a un popular productor y conductor de un programa de investigaciones que se distinguía por su particular forma de despedirse. En cada despedida dejaba la sensación de que nunca más tendríamos la oportunidad de reencontrarnos, una sensación que dejada incluso en sus compañeros de jornada.

Recientemente, en la juramentación del nuevo presidente de los Estados Unidos, vimos cómo en la histórica actividad el saliente George W. Bush, fue abucheado por una gran cantidad de personas. Por supuesto que la relevancia histórica y lo emotivo del evento ha dejado este acontecimiento como un hecho aislado y, en cierta medida, justo; dado las situaciones desagradables que tuvimos que experimentar gracias a la mala gestión del Sr. W. Bush. Es probable que para el presidente saliente la forma como fue despedido del cargo público más importante de cualquier nación, no tenga importancia. A mí particularmente me deja como lección que no basta con iniciar, saber terminar y lo que hacemos en el trayecto es lo más importante. No necesariamente tenemos que ser presidentes o ocupar posiciones relevantes, sea cual sea nuestro rol en la vida, nuestras acciones deben escribir las palabras finales que deseamos lean en nuestra lápida. Si le correspondiera a la historia escribir lo que dirá la lápida del ex presidente Bush probablemente se escriba; “Aquí yace el peor presidente de Estados Unidos”. Tal vez, amparado en esa premisa el productor y conductor al que me referí al iniciar este escrito, trataba de dejar su mejor imagen; aunque habría que saber si vive de acuerdo a como quiere ser recordado; de no ser así, su característica despedida no podrá cambiar nada. Este mes recibimos con mucho entusiasmo al Dr. Roberto González, uno de los más prestigiosos juristas del Estado; quien a partir de esta edición nos ofrecerá una columna de temas relacionados con la inmigración. A partir de esta edición nuestros lectores podrán disfrutar de interesantes y novedosos contenidos, como son nuestros segmentos “Al Día”, “Destinos”, además estarán al tanto de eventos relevantes del ámbito nacional. knew a popular producer and director of an investigative program who distinguished himself by his particular way of saying goodbye. At every parting, he left the feeling that we would never again have the opportunity to meet, a feeling that was felt by all his companions during the day. Recently, at the historical inauguration of the new president of the United States, we saw how the outgoing George W. Bush was jeered by a great number of people. Of course, the historical importance and overall emotion of the event minimized this happening to an isolated and, in certain measures, justified act, given the unpleasant situations we have had to experience thanks to the poor management of Mr. W. Bush. It’s likely that for the outgoing president, the way he was seen out of the most important public office of any nation is of no consequence. I myself am especially left with the lesson that it’s not enough to commence; to know how to finish and what we do along the way is more important. We do not necessarily have to be presidents or occupy prominent positions—whatever may be our roles in life, our actions must write the final words that we wish to read on our graves. If it were history’s job to engrave the tombstone of ex-president Bush, it would probably write, “Here lies the worst president of the United States.” Perhaps with this premise in mind, the producer and director to whom I referred at the beginning of this piece was trying to leave us with the best image of himself; although had he known that if he lived in accordance with how he wished to be remembered, his typical way of saying goodbye would not change at all. This month we enthusiastically welcome Dr. Roberto González, one of the most prestigious attorneys in Rhode Island, who will now on offer us a column on topics related to immigration. Beginning with this issue, our readers will be able to enjoy interesting and innovative content such as our new segments “Al Día” and “Destinos.” What’s more, you will be informed of national events. through motherhood was always a part of Vanessa Toledo’s dreams. Three years and nine months after having made the decision to become a mother, and after two frustrating attempts, life presented her with a new opportunity. La divertida comedia es dirigida por Francis Parra, Directora Artistica de ECAS Theater. Aunque la obra corresponde al siglo pasado, está vinculada con la vida actual. Tres Sombreros de Copa supone, por su originalidad, una ruptura completa con el teatro cómico del siglo pasado. La asociación inverosímil de situaciones, los diálogos poco lógicos y los juegos lingüísticos la aproximan al teatro vanguardista de Samuel Beckett o Ionesco. Tres sombreros de copa desarrolla el tema de la libertad alcanzada y perdida.

