On behalf of ACIMAC, the Association of the Italian Manufacturers of Machinery and Equipment for Ceramics, I would like to express my warmest greetings to the Chinese institutions and to the operators of the Chinese ceramic industry. Ceramics China represents a major chance for both Chinese and Italian companies to communicate and to strengthen their long-lasting cooperation. The world ceramic market requires every day better quality tiles, for the production of which the best available technologies are needed. world news SITI-B&T Group posts record results in 2016 SITI-B&T Group, a manufacturer of complete plants for the world ceramic industry, closed 2016 with record results as confirmed by the Draft Financial Statement and the Consolidated Financial Statement to 31/12/2016 approved by the group’s board of directors. Value of production amounted to 209 million euros (up 14.3% on 2015), consolidated EBITDA rose to 18.9 million euros (up 9.3% on 2015) and consolidated EBIT reached 14.4 million euros (+9.7%). But the most significant growth was that of consolidated net profits which soared by 33.2% to 9.7 million euros. The increase in revenues is largely due to higher sales of complete lines for ceramic production. The Formigine-based Group is increasingly establishing itself as a full provider capable of offering cutting-edge technologies for every stage of the production process, a role that has enabled it to secure major contracts from the top world players in the ceramic industry. Export share stood at more than 80% of turnover, boosted by a constantly expanding international network coupled with large-scale investments in the new Customer Service division aimed at opening new branches and support services, as well as a new original parts warehouse. The Group has also performed strongly in the domestic market with 14% growth in turnover in Italy. This reflects increasing trust in the Group’s technologies and ever closer cooperation with major client companies in the Sassuolo ceramic cluster. “2016 was a pivotal year in our Group’s history, not just because of the solid growth we achieved in all the key economic and financial indicators but also because we successfully completed the stock market listing process,” said Fabio Tarozzi, Chair-

man and Managing Director of SITI-B&T Group. “This will enable us to support our growth strategy and continue to invest in innovation and new product development.” SITI B&T Group continues to allocate 4% of its turnover to R&D. In 2016 it presented numerous product innovations focused on Smart Manufacturing, Industry 4.0 and Green technology (including SUPERA® for the production of large-format panels, Titanium® XXL kilns and the “jumbo” Multisky Dryer horizontal dryer). Projecta Engineering and Ancora also reported growth. The latter has successfully completed its first year as part of the Group by expanding its range with the PoliDry dry honing machine, the waterjet cutting machine and the Dry Squaring Speed high-speed dry squaring machine. The B&T White division also posted strong results in 2016, securing major orders in the sanitaryware sector and developing new high-pressure casting and robotised glazing technologies.

world news Surfaces Technological Abrasives acquires ADI The acquisition of ADI Group by Surfaces Technological Abrasives S.p.A., a leading company in the ceramic tile honing and finishing tools market, was finalised on 22 December. The large global group created through the operation will become the major European player in the metal and resin bonded diamond tool sector with a complete range of products for wet and dry machining of ceramic tiles of all sizes and a 2017 turnover of more than 60 million euros. Founded in late 2010, Surfaces Technological Abrasives rapidly established itself in the sector through its ongoing R&D efforts in the field of new industrial processes and its range of high-productivity, cutting-edge products. At its headquarters in Cenate Sotto (Bergamo) it also produces grinding wheels, rollers and protective brushes for cutting and polishing, while the laboratory at its Sassuolo branch is responsible for developing new products for honing ceramic tiles in close collaboration with the leading machinery and glaze producers and end users. It has two foreign branches, one in Brazil and the other in Portugal. ADI, established in 1980 in Thiene (Vicenza), is a leading manufacturer of metal bonded diamond and CBN tools for the ceramic, stone,

world news Four additional supplies of Migratech Technology in China Thanks to the excellent results obtained in 2015 with Dongpeng, the Italian company LB, in cooperation with its Chinese partner Boffin, has recently received new orders to supply the Migratech technology to some major Chinese ceramic tile manufacturers. Four complete microgranulation lines will be commissioned in the second half of 2017. These new lines come after the same Migratech technology was supplied in 2016 to Linghsi (Shijiazhuang City), for the production of 20 million sqm/ year of wall tiles in double firing. The Chinese companies were convinced by the fact that the Migratech technology grants a very high quality of the finished product and a drastic reduction of the
energy costs, in addition to the possibility to produce according to criteria inspired to the sustainable development. A further advantage offered by Migratech is to be able to manage the entering raw materials with high humidity, avoiding the pre-drying in quarry, in addition to the possibility to reach extreme finesses in the grinding phase, large sizes (slabs) and surface aesthetical qualities that cannot be reached with the traditional dry grinding technologies.

New Pearl opts for Lamgea by System to produce its new slabs
New Pearl has selected the Lamgea 30000 ton press technology from System with the aim of becoming the main reference in China in the segment of large format ceramic slabs. The Lamgea moldless press will be installed in 2017 at one of New Pearl’s facilities in Foshan and will produce ceramic slabs up to 1.6 x 3.2 metres with variable thicknesses (from 6 to 20 mm), according to market demands. The technology developed by System to compact atomised powders guarantees flawless air removal from the material. The pressing system features high levels of flexibility and options for customisa-

tion; the press applies a force of up to 30,000 tons and the work cycle ensures precision throughout the entire process. New Pearl’s recent investment opens a new and interesting chapter in the technological partnership between System and the Chinese largest tile manufacturer: up to now, in fact, New Pearl had only adopted System digital decoration technology, with almost 40 Creadigit printers in function in its various factories located in the Guangdong and Jiangxi regions.

world news LB cooperates with UCA for the diffusion of the Italian technology in China
Further to the meeting in March at the Foshan headquarters of UCA (United Ceramics Associ-
ation), at the presence of LB’s chairman Emilio Benedetti and the Chinese partner Boffin, the Italian company LB is now officially involved in the new initiative of the Chinese association. Its aim is to spread the most advanced technologies for the ce-
ramic industry in the Chinese territory. As required by UCA, LB will organize an international workshop to be held during Ceramics China 2017 (June 1st to 4th), focused on the advantages and added value coming from the plant management using the ceramic process automation and the automatic data collection.

