Ceramic industry conducts its first remote acceptance tests
陶瓷行业首次进行远程验收 Throughout history, major crises have always accelerated the pace of change, and the sudden, unprecedented global emergency of 2020 is no exception. On 19 May at the inauguration of the annual Microsoft Build 2020 developer conference CEO Satya Nadella greeted thousands of participants logged on from all over the world saying that “We’ve seen two years’ worth of digital transformation in two months”. Just as digital technology has been critical during the emergency response and the recovery phase, Nadella believes it will also play a vital role in re-imagining the world in the post-Covid era. In the ceramic industry too, the digital revolution has progressed by leaps and bounds in recent months. Just eight months ago, the experts attending the Acimac conference on the “Digital Future of Ceramics” urged the world of manufacturing to take a decisive step forward towards the digitalisation of factories and to develop digital tools that would facilitate purchasing of products by the market and end consumers. “There’s no way back from digital,” confirmed the few ceramic entrepreneurs who had seen the benefits of the first smart manufacturing experiments first-hand. What six months ago might have appeared little more than wishful thinking, now seems obvious. But above all, while the previously introduction of digitalisation in factories had been seen as bringing advantages almost exclusively in terms of increased corporate and production management efficiency, today the digital revolution has become an urgent necessity in order to keep closer to suppliers and the market. This is well understood by plant manufacturers, who for years have been focusing their research efforts on Industry 4.0 technologies that would allow them to operate remotely and instantly solve problems in their customers’ plants thousands of kilometres away. The new frontier of virtual support was successfully opened up this spring with the first cases of installation, start-up and remote testing of highly automated plants and complete lines. The first positive examples of remote Site Acceptance Tests, in which local technicians were guided through the procedure step-by-step, included the one conducted by Sacmi at the Belite plant in China and the start-up of a BMR finishing line in the United States. The future awaits. 5

Sacmi completes the first 4.0 ‘virtual start-up’ at Belite Ceramics At the end of 2019 Chinese firm Belite already had all the machines on site, ready to be installed and started up by Sacmi technicians. Then came the health emergency, preventing the Italian teams from travelling to China. Hence the challenge of performing a fully remote installation and start-up of an entire plant. In May, the announcement that the first white body wall tiles products of outstanding added value - and glazed porcelain tiles have started coming off the new up-and-running production lines. In practice, the start-up was managed by training local Sacmi Nanhai technicians. For certain machine types, a training course managed by the Italian parent company’s personnel - working via the web with the local tech team and Belite - was organised. The result is an undeniable success, as confirmed to Sacmi Nanhai by the CEO of Belite, Mr. Deng, who expressed his “complete satisfaction with the results achieved”. “Our ambition”, pointed out Mr. Deng, “is to combine the best available technology with the most efficient organisation. That’s the main reason why we chose Sacmi, the world’s number one supplier to the ceramic industry, for our new 4.0 factory”. Sacmi, after standing shoulder to shoulder with customers all over the world ever since the earliest stages of the health emergency, has now proven it’s ready for the post-COVID phase, when virtual assistance will be an increasingly essential element during the design, start-up and after-sale phases. Thanks to this all-new plant, Belite (until now a major supplier of foreign brands) aims to give its own brand a boost by focusing on the medium-to-high-end of the market. From this viewpoint, the company is one of just a handful in China equipped to produce the stylish white body wall tiles that

are the jewel in the crown of Belite’s new product range. The new line stands out as one of China’s most advanced in terms of automation, technology and digitization. More specifically, the order included 2 complete, highly automated wall and floor tile production lines. These start with the body preparation department (consisting of two continuous modular grinding mills that receive raw materials from an automatic feed system) and 2 Sacmi spray dryers. Downstream, there are no less than 5 presses, produced by SACMI directly in China according to local manufacturers’ requirements, plus 2 horizontal dryers and Intesa digital decoration units. For the firing department, Belite chose 2 latest-generation two-channel kilns in the latest ‘design’ configuration, which combines style and performance. Equally important is the end-ofline equipment. This includes 5 sorting lines, complete with vision system, and LGVs to pick the finished pallets, a choice that makes Belite one of China’s pioneers in terms of total factory automation. The entire plant has also been designed to be managed via the new Sacmi HERE software, which features advanced monitoring, maintenance management and order scheduling functions.

