ho: Singer/Songwriter/Performer is my Full Time passion; Marketing, Public Relations Manager my career.
What: Currently in the Studio working on my EP and collaborating with some local talent such as SingerSongwriter Cesar Santana, Producer/Engineer Kenny “Merc” Mercado and amazing musicians both locally and nationally. The EP will be a fusion of different types of genres. I’d say my music is very melodic, raw, soulful and eclectic; it carries a lot of feeling. I am also working on some projects in Colombia with Producer, Song-writer/ Engineer Dario Valenzuela “El Brujo de La Consola” who has worked with fantastic artists such as Grupo Niche, Dario Gomez, Binomio de Oro, Jorge Celedón to name few and Producer/Engineer Diego Juanias. I am hoping to finish the EP mid this year and share it with all my supporters.
When: Since I can remember... I’d throw on whatever rags were around, put on my mom’s stilettos, make her brush or the mop my microphone and just start singing and dancing all over the house. I always wanted to be in the spot light and was always the center of attention anywhere we went. Seeing how much I loved singing and dancing, my parents (whom 8 tS MAGAZINE MAR-APR 2013
I adore and am so grateful for) worked their butts off to put me in dance lessons, piano lessons, modeling, I mean anything that had to do with arts I was in it. My favorite child hood memory is when I was about 8 years old and my parents bought me my first Karaoke Machine (2 cassette decks to play or RECORD and 2 microphones) that’s when I’d say I started recording. That’s when music and I became the best of friends. Where: Music is who I am I take that everywhere. Why: Music, Writing, Singing, Performing, it’s my passion. I crave it, I enjoy it, it makes me whole, it gives an opportunity to vent, to share and feel, it fulfills me and surely something I never ever want to be without. There’s a story behind every song I write. I look at it like I’m the “BOOK” and my songs are chapters of my life that are being written. I write about my life, relationships, feelings, people I meet, things I see and experiences I “borrow” from friends. My music reflects exactly how I feel and who I am… it’s about transparency, honesty, my journey in life and just very very raw feelings. www.facebook.com/yesseniarubiomusic/www.yesseniarubio.com

ho: Fredy G Bermudez-Trejos Donahue aka Dj Mambo What: Disc Jockey/Bilingual Master of Ceremony
When: I started about 15 years ago with a company called Rolling Thunder Light and Sound founded by Tony Felix. Through Tony’s music appreciation classes, I obtained a great musical foundation in both American and Latino music; Tony is a great MC. As the years passed and the company grew, Tony realized that he needed more MC’s and started training me. I took what he taught me and applied it in Spanish. Where: You name it, I’ve done it: Latin and English night clubs, sweet 15’s, proms, concerts, radio, and the one place where I’ve had the most success in, weddings. Why: Because I love music and love to see people enjoy the music I play, especially when I play that certain song that brings you back to a pleasant time and it makes you reminisce. That look on people’s faces never gets boring. The other reason why I dj is because it has opened doors to my other passion in life of dancing and teaching people how to dance. When people contract me for a quinceañera and find out that I’m also a dance teacher, they naturally me ask to put together the choreography for the sweet 15 court. Finally, I do it for my daughter. She’s been my inspiration in life and djing has provided some financial backings. To those who are single parents you know that kids get more expensive as they get older and you want to give them what they want. Sometimes, that means taking on a second or third job. Luckily djing has been that second job for me. At first djing was something that I did for fun and later it became a way to provide. http://www.facebook.com/MusicAsylumDJs MAR-APR 2013 tS MAGAZINE