After Sun Lot and Nabel, a third Chinese producer – Guangdong Gold Medal Ceramics Co. of Foshan – will begin producing large ceramic panels using System technology. A company specialising in the production of high-quality tiles, Gold Medal is planning to install the new plant during 2017. The line will be equipped with a LAMGEA mouldless press with a pressing force of up to 30,000 tons. It will be able to produce panels with a maximum size of 1.6 x 3.2 metres and a 1.2 x 2.4 metre variant with thicknesses from 3 to 20 mm to achieve the widest possible product range. The characteristics of the automated system were established during the co-design phase, a development process that aimed to strengthen Gold Medal’s market strategies by exploiting the flexibility of System technologies. Plant operation will be managed using COPILOT touch screens developed by the System Electronics industrial division. Positioned on the machine and with an intuitive interface, the touch screens serve to control day-to-day operation of the line and to provide advance warning of any necessary maintenance work.System technology has also been chosen for digital decoration of the porcelain pan-

Rocell (Royal Ceramics Lanka), the largest ceramic tile manufacturer in Sri Lanka, has embarked on a project to modernise the pressing department at the Royal Porcelain (RPL) factory in Horana, which will begin the production of large-format glazed porcelain tiles. Together with new press-

els, which will be done using the high-definition (400 DPI) Creadigit BS printing system. The plant engineering project was developed thanks to the expertise of the System Lamina and System Ceramics industrial divisions with the contribution of area managers, project managers and site managers. The Foshan branch of System China (headquarters in Suzhou) will be responsible for maintaining direct, continuous links with Gold Medal personnel. Along with the plant design stage, System China will also provide support during installation, start-up and training of factory personnel to make them fully autonomous in managing the technological systems.

Consisting of 260 pages of graphs, tables and commentary, it provides detailed analysis of the ten-year trends up to 2015 in industry, markets, per capita consumption and export flows in large geographic regions and in the 76 largest tile producer, consumer, exporter and importer countries. Here we present a brief overview of the key figures. ***

1. Ceramic tile world production and consumption volumes remained substantially stable in 2015 with respect to 2014 (-0.1% and +0.8%, respectively). Import-export flows rose by just 1.5%, continuing the slowdown observed in 2014 (+1%) against the previous year. 2. World tile production fell by 0.1% with respect to 2014 to 12,355 million sq.m. Output remained stable or saw slight growth in all areas of the world with the exception of Asia, where production dropped for the first time from 8,703 to 8,627 million sq.m (down 0.9% on 2014, although still accounting for 69.8% of global production. This downturn was driven by significant falls in Iran, Indonesia and China, which failed to be compensated by growth in Viet-

The European Union (EU-28) registered 2.2% growth to 1,218 million sq.m, while the non-EU Europe area remained stable at 572 million sq.m (+0.4%). In the American continent, total production reached 1,520 million sq.m (12.3% of world production). Volumes in Central and South America remained stable at 1,193 million sq.m (-0.1%), while North America saw a strong performance to reach 327 million sq.m (+6.2%), driven by the recovery in Mexico and the growth of the US industry. Africa’s output rose from 401 to 413 million sq.m (+3%). 3. World tile consumption rose to 12,175 million sq.m in 2015 (+0.8%). Demand in Asia reached 8,166 million sq.m (+0.6%), equivalent to 67.1% of global consumption, with Vietnam and Saudi Arabia the only countries really driving the growth. Demand in the European Union saw a recovery, returning to 910 million sq.m (+5%), including strong growth in Poland, the UK, Spain, Romania and Benelux, and a small initial recovery in Italy. By contrast, demand in non-EU European markets fell from 543 to 532 million sq.m (-2%) due to the downturn in Russia and Ukraine which was not adequately offset by the recovery in Turkey. Consumption in Central and South America remained stationary at 1,279 million sq.m (-0.5%), with the growth in Argentina, Chile and Colombia effectively cancelled out by the sharp decline in Brazil and Venezuela. The strongly positive trend in demand in North America was confirmed, rising from 462 to 505 million sq.m (+9.3%), driven by virtually identical increases in Mexico and the United States in terms of both percentages and absolute values. After years of sustained growth, demand in Africa dropped from 751 to 731 million sq.m (-2.7%) due to falls in Nigeria and Libya. 4. In 2015 world exports increased from 2,695 to 2,735 million sq.m (+1.5%), in line with the slower growth trend first observed in 2014 following much more sustained growth of the previous 4 years. The biggest increase was in the European Union, which exported 856 million sq.m (+4.5% on the 819 million sq.m of 2014., an upturn that was entirely attributable to the sharp growth in Spanish exports. The EU’s share of total exports rose to 31.3%. Asia showed a slight recovery, with exports reaching 1,514 million sq.m (+1.3%, 19 million sq.m more than in 2014, corresponding to 55.4%

The trends observed in 2014 were maintained in all other areas: Central and South American countries reported a small rise in exports from 120 to 126 million sq.m (+5%), as opposed to falls in non-EU Europe (from 150 to 139 million sq.m, -7.3%) and Africa (from 45 to 35 million sq.m, -22.2%), while North America remained stable at 65 million sq.m. 5. As for the export propensity of the various geographical regions, the European Union strengthened its position with growth in export share from 68.7% to 70.3% of production; non-EU Europe saw a fall from 26.3% to 24.3%, North America from 21.4% to 19.9%, and Africa from 11.2% to 8.5%; Asia grew from 17.2% to 17.5% and South America from 10.1% to 10.6%. The trend in import/export flows over the years is perfectly consistent with our long-held view that tiles tend to be produced close to the place of consumption. Although world exports stand at 22.1% of production and 22.5% of global consumption, more than half of this volume consists of exports shipped within the same geographical region as that of production (for example, 87% of South America’s exports remain in South America, 79% of North America’s exports remain within the NAFTA region, and 64% of Asian exports are shipped to other Asian countries). The EU is a partial exception in that 50% of its exports are sold in nonEU countries. This analysis is confirmed by the fact that the shares of world production and consumption tend to be similar in each continent. In other words, Asia accounted for 69.8% of production and 67.1% of world consumption in 2015, while the corresponding figures for Europe (EU + non-EU) were 14.5% and 11.5%, for the Americas 12.3% and 14.6% and for Africa 3.3% and 6%. 6. China, the world’s largest producer, consumer and exporter of ceramic tiles, experienced the first slowdown in its history in 2014. Although the Chinese industry and market remain difficult to quantify due to the very large discrepancies between the available figures, our estimates suggest that Chinese production totalled about 5,970 million sq.m in 2015 (down 0.5% on 2014, equivalent to 48.3% of world