world news Tecnargilla postponed to Autumn 2021 Tecnargilla, the world’s most important exhibition of supplies to the surface coverings industry, has been postponed until 2021. The decision was taken by Acimac (Italian Ceramic Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers’ Association) and IEG (Italian Exhibition Group) with the aim of ensuring that the event can be held in the best possible conditions. Tecnargilla is the benchmark exhibition for companies from all over the world and has a more than 50% share of foreign visitors from over 100 countries, particularly from outside Europe. Although the current restrictions are expected to be eased over the coming months, the difficulties facing international travel have prompted the organisers to postpone the event (Tecnargilla was originally to be held from 28 September to 2 October 2020 in the Rimini Exhibition Centre).
Tecnargilla will therefore be held in the autumn of 2021, after which it will resume its biennial frequency without skipping an edition. This will enable the exhibition to maintain its key role as a showcase of innovation and a meeting point for the ceramic and other surface coverings sectors and to reaffirm the unique international status of Italian technologies. “The decision was taken after a great deal of thought and with a strong sense of responsibility,” says Acimac Chairman Paolo Sassi. “Tecnargilla is the only world-leading exhibition in the industrial machinery sector capable of attracting not just the suppliers of technology for the surface coverings industry but above all large numbers of customers from all over the world. In this challenging year, we do not believe that the conditions are in place to guarantee the same level of international visitor attendance in terms of either numbers or quality.”

Eleven of the leading supplier companies to the ceramic industry took stock of one of today’s most topical issues: the digitalisation of ceramic companies, effectively the next step from Industry 4.0 machines to Industry 4.0 factories. The event focused not only on the most advanced data collection and plant interconnection technologies required for digital manufacturing but also on new solutions for creating value in the warehouse, the final link in the chain between the factory and the market. Talks were given by Cristian Mattioli (System), Paola Gatti (Sacmi), Marco Sichi (BMR), Stefano Guidarini (Proteo Engineering), Giuseppe Cavani and Stefano Puccini (LB), Fabrizio Arnaldi (Plannet), Giuseppe Miselli (Sacmi), Stefano Cudicio (Toyota Material Handling Italia), Paolo Cometto and Franco Angelotti (Movetro-Intermac), and Paolo Serpagli, Miki Ferrari and Alessandro Fiori (Weflex). The audience appreciated the high quality of the talks, particularly the three panel debates which provided an opportunity for direct discussions with representatives of tile producer companies: Maurizio Mambelli (Florim), Giulia Catti and Matteo Bondavalli (Mariner), Roberto Fornaciari (Labocer), Luca Costi (Del Conca), Gianpaolo Capitanio (Casalgrande Padana), Gilberto Pedna (ABK), Alessandro Barbieri (Italgraniti) and Eugenio Belli (Kerbell). The results of the discussion were very encouraging. The tile manufacturers agreed unanimously that it is essential for the industry to continue the process of digitalisation that is now under way and that the transformation into full-scale smart factories needs to be completed within the shortest possible timeframe and with the necessary investments.

The need for customised production, smaller batch sizes and even the ability to process a single product are the latest challenges facing the manufacturing industry. Complete digitalisation of processes, the use of shared resources and efficient data management are key elements for sustainable development of a new industrial model centred on flexibility and sustainability. Based in Roteglia (Reggio Emilia) in the Italian ceramic district, Ceramiche Mariner has promoted this new industrial model by creating the first fully digitalised ceramic tile production facility. This digital manufacturing concept was put into practice using the Prime software platform developed by System Ceramics. Prime manages the entire production flow from raw materials processing through to the creation of the finished product by means of advanced IT systems capable of monitoring the entire process using a single latest-generation graphic interface and 3D technologies. This is the age of decentralised intelligence in which new ceramic production standards are being defined. To develop Prime, System Ceramics adopted edge computing, an approach in which IT resources are positioned close to the data source to form a collaborative ecosystem where machines learn how to interpret and anticipate the relationships between processes from humans. This allows for solutions that would previously have been unimaginable.