The play elapses in a single scenic space -a room of hotel- and in a single night, the eve of the marriage between Dionisio and a virtuous young lady. This night will be the one that discover to Dionisio that perhaps the marriage be not the life that desires. When, drunk, immersed in the dance that is organized in its room, surrounded by unusual personages, exclaims “I never have been so happy,” we realize the fragility of the road of the marriage in which is going to embark. Funny and passionate, Tres Sombreros awake the bittersweet flavor that leaves a humor that only tries to camouflage the bitterness of the life of its personages.

Una relación de pareja inicia con
sentimientos de atracción mutua. En un momento particular de sus vidas comparten gustos, ideas y valores, así como conflictos y anhelos. En la etapa inicial se suele tener cuidado con los detalles, cada encuentro llena a la pareja de ilusión y felicidad; esos agradables momentos inundan los instantes en que la otra persona no está, nutriendo y potenciando la relación. En el proceso se viven muchas etapas. Si bien es importante el amor, también el compromiso, responsabilidad y respeto mutuo, tiene mucho que ver con el fortalecimiento de la relación. All of these factors are paramount to the strength of a relationship. But as we all know, love isn’t always rosy. Couples have rough spots—even crises. It all depends on what the couple is willing to do to save the relationship. A crisis is an invitation to seek new points of connection. It demands transformation, since doing nothing to resolve it will result in destruction. It’s an invitation to say what you should and to restore lost intimacy and creativity. You must invent the relationship every day, creating dynamics that maintain the interest and motivation to conquer daily problems and challenges together with sensible and mature solutions, setting aside pride and rancor.

lares de mi abuela cuando enfrentaba adversidad en la vida. Es un mensaje de esperanza pero también habla acerca del hecho de que todo problema eventualmente pasa a ser parte de la historia. Durante la inauguración del Presidente Barack Obama el saliente, George W. Bush, fue abucheado y maltratado por el público debido a su mala administración. No hay que ser liberal ni conservador para saber que la historia condenará a este individuo como uno de los peores presidentes. Su decisión de atacar a Iraq, el uso de tortura y la todavía viva recesión económica, son manchas indelebles en la solapa del que dijo que si no estábamos con él, estábamos con los terroristas. Aquel que piensa que la posición de presidente es inconsecuente le convendría estudiar los últimos 8 años. El efecto no es solo político, sino sicológico. El sábado después de la inauguración salí con mi familia a celebrar el cumpleaños de mi hijo mayor, y en el medio de la recesión económica más grande en nuestra generación, no pudimos encontrar un restaurante que no tuviese una espera de más de 45 minutos. ¿Cómo es posible (me pregunte yo) que cuando tenemos un desempleo de 10% en RI haya tanta gente comiendo fuera? La respuesta la vi en las caras de los usuarios que se veían felices y tranquilos frente a una economía en crisis. Todo el mundo hablaba acerca de la inauguración y el hecho de que había regresado la esperanza a l país y al mundo, y de que a pesar de la crisis era evidente que todo había cambiado de color y que estábamos como cuando Reagan, amaneciendo en América. Estará amaneciendo pero no sabemos si lo que viene es el sol o más nubes en el horizonte. A pesar de su destreza con sus discursos el presidente va a tener que forjar una coalición bipartidista para poder manejar eficientemente este gobierno. Aun cuando sabemos que ganó con una gran mayoría, no existe una mayoría absoluta en el Congreso para poder aprobar todos sus ideas. La crisis a la que estamos enfrentando es una crisis global que tomo muchos años en ser creada, y no se va a solucionar en unos cuantos meses. Los EU dependerán de