production. This compares with a production capacity calculated by official Chinese sources at more than 10 billion sq.m, spread over some 1400 companies and 3500 production lines. Domestic consumption is estimated at 4,885 million sq.m, 40.1% of world consumption. After growing at a significantly slower pace since 2012, China’s exports experienced the first real downturn in 2014 (-3.3%) and fell again in 2015 from 1,110 to 1,089 million sq.m (-1.9%), equivalent to 39.8% of world exports. Saudi Arabia became the largest market for Chinese tiles (64 million sq.m, +0.9%), followed by South Korea (54 million sq.m, -20.3%) and the Philippines (53 million sq.m, +12%), Nigeria, USA and Thailand. Asia accounted for 55.5% of China’s exports, Africa 21.6%, North America 8.5% and South America 8.4%; exports to the EU region fell to 20 million sq.m (-15.7%), while sales in non-EU Europe plummeted to 11 million sq.m (-49.5%). Brazil, the world’s second largest producer and consumer country, saw a downturn for the first time after more than 20 years of steady growth. Production fell to 899 million sq.m (-0.4%) in response to a contraction in domestic demand from 853 to 816 million sq.m (-4.3%). Exports recovered for the third year running, rising to 76.8 million sq.m (+11%), almost entirely shipped to Latin American markets and the United States. As for 2016, Anfacer is forecasting 7% growth in exports along with a continued downturn in domestic consumption. India was once again the world’s third largest tile producer and consumer country in 2014. National production rose from 825 to 850 million sq.m (+3%, less than the average 10% growth of previous years); domestic consumption also increased by just 7 million sq.m to 763 million sq.m (+0.9% compared to the +5% of previous years). Exports saw further sharp growth from 92 to 122 million sq.m (+32.6%), corresponding to fourfold growth in just 3 years, positioning India 4th in the rankings of top world exporters. With a further 11.5% growth in exports to 378 million sq.m in 2015, Spain consolidated its position as the world’s second largest exporter. It also continued its recovery in terms

Domestic sales likewise saw the first recovery after 7 years of contraction, according to Ascer figures returning to above 110 million sq.m. Saudi Arabia confirmed its position as the leading export market by volume (34.1 million sq.m, +19.7%), followed by France (33 million sq.m, +17.8%), Algeria (25.9 million sq.m, +8.9%), UK (19 million sq.m, +24.3%) and Israel (18.4 million sq.m, +26.1%). The top foreign markets in terms of value were France (223.8 million euros), Saudi Arabia and the UK. In 2015 the breakdown of Spanish export destinations by volume was Europe 37% (45% in value), Asia 30% (25% in value), Africa 23% (16% in value) and the Americas 10% (13% in value). The value of exports rose to 2,452 million euros (+5.3%), with average price dropping to 6.5 euro/ sq.m. The Spanish industry’s total turnover reached 3,095 million euros (+6.6%). 10. In 2015 Italy saw a further recovery in production (+3.4%), up from 381.7 to 394.8 million sq.m, while total sales reached 397 million sq.m (+0.6%). Domestic sales remained stable at 2014 levels in terms of both volumes (80.3 million sq.m) and value (799 million euros, -0.6%). Adding in imports (17 million sq.m), domestic consumption reached 98 million sq.m. The world’s third largest exporter, Italy again increased its exports both in volume (from 313.7 to 316.6 million sq.m, +0.9%) and even more significantly in value (from 4,109 to 4,318 million euros, +5.1%), thanks to a rise in average price to 13.7 €/sq.m (from 12.6 €/sq.m in 2013 and 13.1 €/sq.m in 2014. The sector’s total turnover reached 5.12 billion euros (+4.1%). Exports to Western Europe, the biggest market for Italian tile accounting for 50% of total Italian exports, rose to 159 million sq.m (+1.9%). With 6.7% growth in sales to 51.4 million sq.m, Germany remained the biggest foreign market for Italian tiles, followed by France at 43.2 million sq.m (-7.2%). Strong growth was also registered in the UK (+12.7%), the Netherlands (+15.7%), Romania, Sweden and Spain. Sales also rose in the NAFTA region (up 5.9% to 45 million sq.m,

Italian exports also performed strongly in the Far East (19 million sq.m, +14.3%), the Balkans (16 million sq.m, +5%) and the Gulf states (12 million sq.m, +5%). This contrasted with falling sales in Central and Eastern Europe (31 million sq.m, -17.3%), North Africa and the Middle East (11 million sq.m, -8.6%) and Latin America (5 million sq.m, -4.8%). 11. The three biggest exporter countries, China, Spain and Italy, accounted for 65.2% of world exports last year. Of all exporter countries, Italy and Spain maintained the highest share of exports as a percentage of production (80% and 86%, respectively), compared to the UAE’s 71%, China’s 18.2% and the other countries’ shares of between 9% and 37%. But the real sign of Italy’s leadership position was its average selling price of 13.7 €/sq.m compared to the 6.5 €/sq.m of Spain and between 3.4 €/sq.m and 5.9 €/sq.m of all the other countries. 12. Amongst the largest producer and consumer countries, Vietnam, Indonesia and Iran saw strongly contrasting results. In Vietnam domestic demand rose by 90 million sq.m to 400 million sq.m (+29% on 2014 following +23.5% with respect to 2013) and production saw similar growth from 360 to 440 million sq.m (+22.2%, following +20% in 2014). With this new expansion, Vietnam becomes the fourth largest producer country (level with Spain) and the world’s fourth largest consumer. Indonesia experienced the opposite trend with a sharp fall in consumption from 407 to 357 million sq.m (-12.3%), which in turn prompted an equally strong fall in production from 420 to 370 million sq.m (-11.9%), returning the country to 2012-2013 levels. The same scenario occurred in Iran, where the sharp contraction in 2014 (between 18% and 20%) was further accentuated in 2015 due to continued stagnation in the residential building sector. The estimated domestic demand of no more than 190 million sq.m (-32.1%) prompted the industry to reduce its output volumes to 300 million sq.m (-26.8%) compared to an installed capacity of 680 million sq.m. The only positive note was the recovery in exports to 112 mil-

