SITE ANALYSIS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the physical characteristics with the site, I designed my building to fit the environment of the site. One of the reasons I chose this site is because of the change in levels. The limit to this site is the width of the building, it cannot exceed 8m as it cannot take up the path near the canal.

RESPONSE TO SITE INTERACTION

There was a bus stop in front of the building so I decided to make that bus stop a part of the building

In order to fit the facade to have the rooms coming out, I elevated the building by 2 meters allowing space for pedestrians to walk along the building. There is a 5m difference in the canal level and the street level. This still allows me to have 3m for the lower ground level.

RESPONSE TO SITE CHANGE IN LEVEL To use the most of the levels on this site, I decided to use the combination of steps and ramps to incorporate the building with the site. Originally there were 2 clear levels connected by a set of stairs, I have changed the steps to only go down 3m, then it meets the lower ground floor of my building. connected to that is a ramp which goes all the way down and this allows wheelchair users to get to the building’s lower level and share the experience of sitting on the steps.

INSPIRATION THE HIGH LINE: STEPS

These are steps with a ramp integrated within, this gave me the idea of incorporating the site with the building using ramps and steps

MOVEMENT

DAYLIGHT

CANALIZATION

This is my initial model, everything was to evolve around this light void, channeling light down the building as it is dark in the lower level

Reading rooms are placed north facing as it is the The writer’s bedrooms and the glass winbest light to read in, you get the same amount of dow are placed on the south west side light throughout the day and will not cast shadows where there is most light throughout the year

DAYLIGHT

PROCESSION Procession is using light to guide you through the building, there is a sense of excitement moving constantly I created a route and used procession to lead you through, building up suspense as you THERME VALS- PETER ZUMTHOR follow

VEILS OF GLASS Refracting light in a diaphanous film, using the properties of a specific type of glass, creates this glowing opaque effect

THE SPACES GATHERING SPACE

The main centre of the building is framed by light channeling down from the top straight down to the lower ground where there is a stage. A glass lift goes straight down it so people can explore the building

Foam seats to place on the stage when not in use

THE SPACES

DIFFERENT READING SPACES

I’ve designed a range of different reading spaces as they are the most important spaces. My design generator is orchestrating experience, and here I have done that by creating reading spaces to suit everyone. There are 3 types of seating for personal reading spaces and 2 for groups. There are also beanbags for younger readers with a nice view and an outdoor terrace where people can enjoy the weather in the summer

POSITION OF READING SPACES

FACADE INSPIRATION

UNITE D’HABITATION- LE CORBUSIER

This is in a much bigger scale. On this facade, all the boxes are very regular, they are of the same shape and sizes. The colours are what makes it stand out

BALLYROAN LIBRARY- BOX ARCHITECTURE

These boxes are reading spaces, they are all around the same size but the interesting thing about these are that the inner of these pods are all timber including the seats, I like the idea of continual material use This is an auditorium in spain. I found this one stimulating, the main frame of boxes are regular from big to small as it goes down but the windows are all in different places, it is not regular but neat. On the inside, there are ramps running along the windows. Creating a lovely experience using light

FACADE DESIGN

The section shows how I have made all the reading rooms in different levels in order to have a neat arrangement for the facade I have made changes since this model, I took the balcony out and the window is made to complete the facade

FACADE DESIGN I wanted the building to engage with the pedestrians. The building is all about books, therefore I am using books as an attraction. This is achieved by using frosted glass as I dont want them to see into the building so they would want to explore. Behind the glass is an stylish bookshelve. The glass creates this interesting effect

This is used at the front entrance and on the south facade to attract people from the street or walking up the steps
