States. In the United Kingdom, that burger is worth only 490 calories, while in Malaysia that number is 484. The lowest Big Mac calorie count is found in Chile at 478, with Japan have the highest at 557. It takes about 153 minutes of brisk walking to burn off the calories contained in a Big Mac. A slice of cheddar cheese adds about 113 calories to an ordinary burger.

In case an ordinary cheeseburger isn’t your “cup of tea,” the Texas-based restaurant chain known as the Twisted Root Burger Company offers a variety of unusual game burgers, including venison, kangaroo, beaver, ostrich, emu, boar, alligator, and camel burgers.

How about a cheeseburger that uses glazed doughnuts in place of a bun? Nicknamed The Luther after singer/songwriter Luther Vandross, who had a weakness for this burger, it can total between 800 and 1,500 calories. You can cut the caloric intake by eliminating the chocolatecovered bacon.

In order to approximate nature as closely as possible, consider what your cat would eat if he didn’t have you to provide for him. His ideal diet would consist of various small rodents, birds, and even a few gourmet insects!

Then think about what rodents and birds are made of.

There’s muscle, fat, bone, skin, fur, feathers, beaks, and then of course the various internal organs. That’s a balanced diet for a cat, with a LOT of variety! Variety is a positive. And the “by-products” provide vitamins, minerals and nutrition that muscle and organ meat alone cannot.

Another important bit of information about your domestic cat’s ancestry: This is a dehydrated species that originally inhabited the deserts of Asia and North Africa. Urine is a concentrate of metabolic waste, and even today, the domestic cat produces urine that is three times more concentrated than the human.

Finally, the cat is an obligate carnivore, --a species that depends solely on animal flesh and organs for its energy and nutrient requirements. Cats lack the physiology required to efficiently digest vegetable matter.

Why, then, do we feed our domestic cats dry kibble with corn and rice in it? We’ll talk about that next week, and we’ll talk about how we cat owners can do a better job of providing good nutrition for our cats.

Tomatoes aren't ripening as usual This summer's weather pattern has definitely caused problems in our gardens.

Is there anything we can do?

You can be patient and hope the soil eventually warms up.

But if you want those yummy vine-ripened tomatoes sooner and are willing to put in a bit of effort over the holiday weekend, there are a couple of things you can do to help Mother Nature warm up the soil: Cover soil around plants with black plastic - which some gardeners do in the early spring to warm soil after the winter's chill. During the day the sun will heat the plastic and the soil underneath.

As long as low evening temps continue, cover tomato plants with a frost shield fabric overnight to hold the daytime heat in. If you don't have frost shield, use the same materials you use to protect plants against frost later in the season.

Household items such as sheets or large towels will also do the job.

Can you pick tomatoes to ripen them?

You can pick green tomatoes now just like you would right before frost.

Bring them indoors and place them on window sill.

Or stack them in a cardboard box 2-3 layers deep. Use newspapers between the layers.

Green tomatoes that are picked and brought indoors will ripen and turn red. But they won't get any more sugar content after picking so they will not be as sweet as the vine-ripened variety. The longer plants stay on the vine, the sweeter they will be.

What about mildew?

The other weather-related problem is mildew on impatiens and in some gardens, it is showing up earlier than usual on squash and pumpkins. White blotches appear on the leaves.

You can prune away leaves with mildew from impatiens and hope to enjoy the flowers a bit longer in porch and patio containers. For squash plants in the garden, leaves with mildew can also be removed. When the weather pattern shifts to bring more sunshine along with good air circulation, conditions may improve.

Compost pile warning Avoid putting any pruning debris that has mildew - or any other disease - into the compost pile. Instead, place the debris in a bag and discard it with other trash. Compost piles are not hot enough to kill fungus and other diseases.

Placing diseased plant material into compost will damage the compost and only perpetuate the problems.