In 2015 Turkey saw a strong recovery in domestic consumption, which rose from 215 to 234 million sq.m (+8.8%) and was entirely covered by national production (imports stood at just 3.8 million sq.m), up to 320 million sq.m (+1.6%). This contrasted with exports, which fell for the third year running from 84.7 to 77.2 million sq.m (-8.9%), generating a turnover of 451 million euros. The top export markets for Turkish tiles in terms of volume were Israel with 9.5 million sq.m (-13.6%), Germany (9 million sq.m, +15.4%), the UK (8 million sq.m, -3.6%) and the USA (7.8 million sq.m, +23.8%). The biggest market in terms of value was Germany (54.7 million euros, +10%), followed by the United States, Israel and the UK. 14. In 2015 the top 10 importer countries imported a total of 989 million sq.m of tiles, equivalent to 36.2% of total world import/export flows. With the sole exception of Thailand which imported 29% of its consumption, all the other top-10 countries saw imports account for more than 60% of domestic demand, with peaks of 99% in Iraq and between 83% and 87% in Germany, France and Nigeria. 15. The USA remained the world’s biggest importer country with imports up from 159.1 to 174.8 million sq.m (+9.9%), reflecting the 9.9% growth in local demand from 231.5 to 254.5 million sq.m. Imports covered 69% of consumption, while production totalled 76 million sq.m, a figure that is set to increase in 2016-2017 following the new investments under way in Tennessee. TCNA figures reveal growth in imported volumes from the top 5 supplier countries: China (50.8 million sq.m, +8.5%), Mexico (47.3 million sq.m, +0.7%), Italy, Spain and Turkey. Italy (which also controls a portion of national production) retained its position as market leader in terms of value with CIF sales of $695 million (+9.7% following the +8.7% in 2014 and the +18% in 2013), equivalent to 35% of the total value of imports ($2 billion). The 2016 forecasts are very positive: according to TCNA, domestic production grew by 8.4%, imports by 9.8% and consumption by 9.3% in the first quarter of 2016 over the same period in 2015. 16. Saudi Arabia, the world’s second largest importer country, responded to the continuous growth in domestic demand (263 million sq.m in 2015, +7.8%) with an increase in imports to 174 million sq.m (+16.8%). The biggest supplier countries were China (64 million sq.m, +0.9%), India (37.6 million sq.m, +66.7%), Spain (34 million sq.m, +19.7%) and the UAE (23.2 million sq.m, +9.6%). The country’s biggest producer company is Saudi Ceramics which produced 53 million sq.m in 2015 out of an estimated total national production of 93 million sq.m. 5

To supplement the world tile production and consumption figures, we are providing key data for the sector’s leading groups and companies, ranked by output volumes and updated to 31/12/2015. Where available we also give the figures for export share, number and location of tile production plants, as well as turnover generated purely from the sale of ceramic tiles. This allows a fairer comparison to be made between large groups which often operate in multiple segments of the ceramic industry (sanitaryware, tableware, heavy clay) and supply chain (raw materials, adhesives, distribution), as well as other sectors (bathroom and kitchen furnishings, non-ceramic surface coverings, building materials, chemicals, etc.). To provide a more complete picture of group size, we also include total or consolidated turnover and the segments that generated it. The figures were provided directly by the companies themselves or obtained from public sources, and in some cases are based on estimates. However, the rankings are not exhaustive: the lack of a sufficient quantity of data means that a number of groups have been omitted, such as the largest Italian player, Concorde Group. With a turnover estimated well above 700 million euros, Concorde is already firmly on the podium in terms of tile segment revenues but would certainly also make the rankings in terms of production volume.

The American giant Mohawk Industries, Inc. remains firmly at the top of the rankings with an estimated 2015 output of between 225 and 245 million sq.m, after the KAI acquisition. The US multinational is well ahead of all its competitors, especially in terms of revenues. As of 31/12/2015, it reported sales of 3.013 billion dollars in the tile segment alone, equivalent to 37% of the group’s total revenues. The Thai group SCG is second in terms of output volumes (206 million sq.m), but behind in sales revenues (755 million euros), followed by the Mexican group Lamosa with an estimated output of around 110 million sq.m. There are a dozen or so companies with outputs of between 50 and 100 million square metres, including three Brazilian groups which however trail significantly in terms of revenues. Following major expansion programmes, Pamesa and Kajaria have climbed the rankings and are now in the top 10. The Brazilian group Portobello has also entered the rankings with an output of 42 million sq.m,, also thanks to the start up of the new Pointer facility. Apart from the above-mentioned Concorde Group, no other Italian group has an output above 35 million sq.m, although another 5 are included amongst the world’s largest groups with turnovers of more than 200 million euros: Fiandre-Iris (480 million euros), Florim (374 million euros), Panaria (343 million euros), Casalgrande Padana (274 million euros) and Coop. Imola (241 million euros).

The present and future of digital: is the race towards full digital technology heating up?

The 8th Annual Meeting on Digital Ceramic Tile Decoration Technologies, organised by Acimac in collaboration with the magazine Ceramic World Review, was held at Tecnargilla on 27 September 2016 to take stock of technology in the field of digital applications. I use the term digital “applications” because, for the first time, more than one speaker chose to introduce the subject of full digital technology, which includes not only decoration but also digital glazing. The meeting is always eagerly anticipated by ceramic industry professionals and once again proved a big success. More than 450 professionals from around the world packed out the Sala Neri in the Rimini exhibition centre, demonstrating that the topic continues to be of enormous interest. The strong attendance also reflected the standing and prestige of the nine speakers, who represented almost the entire application machinery sector and to a large extent also that of inks and services. As in previous years, I personally had the honour of moderating the meeting. Here I would like to make a few comments about the event and give my overall impressions regarding the applicability of digital technologies.