la cooperación de las economías y gobiernos internacionales, y estos tienen sus propios constituyentes a los que hay que complacer. Impulsos nacionalistas aquí y en el extranjero amenazan reducir la voluntad política creada por la globalización, y podrían detener el avance hacia reformas migratorias y tratados de libre comercio, a medida que ambos movimientos siguen su inexorable destino de crear un solo mercado mundial. Finalmente es la eterna batalla entre la autocracia y la democracia lo que definirá el próximo término. Los gobiernos capitalistas de Europa y América nacionalizan bancos y se apoderan de amplios segmentos del mercado de valores, a la misma vez que los comunistas y los socialistas expanden la propiedad privada, liberalizan sus mercados y venden Coca Cola como si hubiese sido creada por Marx o Fidel Castro. El mundo entero se está moviendo hacia el centro político ya que ambos extremos han demostrado su ineficiencia y su incapacidad de continuar avanzando el bienestar económico de los pueblos. Obama debe reconocer estos cambios y navegarlos cuidadosamente. Porque“No por mucho madrugar, amanece más temprano”

During Barack Obama’s inauguration the outgoing president was booed by the audience as a result of the general perception of his administration as an incompetent one. You do not have to be a liberal or a conservative to know that history will judge him as one of the worst presidents ever. His decision to attack Iraq, the use of torture and the still ever present recession, are indelible marks on the lapel of the man who said that we were either with him or with the terrorists. Those of you who feel that the position of president is inconsequential should study the last 8 years. His effect was not just political but psychological as well.

How is it possible (I said to myself ) that in this climate of 10% unemployment everyone is out to eat? The answer was in the faces of the patrons that appeared happy and relaxed in spite of a sad economy. Everyone was talking about the inauguration and the fact that hope had sprung anew in the country and the world. It was evident that it was like Reagan’s “morning in America” once again. Dawn may be approaching but we are not sure if what’s coming in the horizon is the sun or more clouds. In spite of his great powers of oratory the new president will need to build a bipartisan coalition in order to manage efficiently his mandate. Even though he won by a wide margin he still faces a divided Congress and his ideas may face difficult times ahead. This crisis took a long time to build and it will not go away in just a few months. The US depends on the cooperation of foreign economies and governments whose own constituencies demand to be pleased. Nationalistic impulses here and abroad threaten a reduction in the political will created by globalization, which could derail immigration reform and free markets treaties as these move inexorably towards the creation of a single world market. Finally it is the eternal battle between autocracy and democracy what will mark the next term. The capitalist societies of Europe and America will nationalize banks and will take over large segments of the market, as the communists and socialists expand private ownership, liberalize markets and sell Coca Cola like it was a product of Marx or Fidel Castro. The World is moving towards the political center since both extremes have failed to keep prosperity going. Obama needs to recognize these trends and sail these waters carefully. Because “An early rise does not change the time it dawns”

Will there be Immigration Reform in 2009?

economía es difícil recordar la última vez que el Presidente Barack Obama hizo referencia a inmigración — una cuestión de campaña que él prometió abordar en su primer año en el poder. Sin embargo, los activistas a ambos lados del intenso debate migratorio todavía están aun preparando para la batalla política. Los defensores de los inmigrantes se han hecho una promesa a sí mismos: mantener a Obama responsable de sus promesas de campaña. Al otro lado de la cerca, tenemos activistas presionando por restricciones migratorias en base a su resentimiento por sus pérdidas electorales, pero al mismo tiempo permanecen optimistas de la grave situación económica ya que impedirá la elaboración de un programa masivo de amnistía aceptable por el público en general. Los dirigentes nacionales defensores de los inmigrantes han dicho que ellos esperarán con paciencia mientras Obama tiene cuidado del desastre económico, pero que ellos no quieren dejar que la crisis ponga a un lado la cuestión. Nada específico se ha discutido aún respecto a los puntos concretos que una nueva reforma migratoria contendría, pero los defensores concuerdan que para una reforma de inmigración sea eficaz, ésta debe arreglar todas las partes rotas. Los defensores de imponer restricciones migratorias cuentan con que mientras Obama desee encontrar apoyo para algunas medidas con una buena posibilidad de pasar en el Congreso, no hay ningún modo que él aspirare obtener una amnistía masiva. Ellos creen que Obama “cometería un suicidio político” si tratara de legalizar a millones de trabajadores no autorizados con tantos ciudadanos americanos desempleados. Sin duda habrá una lucha. En mi opinión, durante los primeros meses de la administración Obama veremos algunas concesiones inmediatas, como utilización de su discreción presidencial para reducir las incursiones de inmigración que se han venido dando sin precedentes y que aun están en marcha. Esto servirá como un pago al contado para asegurar a la gente que él está haciendo lo mejor que puede, bajo circunstancias normales. Antes del final de este año, las ofertas más próximas deberían pasar, como: el Acto de SUEÑO,