Qué ver larry crowne Tom Hanks y Julia Roberts
E

am so blessed to do something I love for a living. Every client comes with different challenges and a unique palette. But from all my requests, I love when they ask me to make them look younger and fresher.
These days women have become busier and more accomplished and on top of it all we have to look beautiful and feminine while we are at it. I mean, seriously, what women have time to sleep extra hours and actually get rest? So let’s talk about my favorite steps and tricks to a younger and more rested face! Your makeup is only as good as your skin. You must maintain your skin with a weekly mask or peel. You work hard; you deserve to pamper yourself for at least 15 minutes a week. Washing, treating and protecting your face every day is very important to preserve youth. Use a facial wash to remove impurities and makeup morning and night. Treat your skin with a serum that targets your particular concern such as lines, sun damage, and dehydration. And now for the fun stuff, makeup: Use a illuminating liquid foundation, it should give you a glow. The plan is to look like you when you were 15… those were the days. Use a smoothing and brightening congealer around your eyes, nose, and lips. You want to create brightness were there are shadows. For eyes using matt or satin shadows are recommended, it creates a smoother lid. A bright neutral color all over and a darker color near your lid. Finish the eyes with a waterproof liquid liner and voluminous mascara. More on top and less on bottom is a way to create a lift to the eyes. As you get older, bottom liner is more likely to run. One of my favorite, bronzer! Use the bronzer on the sides of the face with upward strokes. Everyone’s face is shaped differently; place it on areas you would like to recess. Avoid the center of face, which should stay bright. Blush should be light and soft. Peach/ pinks with no glitter looks like a fresh natural glow. And please ladies only on the cheeks; red in other places may make you look tired. Last but definitely not the least important, lip plumper. Find one that has a tint of glossy color. Plumbers make your lips look healthy, smooth and hydrated. I promise, even if your lips are big, you’re going to want to kiss your own lips. Start with what you’re comfortable. Practice a day you’re not actually going anywhere. With a little practice, you will be ready to look younger and fresher! Model: Ebelise Abreu Photographer: Valencio

ts magazine: How would you define yourself? Gina Raimondo: I am a public servant. As a Rhode Islander, a mom, daughter, businesswoman and elected official – my story, our story, doesn’t happen without government working. My office is committed to moving Rhode Island forward. tS: An important childhood memory? G.R.: One of my favorite memories was being a Brownie in the Girl Scouts. It was through this after-school activity that I learned about leadership and friendship. Recently, I was named the Honorary Cookie Chair for the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island. Helping Rhode Islanders better manage their finances has been one of my top
priorities. Girls learn essential life skills, like hard work and the importance of financial literacy, through the cookie sale program. It is an honor to again be a working with the Girl Scouts and encouraging the girls as they work toward their goals. tS: Your husband’s name? G.R.: Andy Moffit tS: What type of profession your husband works at? G.R.: Andy works at the consulting firm McKinsey & Co. focusing on education issues.