The process of digitalising an industrial plant offers plenty of potential but at the same time can be challenging and highly complex. What can be done to limit the risks and what are the key factors for success? First of all, it is important to remember that data are only valuable to the extent that they can be translated into useful information for users. Collecting a large quantity of data without a precise objective and/or without adopting the appropriate mechanisms for selection and interpretation overburdens the systems without bringing any real added value. A second key aspect is to remember that technology alone is not sufficient. Processes, people and technology must all cooperate synergistically for a digitalisation process to achieve its real potential. This means it is important not to neglect training, engagement and the promotion of a change-oriented culture. It is equally important to realise that large-scale digitalisation projects require re-engineering of production processes, otherwise there is a very real risk of automating wastage. For these reasons, a digital manufacturing project is often successful when following a stepwise approach. This means

The HERE platform, SACMI’s solution for digital manufacturing projects, fully meets these needs. This modular software platform becomes the link between production plant and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), between the world of operations and that of information technology. For example, it is typically used in production management. Starting out from the production orders sent by the ERP system, the system tracks each production batch during the various processing stages, automates a large number of operational and logistics procedures and provides the ERP system with information on warehoused products. It is also capable of automatically analysing data, calculating performance indicators and managing maintenance activities. This is all done using web technologies and usability criteria to ensure ease of use of the software, even on mobile devices. • automation of production and logistic procedures, reducing operators’ workloads and the risk of error; • integration of production-related information flows, both within the production department and between the data management software present in the plant (ERP, WMS – Warehouse Management System, customised systems), thereby reducing the time and resources necessary for the transfer of information. Overall, these elements bring economic benefits and a real competitive advantage for the company. There are many possible practical applications. For example, in one case it was necessary to solve connectivity issues on a number of outdated sorting lines. An ad hoc solution developed by Sacmi according to the real needs of the customer was used to create a semiautomatic procedure for transferring information on product pallets to the ERP, just as for the other lines of the system. This solution was achieved in collaboration with the customer for a very low cost, especially compared with the potential cost of upgrading or replacing the lines in question. In another case, the customer wanted to optimise logistics flows. The chosen solution was to introduce automatic management of operational scheduling and the phases of supplying materials to the processing lines, including picking and packaging. Finally, it should be remembered that this platform is evolving constantly, largely with the aim of integrating and interfacing with other typical Smart Factory technologies such as innovative plant solutions (e.g. tracking, full digital), machine learning and analytics algorithms, digital twin and computer vision techniq ues. ✕