dando a no menos de 1 millón de estudiantes que están en el país ilegalmente una posibilidad de ir a la universidad o afiliarse a las fuerzas militares y finalmente obtener la residencia permanente; y, AGJOBS, una reforma que crea un nuevo programa de trabajador agrícola temporal. Finalmente, antes del final de 2010, realmente creo que tendremos la Reforma de Inmigración Completa.

Immigration by their electoral losses but remain optimistic that hard economic times will impede making a mass amnesty program palatable to the general public. Leading national immigrant advocates said they’ll wait patiently while Obama takes care of the economic mess, but they’re not willing to let the crisis push the issue aside. No specifics have yet been discussed as to what a new immigration bill would contain, but advocates agree that to be effective, immigration reform must fix all the broken parts. Immigration restrictionist advocates counter that while Obama may be willing to risk backing some measures with a good chance of passing Congress, there’s no way he’ll try for mass amnesty. They believe that Obama would “commit political suicide” if he tried to legalize millions of unauthorized workers with so many Americans out of work. No doubt there will be a fight. In my opinion, during the first few months of the Obama administration we will see some immediate concessions, such as Obama using presidential discretion to slow the unprecedented and ongoing series of immigration raids. This will serve as a down payment to assure people he’s doing his best under current circumstances. Alright, so like many of you, my wife and I agree and disagree on a million things. We can go back and forth on a slew of topics from our take on the bible to my dreams about Jenny Lo. However, nowhere are we more in a comedic divide than when it comes to how we handle the upbringing of our kids. First and foremost, let me preface today’s column by sharing that we have three beautiful, somewhat normal niños (two teenage boys and a ten year old daughter) who are very well mannered, well-behaved, caring, easy going, and driven. They are outstanding students, practical jokers, and have developed a great sense of humor. And while we are okay with taking some of the credit (I take most), we both realize how blessed we are to have the wonderful teachers and adults that have come in and out of their lives.

Now, my wife and I literally grew up on the same street in NYC. We mingled with the same friends, ate at the same Cuchifritos, and dealt with very similar social conditions. And so it blows my mind that we pulled such different lessons from our experiences. The same lessons we now apply to our everyday lives. The overall picture goes as follows; she is an incredibly attentive and nurturing mommy with a “performance deserves reward” system especially around Christmas time. I am also nurturing and attentive, but my style is more along the lines of “no matter how well you performed, there is no reason on earth why you would need ANOTHER gaming console en esta casa.” As the caring and wonderful flower that she is, my super-mom-esposa is always dashing out of work, flying through traffic, and pulling up on two wheels in front of their schools so no one has to walk home in the rain.
This is not about corporal punishment. That’s not my style and mi correa only holds up my pants (which seem a little tighter these days). The fear I speak of has to do with the boundaries and consistency in consequences I have layed down. But, just out of curiosity we made a little bet and posed the question to our kids. Did they respect us or fear us? Their answers surprised us both and I will share them with you in March.
My last example is perhaps my favorite in this parental tug of war with my wife. She feels that kids should respect their parents, not fear them. A belief I agree with whole-heartedly. She, however, insists that they respect her but fear me. My father had a cool thing he would say which was “kids have to fear something. A fearless child is a child heading for trouble.” So I have no problem with being feared, but before you go calling DCYF on me, allow me a brief clarification.