Several of the speakers at the conference noted the enormous global diffusion of digital technology and argued that the process is irreversible. The close connection between aesthetic results and the plant and machinery adopted creates a virtuous circle in which innovation and technology generate quality, efficiency and competitiveness, although the timeframes available for exploiting the innovations are ever shorter. But to maintain this chain of effects requires increasingly complex innovations and ever more extreme levels of performance. For example, one speaker talked about full-digital machines capable of depositing suspensions of pigments or effects with particle sizes of up to 45 microns and application weights of up to a kilogramme per square metre. Another discussed systems capable of working with tile feed rates of 50 m/min. and application weights above 20 g/sq.m to achieve definitions above 360 dpi. Now that technology for producing and handling large-format panels has become firmly established (another example of a technological revolution that began some time ago but has only now reached maturity), systems for decorating these panels are being studied. As a result, all the major machinery manufacturers are pre-

senting technological solutions for printer setup, introducing innovative visual inspection systems for quality control, and the study of the digital workflow.

This brings us to the most eagerly anticipated issue of all, that of digital glazing, and the possibility of achieving this technological revolution within a reasonable timeframe so as to fully integrate the decoration line for pressed tiles or compacted panels. My overall impression is that everyone is working hard in this field and that the first results are beginning to be seen. Although the situation regarding the machines is perhaps more complicated than that of inks, research and development of special printheads capable of discharging larger quantities of fluids, possibly containing particles of significant dimensions (larger than a micron), is without question well under way. What makes the situation particularly complex is the need to disperse and keep in suspension not just fine particles of pigments but also complex mixtures of frits, clays, pigments and additives (up to 12 components or more!). This makes it essential to perform a highly detailed study of the systems with degrees of reliability that are a far cry from those of solvent-based inks. Obviously, the situation is further complicated by the need to use suspensions with 30-40% of water to lower the total organic load. The topic of water-based suspensions was in fact notably absent at the conference, at least compared to the expectations of attendees. There was only very limited technical discussion of this category of products, perhaps due to the difficulties that more or less all producers are continuing to experience.

To conclude, I believe that 2016 will be looked back on as the year in which digital decoration technology finally came of age. It will also be seen as a year of reflection in which the industry thought hard about the way forward. Clearly there’s no going back, but the ultimate goal of the Factory 4.0 in which all the machines dialogue with each other to achieve maximum rationalisation of the production process is still a long way off, particularly in terms of technology. However, there can be no doubt about the capability and motivation of the industry’s entrepreneurs and engineers… and this gives us every reason to be optimistic!

The increasingly widespread use of digital decoration has led to drastic changes in a number of product prototyping processes. In particular, analog systems have been replaced by digital processes that provide a virtual and physical simulation of the finished product and reduce development times. The production layout has also changed considerably, transforming the glazing and decoration line into an often integrated set of digital devices capable of depositing powders, grits, glazes and colours according to the instructions provided by the graphics file. In this field, Sacmi has followed two different research strands, one being a digital line with traditional pressing, the other a line with Continua+ technology. In both cases, it provides an advanced automated system that allows for digital production of ceramic products and guarantees a high level of efficiency, control and repeatability of models. Starting out from pre-press digital powder decoration, the piezoelectric deposition technique is used for both traditional lines and the new Continua+ lines. In the first case, the DGD (DiGiDrawer) system is used with 3 colour bars to deposit coloured powders according to a predetermined digital design during the final loading stage. In the second case, the Digital Dry Decoration, DDD device is used to apply up to 4 materials in the dry stage directly onto the soft ceramic body. Raw materials, glazes and the decoration are applied according to the predefined graphic sequence and are coordinated with both the three-dimensional structure created during shaping and the subsequent wet digital graphic applications. Proceeding to the glazing line, dry digital decoration is performed using the DDG (Digital Dry Glazing) system, which features two colour bar modules positioned before or after wet decoration. The DDG system is able to perform standard deposition or considerably increase definition through the application of digital glues. This has the advantage of reducing the quantity of material that needs to be removed, thereby improving efficiency and savings. In the field of wet digital decoration, the latest generation of DHD printers is equipped with an extremely advanced electronic control system that ensures total operational flexibility and is able to manage ever larger graphics files. Real-time data transmission allows for the processing of large quantities of information (projects with numerous images which vary according to the tile size) within

timeframes consistent with the highest production speeds. However, speed is limited by the need to coordinate the images with a variable body texture. The colour bar can be removed completely to ensure simplicity of maintenance. The hydraulic and electronic components are located on the bars, while the ink refill is housed in the lower section. The operator interface is simple and intuitive and allows for automatic collection of production data and statistics on process costs and efficiency. The device is equipped with generous self-diagnostics to indicate the printer status and the need to replace components such as filters, degasser and pumps. The degassing system is managed automatically by the central control system and guarantees optimal pressure reduction at all times, performing automatic self-adjustment and indicating the need to replace the filter when the pre-set limits have been reached. Raster image processing (RIP) is performed extremely rapidly by an industrial PC installed on the machine, even during the production cycle. A reduced version of the Crono colour management software is able to implement a number of choices in terms of printing method and graphics/ image management. Various shear, randomisation and toning methods are available for specific printing and tone variation choices. The high waveform quality has allowed for the development of a new printing screen which ensures extremely high definition and efficient rendering of both softer and more intense tones. This is a result of the sharp and consistent drop shape, superior drop arrangement and selection strategy (grey levels) and the absence of satellite droplets. For more consistent print quality, a process to pre-linearise each machine has been introduced. This ensures more reliable adjustments and the possibility of simulating printing by other machines. Last but not least, Crono Process Management is responsible for controlling the entire sequence of devices, as well as managing colour, materials and production.