The BMR digital line is a new concept in the ceramic end-ofline stage. Dynamic, digital, sustainable and efficient are the keywords of a technology that has established itself in the sector over the years and is now an integral part of the production plant. The increase in demand for product customisation, the growing complexity and ever shorter life cycle of products, and the need for small batches coupled with the uncertainty of an unstable economy are all factors that have driven development strategies towards maximising line flexibility while maintaining and if possible improving production efficiency and quality. Whereas until recently the finishing, cutting and squaring processes were outsourced, they are now carried out internally by the ceramic companies themselves. In the space of just a few years, these operations have seen advances that have completely transformed the end-of-line stage. Some technologies, such as squaring and cutting, have completed the transition from wet to dry processing in just 4 years. This exclusive BMR technology has transformed the process, optimising all aspects including plant engineering, production, working environment, costs and finished product quality. The cutting and squaring processes have also undergone upgrades dictated by the Industry 4.0 revolution. Digitalisation and automation are the keywords of the new Smart Factory and BMR has integrated cutting and squaring with a patented video camera system. The operator interface allows access to all sensitive process information with just a few clicks. best conditions, bringing significant savings in terms of the grinding wheels. • The size change operation is performed very rapidly and troubleshooting is instantaneous, guaranteeing an increase in productivity. • Quality is also improved: automation and control using video cameras ensures less chipping and breakage, less downtime, greater production continuity and less wastage of material during size changeover. • The machine is managed remotely: thanks to network connectivity, all operator interventions are performed outside the cabin (except for grinding wheel changing), including the creation and automatic loading of the removal cone (recipes). • The video camera system also allows the processing operations to be monitored constantly, resulting in the need for fewer interventions on the part of the operator who can therefore focus more on problem solving. • Finally, all information on grinding wheel wear, lifetime and efficiency is continuously recorded and saved. This ensures a high degree of control over production data, which can be used to produce customised reports. The belt speed, the forward-backward oscillation travel and speed, the grinding wheel grit size, the head pressure and the height of the abrasive can all be memorised. The machine is loaded automatically: after the machine has been turned on, the heads automatically descend when the first slab passes through. Then when the head is turned on, reduced pressure is applied for a pre-set time to allow the new abrasive to be run in after the tool change. Finally, greater flexibility is also achieved by the forward-backward oscillation, divided into 3 zones, each of which can be adjusted in terms of size, speed/acceleration and pressure. dry polishing machine that uses natural silica and a thermomechanical process to increase the gloss level of the tile coming from the lapping process by 30 degrees or more. Equipped with 10 satellite heads and six tools, SuperShine applies the product and then carries out polishing with the first 7 heads, which also dose the product. Next come two free positions to allow the product to penetrate the tile, followed by the final 3 heads devoted to washing. The end result is a product with great aesthetic appeal that maintains the functional characteristics of porcelain stoneware. The future of digital decoration can be summed up in a simple question: What’s next? It is a question that combines the concept of a timeline with a keyword of the Basic programming language. “What’s next?” is the question we ask at a moment in time when the process of digital innovation in the field of decoration appears to have reached completion. Most production lines now use digital decoration machines, there is widespread knowledge of digital technology and printers, and analysts consider the digital printer market to be mature, placing the technology in the “late majority” phase of the Rogers innovation adoption curve. System Ceramics’ answer to this question is to complete the process of full digitalisation of the line, in other words to go beyond DOD digital printing to generate added value and bring enormous benefits. Because it’s one thing to focus on the adoption of a technology, quite another to consider the concept in its entirety. In other words, we must not confuse inkjet printing with the broader concept of digitalisation. In terms of infrastructure, System Ceramics has concentrated on the development of a new digital printer called Creadigit Infinity which represents the future of digital decoration for the ceramic sector. Infinity has unprecedented computing power provided by the new CoreXpress platform, the processing unit (one for each colour bar) that oversees all operations necessary to reproduce the image on the ceramic surface. It is a latest-generation processor with rapid and immediately available memory that brings a further significant increase in performance. Digital technology needs data, which often depend on the tile passing through the printer or along the line in general. The information is collected by various pieces of equipment, which use a dedicated network of sensors to supply the data rapidly to the part of the machine that performs the processing. The R&D department has further improved the machine’s performance to guarantee a high-speed real-time data flow to the printheads, even in the event of significant manipulation of the image during printing (such as management of tone uniformity, printhead joins, colourways, rotation, deformation or addition of specific variable components for each tile). It is a well-known fact that high computational power is key to enabling digital technology to operate effectively and exhaustively. The future of ceramic decoration is collaborative digitalisation. Today every printing machine must complete a digital process in which each ink contributes to the end result, and with this in

Production trends in the ceramic sector are evolving constantly and growing ever more complex. Whereas in the past the ceramic tile industry was characterised by large production batches and mass deliveries, the situation today is very different with manufacturers making increasingly specific and ad hoc requests. Both now and in the immediate future, production processes must be able to meet requests for small batches (1500 m2) of extremely high quality products (95%) within very short timeframes. This means changing product type several times per day on a given production line, which creates greater difficulties in terms of set-up and error minimisation. The fact that ceramic is now used in the furnishing segment for products such as bathroom and kitchen countertops has further increased the required quality criteria and reduced the margin for error. In this scenario, glaze and colour producers play an increasingly strategic role for ceramic companies and a strong partnership between the two parties is the only valid solution. With this in mind, Sicer is not just a supplier but acts as a fullscale partner for its customers. Only by establishing close collaboration and teamwork is it possible to provide dedicated customised solutions that guarantee research, innovation and consistent quality. One example of the excellent results achieved through this process of continuous technological improvement is the development of new ceramic bodies and substrates. Interconnecting the various stages in the production process is one of the cornerstones of Sacmi’s vision of plant construction for the modern ceramic factory. For this purpose, the HERE software provides complete technical and technological management of the process from a single control and digitalisation platform. One of the key steps in this highly integrated and monitored process is ceramic surface finishing, which uses innovative digital technologies to create graphic designs and to apply materials. Sacmi Deep Digital Line is the solution for fully digital management of all decoration phases. With this solution, the decoration process is no longer limited to printing with inks, but includes glazes, effects and powders. The available materials are applied using digital devices synchronised by the same HERE process supervision tool. Whether using traditional configurations (PH presses) or the Continua+ line for large slabs, the installed sensors are able to uniquely identify each individual piece in transit and apply the various materials according to the specific product recipe. This process differs from traditional decorating lines in two ways. Firstly, with the Sacmi Deep Digital Line the surface finish is no longer created by a series of stand-alone decoration devices but by a single integrated decoration line. The second aspect is the Sacmi Deep Digital Line’s ability to coordinate with the pre-press loading devices, which means that the surface decoration can be synchronised perfectly with three-dimensional decoration of the substrate.