Social, hemos experimentado como nación un cambio monumental. El 20 de enero, todos en nuestro país, y en el mundo entero, acogimos la inauguración de un nuevo Presidente Americano como nunca antes. Una mirada a nuestros vecindarios revela la terrible realidad que el numero creciente de embargos hipotecarios priva a las personas de la capacidad de permanecer como propietarios y a que los arrendatarios terminen en la calle. La crisis de embargos hipotecarios es una tragedia que debe de ser detenida para evitar más daño y destrucción. La enmienda que hemos propuesto es un planteamiento prudente para aliviar esta crisis y proteger a más personas. También soy uno de los procuradores generales pertenecientes al acuerdo con Dell, Inc. Bajo dicho acuerdo, Dell proporcionará reembolso a los clientes quienes tengan problemas con las promociones, ofertas de rebaja, ayuda técnica y políticas de reparación de dicha empresa. Consumidores de Rhode Island han experimentado dificultades significantes de parte del departamento de servicio al consumidor de Dell. Otros aplicaron por financiamiento de cero por ciento de interés pero en lugar fueron sorprendidos con tasas de interés mucho más altas.

The foreclosure crisis is a tragedy that must be contained to stem outrageous damage and destruction. We’ve experienced a monumen-
tal change, as a nation, since my last column appeared in Tiempo Social. On January 20th, our country, and the world, embraced the inauguration of a new American President as never before. In order to provide a wonderful venue in which people could come together to celebrate this historic and groundbreaking moment, I invited the general public to join me at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC), to bear witness to Barack Obama becoming our 44th President. More than 2,500 people packed PPAC to do just that! To the readers of
this publication who watched with us at PPAC—to welcome our new leader, and to rejoice—many thanks! Last month, 22 attorneys general and I called on the leadership of the United States House and Senate, urging that the U.S. Bankruptcy Code be amended to permit federal Bankruptcy Courts to protect families from foreclosure. A look at our neighborhoods reveals all too painfully that the record number of foreclosures is robbing people of the ability to remain as homeowners and causing tenants to be tossed out on the streets. The foreclosure crisis is a tragedy that must be contained to stem outrageous damage and destruction. Our proposed amendment is a sensible approach to help alleviate this crisis and protect countless more people from being victimized. I am also one of the attorneys general who has entered into an agreement with Dell, Inc. under which Dell will provide restitution to customers who had problems with the company’s financing promotions, rebate offers, technical support, and repair policies. Rhode Island consumers have experienced significant customer service abuses by Dell. Others applied for zeropercent financing but were instead ambushed by much higher interest rates. Any Rhode Island consumer with a valid complaint about a Dell product or service purchased between April 1, 2005 and April 13, 2009, may be eligible for restitution. The deadline for filing a claim is April 13th of this year. For information, or help in filing a claim, call my Consumer Protection Unit at 274-4400, pressing “3” for Spanish or “1” for English, and then pressing “1.”

DeSDe la década de los 80’s la Polaroit lanzó al mercado una cámara fotográfica
de revelado instantáneo que dejó de fabricar el año pasado, tanto la calidad de las imágenes como la manejabilidad de la cámara complicaban el proceso.
La misma casa Polaroit anuncia que en el mes de abril tendremos a mano la versión digital del la 5 MP de resolución, una cámara que imprimirá la imagen al minuto de ser tomada la foto. El nombre de la cámara es PoGo, y se venderá en los Estados Unidos al precio de 200. A diferencia de su predecesora, que revelaba las fotos mediante un proceso de reacción química, incluirá una impresora en miniatura para imprimir imágenes de un tamaño de 5 por 7,5 centímetros. El papel especial sobre las que se imprimen se puede desprender para convertirlas en una pegatina, que se adhiere a la puerta del frigorífico, un libro, un PC o cualquier otra superficie.