At Tecnargilla 2016, System unveiled a powerful vision and self-regulating image system for digital printing called Creavision. Creavision monitor tiles as they enter the printer and adapts the graphic design to the real position of the tiles to ensure perfect printing to within a tenth of a millimetre. Building on the Group’s many years of experience in vision technology, System’s Ceramics division has developed a unique self-regulation process based on a sophisticated system of video cameras which observe, analyse and control the tile’s position to ensure perfect printing every time. Definition, precision and savings are three crucial aspects of digital decoration. Creavision is able to meet all three criteria thanks to the expertise acquired by System over the years in the field of vision systems for fired and unfired ceramic bodies. The unique feature of Creavision is its ability to identify the tile’s spatial position on the printing system’s infeed belt. Especially in the case of strips and long formats, current decoration methods can be used to print a larger area of the printable surface so as to avoid edge defects, although there remains a risk of imprecise centring of the graphic design with respect to the edges of the tile. Thanks to Creavision and its powerful video cameras which view, analyse and control the position of the tile, the collected data (x,y,α) are transferred to the Creadigit digital printer which performs perfectly centred printing on all

tiles. This ensures that the desired definition is achieved as the tile is perfectly centred and the quality of the graphic design remains unchanged. The vision process also guarantees the maximum precision due to the possibility of synchronisation between the various groups without the need to have all applications installed on a single unit (glazes/effects-colours-effects/material). In this case there is no need to determine the optimal distance between the machines or the distance between the various series of application units according to the product being printed, thereby ensuring outstanding versatility. Another key aspect concerns ink savings, given that Creavision eliminates excess ink application and edge overflow and significantly reduces rejects at the sorting stage. “All-round digital” was the title of the presentation given by Projecta Engineering at the 8th Acimac Meeting on Digital Technologies. The aspect that emerged most strongly from the report was the company’s pioneering vision and ability to anticipate industry trends. With G5 Projecta also displayed a strongly forward-looking vision, proposing an Industry 4.0 system back in 2015 before the concept had become widely adopted. At the end of the belt, the optional automatic sorting element with intelligent vision system is capable of recognising production defects even prior to firing. Thanks to its advanced technology, the automatic sorting system not only makes a report but establishes a real dialogue with the machine, allowing it to detect any malfunction independently and take the necessary action. First it can perform automatic cleaning, followed by a test print. If at this point the issue no longer occurs, the machine resumes operation completely independently, otherwise various alarm systems are activated and the operator is notified. Another new product recently unveiled by Projecta is Evo Dry Fix, which has already proved a big success in all the world’s leading ceramic markets. It is the first digital printer that combines drop-on-demand inkjet technology with dry application technology capable of applying grits of various particle sizes with guaranteed maximum stability and repeatability. In recent months, Projecta Engineering’s research efforts have focused on developing systems for digitally decorating ceramic products with complex and especially angular shapes. In the current stage of development of ceramic process technology, large sizes, full digital, digital effects and new digital materials are seen as the keywords that will define the future of the sector. Technological progress has influenced not just the ceramic production line but also digital application systems. Printheads have evolved rapidly, bringing to market systems that deliver higher discharge quantities. More importantly, however, printheads offering excellent levels of performance in terms of definition and discharge even at high line speeds have gradually become established. Both the ETR series and the SPS (Special Particle Size) series include numerous digital effects such as white, glossy, matt, sinking, water-reactive and metallic inks, as well as the so-called multifunction ink. The effect inks present in the SPS series have a specially designed particle shape and grain size distribution that enables large quantities of material (up to 50-100 grams/m2) to be deposited using dedicated medium and high discharge printheads. Colorobbia also offers the HQ (High Quantity) series of water-based digital glazes for the high-discharge digital glazing process. Durst Full Digital Glaze Line is the end result of five years of research and development efforts aimed at creating a complete glazing line capable of integrating a fully digital process based on an open system. The solution incorporates latest-generation Durst glazing, printing and finishing technologies and can work with glazes that are very similar to conventional products. The resultant line guarantees maximum versatility, flexibility and quality, as well as extremely competitive management costs, space rationalisation, optimisation of production and a high degree of management control through process automation. By perfectly synchronising the entire process as part of a 4.0 solution, Full Digital Glaze Line adopts the Durst Gamma DG 4.0 digital glazing systems and the new 8-colour inkjet printers from the Durst Gamma XD 4.0 range within a single workflow. Controlling the entire cycle from file processing through to the finishing stage is essential in order to optimise the advantages of digital glazing and to ensure perfect registration between the variable textures and the printed graphic designs. Based on single-pass inkjet technology, the Durst Gamma DG 4.0 glazing system incorporates proprietary printheads patented by Durst for handling high-viscosity water-based glazes. It is designed to deliver large particles with a grain size of around 45 µm without any reduction in productivity. This characteristic allows a large variety of glazes to be used, including those with similar formulations to conventional glazes and low-cost products. The reliability of the system guarantees high-quality glaze application on tiles even at very high temperatures (up to 70°C and higher) without clogging the nozzles. This ensures that output remains stable over the entire production cycle.The key strength of the Durst glazing system is its modularity, allowing the machine to be configured with a single or double glaze bar and with different printing widths. Each colour bar is designed to deliver up to 1 kg/m2 of glaze. In his book “Crossing the Chasm” (1991), the author and consultant Geoffrey Moore introduced the concept of The Technology Adoption Lifecycle to describe how new technologies are adopted into a market – initially by innovators who are keen to experiment, closely followed by early adopters looking for a competitive advantage, then the late majority who wait for the technology to become well established before buying, and finally laggards who resist change. We can model digital ceramic decoration onto Moore’s lifecycle – from the first experimental digital ceramic printers in the late 1990’s, then the breakthrough into the mainstream in 2007 with the first recirculating printhead – the Xaar 1001. Digital inkjet technology has enabled tile manufactures to replicate natural materials and produce highly creative and textured tiles as well as larger and thinner tiles. By 2012 the technology had become widely accepted and now, by the end of 2016, almost full digital adoption has been achieved and even laggards have converted. Having completed the technology adoption lifecycle, Moore describes the next phase as the Mature Market Phase, characterised by tough competition where only the fittest survive. Innovation is not an optional nice-to-have, he says – it’s a requirement for differentiation and growth. Luckily innovation can take many forms – product innovation, marketing innovation, process innovation, and more – so it’s certainly not doom and gloom in the ceramics printing industry and we can look forward to many innovations in the industry in the years to come! Esmalglass-Itaca Group Although ceramic technology has been a well-established industry for years, it is now undergoing radical changes in terms of digital effects and materials. Given that ceramic products are created by combining textures, contrasts, sheen, reliefs, etc. through the addition of material, it is clear that synchronised application of digital materials provides added value. Esmalglass-Itaca aims to extend these benefits with its Digital Effects and Digital Materials families of products, which add material textures, contrasts, sheen and relief to further enhance ceramic products. The Digital Effects series is designed to work with current printheads and combines excellent physical stability with optimal performance. It consists of materials that complement digital decoration to create special effects. These include ceriumand zirconium-based whites, gloss and matt effects, lustres, metallic effects, sinking glazes and glue. Within this family, the digital glue is of special note due to its rapidity of action and ability to achieve a wide range of effects. It is sufficient to load the digital glue into the printer and subsequently use any type of dry application device. This allows all kinds of grits and granules to be applied and synchronised with the design, pro-