For example this makes it possible to create very thick ceramic slabs where the graphic texture of the surface coordinates perfectly with the through-body vein. The Sacmi digital devices adopted on the Deep Digital Line consist of DHD series ink and effect printers. The series has been expanded with the new 12-bar versions available for sizes with a width of up to 2,000 mm. One totally new product on the market is the new DDG series of machines for digital application of effects in both a dry and wet process. The system offers the unique feature of selective grit application, which together with wet glue application allows for the design of innovative products based on the combined use of two dry materials. With DDG it is also possible to apply two additional wet materials, which can be useful for surface finishing of the piece or for further decoration with other ceramic effects. All of this is achieved while coordinating perfectly with the other digital devices on the line. Sacmi’s range of offerings also includes the DGD and DDD powder loading devices (DGD for traditional PH presses and DDD integrated on Continua+ upstream of the compactor), which are capable of coordinating the decoration and glazing process with the other phases and thereby extending the concept of surface finishing to all the phases upstream of the press. Growing awareness of the environmental emergency that is facing the planet is prompting the world of research and industry to develop technologies capable of mitigating the impact of production activities. The concept of sustainability means finding ways of exploiting environmental resources without depleting them so that future generations will also be able to meet their needs. So clearly the first measure of a technology’s sustainability is its ability to save resources. However, this analysis must take account of a product’s entire life cycle, which means evaluating not just the impact of a technology in the specific context of the processes for which it is used, but also how it affects the complete product manufacturing and consumption cycle. In ceramic tile production processes, decoration is one of the stages where environmental impact can be improved in order to ensure greater sustainability of the overall process. Moreover, the use of digital decoration and glazing technology with water-based inks reduces direct application costs on materials such as large slabs or surfaces with rustic matt finishes. It also opens up new product development opportunities such as selective glaze application or the through-vein effect. ❱ Environmental and technical advantages of Cretaprint Hybrid printers Decoration with water-based inks on Cretaprint Hybrid printers also brings clear benefits. In terms of environmental impact, it allows for an average 73% reduction in carbon emissions and lower consumption of chemical solvents for cleaning operations. New building and architectural projects are subject to increasingly stringent health and safety regulations, making it necessary to develop ceramic tiles with technical and aesthetic characteristics that cater for a more demanding market. With this in mind, Vidres has developed a complete range of glazes that comply with current regulations, ranging from anti-slip finishes to antibacterial glazes and special products for polished finishes. In particular, Vidres offers a wide range of glazes with nonslip properties that adapt perfectly to any glazing technology. One of these is the Kratos range of glazes with a surface microstructure that ensures exceptional anti-slip qualities coupled with appealing textures. Laboratory and inclined ramp tests with human operators have given very satisfactory results with slip-resistance values of R10-R12 for both dry and wet surfaces. Moreover, the high-quality aesthetic finishes frequently allow the same tile collection to be used both outdoors and indoors, another obvious advantage for the tile manufacturers. Another solution developed in the Vidres laboratories is Tecnoker, a spherical granule that can be added to any glaze to ensure excellent non-slip performance in a standard finish without altering the colour of the ceramic tile. Tile producers can also opt for Duragrip, a series of micro-grits which after gentle surface roughing on a polishing machine (in the case of glossy finishes) or brushing machine (matt finishes) deliver anti-slip properties (R11 and Rd57) and a surface effect that is both pleasantly tactile and surprisingly resistant to scratching and abrasion (Mohs 9 and PEI IV).