tS: What phase of your life are you at this moment? G.R.: A very busy and rewarding one! I am a mom of two young children, a daughter, a wife and Rhode Island’s General Treasurer. tS: How has your life changed since you became RI Treasurer? G.R.: The biggest change is that I am often in the news. It’s a very visible role – people seem to recognize me everywhere – at church, at Benny’s, at the playground and the beach. While this has been an adjustment, it is an honor to serve and work for the hardworking people of Rhode Island.
tS: You are a wife, a mother and a state official. How do you spend your time? G.R.: As wisely as I can. I am committed to this state and the time that it takes to deliver results for all Rhode Islanders. I am also committed to my family. Sometimes, my family is able to join me at work. Recently they joined me for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in Woonsocket, distributing toys to children at Providence’s South Side’s Christmas Celebration and marching alongside me in the Bristol 4th of July parade. I love having them with me. tS: Which one of these functions do you identify yourself the most?
G.R.: My focus is on how to make Rhode Island stronger. A Rhode Island that rewards people who work hard regardless of their background or income is one that will have a thriving economy. My office is committed to doing its part to help build an economy for all Rhode Islanders to succeed, and to benefit from growth. tS: If you wouldn’t be the RI Treasurer, what other profession would you like to be? G.R.: Prior to my role as Treasurer, I founded the state’s first venture capital firm, Point Judith Capital. I really enjoyed working with entrepreneurs to help them lay the foundation to grow their ideas and create prosperous businesses.
tS: As a woman with so many responsibilities is there room in your life for hobbies? G.R.: Most of my free time is spent with my kids. I love helping with spelling tests, watching swim class and just spending time with them. I also try to exercise a few times a week. tS: How would you define your experience as the RI Treasurer? G.R.: Our focus in Treasury is to provide exceptional, performance-based results. In the first two years of my term, we made tremendous improvements and are operating better and faster for you. We will continue to deliver outcomes for you by acting with urgency, search-
ing for innovative solutions, streamlining work and building partnerships. I am energized by the work we are doing and with your help and support, we can continue to move our state forward in a transformational way. Please reach out to let us know how we are doing and to share ideas on how we can improve. tS: Which one was the most challenging moment that you had to face up to now? G.R.: In 2011, we came together as a state to save the pension system for public employees, and in so doing fixed our fiscal fundamentals. The Rhode Island Retirement Security Act Provides peace of mind to public employees, Saves taxpayers $4 billion over the next two decades. Saves municipalities $1 billion over the next two decades. Provides predictability to municipalities and taxpayers. These were tough choices, but we are seeing the benefits, with savings to municipalities and improved performance in the bond markets. Our recent $81 million general obligation offering generated $200 million worth of demand, and will lower the cost to taxpayers. These bond proceeds will be used to complete vital projects such as road and school construction. tS: From 1 to 10 how would you evaluate your governance at the helm of the RI Treasury? G.R.: I strive to be a 10 every day in my work for Rhode Islanders. tS: Three goals that you would like to reach for the Latino/ Hispanic Community? G.R.: A top priority is for my office is to highlight the importance of being financially empowered. Far too many Rhode Islanders face challenges that might have been be avoided through a greater understanding of personal finance. If families are more financially stable at home, our entire state will benefit. Empower RI opportunities for you include: Are you making less than $50,000? G.R.: Join me in advocating for an end to pay day lending in Rhode Island. Far too many families are facing financial challenges that might be mitigated or avoided through a greater understanding of personal finance. Payday lending exploits that lack of understanding. CUERPO/BODY Rejuvenating for
Spring
T
he arrival of Spring is a very anticipated one. We anxiously await longer days with daylight sun and more favorable temperatures. The winter months can be the most stressful on our skin due to the cold weather, low humidity and high artificial heating temperatures. That can all lead to our skin becoming drier than usual, resulting in dull looking skin.