It is possible to apply effects ranging from matt to gloss, opaque to transparent, lustres, metallic, coloured etc. and to create micro-reliefs and non-slip textures. The Digital Materials series is designed for use with new high-discharge printheads capable of working with application weights well above 100 g/ m2 and even 1 kg/m2. These products are water-based and have a particle size of more than 3 µm. This larger particle size is directly linked to the ceramic effect that can be obtained. Digital techniques can be used to apply the same quantities that are currently applied using bells, flat screen-printing machines, rollers and other applicators. They are also significantly cheaper, a critical factor in highweight industrial applications. These two factors have further contributed to the goal of creating a totally digital ceramic production process. The Digital Materials family comprises a wide range of products, including a matt white, a clear matt, a satin clear matt, a crystalline, a metallic and a lustre. These materials can be used to create any kind of surface covering comparable to those obtained with current methods but with all the benefits of digital technology. Both families of materials are developed for application
on any type of product, including porous single firing, porcelain, stoneware, double firing, etc. All components are formulated to achieve optimal technical and aesthetic characteristics in line with today’s requirements while at the same time guaranteeing the maximum colour intensity of Esmalglass-Itaca pigmented inkjet inks. Another innovation presented by Esmalglass-Itaca as part of its Digital Solutions family is a new set of cost-effective inks. This set of inks has more intense colours, resulting in greater luminosity, lower ink consumption and cost savings. Poppi Clementino Poppi Clementino Spa is a company specialized in the optimization of the energetic consumption. By performing an accurate analysis of the energy used in the production cycle, the company is able to offer to its customers a set of customized solutions for energy recovery and filtration systems. In the field of energy recovery, the company has developed in the years a number of technologies able to reduce the energetic waste: it normally recovers the calorific potential embedded in the heat and fumes, by recycling it on the production cycle. Poppi Clementino Spa has already successfully installed its systems in a large number of industries, including ceramics, bricks, foundries, plastics to name just a few. In the production of ceramic tiles, the machines that require the largest consumption of energy, are, in the order, spray driers, driers and kilns. Poppi Clementino Spa has developed a combined system focused in the recovery of the energy coming from the kilns: the most can be recovered from the heat embedded in the air normally exhausted through the cooling chimneys; in addition, also the fumes contains large amount of heat, that can be ideally recovered. The recovery of the cooling air is usually called “direct” recovery system. The recovery of the fumes, normally require the installation of a Heat

Exchanger, and it is called “indirect” recovery system. In the most of the cases, the two systems are combined in order to achieve the maximum efficiency. Direct recovery systems: It is a combined system, on which the hot air exhausted from the cooling chimney of the kiln is conveyed by a fan to feed the burners of the spray driers, at an average temperature of 170 °C. In this application, where an inverter is used to control the speed of the fan, it can be usually recovered an amount of energy, that allows a saving of 2025% of the yearly consumption of the spray drier. Indirect recovery system: the heat included in the fumes coming from the exhaustion of the chimneys of the kilns, have to be treated appropriately because of the large amount of corrosive pollutants. For this operation, a fumes/ air heat exchanger is installed to obtain clean hot air, to be conveyed to the energy-consuming machines through insulated pipes. The temperature drop can be estimated to be around 1°C for every 10-15 meters of appropriately insulated pipe. In the driers, it can be normally reached a 25÷30% reduction in the consumption of fuel (natural gas, diesel, LPG etc.). Heat exchangers. From the beginning, Poppi Clementino Spa has been active in the engineering and manufacturing of heat exchangers. Such machines are used as heat sinks prior to the filtration
stage. The heat exchangers are also often used in the cogeneration process, on which there is the combined production of electrical and thermal energies. The working principles of the heat exchanger is based on the transfer of heat from the hot smokes to another fluid that is normally air or hot water. The product range of Poppi Clementino Spa also included diatermic oil exchangers. Depending on the working temperature, smoke corrosiveness, and solid particulates included on the fumes, the company has developed a complete range of machines. Control and supervision instruments. Latest technologies LB To monitor the data flow managed in the LB plants and interpret them in real time, LB has developed an innovative software compliant with the production systems Industry 4.0. It dialogues directly with machines and plants exchanging key information on the same equipment that allow to control them and intervene in advance, with direct access. This new software consists of a “monitoring and control cockpit” to control and interpret the data from remote giving indications concerning: • Production efficiency • “Health status” of the plant • Consumption control. The criteria of Industry 4.0 – real time collection, integration and sharing of the “big data” between the machines – are satisfied thanks to the implementation of the following advanced functionalities of the LB plants. Production reporting system: The managing software allows recording and visualizing (through reports) the consumption of the materials used in production. The generation of the reports can be made using different visualization filters configurable by the user; it is possible to verify the consumption according to the time, to the product recipe lot or through codification of each single material. Within each lot or each period,
the consumption of the used materials is shown. The reports can be referred to in the control software interface or can be saved in electronic format or shared directly in the cockpit or on multimedia platforms. System of analysis and warning of maintenance interventions on machines: The managing software elaborates various information from site. It warns the user about which machines are in need of maintenance or check. These information are exchanged in real time with the control cock-pit, allowing LB to know in real time the “health status” of the plant in order to be able to schedule and plan the preventive maintenance interventions. The maintenance interventions performed on the plant are saved by means of a reporting system within the software in order to create a history of the lifetime of the plant and its machines. System of analysis and warning of the plant efficiency status: The managing software elaborates the operation data of the plant in real time, comparing them with the optimal working configuration. The output of these elaborations generates some warning to the user and corrective actions to be performed to maintain the efficiency of the plant within the ranges set by the project.
Interface software 4.0: The software platform includes an interface through which it is possible to exchange or store information and process data with any external information system of third parties. It is possible to consult from remote both the process information and the statistics data, to remote the control interface, and to collect data from more than one plants unifying them in just one analysis and control supervisor. Furthermore, it is possible to make any warning through e-mail or telephone messages. These ones are only few examples of some functionalities that can be tailor sized according to the client’s needs. With the installation of the interface software 4.0, all the relevant functions can be integrated also at a later stage compared to the initial project of the plant, in order to satisfy the various technical and managing needs that can arise within the plant lifetime.