In particular, the company is launching two new tools that are ideal for use with extra-large slabs and produce extremely smooth, matt, non-reflective and silky touch surfaces in accordance with the latest trends. Key characteristics include high stock removal capacity in terms of surface coverage, even at high operating speeds, and extremely high elasticity of the abrasive binder. Air conditioning in spagless casting areas

Marcheluzzo Ceramics, a company specialising in the design, production and installation of air-conditioning, pre-drying and drying plants for sanitaryware production, opened an office in Bangkok in 2018 with the aim of offering an even more effective service to the Southeast Asian market. One of the most interesting plant projects carried out by the Italian company was for a major Thai sanitaryware producer who needed to improve the microclimate of a new cast shop to ensure higher product quality and a comfortable working environment for operators. It is a well-known fact that the climatic conditions in a cast shop are strongly dependent on the type of casting process (traditional, HPC or Spagless) and above all the summer/winter climatic conditions in the country. As described in a previous report (see Ceramic World Review no. 133 p. 140), the optimal thermo-hygrometric conditions in a cast shop normally vary over a temperature range of 30-32°C and relative humidity of 60-65%. In the plant built near Bangkok, the climatic conditions are very close to these values, making it difficult to calculate and control the parameters of the air conditioning system. First of all, we will look at the benefits of using a system like the one proposed. Marcheluzzo Ceramics specialises in the thermal treatment of cast ware from the moment it is removed from the mould through to complete drying. It is in the cast shop where the piece is formed that it begins losing water. At the same time, the material undergoes contraction. This contraction is the most critical stage in the drying process and must take place uniformly, safely and with precise control of the thermo-hygrometric parameters of the air. In the traditional casting process, the moulds must be recovered bearing in mind that the quantity of water accumulated during the day’s casting operations evaporates during the night. The higher

temperature generated by the system (up to 40°C) combined with a lower relative humidity (45%) and airflow directed onto the mould (but not onto the cast pieces) allows the mould to return to the initial weight it had in the morning before casting. No less importantly, the system supplied by Marcheluzzo Ceramics also continuously filters particles of ceramic powder from the air, guaranteeing a healthier and cleaner environment. All the air in the cast shop passes through the filtering section of the air handling unit (G4 class filters) up to 12 times per hour.

But it is in the case of spagless casting that air conditioning really comes into its own. When the moulds open, the compressed air causes the accumulated water to evacuate partly in the form of a liquid and mainly as a mist. If this mist is not treated immediately, it propagates into the environment, considerably increasing the relative humidity of the entire cast shop area in an uncontrolled fashion. Moreover, this mist not only consists of water vapour but may also contain microparticles of ceramic slip. This makes it essential to immediately extract the humidity at the moulds using a distributed and well-balanced suction system. This is precisely the kind of system adopted by Marcheluzzo Ceramics, consisting of a double suction duct with axial fan and calibrated vents perfectly positioned along the whole length of the casting benches. This system is capable of entirely removing the mist generated by the moulds and the compressed air. With a total of 8 casting benches, the 4 double extraction ducts are sufficient to manage the entire casting shop.

technology However, a system like this will only work if combined with a centralised air handling unit in the casting area as air cannot be extracted from an environment without reintroducing the same volume of adequately conditioned air. The extraction ducts remove the mist while the air handling unit introduces treated and filtered external air with lower absolute humidity than the air inside. The air handling units combined with an efficient duct and diffuser distribution system guarantee perfect control of the thermodynamic parameters of the process. The system is controlled by the PLC, which is always connected to the touchscreen operator panel, the control computer and the mobile phones of plant supervisors. The extraction speeds and pressure control are determined by two different factors: control of the relative humidity values in the cast shop area and mist formation near the casting benches. During demoulding, the operator manually presses a button located close to the casting bench to activate the localised extraction process and introduce external air via the air handling unit. In the Thai plant we have described, this synchronisation was able to bring the environmental conditions in the casting area from humidity values of over 90% and a temperature of 33°C to a maximum relative humidity of 70% and a temperature of 32°C. These values were maintained in the most severe conditions during the rainy season between June and August. This not only created a better working environment for operators but also ensured controlled and homogeneous shrinkage of all pieces in the cast shop during the initial drying stage, further demonstrating how important it is to air condition production areas even in countries with hot and humid climates. 5 ADVERTISING

