Given that the Covid-19 pandemic has forced Tecnargilla to be postponed as a physical exhibition for a year (the show will be back in Rimini from 27 September to 1 October 2021), the organisers IEG Italian Exhibition Group and ACIMAC have turned their attention to the digital world. But rather than opting for a virtual trade fair with a time-limited duration, they decided to create the first real social network for the sector, which for 330 days a year will become the exclusive meeting point for ceramic industry professionals offering unique opportunities for new business and networking. Tecna Next is the first digital platform devoted to suppliers of technologies, materials and services for the ceramic and surfaces industry and aims to cater for the entire international community of Tecnargilla. Just like a social network, it is a constantly evolving platform featuring new posts, videos, live webinars and chats with existing – and hopefully also future – customers. And indeed large numbers of customers have already signed up. Launched online on 26 October, Tecna Next continues to grow daily, attracting profiled new users including all the largest international ceramic companies. By the end of November, the platform had already clocked up close to 1,000 registered buyers and operators from around fifty countries (primarily Italy, Spain, Turkey, India, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria and the United States), along with 2,800 unique users, more than 40,000 page views and 42% of traffic from Italy and 58% from 72 foreign countries.

Sales of ceramic tile in the United States have been badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the Tile Council of North America (TCNA), consumption dropped 11.6% in the first nine months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019 to reach 189.2 million sqm. Imports accounted for the bulk of these losses while the US tile industry remained stable. US shipments to the end of September totalled 63 million sqm, of which 2.2 million sqm was exported (+4.4%), mainly to Canada and Mexico. Total US consumption amounted to 60.8 million sqm, just 1.5% down on the first nine months of 2019, although aver-age selling price dropped from $16.6 ‫ مل و ن ل دا ل روش و م ر کاش و سرامیک در ایا م ده م رم رب‬1 ‫دو‬ to $16 per sqm. World ceramic sanitaryware import/export flows grew by 75.2% from 2 to 3.5 million tons over the period 2009-2019, corresponding to a compound annual growth rate of 5.8%. In 2019 sanitaryware exports continued to rise with 4.6% growth on 2018, but with a dif-ferent trend in the various geographical areas of production.

Geberit, the Swiss sanitaryware and bathroom fittings giant listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange, closed the third quarter of 2020 with strong growth, recov-ering most of the losses of the previous six months caused by the pandemic restrictions. Net sales in the period July-September 2020 grew by 5.3% (a currency-adjusted increase of 8.5%) to CHF 794 million (more than 736 million euros). All other balance sheet indicators saw double-digit growth. EBITDA climbed to CHF 264 million (+14.1%), EBIT reached CHF 227 million compared to CHF 195 million in the third quarter of 2019 (+16.4%) and net profit totalled CHF 189.4 million (+11%) compared to CHF 170.6 million in the same period in 2019. The Group’s net sales fell by 5% in the first nine months of the year to CHF 2,262 million compared to the previous year’s figure of CHF 2,381 million. However, after currency adjustments totalling CHF 110 million, the loss was just 0.4%. EBITDA fell by 0.9% to CHF 726 million (32% of turnover), while net income dropped by 6% to CHF 504 million.

Life Cycle Design (LCD) is an approach used to design and analyse a product’s life cycle taking account of all its environmental and social impacts. The first Italian sanitaryware manufacturer to adopt this solution was Ceramica Catalano, a company based in Fabrica di Roma (Viterbo) which together with its partner Sacmi has become famous for having brought forward the construction of a lights-out factory by several years, resulting in higher quality, lower operating and environmental costs and a higher degree of workforce specialisation. Seven years ago the company started up the first plant designed entirely in keeping with this new approach in all stages from the supply chain through to design, production and logistics.

Drying is an important step in sanitaryware production due to the critical nature of the process itself and the importance of the physical time required to complete the production cycle. This highly challenging process requires space, manpower for loading, unloading and handling the ware trucks and the use of parking buffers. It is also associated with high energy consumption. Producers are therefore increasingly in search of technologies capable of reducing drying times and power consumption, optimising the usage and recovery of the available thermal energy, and ensuring near-zero drying losses.

Digital ceramic glues for inkjet application are the latest version of a technology that has frequently been used in the past for ce-ramic tile decoration. Essentially, digital ceramic glues or adhesive inks are inkjet inks for drop on demand technology that enable glass grits or powders to adhere to the tile surface according to a digital design. Due to their special polymer content, they have a bonding or gluing capacity when applied to the tile surface. But to ensure excel-lent technical results, these polymers must guarantee perfectly stable bonding of the applied grits through to the firing/melting stage.

‫‪ Iris Ceramica‬و کارخانه سنگ مرمر و گرانیت ‪ ،FMG‬رسما آتیکو را راه‌اندازی کردند‪ .‬فضایی پانورامیک که جهت سرگرمی و برقراری روابط اجتماعی‬ ‫و معاشرت در پشت بام مکان تاریخی دفتر مرکزی آن‌ها واقع در فیورانو مودنسی‪ ،‬در شهر مودنا ایتالیا‪ ،‬طراحی شده است‪ .‬این پروژه اخیر‪ ،‬منجر به‬ ‫بازسازی ‪ Iris Ceramica‬و ‪ FMG‬گردید که در سال‌های اخیر نمایشگاه و سالن پذیرش اصلی آن‌ها به یک موزه تاریخی و در نهایت دفاتر مدیریت‬ ‫تبدیل گشته بود‪.‬‬

Ceramic machinery: recovery expected in 2021

As widely expected, the Italian ceramic machinery industry has concluded 2020 with a further decline in turnover, dropping 15% following an already negative 2019 (-20%). Sales have returned to 1,470 million euros due a contraction in both exports (down 11% to 1,121 million euros) and Italian domestic sales (down 25.4% to 349 million euros). This negative result was of course a consequence of the uncertainties experienced by ceramic manufacturers this year amid the Covid-19 pandemic and the global economic slowdown that began in 2019. This combination of factors means that client companies have been more cautious about making new technological investments, in many cases postponing them until next year. Commenting on the sector’s preliminary figures, Aci-mac chairman Paolo Mongardi pointed out that the ceramic machinery industry has always experienced cyclical phases and that following five years of strong growth (up until 2018), a two-year downturn was only to be expected even without the impact of a pandemic on this scale. So it only appears to be a matter of time before sales pick up again. “Although caution is in order, we believe that after two years of low investments

on the part of customers, the end of the Covid emergency may coincide with the physiological recovery of the ceramic machinery sector,” said Mongardi. “This is certainly our hope for 2021.” This forecast is backed up by several observations, first and foremost the marked improvement in the state of the global ceramic tile industry since the second half of 2020, with demand for tiles remaining buoyant and in many cases leading to significant levels of destocking. Not only have giant producer countries such as China, India and Brazil resumed operations in earnest, but Italy and Spain are also set to conclude 2020 with surprisingly positive results compared to the forecasts made last spring. While tile production in Italy contracted by more than 10% compared to 2019, sales volumes are estimated to have declined by just 4%. Spain concluded the first 10 months of the year with 6.5% lower production than in 2019 but with a strong increase in tile exports (+26% in September), as a result of which the trade association Ascer expects to close 2020 with the same turnover as in 2019 (3.74 billion euros).