Setec “The Big One” is the name of the new automatic line for casting onepiece WCs proposed by Setec Group and presented at Tecnargilla 2016. This new system guarantees high productivity together with a high level of automation in the casting of one-piece WCs, thereby reducing production costs and improving quality. The modular line can comprise up to 10 modules, each equipped with 2 plaster moulds for casting the one-piece bowl and 2 plaster moulds for the respective rims. Various models and designs of one-piece WCs can be installed

and cast on the same line. The configuration of the largest plant consists of 20 installed moulds capable of casting up to 6 times a day using the capillary mould system. The maximum daily productivity is therefore 120 one-piece WCs or 240 close-coupled WCs. The machine performs all the operations automatically. All parts of the mould are automatically repositioned by the machine ready for the next casting operation. Synchronisation is achieved by means of a control panel equipped with PLC and touchscreen allowing for supervision of the entire production cycle. This
integrated system minimises the operator’s presence during the cycle. All of this ensures lower labour costs and at the same time a big increase in quality and productivity.

Capaccioli The Italian company Capaccioli is among the world leaders in the design and construction of complete plants for brick and tile industry. The company presents now its new ultra-rapid CondorTM dryer, which is revolutionizing the manufacturing process. The new dryer is a further step towards innovation, thanks to the drastic reduction of time and drying costs while improving quality, a trait that distinguishes Capaccioli over 60 years. CondorTM is a continuous dryer with an interrupted drying process. This fact, together with the uniformity of the temperature and humidity of the air, which influence the pieces to be dried, ensures that the drying process happens quickly and without breakage. The air inside the dryer envelops the pieces in an uniform way, being able to wedge in even the smallest holes, to ensure the uniformity and steadiness of the process during the drying cycle. In this way, the pieces to be dried throughout the overall drying process have perfectly uniform conditions of temperature and humidity. CondorTM dryer can be used to dry clays with a shrinkage during drying process up to 6%. It is particularly suitable to dry most of the Chinese clays such as coal gangue and other Chinese typical clays; it is also ideal for the production of thermo-blocks with thin septum. CondorTM dryer is a valid alternative to dryers with movable or fixed metal decks with large cars: these are very expensive, bulky, inflexible systems, difficult to manage and with very high energy consumption, at least three times the CondorTM dryer. The energy consumption of these dryers with large cars is 25/30 kwh/ton with at least 28/35 hours drying cycles, depending on the clay and the brick formats to be produced. CondorTM dryer specific consumption, instead, is 8-10 kwh/ton only

and the drying cycle can vary from 45 mins to 3 hours. The CondorTM rapid drying process can also be used in typical and traditional Chinese furnaces, where coal is mixed with clay in order to obtain firing without the use of external burners on the kiln. The use of CondorTM dryer in these conditions allows to produce, with low investment cost, thermal blocks with thin septum, which generally cannot be loaded wet over the kiln cars. CondorTM dryer has one or more tunnels where the cars pass by carrying the pieces to be dried. The extruded pieces are cutted, grouped all spaced out and transferred by a robot over the CondorTM cars. To perform this operation, the robot uses special high sensitive grippers (our Patent) in order to avoid any deformation to the extruded pieces, that according to the production needs may contain 2025% of water. At the entrance of the dryer the wet pieces get in, while, in the same area, the humid air comes out, expelled by high efficiency centrifugal fans. Here, there is a chamber with double automatic door, which avoids any kind of air infiltration during the entrance phase. At the opposite side, the dried pieces come out while the process hot air gets in. Hot air is introduced into the dryer by high efficiency centrifugal fans and it is taken from a mixing chamber, where the kiln’s cooling hot air and the generator’s air mix up. The air coming out from the generator provides the needed quantity of heat required during the drying process. The hot air that integrates the air coming from the kiln (kiln heat recovery) can be produced by: 1. Coal burners 2. BTZ heavy fuel oil burners 3. Gas direct burners. The complete drying process is controlled and regulated by an
automatic management system that detects multiple parameters and operates on multiple elements in order to automatically act on the following process: 1. Generation of hot air produced by the burner. 2. Mixing of burner hot air with the kiln’s cooling air and with the room air before it gets into the dryer. 3. Adjustment of the inlet fans air speed and pressure inside the dryer. 4. Adjustment of the outlet fans humid air speed and pressure and of the discharge exhausted air. 5. Activation of dynamic actuators and directional flaps to implement and optimize the dryer process. This advanced technology is the result of Capaccioli’s long experience in rapid drying systems with continuous process. Ultra-Rapid Condortm Dryer is covered by international patent. Application of research, studies, technical solutions adopted, cars and gallery design (the most compact in the sector of dryers for brick industry) have allowed to achieve extraordinary results: ultra-rapid drying cycle, high quality products, very low specific electricity consumption of the ventilation process (8-9kwh/ton). In 2016, Capaccioli has successfully completed the construction of five CondorTM dryers (each one with a production capacity of 750 ton/day) for the drying of hollow blocks and load bearing blocks. Another one is under construction.