Integrated systems for reducing pollutants and energy recovery

Poppi Clementino SpA has been active for 40 years in the fields of energy saving and filtration. Experience gained in the field has led the company to focus recently on dry environmental purification systems, which are generally more versatile and efficient and allow for more effective maintenance. In recent years, a number of industrial sectors, including the ceramic machinery sector, have begun devoting much greater attention to the emissions of certain pollutants following the introduction of more stringent environmental regulations in many countries. This applies in particular to the levels of sulphur and nitrogen oxides SOx and NOx in production fumes generated by the transformation and combustion of raw materials, which are now subject to increasingly stringent checks to ensure compliance with the lower emission limits. In this context, Poppi Clementino SpA has developed integrated systems for reducing these pollutants that combine purification treatments with energy saving devices. The reduction in SOx and NOx emissions is achieved by injecting reagents and catalysts into the fume circuit and adopting specific operational measures: guaranteeing adequate distances between the elements in question and installing a bag filter. Smalticeram The development of increasingly advanced digital printing solutions has allowed decoration processes to be standardised and marks a major step forward for the ceramic industry. Lingl Following the successful installation of a continuous dryer at the Duravit factory in Meissen, Germany, Lingl was again commissioned by Duravit to supply a set of 10 chamber dryers for the new production plant in Chongqing, China. Designed in accordance with the latest Industry 4.0 criteria, the Chinese facility has set a new standard in digitalisation of the sanitaryware production process. The Lingl dryers are designed to automatically dry 750,000 products per year, the intended production capacity of the plant’s first operation phase. To ensure “rhythmic drying” of the wide variety of products (washbasins, urinals and WCs), the dryers are equipped with rotary fans consisting of a drive and a reduction gearbox for fan and cone rotation. This patented design saves on electrical energy and reduces maintenance costs. The main characteristic of Lingl’s drying technology is that the dryers are loaded as soon as the products are stable enough to be transported. This avoids the need for pre-drying time in often uncontrolled and unstable climatic conditions, saving space and time inside the production facility as well as reducing drying rejects. The dryer control system operates each chamber drying process independently, taking into consideration the actual product mix to calculate the chamber
load and water content. The energy demand in each drying phase is calculated and controlled to ensure the optimal drying curve. This proprietary control system, based on the Siemens WinCC programming platform, communicates automatically with the AGV control system, exchanging signals to automatically operate the dryers’ doors and start the drying process. The heat source for the dryers consists of superheated water supplied by a single hot water boiler plant. Ten individual water-air heat exchangers provide the hot air for the chambers. Dryer installation and commissioning was completed perfectly within the timeframes requested by Duravit, giving excellent results for all types of products.

Latest technologies Certech - Vibrotech The Ink Refill Technology system developed by Vibrotech solves problems relating to manual ink refilling in digital printers but also brings clear environmental benefits and improvements to the digital decoration process. Rather than small 5 or 10 litre cans, the inks are supplied in 1,000 litre (or larger) drums and transferred to the dedicated dispensers that form the heart of the Ink Refill Technology system. Supplied in series, they are equipped with an Industry 4.0 control panel complete with level indicators that monitor consumption and automatically place an order with the ink producer when a fresh supply is needed. Inside these special storage tanks (with inclined bases to avoid sedimentation), a pneumatic pump automatically mixes the ink (with user-programmable times) to keep it continuously recirculating, filtered and ready to use. Ink Refill Technology can be supplied in either manual or automatic versions. In the manual version, the operator draws ink from the dispenser manually using a single 5-litre bottle and fills up the digital printer in the traditional manner. In the automatic version, the storage tank is connected directly to the printer for automatic ink filling. The key feature of the automatic Ink Refill Technology system is the ink distribution circuit running from the dispensers to the digital machines. The system is
designed to ensure that the inks flow continuously throughout the entire circuit, including the hoses connecting the storage tanks to the digital machines and the corresponding valve units. In practice, the complete absence of stagnant areas in the ink circuit avoids all risk of sedimentation. This programmed recirculation is performed on average twice a day and has proved extremely useful during production stoppages, especially for extended periods of time. When the quantity of ink in the inkjet tanks falls below a pre-set level, the level indicators send a signal to the system which in turn controls the automatic opening of the distribution valve unit and the consequent supply of a given quantity of pre-filtered ink. As well as reducing the operator’s workload, automatic refilling eliminates potential colour loading errors in the machine while at the same time preventing impurities from entering the printers. The automatic Ink Refill Technology system has a centralised control panel, complete with a touchscreen connected to the factory’s management system, which controls all system operations, provides real-time information on ink levels and consumptions for each individual machine, and automatically makes the call for a new ink order. The data are also available via a dedicated mobile phone app. The plant can be connected to any kind of digital printer and operates with any
liquid digital material (solvent- or water-based inks, effects, glazes and digital glues). It takes just 10 days to install and is fully modular (the modules are connected via an Ethernet/IP protocol), thereby simplifying subsequent expansions in terms of number of colours and/or printers.
