Part 1 Architectural Assistant Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to express my interest in applying for a position as a Part 1 architectural assistant within the practice in London. I have just graduated from The University of Nottingham with a BArch Hons, Bachelor of Architecture degree. I am looking forward to taking on a position in a creative and stimulating environment for my year out placement. Farrells is a practice with a great reputation for delivering high quality innovative projects and I believe it would be a place in which I could both develop my architectural skills whilst contributing to the continued success and growth of the firm. During my time at university, I have explored many different areas of architecture. My final year studio projects were focused on museum making. I am particularly interested in site specific projects and culturally sensitive architecture. My thesis project was a unique design on exhibiting the global housing crisis, a complex topic to express that engages with social, economical and political factors. I also have an interest in urban and landscaping, it is important to working with the spaces in between as it creates the connection with the surrounding buildings. I am eager to discover and explore many other areas in my architectural education. Therefore, I believe that the diverse portfolio of the practice would allow me to develop the existing while discovering new and exciting interests within the field of architecture. By seeking ways of representation through using different programs and mediums, I especially value producing hand drawings and making quality models. Although I have real appreciation for crafts, I am highly experienced in using computer programs and am willing to learn new software. Being open to new ideas leads me to constantly discover new materials and methods of construction. I am passionate about design and I would be delighted to work with a range of different people. My work shows dedication and precision, I believe I have the potential and motivation to contribute to the enthusiasm of your team. I would be keen to discuss the position with you at your convenience. Thank you for taking time in considering, I look forward to hearing from you. Yours Sincerely,

Tiffany Chan

YEAR 3 | FINAL PROJECT | A LIVING EXHIBITION I was interested in the different perceptions on the idea of a home. 22% of the people in the world are living in inadequate shelter, I have chosen 6 global cities from the book ‘Endless Cities’ and Hong Kong to exhibit ‘The Housing Crisis’ The idea is to make people aware of these situations. The main exhibitions are the 7 different rooms which are replicas of the living conditions from each city that actors will live in and visitors can walking around the living diorama To get a full experience, a capsule hotel is incorporated in the building, it questions how much space we actually need to live.

HONG KONG

SHANGHAI

Shortage of land and large population, high housing prices leads to immigrants and the less fortunate living in small cubicle housing and cage housing, this is a room with 10 beds

Lack of housing provide in the city, workers and families are left to living in shipping containers on the outskirts.

JOHANNESBURG

LONDON

BERLIN

Struggles of quality housing, big difference between the rich and the poor, lack of money for development. This exhibits a regional at home in a slum in Samampelo

Lots of development in high end accommodation. Overcrowding becomes an issue, people are living underground with no natural light and bad ventilation.

Low density housing with low occupancy cannot handle the rise in population. The cost of a spacious room means they cannot afford proper furniture.

MEXICO CITY

NEW YORK

One of the most polluted cities in the world. Poor governing background, struggles with quality of life and security in communities. People build wherever they could find a space, poor infrastructure but urbanized settled slums have basic amentities.

As the world’s top global city, there is a problem with unaffordable housing. Poor organisation and arrangements of public housing, some families are living in small one-bedroom apartments while there are four bedrooms left vacant

YEAR 3 | FINAL PROJECT | A LIVING EXHIBITION Bamboo is the main structural material and the exhibition pods are made out of GRP, slotted into the grid. The grid like structure is a metaphor for the cage living situation in Hong Kong. Bamboo was a cultural reference of making it global as bamboo scaffolding is used in some areas of Asia and Africa but not popular in Europe. I did research into the strength and joinery of bamboo and it is a very strong and durable material if treated right. I enjoyed working with such an interesting material and got to be very creative with the structure.

YEAR 3 | FINAL PROJECT | A LIVING EXHIBITION The Barbican is a prime location for this project as it is such a significant figure of housing in London. The entrance to the exhibition is by the tower, the Barbican becomes a part of the exhibition and you can see the comparisons against the luxury apartments.

YEAR 3 | FINAL PROJECT | A LIVING EXHIBITION

Section showing how the circulation works around the building, how it relates and connects to the barbican. The structure is designed in such a way that it does not obstruct the view of the residents but giving them pressure and the sense of invasion of privacy which is one of the ideas the exhibition is showing. The building makes you feel lost with security, it is a tall building, it is spacious yet enclosed when you are inside.

YEAR 3 | PROJECT 2 | PRODUCTIVE EXHIBITION

A project celebrating Chamberlain, Powell and Bon, situated at the Barbican, showcasing their work. The design is inspired by the spaces in between Golden Lane, using the patterns to create pavilions that are enjoyable to walk around. The visuals are done by Sketchup, Vray, Photoshop and original photographs as the site is significant to the project

YEAR 2 | FINAL PROJECT | CULINARY SCHOOL Smithfield is well known for its meat market, therefore food is of great importance in the area. Our brief is to design a culinary school with a restaurant and a deli shop, also integrating a Crossrail station exit. My design is based on the theme of ‘transition’, by creating routes, the transition between the rooms by movement of people. Physical model is showing tectonic details, SketchUp and photoshop was used for the visuals, Revit and Photoshop for the perspective section

YEAR 1 | FINAL PROJECT | WRITERS RETREAT Library Cafe opposite Nottingham train station, an enjoyable environment to read and write, the top floor is a writers retreat for 3 people to stay in.

OTHER DESIGN WORK Left: Details for a car park cover design from my work experience at Kewisk, working with an engineering intern. Below: A-level Product Design work- Lighting design inspired by nature.