The best remedy for repairing the skin after the winter season is to exfoliate. Gently exfoliating the skin to remove dead skin a few times a month is ideal followed by a good moisturizer. There are many products which can be found specifically designed for exfoliating. Avoid products that contain ingredients such as emulsifiers which leaves a soapy residual on the skin causing even more dryness. The following ingredients signify the presence of emulsifiers: emulsifying wax, polysorbate, stearate, steareth, cetearyl, ceteareth, polyoxyethylene, polyethylene and polyethylene glycol, also known as PEG. Parabens are a class of chemicals used in beauty products which include: methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben and butylparaben ceteareth. Parabens have been found in breast tumor biopsies indicating and proving a correlation of the preservative with breast cancer. Some products also contain apricot and nut seed particles to give the sensation of a deep exfoliating wash. In reality those particles are harmful to the skin and cause small microscopic cuts to the skin. These cuts, although not visible, are big enough for bacteria to enter the skin. If it becomes difficult to find an exfoliating product that does not contain the harmful ingredients, the easy and affordable option is to make a homemade version. This facial softens and hydrates the skin while removing dead skin at the same time. Mix 2 tbsp honey, 1/2 cup oats, 1 large whole egg, 2 tsp granulated sugar, 1/4 cup milk and 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil. After washing your face with warn water to allow the pores to open, rub mixture on face and leave for 5 minutes. Gently massage mixture in a circular motion allowing the sugar to remove the dead skin. Wash off after 15-20 minutes.
IN MY SPANGLISH OPINION
Welfariano! Estas”Jodiendo”La Bicicleta (You’re screwing up the bike) VIC RAMOS
A
grumpy Cuban man from my neighborhood whom we called Hector, El Cubano, had a catch-phrase he would use for situations when a person was destroying the collaborative efforts of a group of people. He used it often and with great vigor when someone’s laziness was causing the others to force themselves. He would say “Estas jodiendo la bicileta” (you’re screwing up the bike). As a teenager, I distinctly remember a group of us trying to build a snowman on the street corner of 187th street and St. Nicholas Ave. There were at least ten of us shoving snow into what we hoped would become Frosty’s belly. Seeing that we were in desperate need of adult ingenuity, El Cubano joined in to help orchestrate the plan. The snowman began to take shape until someone mistakenly jammed snow in the wrong place. “Nooooo,” screamed Hector. “Estas jodiendo la bicicleta!” Of course we all laughed at the catch-phrase, but when you think of all the things that have to work correctly for a bicycle to run efficiently it made perfect sense. Today, I would like to sic that phrase on the masterful Welfariano who has managed to make a career out of evading real work by squeezing the Welfare system like a sponge. Please stop. Estas jodiendo la bicicleta! Let me begin by self disclosing that I am the product of the system.
From going through the public school system to the embarrassment of paying for groceries with the little white food stamps (praying to God no one recognized me in the store), I know all about it. I too waited with mami on the long lines for yellow blocks of cheese and I saw the excitement the first of the month would bring to our home. Having kids of my own, I eventually understood the purpose of public assistance in this country. I felt the karate chops to my finances and that need for a little extra help. That being said, for my parents there was a dignity in being able to find work and get off the system as soon as they were able to. There was a sense of accomplishment when the check from working at the factory replaced the check from the government. I agree that it is incredibly difficult to survive on minimum wage and all the other arguments you might throw at me. However, understand that I’m tired. I’m tired of watching people who I know are on public assistance drive by in better cars because they have disposable income. I’m kind of tired of dragging myself to work as the rooster crows knowing that fulana-de-tal and her man fulanito stay home all day relaxing in fuzzy slippers. More than anything else, I’m tired of knowing my check is a few dollars short because I’m helping to pay for fuzzy slippers I can’t even afford for myself. No, I’m not making a case against the elderly woman who is now disabled
and depends on supplemental income to help her. I’m not referring to the young mother who works part-time and needs additional help to get food on the table. Yes, take my money for that. I’m more than eager to help. Please don’t avoid the topic by twisting my intent. I’m talking to you Fulano. You know who you are. If you have been riding the Welfare bike for more than ten years and have never taken a workshop, a course or a training that might help you get one step closer to an employable skill, I’m talking to you. If you prefer to find loopholes that will help you stay in the system rather than find ways to get back into the workforce, I’m talking to you. If you can bench twice your body weight, but you prefer to keep the unemployment checking going because the job lifting heavy boxes is beneath you, I’m talking to you. If you choose not to marry your honey booboo because you know it might affect the public assistance either of you receives, I’m talking to you. Escucha, it’s supposed to be temporary assistance to help you get back on your feet. You’re not supposed to make a career out of it. It’s not charity. You’re breaking someone else’s back. Welferiano, estas jodiendo la bicileta and the right people are noticing. What will happen when the bike breaks? Se me cuidan y seguimos hablando. MAR-APR 2013 tS MAGAZINE

With so many responsibilities we have as women, we are faced with wearing different hats on a daily basis. How to establish our homes, attend events that our children have, meet our work needs outside the home while trying to find time to serve our own needs. We can continue with the list but I don’t have enough space. My point is, it’s very easy for women to lose the desire in reaching our dreams. For example maybe before you started your family you dreamt of having a business and maybe that dream was gradually defeated perhaps for lack of time or perhaps because the dream you once saw clearly now sees as something impossible to achieve. Well I’m here to tell it’s never too late to achieve your goals. It is not a competition to see who gets there first, it’s a time in your life where one asks “Who I am and how I can get there”? We have many examples like the grandmother who is 71 years, Ernestine Shepard, that has started training for “bodybuilder”competitions and Doña Irma Gonzalez who has been wrestling for 55 years and at 75 years old is training fighters. Most times it’s not that you don’t have the time or that you cannot reach your goal, it’s that we put too many excuses because we have forgotten the passion and enthusiasm of wanting to fulfill our dream. But remember it’s never too late to start and it is important is to know that every day you have an opportunity to get closer to your goal.
MAR-APR 2013 tS MAGAZINE
